On the 17 th we completed another successful workday. With 115 Members on hand, a little less than our typical 130 to 140, we knocked out a long list of projects. Our tasks were made more pleasant thanks to the music provided by Dan Philips, and we finished up with the best BBQ and chicken lunch ever! Several Members who couldn't make workday, took on projects in advance, cleaning up our fuel depot, repairing dock carts and more. A big thank you goes to the planners, the workers, the cooks and to everyone who participated in one way or another. con$nued next page Blackbeard Sailing Club, New Bern, NC!1

From the Commodore (continued from page 1) I can t mention workday without underscoring the importance of volunteerism to BSC. We re a DIY club. Workday is one example where everyone joins in. Our club thrives (or not) when individuals take on even more demanding roles. Our election of Officers and Directors, all volunteer positions, is currently underway and I urge you to vote for the candidates of your choice. In addition, we have volunteers serving as Dockmaster, Dry Storage Captain and Dinghy/Tender Captains. Then we have our Social, Finance, Race, Membership and Dock Replacement committees. We have Members who serve as Quartermaster and manage the Ship s Store. You guessed it; they function thanks to numerous volunteers who give their time and energy to make your BSC experience the best it can be. I can t say more than, Volunteerism: try it, you ll like it! October saw the passing of the Dinghy/Tender Captain position from one volunteer to two others. Dave Ritter has served in that position for several years and I want to thank him for his service to the Club. Members Wes Jorgensen and Chris Davies have taken on the duties of that position and are available to help you with dinghy assignments. October at BSC went out with a bang, not a whimper, with a Halloween Spooktacular! Look for photos and an article on this great party elsewhere in this issue of the Epitaph. November has some very important events too. Our Annual General Meeting takes place on the 7 th. We re planning a state of the union communication a few days in advance of the meeting and you ll have an opportunity to ask the Officers and Directors in attendance any questions you may have on your mind. Most importantly, the results of the election will be announced. Unfortunately, Jan and I have a conflict and can t be there, but I hope you re planning to attend. We ve had a streak of great fall sailing weather. I hope you ve been able to get out on the water and enjoy it. As the weather turns colder, we begin thinking about the coming holiday season. Please make the most of it and your club! Welcome our Newest Member - Ken Buttler by Chris Davies The latest member to join our merry band of BSC pirates, hails from McLeansville, NC. That s out there near Greensboro and a 3 hour commute! Ken Butler joined on this past work day and as a new member helped with the lunch. Ken is an avid sailor, both in Wayfarer 16 s and on his 32 Seawind II. Ken currently trails his Wayfarer to local lakes and this past summer, went camp/sailing in the Thousand Islands on the St. Lawrence River near Gananoque, Ontario. Currently, Ken keeps his Seawind II up in Columbia on the Albermarle, but has secured slip A-28 here at BSC and will be bringing her here this fall. A sailor for many years, Ken states his hobby as sailing. I m sure he will be an active member. Blackbeard Sailing Club, New Bern, NC!2

Ladies Sailing Class a Big Success by Doug King The first Ladies Sailing Program held at Blackbeard is now history! The program was a cooperative effort between Blackbeard, ETYSA and Fairfield Harbour Yacht Club. We sailed the ETYSA Topazes and were taught by Blair Overman who heads up the sailing program at Camp Seagull. The 4 classes this fall focused on basic sailing skills for women who have spent time on sailboats, but who want to really understand how they work. It was confidence building to be on the helm, to understand what point of sail we were on, and how to tack and gybe, among other skills. The 6 woman felt the classes were very worthwhile and great fun. The instigator and all-around supporter was Doug King. The organizers were Ellen Beery (BSC) and Shirin Scotten-White (ETYSA).We could imagine future classes focused on intermediate level sailing skills, or racing skills. If you have an interest in ladies sailing programs, please speak to one of us. It really works! The class tacking around one of the buoys on their third lesson. Karen and Shirley close-hauled with good boat speed while relaxing at the same $me. Instructor Blair Overman explaining how to sail around the buoys, understand the maneuvers, an$cipate, ac$ons & reac$ons, to keep control at all $mes. con$nued next page Blackbeard Sailing Club, New Bern, NC!3

Ladies Sailing Class a Big Success (continued from page 3) With prac$ce comes confidence. Photos by Ellen Berry Whoa! We already did the capsize lesson! Fall Workday by Chris Davies The weather gods were smiling on us during the semi-annual BSC Work Day this fall. Temperatures were in the 60 s at the start and didn t get much above 75 during the day - perfect for getting the jobs done without working up too much of a sweat. Although the turnout was lighter than usual, many needed chores were completed: fixing and replacing loose dock boards; removing an un-needed dock finger from A dock; cleaning up the brush in the woods and club grounds; identifying illegal dinghies; building a new dock box platform; cleaning up and refurbishing bikes in the bike area; painting and replacing the lock in the front door; and completing other projects to spruce up the club. A sit-down lunch was served in the clubhouse to avoid the swarms of mosquitos spawned by the heavy flooding. Lots of food was available and everyone got their fill. Thanks to all who volunteered. Without your help, BSC would soon become dilapidated Blackbeard Sailing Club, New Bern, NC!4

