For your reference, the org chart appears again in this issue on page 3. While we still have work to do aligning the bylaws with the new structure and, most importantly, filling committee positions, we have determined that it represents the structure we want. This is a major step forward and I want to thank the Board for its foresight. Why do we need this structure? As I pointed out last month, if the Board is to remain focused on our vision and strategic goals, then the unending, day-to-day stuff that makes Blackbeard Sailing Club function must be done at the committee level. The vision for how this comes together is a big subject and more than I can cover today. In the coming months, I plan to take one group of committees at a time and continued next page Blackbeard Sailing Club, New Bern, NC!1

From the Commodore (continued from page 1) expand on how we see this working. This month, I ll cover what I like to call our infrastructure committees that report to Vice Commodore Mark Hallquist. Our org chart shows four infrastructure committees: Docks, House, Grounds & Shelter and Workday. Collectively, these four committees are responsible for repairing, maintaining and enhancing our grounds, buildings, docks and the electrical, plumbing and other systems that are part of them. Not surprisingly, the upkeep and enhancement of these facilities consumes a tremendous amount of our resources principally time, energy and money and you should expect that to remain a permanent fact of life. However, it s a worthwhile cause. Our great facility is a huge part of BSC. It s the place where we have fun and pursue our sport, each in our own way. How will these four committees work together to maintain and improve our infrastructure? First, let s remember that for smaller, routine stuff, BSC is a do-it-yourself club. When you find a bulb that has burned out in the bathroom, a trash can that is full, a dock board that has come loose anything you can address yourself or with the help of another nearby member then take care of it! That s the expectation and your obligation as a club member. On the other hand, if you come across something that s beyond the scope of an easy fix, then you should let the infrastructure committees know. How? It s easy simply send an providing the details to BlackbeardWork@hotmail.com. The four infrastructure committees will periodically review the issues that collect in that inbox and determine how best to handle them perhaps by organizing a work party focused on a single issue or by scheduling it for spring or fall workday. Whatever method is chosen to address a particular task, everything depends on the members who step up and volunteer their talents and labor. That s a proud part of the BSC heritage that we will continue to nurture. To make finding the right volunteers a little easier, we ve begun to compile a talent pool a list of skills each member can contribute to making BSC a better place. You may recall being asked at fall workday whether you have carpentry, electrical or plumbing skills, or other talents and interests like writing or planning. That information, while still incomplete, will be used to help find volunteers when the committees are planning the work to be done. Let me update you on 2017 staffing for our infrastructure committees. The Dock Committee will be chaired by Bill Drechsler who has served us so ably as Dockmaster for many years. Bill will continue to perform the important task of managing wet slip assignments. However, with the added responsibility of planning maintenance, repair and enhancement of the docks, he needs additional committee members to help. The House Committee has overall responsibility for the clubhouse and bathhouse, both inside and out. It is being chaired by Joe Gormley with assistance from Dave Brown. Joe and Dave can use additional volunteers to assist with routine maintenance and upkeep. Paul Mills has agreed to co-chair the Grounds & Shelter committee, but we need to find a co-chair and additional members to assist. Lastly, we are in search of a chair, assistant and members for the Workday Committee. I use the word plan a lot when describing committees and committee chairs. The main role of the chairs, co-chairs and assistant chairs is primarily one of organization. It s inevitable they will get involved in doing some of the get-your-hands-dirty stuff too, but their main role is making sure that required repair and maintenance gets done usually by leveraging the skills, talents and labor of members like you and me. The Workday Committee is a good example of how this will work. For example, let s say that the Dock, House, Grounds & Shelter and Workday Committees get together and agree on six projects they think are within the abilities of the membership to complete on spring workday. (OMG: spring workday is March 18 th!) They ll scope out each project, determine what skills, labor, tools and Blackbeard Sailing Club, New Bern, NC continued next page!2

From the Commodore (continued from page 2) materials are needed and then line them up. With the right planning, members should arrive at workday knowing what task they ll help with and how. There should be a leader for each task who knows the plan, and has the manpower, materials and tools to get the job done. Once again, we need additional members who will volunteer to serve on these and other committees. Please be one of them. Contact me or one of the Committee Chairs you see named above. You can reach me anytime at wgreen3@suddenlink.net or Barnacle Bit Did you know that nearly 54% of BSC s 2016 annual expenditures have gone to insurance, utilities, trash, cleaning, mowing and accounting? These fees amounted to about $70,000 last year. Blackbeard Sailing Club, New Bern, NC!3

