1 BLACKBEARD SAILING CLUB Upper Broad Creek On The Neuse January 2010 Volume 38, Number 1 ALL THE NEWS THAT S IN THE WINDS (252) COMMODORE Lu-Ann Perryman \ VICE-COMMODORE Dave Whitney SECRETARY Jan Green TREASURER Suzie Williamson DIRECTORS Ken Laws Doug Longhini Tom Wynn George Nauman Bill Drechsler Janet Harrison DOCKMASTER Pete Moore DINGHY & DRY STORAGE Ted Clark (Dry Storage) Jon Petersen (Woods) John Stokes (Dinghies) EDITORS Bill Green George Myers bscepitaph@yahoo.com bscdirectory@gmail.com From the Commodore The start of the New Year brings resolutions we all hope to keep. One of mine is to spend more time on the water. Hopefully, we can all take more time to use the wonderful club we have been blessed with, and to renew the relationships forged. Starting this month, I will select a club rule and print it here so that we can all refresh our memories. It is the responsibility of each member to know and abide by these rules. This month will also list the NC Alcoholic Beverage Commission rules that the club must follow if we are to keep our ABC license. The Rules Corner Under club s General Rules & Regulations, the first two rules cited are: It is the responsibility of each member to be familiar with the bylaws of Blackbeard Sailing Club and the Blackbeard Sailing Club general rules and regulations. These are posted in the clubhouse, posted on the Blackbeard Sailing Club Web site, and are included in the membership package given all new members. It is the responsibility of each member with a boat at Blackbeard Sailing Club to be familiar with the Slip/Dry Storage Rental Agreement and the Blackbeard Sailing Club Dock Policy. These are posted in the clubhouse, posted on the Blackbeard Sailing Club Web site, and are included in the membership package given all to new members. The Dock Policy: # 1 is: The Dockmaster, appointed by the Commodore and approved by the Board of Directors, is responsible for all slip assignments, sublicensing of slips, and maintaining the waiting list for slip assignments. The Slip License Agreement: 3. Member will provide fifteen (15) days advance written notice to Dockmaster, of intention to terminate agreement and vacate slip. If such notice is not provided, Member will be liable for all charges, up until such time, as Blackbeard Sailing Club has determined that Member has indeed relinquished said slip. 4. Member will not occupy any slip other than as assigned herein, unless approved in advance by the Dockmaster. If a Member wishes to sublicense their slip, the Dockmaster will offer such slip to the next Member, in order, on the waiting list. Such sublicensing by members will be limited to 90 days. Request for extension must be made in writing to Blackbeard Sailing Club Board of Directors. Swapping of slips between Members is not permitted. Only the Dockmaster can change slip assignments. ABC Regulations BSC has been granted a Brown-Bagging Permit for a Private Club by the NC Alcohol Beverage Control Commission. The permit authorizes each individual patron of an establishment (BSC), with the permission of the permittee (BSC). Under the permit places limits on the amount of spirituous liquor, fortified and unfortified wine, and malt beverages that an individual can have on the premises. The permit requires that individuals label their alcoholic beverages with their name as it appears on the membership roster and that any storage on site must be under lock and key with the individual maintaining custody of the key. The permit requires that any alcoholic beverages left at the Club unattended be immediately destroyed. This is the short version. If you have nothing better to read me and I will send you the complete regulations. Read them before you go to bed for a great night s sleep! Let s start 2010 off right, by getting to know the members and the Club! Good weather will be here soon, let s go sailing! Lu-Ann Perryman

2 January 2010 Page 2 BSC BOARD NOTES Important Issues & News from the Board of Directors Welcome New Board Members The BSC Board welcomed new board members Janet Harrison and Bill Drechsler to the first board meeting of the New Year. New board member George Nauman had an excused absence due to a scheduling conflict. Easement Project Board member Doug Longhini has been in talks with the Fairfield Harbour Property Owners Association (POA) about obtaining an easement for utilities. The Board has been exploring the ability to hook onto the sewage system at Fairfield. Since we are water customers, we will be allowed to hook on to the sewage system when we are able. Our current sewage system was fine when BSC started, but is it inadequate in size now and is aging. BSC has negotiated an easement agreement with the input of our attorney and the BSC Board voted to authorize the Commodore to sign the agreement once the Fairfield POA has sent their executed document. This effort will position BSC for the long term needs of our Club. Dock Maintenance Work was completed on the B Dock finger piers. Finger pier hardware on the outermost half of B Dock showed severe corrosion making them unsafe. This was discovered when a finger pier collapsed late last year. Luckily, no one was hurt. Ken Laws will be heading up a team to inspect all finger piers in the near future. Treasurer Preparing Survey Treasurer Suzie Williamson is preparing a survey for the membership. The survey will list projects at the Club in no particular order and ask the membership to prioritize them. Suzie is working on the survey and she will place an announcement in the Epitaph prior to the survey. Insurance Requirements & Lease Agreements Dockmaster Peter Moore reported that members were sending in the required documents. There are still about 30 missing. Those not received will have a notice in your first quarter