BSC Pet Committee Report The Rainbow Bridge Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge. When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable. All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind. They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; his eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster. You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart. DON T FORGET BSC members please send me pictures of your pet enjoying a sail and/or a BSC experience. Pet sea stories work too. My is listed below. Be a responsible and considerate pet owner while you and your pets are at BSC. Larry Sorenson llsoren@earthlink.net Blackbeard Sailing Club, New Bern, NC!6

Racing News Halloween Regatta Not So Scary by Mark Brennesholtz The NYRA Winter Series enjoyed a beautiful start on October 24, even if the wind was a bit spotty. PRO Jarvis wiggled the courses around several times and starts were delayed, but the resulting two races were in pleasant 6 to 10 knot-breezes. It paid to tack on the headers, however. On Blue Note, we tacked several times even before we had fully accelerated from the last tack. Having both spinnaker divisions with different winners in two races is always fun. Spin A winners were Divine and Sarah Parker in Granny s Hoe. Bob Barefoot s Rocket 22 took two seconds, Divine and the Hoe both had thirds, to establish a three-way tie to start the series. Cool! Spin B had five boats start with nearly similar results. Tom McKnight in Boartaint took first in race one and third in race two. Blue Note was second and first. Ed Doughty was third and second in Super Bueno. Blue Note is ahead by a point after two races. Team Elite sported a new spinnaker but was slightly off the pace, as was Dave Whitney in Silent Pursuit. Four boats are registered in Non-Spin/Cruising, but only John Jackson showed up with his newto-him Georgie Girl Tartan 34. They showed good speed for first time out. Winter Series races continue November 7 & 21, December 12, and January 9 & 23. It was the Best of Wx. It was the Worst of Wx. Georgie Girl, John Y. Jackson s new Tartan 34, at the start of the NYRA Halloween RegaNa October 24. (Brennesholtz photo) Ensign Blue Note follows Dave Whitney s Silent Pursuit into the leeward mark in the second race of the NYRA Halloween Race (Daly Photo) Fall is supposed to be the best sailing of the year on the Neuse, barring the occasional hurricane. Ten days of rain and north winds caused the cancellation of the First Citizens Cup/Ensign Invitational, ODC s Solo Race and the practice & first Ensign Fall Series race. The strong and persistent northerly winds and rain up to 20 in some local areas produced lots of flooding, including at Blackbeard. con$nued next page Blackbeard Sailing Club, New Bern, NC!10

It was the Best of Wx. It was the Worst of Wx. (continued from page 10) Then the Ensign fleet sneaked in a few races in light air before canceling the October 22 nd race due to lack of wind on an otherwise beautiful day. The good news is that the weather was great for the NYRA Halloween Regatta, the official start of the Winter Series. The four races the seven-boat Ensign fleet has completed have had three different winners and the series is still wide open. The loss of two race dates so far will cause us to race on the make-up date November 12 th. November, December & January Racing Events November 7 is the second date of the NYRA Winter Series. After the Halloween Regatta, remaining race dates are November 7 and 21, December 12, and January 9 and 23. The USSA high point average scoring system will be used, and boats are required to sail 75% of the races to be scored for the series. That probably means that even if you have missed Halloween, you can still be a contender! Boats are now registered in Cruising, Non-Spin, and Spinnaker A & B. There is also a social after racing each race date. Contact Doug Longhini at or ncsailor47@yahoo.com. November 14 is SJ Fleet 8 s Turkey Trot. Ensigns and Sunfish are also invited. This is a long-time San Juan 21 annual event and will be even better with visiting classes. Contact Doug Longhini. January 1 is the 45 th Annual Fred Latham Regatta. Sick of football? Spend New Year s Day on the water. A hot dog lunch precedes the racing. Even PHRF boats are welcome for an informal race out to the river with winners randomly selected or are based on bribes, appearance, etc. Contact Eddy Parker at or eddy52257@yahoo.com. ICRC The Inter-Club Racing Committee will be meeting in early December to work out a PHRF racing calendar for Objectives of the schedule are to avoid conflicts and to make logistics easier to participate at different clubs in the Neuse/Pamlico/Beaufort area. A secondary objective is to encourage turnout by recommending procedures and policies that are consistent in the area. Charlie Nelson is the chairman of the committee. We encourage visitors participation at our meetings. Mark Mark Brennesholtz steers Ensign Blue Note on a spinnaker run just ahead of Dark Side on October 8th. Weather has taken a toll on the Fall Series, but hopefully the worst is behind us. (Zahradka photo) Photos contributed by Blackbeard Sailing Club, Zahradka New Bern, NC!11

