BLACKBEARD S EPITAPH NEWS & FEATURES : JUNE 2014 PAGES From the Commodore 1-2 Social Commi4ee Report And Announcements 3-7 Hurricane Arthur s Reign: Part Racing News & InformaDon Dog Commi4ee Report Marine Growth Report / Submissions 26 Previous Important NoDces 27 Save The Date BSC s Annual Shrimperoo, August 9th, 4 p.m... Officers and OrganizaDon 28 From the Commodore I had a bad feeling about the storm that was to carry the name Arthur earlier in the week before it started up the coast and acquired it s name. As the week wore on hurricane Arthur was named and geeng stronger. The forecasters kept moving the track west closer to the coast, then right over the coast. I was happily surprised on how quickly the club members responded on such short noice. Boats started moving out the day before the storm and coninued through the next day. I believe the last boat to leave was around 4:00 PM. July 2. The eye of the storm past us around 2AM July 3 less the 40 miles away, by then it was a category 2 hurricane with top winds of 100mph. 2 From the Commodore continued As it turned out we were spared the worst of it with the club receiving no damage. Three boats went aground but were pulled off with lirle or no damage by members of BSC. I wish to thank everyone for their efforts especially the personal running the shurle service. I hope we don t have to do it again this year, but I think we are berer prepared because of Arthur. Thanks again everyone. If you haven t been at the club for awhile you will find something new. The upgrades to the worlds tallest out house heaing system are complete. It now has air condiioning. The next phase is to replace the ag- ing gas water heaters with new electric ones later this year. OK folks the club needs your help. I m pueng out a call now for people to provide leadership and direc- Ion for the club in Not only do we need people to run for officers but some of our commirees need volunteers also. The finance commiree has done a great job but the current members have served of a number of years and would like a break. This commit- tee looks at the future out 15 years to see where we would like to be money wise, and provides direcion for yearly budgets. They have made my job a whole lot easer. We are looking for a new web master for the BSC web site, and there are other commiree po- siion open. We need your help to coninue making BSC a great place to sail, socialize and just have a great Ime. Please contact me or any of the officers and commiree members for more informaion. 5 SOCIAL COMMITTEE REPORT & CLUB ANNOUNCEMENTS Social Committee Report: Glancing Back, Looking Beyond by Gay Whitney What a busy month on the social scene! And what a joy to have a beautiful, air- conditioned clubhouse so we can extend our socials through the summer. It s a delight to sit on the back deck, enjoy the water and listen to the wildlife. We are blessed to have such a perfect, usu- ally peaceful, spot to enjoy when we are not out sailing. Hurricane Arthur did not slow us down one bit on July 4th. Between water taxi service, we fed brats, hot dogs and Nixin's to 89 folks! Thanks to Eddy and Jennifer Parker for buying and cooking the food. And thanks to the ladies at Blackbeard who organized the set- up, decorations, and made desserts. The July social was Saturday night, the 12th. There was no program planned for this event just dishes to share, socialize and getting to know your fellow members. Lately, members brought games like Mexican Train to play after dinner. August 9th will be the annual Shrimperoo! starting at 4 pm, so expect more of socializing and friendly companay. Our Sunday Funday events are still happening most weeks. The format is informal the ladies meet in the clubhouse early afternoon to work on craft projects. Most make jewelry, knit or crochet. Some just sit with us and drink a glass of wine. About 4:30 p.m. or so, the men folk join us and we socialize on the back deck. Most bring meat for the grill and a side dish to share. Three weeks ago, the forecast was gloomy, so we served a spaghetti dinner to a crowd of 52! Last Sunday was special a Dan Jam with new member and musician, Dan Phillips, play- ing guitar and singing old favorites on the back deck. Mal Harwood joined him playing Blackbeard Sailing Club, New Bern, NC! 5