invoice. Thank you to the membership for helping the board complete member information for the files! Good Member Turnout for Board Meeting About 20 members attended the board meeting this month. Several members shared their thoughts and ideas with the board. Thanks for attending! Please take the time to attend a board meeting. Member input is valued. Board Meeting Flexibility Discussed Board member Bill Drechsler asked the board to consider holding a few board meetings on Saturday mornings in an effort to make general membership attendance more convenient. The board is discussing this as a possibility for the spring and/or summer months. If you have comments about this proposal, please me at LCOE@BELLSOUTH.NET. Date for February Board Meeting The date for the February board meeting is Friday, February 5, All board meetings are held at the BSC Clubhouse and are scheduled for the 1 st Friday of the month (unless there is a conflict) and start at 7:30 p.m.. The meetings are open and members are encouraged to attend. Lu-Ann Perryman Commodore

3 January 2010 Annual installation & awards dinner - a good time was had by all. (Janet Harrison photos) Page 3 BSC Cruising in promises to be a great cruising year at Blackbeard s. Our first event on 4/24-25 will be a fun overnight raft up and mini-cruise to New Bern. After the raft up, we will shuttle into New Bern and enjoy a group feast at a local restaurant. Time and details will be announced when we get closer to the event. The main cruise event scheduled for 2010 will be a long distance cruise beginning Friday evening on May 28 th and run through Sunday, June 6 th., making stops up the ICW then over to Manteo. Then after a stay, down the Pamlico Sound to Hatteras Village and Ocracoke then home. Suggestions and input will be greatly appreciated. Not everyone will be able to leave and return on the same time and date, so we will coordinate rendezvous points. We can also arrange boat pairs for similar speed boats that would like to travel with someone. We will communicate via cell phones and VHF radio. The details and itinerary will be worked out with prospective travelers when the date gets closer, but we already have four boats planning on going. Thanks to Les and Susanne Pendleton for their advice and suggestions. Please me at jimfortuna@gmail.com if you have ideas, or are interested in knowing about or participating in the trip. Manteo, NC (Google Earth) If there is enough interest, we will have a third cruise before the weather gets cold, and before the lucky ones sail south for the winter. Jim and Jody Fortuna

4 January 2010 Page 4 Race News Suddenly Wintry Winter Series Nobody seems to remember the last Winter Series race that was cancelled due to cold. NYRA rules state that a race date will be cancelled if the forecast real feel is 35 or below as reported the day before. Good rule in my opinion, and I didn t hear too many complaints from others on December 19 th. Actual windchill was in the 20 s. Anyway, no races. Then, guess what? Ditto on January 9 th. I m exhibiting racing withdrawal symptoms. Luckily, the forecast so far for January 23 rd is about thirty degrees warmer. Hopefully that will stick. Ed Doughty & Ted Clark rigorous prep for racing (Brennesholtz photo) Fred Latham New Years Regatta - Perfect (almost) New Years Day may not have seemed like a great day with temps in the low 50 s and solid overcast, but the 6-10 knot North West breeze in the creek was enough to make the races very tactical at the start and on all legs. Starting out with the traditional hotdog lunch in the clubhouse, served up by Mike Harrison and Mike Bonner, ten SJ 21s competed, roughly half spinnaker and half non. Picking the windward lanes with more air made a big difference. Three races were completed and the rain held off just long enough to finish the Regatta. And not to be left out, Fred Latham s boat Mad Mamma made it out on the water to keep the 38 th tradition alive and well. A team of volunteers put it together and headed out of the harbor in a very light breeze to sail up and down the creek for a nice sail on February, March, April Racing Events January 23 is the final race date of the NYRA Winter Series. February 20 is the one-day NYRA Commodore s Cup Regatta. This is separate from the Winter Series, and the NOR should appear soon on Contact Bill Jarvis at or bjarvis1@suddenlink.net. March 27 & 28 is the NYRA Invitational for PHRF and SJ 21s. The venue will probably be the new Bridgeton Harbor Marina again this year. This will be the first March race in many years. Contact Bill Jarvis (see contact info above) Racing Calendar is Set The Inter-Club Racing Committee (ICRC) has completed work on the 2010 racing schedule for the Neuse area. A couple of notable items of interest to many sailors: New Years Day. Fred helped from the end of B Dock with a slew of pictures as it passed. In the first race, Jeff Thomas in Duct Tape started on port at the RC after ducking the fleet. But the wind was better to the right, so he and several others who tacked early, made it to the windward mark first. Jeff s spin set was flawless and he held his lead around the gybe and leeward marks, finishing first. In the second race, wind seemed to be better to the left, and most boats went that way, but there were many tacks up the middle. Dan Bornath in Black Jack was behind early, but managed to work up through the fleet to round windward in first place. This time, the course was windward leeward, and Dan gybed to port and kept the rest of the spin boats, including Jeff, well covered on the run. To say the racing was very competitive would be a gross understatement. After the 2 nd race there were four tied for first place in Non- Spin and two tied for first place in Spin class. This made the 3 rd race the