Wicked Weather Wrecks Racing by Mark Brennesholtz Spoke too soon when I bragged about the perfect racing record in the NYRA Winter Series through four race dates. January 7th races were cancelled by wind real feels in the 20s when the racing limit is mid 30s. Add rain, sleet and frigid winds, and nobody whined about being stuck ashore watching football in front of the fire. February and Beyond Race Events The close of winter racing is the traditional NYRA Commodore s Regatta on February 25, followed by the Commodore s Ball social. No other race events are scheduled for February, but the Inter-Club Racing Committee (ICRC) should have the 2017 racing calendar in this issue of the Epitaph. NC-PHRF to Meet February 27 The PHRF racing rating Committee will have its pre-season meeting on February 27 at 1100 in the BSC clubhouse. This meeting is open to all and is open to hear rating appeals or other discussion without prior notification. The Committee can also change any rating, with or without appeal during this meeting. I am Blackbeard s rep on the Committee, so if you have questions, suggestions or concerns, please contact me: Mark Brennesholtz. markbrenn@ec.rr.com or Winter Series Wraps with a Whimper January 21 was the final race date this winter. Although racing began with about 8 knots of wind, it died down until the second race had to be abandoned. In the race that was completed (the lucky 13th of the series), Dave Whitney's Silent Pursuit handily beat John Jackson in Georgie Girl to capture Non-spin/ Cruising series. In Spinnaker, Divine took line honors and corrected first by several minutes. But the next four boats corrected within 19 seconds after over an hour of thrashing about. Mark Hittner and Jerry Rezab doublehanded with the spinnaker on Blue Note and took a deuce by one second over Ed Doughty in Super Bueno, who beat Charlie Nelson in Water Phantom by seven seconds, who beat Drew McCrocklin in Team Elite by eleven seconds! This continued the string of very close decisions all season. It was a wonderful Winter Series. ICRC Updates by Charlie Nelson ICRC Chair The Inter-Club Racing Committee (ICRC) has just announced the 2017 Open Race Schedule for our participating clubs and it is found elsewhere in this Epitaph. Also, the winners of the ICRC Sailor of the Year (SOTY) have been determined. To qualify for this, racers must have participated in at least 4 of the following 8 regattas in 2016: NYRA Invitational, ETYSA, NCOC, Ocracoke Race, Hancock Creek, Dragon's Breath, Oar Race and Michelob Cup. Unfortunately, some of these were not held in 2016 (NCOC), were abandoned (Ocracoke, Oar) or otherwise changed from their original concept (Michelob) so only 5 races could be scored (NYRA, ETYSA, Han- Blackbeard Sailing Club, New Bern, NC!4

ICRC Updates (Continued from page 4) cock, Dragons, Michelob). Accordingly, the ICRC considered reducing the number of qualifying races to 3 (from 4) but since the results did not change, we decided to stay with 4 qualifying races. The winner in Spinnaker Class was Boartaint, skippered by Tom McKnight who has been racing for many years locally. The winner in Non-Spin was Silent Pursuit, skippered by Dave Whitney, another long time local racer. Congratulations to both skippers as ICRC Sailors of the Year in 2016! In other news, the NCOC will not be held in 2017 (although there is some hope that it will return in 2018). As a result, the ICRC agreed to add the Oriental Cup to the 8 races used to determine the SOTY. Also, the 'traditional' dates of several regattas have been changed so make your racing plans accordingly: The Oar and Beer Regattas, traditionally held on Labor Day weekend, have been moved to May in In addition, the Dragon's Breath has been moved from August to June 3-4. The format of these races remain the same but the DATES HAVE CHANGED. I hope to see more BSC members on the water, racing in the Open events scheduled for 2017 locally and 'down-river'! Daysailing & Trailer sailing Committee Needs You! by Bruce Woods As part of the member involvement goals of BSC this year, the new committee structure has a place for daysailing. I don't know about you, but I do a lot of daysailing, which basically for me, is just because that's the kind of free time I have. However, there are plenty of things we could do with daysailing, such as join the Cruisers for the first part of one of their cruises. We could have destination sails too, with a group that could have a raft-up for lunch, etc. A corollary of daysailing is trailer sailing. Lots of people have boats they can tow to another place, like Beaufort, Edenton, Belhaven, the Pamlico River out from Washington, Kerr Lake, Jordan Lake, and so on. Maybe we could make some trailer sailor cruises that would work for interesting weekend destinations. Regardless of your thoughts, how about helping out by joining the committee? The cruisers are meeting on February 11 at 1:00 in the clubhouse. I am on that committee and plan to be there. How about a daysailor/trailer sailor meeting at 2:00? If you are interested in being on this committee, please me at bruce_woods@yahoo.com. Also please show up and be a part of it on February 11! Thanks! Bruce Blackbeard Sailing Club, New Bern, NC!5

