Snow one weekend and almost 70 the next, you gotta love winter in NC. Spring is right around the corner, and with that, spring workday on March 12. Our dinghy captains have been busy trying to identify owners of boats on racks. Pictures of unidentified have been published in the past couple of Epitaphs. If these boats aren t claimed by workday, they will be disposed of. Richard Schott is putting together a list of workday projects, from rebuilding the steps on the deck, to picking up large rocks in the parking lot where the fill was spread. Remember, gate cards will be changed out on workday so you need to show up to get your new card, or make arrangements with me Blackbeard Sailing Club, New Bern, NC con$nued next page!1

2 From the Commodore (continued from page 1) to get your card at a later date. We understand that everyone can t make workday. If you can t make it, get in touch with Richard and see how you can best help. I know that before/after the last workday some folks filled holes in the parking lot, serviced and repaired all the dock carts and painted the bathhouse, just to name a few tasks. If you haven t been to the club recently you might be surprised by the appearance. We had over 40 trees cut down or trimmed back. The trees on the fence have all been trimmed so the lowest branch over our property is at least 40 feet. The new dry storage area close to the gate has been opened up by the removal of some trees and the trees overhanging the driveway. Windex wrote me a letter complaining that since we cut the trees down they have had to reduce their revenue forecast. In addition to the tree work, all of the windows have been replaced in the clubhouse with new low E Thermal windows. Mark Brennesholtz and Mike Foster led the efforts on the trees, Ed Doughty spread the refuse and Richard Schott worked with the window company to get the windows replaced. Make sure you thank them for their efforts! Here are our current committee assignments. Please contact the chair if you would like to participate on any of these committees: ο Membership: Dave Whitney ο Finance: Bill Braun (Chair), Jan Green, Ed Weber ο Strategic Plan Committee: Bill Green (Chair). Currently, Bob Stevens, John Knie, Jim Floyd, Arch Altman, Bill Drechsler and Eddy Parker have agreed to participate. ο Website Committee: Joni Floyd (Chair). Bill Green, John Knie and Jeremy LeRay are members of this committee. The goal is to make the website more user-friendly. A survey has been developed to send to the membership for their input/needs. ο Bathhouse Committee: Joni Floyd (Chair). Wendy and Arnold Giles are interested in being part of this committee since they were involved in the recent major cleaning project. ο Clubhouse Committee: Susan McCrocklin (Chair). ο Epitaph Committee: Stephanie Davies (Chair). Members include Bruce Woods, Bill Green, Jan Green and Tom Bass. ο Racing: Bob Stephens, Doug King and Gay Whitney If you are not aware, Blackbeard Sailing Club is a member of Boat US. All our members get a discount to Boat US. Our group number is GA82038S. As a final note, for as long as I have been a member of the board, which is over 10 years now, the club loses about 10% of our members every year for various reasons. This means we need a steady stream of new members coming in. Please think about this when you meet sailors around town or in your hometown. If you know of someone who might be interested in membership, especially families with kids, encourage them to come to the club and see what it is all about. 3 US Sailing Arthur B. Hanson Rescue Medal is Awarded for Bravery on the Waterways. PORTSMOUTH, RI (February 1, 2016) The US Sailing Safety at Sea Committee awarded the Arthur B. Hanson Rescue Medals to eight boats for their heroic efforts when a microburst storm hit the 2015 Flying Scot Atlantic Coast Championship, hosted by the Blackbeard Sailing Club, in New Bern, NC on September 12. A rainstorm storm was forecasted, but nobody expected or predicted the accompanying 60 knot microburst. It descended instantly, for a short duration, causing chaos throughout the 23-boat fleet. Many sailors reported having been trapped in lines when the boats capsized. These sailors were able to release themselves from the lines before drowning. Robin Schaffer, who provided assistance to sailors after the storm abated, described it as coming to the scene in the movie Titanic with boats and people in the water everywhere. Several of the eight rescue boats were race committee boats; others came from the shore who recognized additional assistance was needed. A local phone rescue system was utilized where volunteer rescuers input their phone number to the system. People on the water can call for assistance with their message recorded, which is dialed out to all volunteer rescuers. All sailors in distress were recovered with no injuries reported. The following were awarded the eight US Sailing Arthur B. Hanson Rescue Medals at a ceremony hosted by Blackbeard Sailing Club on January 9, The medals were presented by US Sailing Regional Race Officer and Club Judge Joleen Rasmussen. Learn more about the individual rescues in the reports below: Eddie Parker and Richard Schott rescued four sailors Ken Gurganus and Jeff Thomas rescued at least five sailors Dave Brown, Polly Brown, and Joe Gormley rescued one sailor Jim Zahradka and Mark Brennesholtz rescued four sailors Roger Brake and Eric Rasmussen rescued three sailors Skip Byrum and Claire Brock rescued four sailors Malcolm and Robin Schaffer, and Charlie Marr rescued two sailors Bill Harwell and Bill Braun rescued at least five sailors Blackbeard Sailing Club, New Bern, NC!3