one for all the marbles for sure. There will be a Junior Naval ROTC fundraising regatta on May 15 th. Doug King and Jerry Rezab have been instrumental in getting this off the ground and procuring a small fleet of FJs. The races will be in Flying Juniors in a round robin format, a la college regattas. The Hancock Regatta in July has been added as a third ICRC Team Race. This has always been a popular regatta, and we look forward to having at least four full teams participating. The Michelob Cup is back on Labor Day weekend. The Oar Race will resume on Saturday as a feeder race to Oriental, and the Michelob Cup will be Sunday. Great new schedule. A copy is included in this month s Epitaph. Mark Brennesholtz With a light drizzle beginning, the boats headed to shore after the third race to pull out, dry off, and present the awards. In Cruising Class, Archer Watkins and his crew of volunteers took top honors in a small cruising fleet that took sail out to marker #17 and back. 1 st 2 nd 3 rd 4 th Spin. 5 January 2010 BSC Junior Sailing Program Fills Its Sails There s talk going around about a Junior Sailing Program starting up at Blackbeard. Wouldn t that be great? Proposals were made to the BSC Board at two of the fall 2009 meetings; a business plan for the program has been drafted and a copy has been available in the clubhouse. The basic idea encompasses a wide range of ideas and possibilities, but focuses on making it easy for Blackbeard kids to learn sailing skills &and have fun at the club. This will be a structured and fully supervised activity with lesson handouts, on-land sessions and, of course, the young people will be given time on the tiller. For boats, we have arranged to use several small boats including Sunfish, thanks to generous Blackbeard members. We expect to spend a fair amount of time getting these boats organized for use by the kids, so that everything stays in good order. After the first day of the program, the kids themselves will be rigging and unrigging, but we need to have everything organized for them. The schedule is open. Many other clubs have youth activities scheduled every Saturday that doesn t conflict with other club events. This way participants can be assured of something available, but, correspondingly, it will also impose a steady burden on the instructors. We definitely want feedback to get coordinated on the scheduling. Eventually, if it proves popular enough, we could expand the program. Many other clubs have a dedicated floating dock and fleet of youth boats. The program s fleet could be a ready-made one-design class here at Blackbeard, and we could also host junior events believe it or not, high school sailing is an internationally recognized sport. There are several teams in our region and in the Triangle. The fun is not necessarily limited to kids; depending on the boats we choose, the program could include sessions for adults. You re never too old to learn to roll-tack! A number of volunteers have already stepped forward. This program is well on its way to becoming reality. If you have a young sailor (or potential sailor) who would like to participate, or would like to volunteer (there is plenty of work to go around), please contact Doug King at Or (dougking888@yahoo.com). Thank you! Doug King Finance Committee Members Needed Because a member of this committee has a other pressing commitment (Johnnie and Anakah Harrison's new baby, which should have arrived by the time you read this, we have an opening. We could actually use a couple of people to help out with our work. The committee meets about six times a year when drafting the budget and reviewing the Capital Projects Program. There are other items on which the bboard may request a review but they are normally taken care of by and phone. Please give me a call ( cell) or e- mail (ncsailor47@yahoo.com) if you are interested. Doug Longhini Membership Committee The following candidates have applied for membership: Alan and Judy Hills from New Bern. They are being sponsored by Tom Wynn and Skip Byrum. If you have any comments or concerns about these applicants please contact Joni Floyd at , or Ken Cavisten at Thanks!! Joni Floyd Page 5 Greetings From Crete BSC Members John and Brenda Kitson visit Crete for the Holidays. Brenda outside the Havana Club. Brenda came over to visit me in Crete for a couple of weeks during the holidays. We spent some time exploring the mountains, and spent Christmas and a couple of days afterward in a small village called Zaros. We stayed at a small B & B with huge Cretan breakfasts, all organic and local fresh foods, and incredible hospitality that made it truly a wonderful experience. During New Years Day we visited the ancient coastal city of Chania (pronounced, Hania ) on the north shore of the island of Crete near where I am currently stationed at the NSA (Naval Support Activity) Souda Bay base. Like much of Crete, Chania has been a center for commerce, and the old port area has been populated for more than 4,500 years. This busy harbor for both fishing and yachting interests now operates where Minoan shipping once ruled this part of the Mediterranean and Libyan seas. The fact no ancient fortifications were built around the harbor until nearly 1500 years ago is a testament to Minoan sea power as far back as 1,900 BC. As Greece was not then yet a country as we know it now, Minoa was the island nation now known as Crete, to whom all of the city states, such as Athens, Marathon, and Sparta, paid tribute for more than a thousand years. As myth has it, one of the first labors of Hercules was to defeat the Minoan bull (the symbol of the civilization) so that Athens would no longer have to bow to the Minoa King. Fair winds to all our sailing buddies back in port. We hope to see you all soon. John Kitson