2017 Fred Latham New Years by Doug Longhini The 45 th (first sailed on New Years Day 1973) running of the Fred Latham was a success for everyone who attended. The Blackbeard Ladies of the Club did an excellent job of preparing a traditional New Years lunch of ham, black-eyed peas, collards and all the fixings. Although Fred was unable to attend, the partially restored transom of Mad Mama was on display and will be completed as a perpetual trophy for the event. (Did you know that the original Mad Mama was a light blue in color?) The 8 San Juan 21's, 1 Wayfarer (out for a fun sail) and 1 PHRF (Puck) boat hit the starting line at 1 pm to receive a postponement flag. The PHRF boat fired up its engine and proceeded to marker #17 and ignored the flag. The Race Committee did an outstanding job of getting one race off for the San Juans in 0 knots of breeze on a shortened course of about 4/10 of a nautical mile. The PRO (Bill Jarvis) strayed from the Racing Rules of Sailing and shortened the course by moving the weather mark in about a half a mile after the starting signal. You could hear the cheers from the participants (who would have cheered louder if the wind had moved above 0). One hour plus later Chuck Thompson and Gordon Le Grand in Packer Tacker accelerated across the finish line to take first place. Chuck was asked prior to the start if he had ever won the regatta before and his response was No but today is our day. In order of finish: 1 st Packer Tacker- Chuck Thompson/Gordon Le Grand (traveled from Virginia) 2 nd Deuces Wild- Mark Weinhimer/Randy Eakes 3 rd Orion- Margaret Alexander/ LuAnn Parrins 4 th Hot Sauce- Tim Poole Sr./Tim Poole Jr. Fred Latham relaxing at BSC 5 th Bonaire- Mike Bonner/Gary Peterson 6 th Maddie s Game- Mr. and Mrs. Cliff Game (only husband and wife team) 7 th Kanga- Doug Longhini/John Pitcavage (who had all sorts of performance excuses) 8 th Resonance- Tom Dosier/Aaron Dosier (traveled from Wilmington) PHRF- Puck- Lee Toderick and Family Happy New Year looking forward to number 46. 7 Calling all Cruisers by Jim & Joni Floyd Once again, Blackbeard Sailing Club is boldly going. We just don t know where, or when or with whom. For the first time, BSC is hosting a series of monthly, short-term cruises, with one longish one, but more on that later. These cruises will be tailored for all skill levels and boat types. Newbies will be matched with veterans and each cruise, 1-3 days long, will have a theme. Information will be provided for all who sign up as to destinations, places of interest, emergency info and the like. First cruise will tentatively be in late March, weather permitting, with a wrap-up in November. Fun guaranteed! We hope to be able to integrate these cruises with our day sailors too. If this sounds like your cup of tea, come join us at the clubhouse on February 11, 2017 at 1:00 pm for more information. There is no charge for the meeting or for any of the cruises, unless the group decides otherwise. We Jeff Tsai learns about Markers and Tide. will be setting calendars and destinations and discussing what the group wants to accomplish. This is definitely a work in progress and we need your comments, opinions and input! Plus, there will be an added benefit, to be announced later! The BSC Cruise Committee is comprised of the following: Jim & Joni Floyd, Sally & Andy Johnson, Jeff Tsai, Bruce Woods, Bill & Sandy Drechsler, Ellen & Bill Beery, Bill & Jan Green, and Wes Jorgenson, as observer. Feel free to call any of them for more information. See you there! Dock Box Clean-up Jim Floyd led a mini-workday cleaning dock boxes the day after Thanksgiving. Thanks and kudos to Ian and Lilian Prince and Mike Penney for their assistance. A gentle reminder: everyone's dock box should be labeled with your name and/or your boat name. Please take a look and clean out debris and other excess items stored around your box! You would be amazed at what was discovered! Please store stuff IN your box, not UNDER or AROUND it! Thanks! Blackbeard Sailing Club, New Bern, NC!7