4 Spring Workday Spring workday is March 12 th and we have numerous projects posted on the website. Please sign up to help with these tasks. This is our club and these projects will improve BSC. Your new gate cards will be available on workday so don t forget to pick them up when you check in upstairs for your meal ticket. Please bring extra tools such as battery-powered drills and crow bars for working on the docks, rakes and wheelbarrows for the driveway, and pitchforks and hoes for cleaning the drainage ditches. After lunch, Bill Braun will demonstrate the proper use of our new gasoline-powered pump for rescuing sinking boats. Richard Practice Flare Shoot Fairfield Harbour Yacht Club has asked if they could do a practice flare shoot at Blackbeard Sailing Club. BSC members are welcome to attend and participate. FHYC will make arrangements with the Coast Guard and will have a fire truck standing by, just in case something goes awry. If you want to try out some of your old flares, or see how the different devices work, come out on Saturday, April 2 at 1:00. I did this a couple of years ago and it was pretty eye-opening how little time an aerial 12 gauge flare spends in the air. If you haven t done this before, I would recommend you participate. 14 Racing News Not Quite Spring, But Close Enough by Mark Brennesholtz The sailing gods smiled on the NYRA Commodore s Regatta February 20 th. The temps on the water never hit the promised 66, but the breeze held in pretty well in the 8-12 range with the exception noted below. PRO Jarvis ran three races for seven spin boats and three non-spin/cruisers. In the first race, Divine beat Sarah Parker in Granny s Hoe by 13 seconds corrected, while Boartaint beat Drew McCrocklin s Team Elite by 15 seconds. And in non-spin, Bob Stevens in Velocity beat Ed Doughty in Super Bueno by 17 seconds. The racing was even closer in races 2 and 3. One difference was a single second and another was three seconds! On the final leg of the last race, the wind picked up to about 20 knots, which caused some mayhem in the fleet. Tom McKnight got into a death roll and broached. The spinnaker ripped and the lost time allowed Team Elite to pass him and take first. Simo Waananen was not lucky either and tore Divine s spinnaker. Following a broach where a man nearly went overboard, Charlie Nelson in Water Phantom got the chute wrapped around the forestay and could not get it down for more than twenty minutes after the race finish. The forestay was damaged and the kite may have been ripped as well. Dave Whitney in Silent Pursuit saw the carnage ahead and decided not to launch the chute for the final leg and was happy with his decision. The Commodore s Ball banquet later was full of war stories and the awards were well deserved. For the day s racing, Divine took first over Granny s Hoe with two firsts and a fourth. The Hoe had two seconds and a third. In Spin B, Boartaint beat Team Elite by a single point. And in Non-Spin Velocity beat John Jackson and Ed Doughty with two firsts and a second. NYRA Commodore Presents Annual Awards Besides the trophies for the day s racing and the Winter Series (reported last month), NYRA has several awards for boats and crew for performance throughout the racing year, which ended with this regatta. Spinnaker Boat of the Year was Tom McKnight in Boartaint. Non-Spinnaker Boat of the Year was Joe Mattea in Old Glory. Crew of the Year was Dave Furna. Finally, Sportsman of the Year was Doug Longhini. All of these are very prestigious awards in Eastern North Carolina. When you see these folks on the dock, be sure to congratulate them. March, April & May Racing Events March 19 & 20 is the NYRA Invitational. This is a Boat of the Year and ICRC Sailor of the Year event, and the first upriver regatta of Spring. 