Summer Socials Coming to BSC WHO YOU CALLIN A SHRIMP? August 9th - 4 pm In years past, the BSC did not have monthly socials during the summer months since the Clubhouse was without air conditioning. Over the past couple of years however, our socials have been very popular with the membership. So, with the Clubhouse now air conditioned, the Social Committee has decided that summer socials deserve a try! So mark your calendars for our next event: August 9th Shrimperoo! - 4 pm till closing! 8 Arthur s Not Always in Camelot 2014 s First Hurricane Hits Home (a collage of stories and photos) FIRST AND FOREMOST: Musing on the Importance of by BIll Green Hurricane Arthur, although it was a minor event for most members, taught us several lessons. There are the obvious ones about hurricane preparedness and anchoring, but there s also a lesson about . Seriously? Yes, seriously, ! Here s the thing Arthur, unlike most hurri- canes in the last several years, didn t give us much warning. We were able to get out two s to the membership, the first on Tues- day warning of possible severe weather later in the week and the second on Wednesday noing that a hurricane warning had been issued for Craven County. Not much noice for a hurricane that hit Thursday night! Of course, it s each member s responsibility to Blackbeard Sailing Club, New Bern, NC! 8

inform him/herself on pending weather events, but we try to assist. And the only pracical method we have at our disposal are the blasts you see coming from All members should understand the importance of keeping their contact informaion up to date by logging into My Account on the members website, and this includes providing valid addresses that you monitor on a regular basis. Another issue that is cropping up more frequently these days, is the use of spam blockers. Whenever I send out one of these blasts to the membership, I get a number of replies similar to the fol- lowing. I apologize for this automaic reply to your . To control spam, I now allow incoming messages only from senders I have approved beforehand. If you would like to be added to my list of approved senders, please fill out the short request form (see link below). Once I approve you, I will receive your original mes- sage in my inbox. You do not need to resend your message. I apologize for this one- Ime inconvenience. Click the link below to fill out the request. Unfortunately, I can t always fill out these requests when I m sending out 200 s at a Ime paricularly when pressed for Ime as we all were when preparing for Arthur. So, PLEASE, PLEASE, if you want to receive Club communicaions, do yourself a favor (and me too) by adding billg501@gmail.com to your approved list! TESTIMONIAL: Anchoring Eroica for Hurricane Arthur by Arnold Giles I anchored early Thursday morning prior to Arthur s arrival. There was a breeze from the South so I set my smaller 30lb Bruce Look- a- like Nirst, 90 feet of 5/16 chain and 100 feet of ¾ nylon rode. Motored East as far as the rode would allow and lowered my main anchor. 40lb Bruce Look- a- like, 10 feet of ½ cable, 80 feet of 3/8 chain and 100 feet of 1 nylon rode. My thinking was that the main bulk of the wind would be from the North and East. All went well and both anchors were pulled up, mud and all, on Friday afternoon with much help from Bill Green and Ian Prince. The wash down pump decided not to work so the mess was not cleaned up till back in the slip. It was then that the damage to the main 1 rope was noticed. I now have two 49- foot lengths of 1 nylon. Blackbeard Sailing Club, New Bern, NC! 9

Attached photos show the severe damage over a 1- foot length right in the middle of the line. This area must have been well away from the boat. The close up photo shows some cutting and abrasion. The most interesting points are the Nlecks of red antifouling paint embedded in the damaged area. OK, so I should replace it anyhow as this rope has seen me well through 4 hurricanes out there in front of BSC. The point is that the rope has been cut or abraded by a boat. I always thought that Eroica had Blue/Black anti- fouling. A propeller may have caused the cuts and damage. Blackbeard Sailing Club, New Bern, NC! 10

Exposed! by Bill Green You might ask, What was exposed by the low water following Hurricane Arthur? Well it s not exactly a scan- dal, but Dave Ritter exposed his bottom on Aloha, that is and Ed Doughty found the football he lost in 1956! And here are the pictures to prove it. The low water also exposed an issue that each member should address at his/her slip. Many pilings have years of accumulated dock lines that dangle into the water, have become barnacle en- crusted, and are useless for securing your boat. The photo accompanying this article shows just one example where one of these lines could foul a prop. As part of regular housekeeping at their slips, all members should cut abandoned lines from the pilings and dispose of them in the dumpster. Blackbeard Sailing Club, New Bern, NC! 11