ICRC News by Charlie Nelson ICRC Chair As the racing season winds down for 2015, except for the upcoming, much anticipated NYRA Winter Series, the results are in for the ICRC Sailor of the Year (SOTY) for This award is given to the sailor who has competed in at least 4 of the area open regattas held during the year (NYRA Invitational, ETYSA, NCOC, Leukemia Cup, Ocracoke Race, Hancock Creek, Dragon s Breath, Oar Regatta and the Michelob Cup). Only the best 4 are counted. A total of 41 different racers participated in these regattas. Using the USAA High Point Average system, these top 4 races are scored. This year, for the first time, a Non-Spin boat won the Sailor of the Year: Joe Mattea of ODC in his 51 year-old Alberg 35 Old Glory had a perfect score, meaning he took first in his class at least four times in the specified regattas. This should be an inspiration to those with older, high-handicap boats, knowing that all the glory does not go to hot spin boats. Congratulations, Joe. A total of 8 boats qualified, and Joe was the best. Social Committee News by Gay Whitney, This month, I'll let the photos speak for themselves. We had a successful workday where projects were completed and work crews enjoyed a wonderful pig-picking and BBQ chicken. This event provides a good opportunity to get to know fellow members, including many new members who participated and helped serve lunch. Last night, 57 attended our Halloween Social, most in costume. Prizes were given for costumes and door prizes were given to those who registered before the deadline. The winners were: Most original: Phyllis, guest of the Siegendorfs, as Vinnie Best couple: Jim and Jody Fortuna, Scarecrow and Lion from Wizard of Oz Best Male: Chris Davies, the Wizard of Oz Best Female: Tie between Donna Deans, aka Tom Brady and Stephanie Davies, Dorothy from Oz. (Side note: Hal Deans came as a deflated football very clever costumes that got lots of votes) This was the toughest judging gig ever! My friends outdid themselves with clever costumes and theatrical makeup. The original three judges each voted for someone different so we randomly asked three more judges for their votes. We still didn't agree!!! In sheer frustration, we asked the audience to clap for a winner. Next year, we need a new category of best presentation of food. This year that would have been another tie and the judges would truly have pulled our hair out. Join us soon you miss a lot if you miss our gatherings! Bill Jarvis being a\acked by Giant Spider After his hard work helping the ladies with Halloween Party setup, Bill Jarvis was viciously attacked by the spider which dropped from the ceiling. Glad to report Bill survived. Blackbeard Sailing Club, New Bern, NC!12

Dive Report!!!Scary Waters??? by Kirk hathaway Well, there's no Trick or Treat here, just the truth. The water is finally cooling down, so 2015's heavy marine growth is slowing down at last. Is that the only good news for the Neuse River Region? For Blackbeard Sailing Club, as well as Fairfield Harbour at Northwest Creek, Broad Creek, and its "Inner Harbour," 2015 has been a literal shell game. The Inner Harbour's private docks, as well as the waters entranceway and associated marinas have been littered with the river mussels that three years ago were only in the Trent River at New Bern marinas. Likely, they migrated into Fairfield with vessels returning from New Bern outings. They were found first above Harbour Point and on vessels closer to the Inner Harbor's entrance way. This year these mussels clobbered vessels at Blackbeard, Shoreline, and Bird Land marinas. Worse than this, barnacles then made a late summer, ugly attack in Broad Creek unlike anything found even further downstream. From above Harbor Point on Broad Creek down into the outer docks of Blackbeard and at Northwest Creek into Northwest Creek Marina's outer docks, large clustered barnacles came on and grew full size in just weeks, making it nearly impossible for vessels to get underway if not cleaned within two to three weeks. Removed in July and August, barnacles kept coming on heavy through September, with even those vessels cleaned in September presenting the seedlings of small barnacles in October. In cooler waters, barnacles will not come on as heavily, but once there, barnacles will grow steadily throughout the winter. Whether from salts and enzymes from upriver hog farms or from the contribution of high wind tides from summer storms, the Neuse seems as much a haven for shell growth as docks much closer to the sea. On the other hand, zinc burns at BSC have been normal with 1" and 1 1/4" anodes lasting a typical three to five months when vessels are protected with two anodes, a second one added when the first is found 80-90% remaining. This is typically one to two months after an anode is installed as it tends to burn 5-10% a month with streamlined anodes failing at 60%. One option we are considering for 2016 and have tested for over a year is a sacrificial line cutter. With its Shark Shaft like razor sawtooth-edge, a collar-like zinc is bolted to circular blade which is cut in half to match the donut-like anode. Having a heavier or more stable zinc make-up than most anodes, this cutter anode made on the west coast lasts about three times longer than a traditional streamlined anode and only needs to be replaced every year and a half (give or take a few months). For racers concerned about water flow, consider that Cape Carolina Dive Service will install a streamlined anode forward of this. Such has been the standard practice of the racing vessel Il Gatto out of Oriental's Sea Harbor Yacht Club, a familiar competitor to many of the region's races. We have been monitoring Il Gatto's system of using this for over a year. It doesn't seem to slow down Joe Valinoti's sailing passions, prowess, or performance. And his vessel has had no problem with crab pots or line entanglement with its added feature. Of course, this line cutter anode is a bit more expensive than the standard, but imagine the relief of a little less Trick or Treat while underway! Blackbeard Sailing Club, New Bern, NC!16