15 Social Committee News by Gay Whitney Nationally, and at BSC, February focused on heart health. Our Social Committee tries to have a program every now and then. February s social focused on safety and educating members on recent changes at the club that might benefit us all. In spite of horrible weather, this meeting was attended by 58 locals who cooked wonderful food to share. Being housebound inspires many of us to cook, cook, cook our favorite dishes. Our Dockmaster, Bill Drechsler, cautioned us to be more careful with our power cords on the docks. He found one recently hanging in the water. Bill also mentioned that all wooden ladders have been replaced with aluminum ladders that extend deeper into the water for easier access.. He also mentioned that our many fire extinguishers have recently been serviced onsite. Bill Green outlined some features of the new pump we have in the emergency dock box. A new gasoline-powered pump arrived this week. Two members recently had the misfortune of finding sinking sailboats. Bill and others who assisted realized our equipment needed updating. Members were reminded to properly clean equipment they use so it is ready when (not if) needed again. These new pumps are in a dock box marked with a large Red Cross on the walkway leading to C dock. Dr. Kathie King talked about CPR and our new AED (defibrillator). If you call 911 from the club, a team comes immediately from Fairfield Harbour... although it takes 8-10 minutes at best. Every minute counts so we need to be proactive. We are finalizing plans to offer a CPR course to interested members. Our new AED is on the wall next to the big TV and is user friendly/dummy proof. We viewed the video showing the use of this equipment thanks to Chris Davies AV skills and that wonderful smart TV. There is a Good Samaritan Law which protects us from liability. I pointed out the location of a First Aid Kit on top of the AED. Additional kits are located in the tool room below the clubhouse and another in the ladies side of the bathhouse. 17 Special Exhibit on Navigation Before GPS Continues at Oriental s History Museum with a discussion on HAM radios Before GPS, smartphones, and electronic charts, boaters navigated using a sextant, dead-reckoning, and other traditional aids, while plotting their course on paper charts. Early electronics also played a role. LORAN systems, Radio Directional Finder devices, hand-held radio VHF/FM transmitter/receivers were all early electronic aids for the boater. Then and now, HAM radios function as a means of emergency communications, for the exchange of messages, and much more. On Sunday, March 13 at 2 pm at Oriental s History Museum, Tom Finta, a member of the Pamlico Amateur Radio Society, will talk about the uses of Amateur Radios while on long or short cruises. He ll also be discussing the daily radio nets that provide weather and cruising conditions, as well as safety communications for the boater and family members on shore. The current exhibit Hey Mate, where are we? Navigation before GPS, runs through May. For more information contact us at or museum@dockline.net. The Museum is located at 802 Broad Street in Oriental. Hours are: Friday 11-3, Saturday 1-4, Sunday 1-4. Admission is always free. For Sale Catalina Catalina 22 American Pie with trailer. Asking $2,300. 19 Cruising Members! Bahamas Report BSC Member Doug Laurie I just wanted to give you an update on the trip Windfall (me singlehanding), Our Freedom (Tom/Ollie Foster) and Non-Linear (Jon/Marcia Petersen) are having to the Bahamas. As you may know, the weather has been not quite perfect, as the storms, squalls, and fronts continue to roll through the Bahamas. We continue to have multiple day weather stops. We departed Lake Worth, Fl 1/24 and crossed the Gulf Stream hitting the Bahama Banks just above Memory Rock (near West End) stopping at Mangrove Cay. Next day, on to Allens-Pensacola then on to Green Turtle Cay (check into the country). After a weather window it was through the "Whale" and to Great Guana Cay for a stop at Nippers and Grabbers Pubs. Next we travelled from Great Guana to Marsh Harbor where we were able to see the Super Bowl while waiting for a weather window south. Thursday 2/11 we were able to get down to Little Harbor (Pete's Pub and Foundry) where we placed the 1st of the 2 Blackbeard Sailing Club Burgees on the ceiling of the Pub BSC is now a permanent part of the Abacos (pictures and maybe a short go-pro clip will follow once we get some wi-fi). On Friday 2/12 we departed Abacos via the Tongue of the Ocean to an anchorage near Royal Island Eleuthera and yesterday we sailed from the Royal Island area to Rock Sound Eleuthera where we will once again be forced to wait out a number of fronts/squalls before we can cross the Atlantic again for Wardrick Wells Cay in the Exumas. Once we get to Georgetown Exumas we will affix the second BSC Burgee in the "Chat and Chill" at Volleyball beach on Stocking Island in Georgetown. Bahamas Report BSC Members Dave & Polly Brown Have been in Great Harbour for 5 weeks waiting for a prop for our dinghy motor. Finally received it from U.S. Key West Suzuki, air freight, but now waiting for weather to go south to Exumas. Today (February 7) weather is terrible k west winds. We have had a great 5 weeks at this safe hurricane hole. By staying for a month or more, the cost for our boat is about the same as a mooring ball, but we have the same comforts as being at BSC.