Racing News and Info with Mark Brennesholtz Tinka and Bill Talbert racing Squirrels on the Highway at the 2014 Hancock Regatta. Turnout was small but Saturday's racing was great, and HYC were great hosts (Zahradka photo) Blackbeard Sends Six to Leukemia Cup San Juan Fleet 8 showed up June 7 for the annual Leukemia Cup at River Dunes. Three BSC SJs Tinka Talbert in Squirrels on the Highway, Branin Thorn in Aarrgh, and Mike AfNlerbach in Wiii competed along with Caleb Wright in his Tartan Impulse, Ed Weber in Longview, and Charlie Nelson in Water Phantom. A good turnout of 38 competi- tors enjoyed two races on Saturday in 8-10 knots. About half the Nleet was in normal class starts, and the cruising half raced in a pursuit start format. Tinka and Clare Lynn won Spinnaker B on a tie- breaker over Margaret Alexander. Third went to Branin, Leanna, and Eli Thorn. Caleb Wright took fourth. Charlie Ninished third in JAM A on a tie- breaker over Ed Webber. Mike AfNlerbach raced his SJ in JAM B and came in second on the losing end of a tiebreaker. Close stuff! No races Sunday due to calm winds. Thanks to Branin Thorn for providing race info. Blackbeard Sailing Club, New Bern, NC! 15

Upcoming Summer 2014 Racing Events August 2 & 3 - CANCELLED -Dragon s Breath Regatta in Oriental. This is the second half of the con- test for sailing supremacy between the Upper Neuse (Blackbeard SC) and the lower neuse (orien- tal dinghy club). BSC took a strong lead in May at the ETYSA Cup with a great and large team. Under the new scoring rules, large numbers of boats can be an advantage, so we need Team Blackbeard to gather again. ODC promises free dockage. I will be recruiting for every class cruising, non- spin and spin to try to hold onto our trophy. ODC is out of blood and will undoubtedly try to overwhelm us. BOTY and SOTY. Con- tact Dave Brookman at or brookmandl@icloud.com. September 20 - NYRA Oriental Cup Regatta, a charity event for college scholarships. Parties begin Friday and continue into Sunday. Contact Doug Longhini. September 27 & 28 - Ensign Invitational in Ori- ental this year. We hope to have a large contingent from the upper Neuse to duke it out down there. Contact Dave Brookman. 18 FHYC / BSC RACING COMBINATIONS Many BSC members, myself included, are also members of FHYC. As the FHYC RegaRa Captain I would like to invite all BSC members to take advantage of the racing opportuniies provided by FHYC. By following the link on the BSC website you can get all the informaion you need on the following list of races open to the public. - Spring and Fall Dinghy Series (mostly Sunfish) on Sunday asernoons - Spring and fall Ensign racing on Thursday asernoons - Tuesday night fun races held from April through October - The Oar Race Rega4a on August 30 Below is a descripion of our Tuesday Night Fun Racing that may be of interest to some of you. Tuesday races have been used as a way of geeng new members on the water and introduced to racing, as coaching opportuniies, crew pracice sessions, husband and wife ouings among the Ensign fleet members and just plain laid- back social events. If you are going to sail on a weeknight make it a Tuesday night. Tuesday FUN Racing Returns - Spring 2014 Tuesday night racing is meant to be fun and informal. By Informal we mean: No Captains meedng No commi4ee boat No scoring No protests No spinnakers No awards No shoudng No stardng line NO FEES (no kidding) Novices are encouraged to come out and sharpen their skills! Boat owners do not need to be members of any sailing club, yacht club, or racing associaion. However, a waiver of liability, which is available on the FHYC website is re- quired to be signed by the boat owner. As always, captains are individually responsible for their own acions and any damage caused. Schedule Races are scheduled each Tuesday from April 8 through October 21. We plan on having a social aner the first race of each month. It will be at the tables outside at NW Creek Marina. Blackbeard Sailing Club, New Bern, NC! 18