In Wth the New/ Out with the Old Blackbeard Sailing Club is introducing a new feature: informing our membership of those sailing friends who are leaving the club and welcoming those who are joining. IN : Please help us welcome our new members! Cliff and Ann Game Both native North Carolinians, Ann from Hickory and Cliff from New Bern, they now live in New Bern. Cliff works at Cherry Point, and Ann is a former speech pathologist, now a homemaker. Both of their at home kids (they have 2 grown children as well), Will and Mattie, are veterans of ETYSA summer camp, where Ann and Cliff volunteer. In fact, Mattie is an enthusiastic and talented race team member for ETYSA! A captain of many boats, Cliff and Ann currently sail a Hobie 16, a San Juan, an Opti, and a Butterfly. by Jim & Joni Floyd Walt and Karen Meyer Retired Chemist Walt and retired teacher Karen live in Fairfield Harbour. In fact, if you walk to the end of C dock and look left, you are looking at their dock! Both golfers, they split their time between NC, and their lake house in Maine in July and August. Their daughter, son-in-law and the Princess live in New Hampshire, with plans to move to Boston in the near future. Walt and Karen are definitely pushed North and pulled South! Racing?? You bet!! Look for them in their speedy Ensign! OUT: We will miss these friends! Todd & Lynne Cox, living in Oriental and members of ODC, decided they had to make a choice between the two clubs; just not enough time! Todd still plans to continue racing, both from ODC and BSC. They have been happy members, and want to be sure to keep their BSC friendships alive! I am sure we will see them on the river! David & Liz Phipps With Eli, age 10, developing his own interests, Liz and David realized they needed a break from sailing. They just didn t have time! They fully intend to return to sailing and wish all their friends at Blackbeard, Happy Sailing! We will see you on the river in a few years! Robert & Geraldine Reid Derrell & Deetz Mullins Andy & Jennifer Willis Unfortunately, I was not able to contact these three past members. We wish them well! Blackbeard Sailing Club, New Bern, NC!8

Social Committee News by Gay Whitney Social scene was busy late December and January. The New Years Party was awesome this year with lots of good food and uninhibited karaoke participation. What fun!!! The Fred Latham luncheon drew a good crowd. The southern cuisine menu was well received. It was nice to have so many members join the racers for ham, black-eyed peas, collards, cornbread and desserts. Sunday afternoon of the snow/ice event, crafts were cancelled and we changed the format for Funday. It was posted on Facebook as an impromptu and 23 folks showed up at 4 pm for drinks and snacks! We asked folks just to bring their own plates of food and something to share was optional. Joanne and Ed shared a bushel of oysters. Richard and Ed braved the elements and cooked them out on the grills. Please note: we have an informal Facebook page. It is Not Open to the Public, but send a request and I will add you to the roster. No profanity and no politics are the rules. Jan Green and I were hostesses for the Installation Dinner. Arch Altman s jazz band entertained us and many danced. Cousin Vinny" Farro and his wife, Ann, catered the meal. They are new local caterers and musicians from New Jersey. His business is A Pinch of Love Catering and we would highly recommend them. Photos tell the stories! Blackbeard Sailing Club, New Bern, NC!14

Installation Social The ladies made desserts for the Installation Dinner and tried to offer choices for those with dietary restrictions. Jan Green labeled them "Vegan" and "Gluten Free". Her unlabeled one was simply "a delightful special occasion cheesecake full of calories", one of her special recipes (thank you Kraft!). Food labels will be available at all events if you choose to use them. Be mindful that many have serious food allergies or sensitivities and others are sensitive to fragrances. by Gay Whitney Clubhouse Re-Fresh Our buildings have a new look. We went from a woodsy green to a blue - the aquamarine color of water. It looks fresh and clean. Keep watching for other changes on the grounds! There are new plantings designed for the front of the bathhouse. A bright red Opti full of deep purple pansies now greets you at the gate. Blackbeard Sailing Club, New Bern, NC!17

Clubhouse Re-Fresh (Continued from page 18) Ladies, we need to be thankful we did not go through the floor and end up up on the Bike Rack while sitting on the commode! Joe Gormley and Dave Brown (of the BSC House Committee) were installing a new toilet, but when they removed the old one they found a severely damaged floor. The old toilet must have been leaking for several years. Photos by Joe Gormley & Susan McCrocklin Blackbeard Sailing Club, New Bern, NC!19