Courses On most days, the course will be from 1N to #17 and back. If the wind is stronger, we may suggest twice around. DescripIons of three other courses will be sent to paricipants. StarDng A pursuit start will be used for all races with the first start Ime at 1700 (5:00 PM). Boats without a PHRF raing will be assigned a club raing and start Imes will be sent to each compeitor. A pursuit start means that your staring Ime is computed ahead of Ime based upon your handicap and the course to be sailed. The slower boats start before the faster boats and theoreically everyone finishes at the same Ime. Therefore, the first boat across the finish line wins. We will use VHF- 69 to announce the course, make any changes and give a 10- minute Ime check at You are expected to pass 1N, the start/finish marker within 100. You may pass it on either side, but remember it is a navigaion marker and if at the start or finish you pass it on the wrong side you do so at your own risk. Weather If the weather is quesionable before any race there will be an sent to all registrants no later than 1300 (1 PM) Tuesday anernoon. There will be no racing if there are thunderstorms in the area or if sustained winds at 1300 are over 20 MPH. Note it is possible that at 1300 it will be clear and at 1700 thunderstorms will be in the area. If you hear thunder you know we are not racing. RegistraIon for the regara is at hrp:// QuesIons can be directed to Eddy Parker at eparker@aicpa.org. Blackbeard Sailing Club, New Bern, NC! 19

ICRC Team Racing Rules 2014 The Inter-Club Racing Committee (ICRC) has had the stated goal since 2000 of encouraging PHRF sailboat racing in the Neuse and Pamlico Rivers. Since 2002 it has promoted team racing of the individual clubs at several open regattas each year including at one time the Hospice Regatta (PSC), Hancock Creek Regatta (HCYC), East Carolina Bank Regatta (BSC) and the Dragon s Breath (ODC). In recent years, there has been dissatisfaction with the ICRC scoring and the rules were updated for 2014 to hopefully reinvigorate the competition. 1. There shall be only three classes for ICRC purposes: spinnaker, non-spinnaker and cruising. There can be divisions within each class at the discretion of the organizing authority (OA). Scoring for ICRC purposes will be based on division finishes using high point average system. 2. Each division may have a separate start at the discretion of the PRO. Different divisions may run a different course. The Organizing Authority (OA) should strive to keep the divisions as close to equal in size as possible. 3. To qualify as a team, a club must have at least 5 boats entered. Club affiliation must be determined prior to the start of the first race. 4. The team score will consist of the highest 5 scores based on the High Point Average Scoring System. 5. If there is more than one ICRC team event during the year, the overall team score is the sum of the best two team scores from the individual ICRC events. 6. The team with the highest overall score will win the team trophy for the year. Blackbeard Sailing Club, New Bern, NC! 20

7. Nothing in these rules for this series shall change how the individual OAs score their events in this series, how the classes are split into divisions such as spin A, spin B, non-spin A, non-spin B, etc., except as noted in paragraph 1. and 2. above. Further, the ICRC recommends that all OAs consider the following for all open events: 1. PHRF divisions should be kept as narrow as possible to promote exciting racing. In the past, PHRF ranges of less than about 100 and between about 100 and about 200 have worked reasonably well. The ICRC realizes that these ranges may have to be adjusted depending on the boats entered. 2. All OAs are encouraged to require that every boat entered in the event has a current NC-PHRF rating certificate. A provisional NC-PHRF certificate might be available at late registration if a representative is available. 3. OAs are encouraged to assist visiting skippers with free or reduced dockage at the racing venue. 4. RULES GOVERNING CRUISING CLASS BOATS FOR ICRC RACES 4.1 ICRC recognizes the need to make accommodation for boat owners who may not wish to maintain their boat at the performance level implied by a standard NC-PHRF certificate. These boats are welcome to race in CRUISING CLASS. Therefore, the following guidelines are issued for those boats. 4.2 No boats specifically designed for racing are allowed. 4.3 Only Dacron sails are allowed. No spinnakers are allowed. 4.4 Powered winches are allowed. 4.5 To qualify as a team member an NC-PHRF rating for that particular boat must be issued. 4.6 Two of the four following additional Cruising Class requirements will be met, based on the statements of the boat owner at the time of registration. a.windlass or pulpit mounted anchor b.dodger/bimini in place c.the youngest sail to be 5 years old or older d.bottom paint 3 years old or older Blackbeard Sailing Club, New Bern, NC! 21

RULES GOVERNING ICRC SAILOR OF THE YEAR AWARD The ICRC, in an effort to further promote local sailboat racing, instituted a ICRC Sailor of the Year Award in This award is given to the boat with the best high point average (HPA) score attained from her four best scores in any of the following regattas:! NYRA Invitational!! New Bern!! ECB Cup!!! New Bern! NCOC Offshore!! Beaufort! Leukemia Cup Regatta! River Dunes! Ocracoke Race!! Indian Island! Hancock Creek Regatta! Cherry Point! Dragon s Breath!! Oriental! Oar Race!!! New Bern! Michelob Cup!! Oriental The winner of the award in 2012 and 2013 was Henry Frazer of the Oriental Dinghy Club. Congratulations to Henry for his success in 2012 and Given his skill in sailboat racing, it is a good bet that he will continue with his winning ways as long as he competes! In an effort to encourage other racers to compete, the ICRC has decided to restrict the eligibility for the award to a racer who has not won it the previous year. Thus beginning with the 2014 racing season, the award will be given to the racer with the highest HPA score who qualifies and did not win the award the previous year. 24 BSC Pet Report June 2014 Cats like BSC too!!!! This is from Jan and Bill Green sharing their experiences with Gracie and Chaney aboard Catatonic. Bill and Chaney relaxing and enjoying the breeze while aboard Catatonic sailing on the Neuse. Just a bit of background on our cats: they are both rescue cats that we adopted when they were about 5 years old. Gracie is now 11 and Chaney is 8. They are indoor only, but have free access to our screened-in porch. Because they don t go out, they don t wear collars but have all their shots and are micro-chipped just in case. When we travel to and from the boat, they are in their cages so as not to interfere with driving. On long trips, they sleep, after complaining for the first minutes. Once we reach Blackbeard, we take them to the boat, still in their cages, using a dock cart. When we reach the boat, we open the hatch and open up their cages in the cockpit. Both of them head straight inside. Like the car, if we are maneuvering leaving or returning to the dock we keep them inside. However, once we re underway, they are free to come into the cockpit. When we re moving, they don t try to go past the cockpit area so it s easy to keep an eye on them. Blackbeard Sailing Club, New Bern, NC! 24

On board, we have a litter box and their regular food just like home. They tend to eat and sleep a little less when sailing but it is an adventure with new things to see and hear. My tips would be: Keep them contained when maneuvering when the car or boat is moving. Keep an eye on them and send them back inside when necessary. Have a net handy. (We have never had to use it!) Make the boat as much like home as possible. Jan and Bill, thank you. Thank you for sharing your family with us. I know there are more pets at BSC than you may think. Does anyone have a bird on their boat? I am not referring to sea gulls. Polly wants a cracker!! BSC members please send me pictures of your pet enjoying a sail boating and/or a BSC experience. My is listed below. Be a responsible and considerate pet owner while you and your pets are at BSC. 26 Mid Summer Marine Growth Report Sure, a hurricane came and went, but that didn t slow down growth at all. Tiny barnacles that populated the entire east coast in May and June are clustered on unpainted and uncleared surfaces, and they are growing large. Mossy and slimy algae is growing on virtually anything, even new paints. VC Offshore seems to even be attracting barnacles on hull and rudder edges, and the river mussel clusters that growth on the Trent and that made their way into Fairfield Harbor last year are final at BSC this year, clogging and clustering. A pre-race cleaning of one folding prop on 7/31 had the two folds sandwiching a packed cluster of small mussels. Barnacles are everywhere and props will respond poorly as engines overheats due to the strain of pushing thick blades. Worse than this, pinhole grates are clogging with summer pollen and dirt in the water. Watch for AC and generator flows. - Kirk Hathaway EPITAPH Submission Guideline Please submit: stories and cruising articles how-to s and news committee reports racing news and reports photos in kb event announcements and calendars updated officer and board listings BY the 11th of Each Month for that month s publication. Our plan is to have the publication out as soon after the 15th of every month as is possible, so plan accordingly if your event or listing is to fall before our publication date. With your help, we can keep to a mid-month deadline for publications. Your writing and photography is welcomed. 27 REMINDER: MAJOR CHANGE IN REQUIREMENTS FOR HURRICANE EVACUATION! The BOD has approved a change in the re- quirements for boats vacaing wet slips during a Hurricane. All boats, 27 or longer, are sill required to leave the Harbor. Boats under 27 have the opion of remaining. The raionale is that the lighter boats do not have as much potenial to do damage.
