This phrase is generally attributed to an old African proverb that can be translated as, It takes the whole village to raise a child. You might well ask, What s the relevance of this to Blackbeard Sailing Club? I assure you, it s nothing political, but rather an acknowledgement that it takes all of us every single BSC Member to chart the course for our Club and then steer it, sometimes through stormy seas, safely to our destination. So this is my appeal for you to get in- con$nued next page Blackbeard Sailing Club, New Bern, NC!1

From the Commodore (continued from page 1) volved in managing your Club. How? Let me count the ways! In November this year, the Membership will elect three directors to two-year terms. In addition, we will elect the club s officers: the Commodore, Vice Commodore, Treasurer and Secretary. Together with the two directors whose terms carry over for another year, these folks will preside over the club during the coming year. Before you say you don t have any experience as a club director or officer, let me add that experience is a plus, but equally important are fresh perspectives and ideas! At the July board meeting we formed a nominating committee to look for the slate of members to fill these positions. Please contact Charlie Batchelor, Eddy Parker, Gay Whitney or me if you think you might be interested. BSC also has four permanent committees Race, Social, Membership and Finance that are very important to the Club. They can always use more help. Contact Eddy Parker, Gay Whitney, Dave Whitney or Bill Braun. We also have ad hoc committees that need your help Pets, Docks and Nominating. Contact Larry Sorenson, Dave Whitney or me, respectively, to help on one of these committees. And there are numerous functional roles in our club where help is constantly needed. In addition to the assigning of wet slips, dry slips and dinghy racks, there is the Epitaph, the website, and the numerous communications you receive. These things don t just happen by magic; they take on-going, persistent work. Some of these roles have been filled for many years by one individual. Those folks need backups and they can use your help! Contact me if you re willing to help in one of these areas. Here s my last request. Please go back and re-read this article from the beginning. Do you see the same names cropping up over and over? Get the point? To paraphrase a WWI recruiting poster, Blackbeard Needs YOU. Bill Green Yachting Club of America Did you know that Blackbeard Sailing Club maintains a membership in Yachting Club of America? The primary benefit for BSC members is reciprocity at more than 700 yacht clubs across the country, giving you access to these clubs and their facilities. The privileges available at each club are listed in YCA s Reciprocity Guide. As a BSC member, you can log onto the YCA website at ycaol.com for access to a digital version of the guide. See MEMBERS CLUB DOCU- MENTS YACHTING CLUB OF AMERICA for the logon information needed to access the YCA website. Please note that if you take advantage of our Yachting Club of America privileges at another club, be prepared to prove you are a member of BSC. You will need your gate card with you for this purpose. Our YCA membership is a great resource. Let s make good use of it! Blackbeard Sailing Club, New Bern, NC!2

ETYSA Summer Camp Moving Forward by Doug King Summertime at Blackbeard has become the season for boxy little boats covering the beach. The volunteers and kids of the Edward Teach Youth Sailing Association bring a fleet of Optimist prams into action, with the kids learning the ropes and the knots. This summer has seen a major expansion of ETYSA on several fronts. First, because last summer s camps were full, we added a 4 th week. Then, in order to keep the advanced sailors advancing and the beginners still covering the basics, we have three hired instructors supplementing the volunteers. The last big jump was buying more new boats! The Topaz sloops are the perfect size, they perform quite well, and they have been a big hit in every way. New ETYSA boss Arch Altman achieved his US Sailing Level 1 certification this spring, along with Lillian s dad Ian Prince adults in ETYSA are often identified by their kids names. Both Arch and Ian are sailors of great experience and enthusiasm, and they have already done a good job directing the sailing camps. This summer we hired sailing instructors for the first time. Sarah Parker is a familiar face who is leading the advanced sailors. Wyatt and Peyton Russell moved to North Carolina this spring, and have been involved in sailing for over ten years back on the West Coast. One afternoon when the seabreeze was up, they put on a thrilling demonstration of how to make a 420 get up and go. These young sailing coaches have done a very professional job handling three separate groups of kids on the water. That s right: we have three groups, each usually between 7 to 12 kids, going out on the water daily to practice sailing skills. The beginners are still learning how to steer with a tiller, how to keep track of the wind direction when the boat is swinging around, and how much fun it is to capsize and recover in other words, becoming selfreliant little skippers. The advanced group works on everything from reading wind shifts to sailing backwards. Sometimes the advanced sailors practice racing, but one big adjustment this summer has been learning the differing and equally important jobs of skipper and crew. The intermediate group has a wide range of skills, they are already skippers and do not need to be towed (sailing out/in the BSC basin is a special challenge) but they have to work on sailing steadily on a given point of sail, gybing safely, and developing skills the advanced sailors carry out instinctively. Blackbeard Sailing Club, New Bern, NC!3

ETYSA Summer Camp Moving Forward Every year, every summer, ETYSA has gotten better and better. We ve kept to a high standard for educating our young sailors, and they have kept to a high level of skill and a spirit of teamwork. Many people work hard to make this happen. For example one reason all four camps are full this summer is that Clare Brock, Sarah Afflerbach, and Irene Vuich have organized and publicized everything smoothly. Doug Longhini, Alan Hills, Jim Abell, and John Vuich volunteered their motorboats as well as their time. Because of their generosity, Andy Johnson, Janet Harrison, Chris Hill, Jim Gruenebaum, James Courtney, Mike Afflerbach, Bruce Webb, Jerry & Mal Harwood, and Dave White had the opportunity to play sailing coach. Jim & Joni Floyd have great expertise working with nervous newbies on capsizing and the initial steps of really sailing. John Burke volunteered for the sail camps and also repaired two Optis. Dave White and Shirin Scotten-White not only help with the camps but they also serve on the ETYSA Board and provide us with two of our best young sailors. The youth sailing program has been a lot of work. It is a lot of fun but it is also a serious task. If you were to (continued from page 3) ask, everybody would quickly say that it s very much worthwhile especially the kids! THANK YOU ALL!!! Doug Blackbeard Sailing Club, New Bern, NC!4

Too Hot for Racing! by Eddy Parker The Dog Days of Summer are here and it has been mighty hot out on the river. There were two races this month, but Mark and I were both out of town so we can t report too much on what happened. Ed Doughty raced New York Times in the Indian Island to Ocracoke race, which is a 30-mile dash across Pamlico Sound. From my recollection of what occurred after talking to Ed which means this may or may not be true the race started out with very light breeze. Ed said he had all of his sails up, including the blooper and moved at a gentle pace across the sound. After a full day of racing, Ed finished third behind Esso Bee and a big trimaran which passed him at the finish. The real story is about the ride to Terry Hanchey s house before the regatta, but from what I hear, it would be best not to put that information in print. The 50 th edition of the Hancock Regatta was run as well, with a very low turnout this year. No BSC boats were entered. Boartaint won the spinnaker fleet; Old Glory won the Jib and Main; and Kara S won the cruising fleet. Since no one was there, I will report based on prior years. It was very hot with no wind until a thunderstorm came through and wiped out the fleet. There was a great party at their newly renovated clubhouse and the new docks look great. Someone won and someone else lost. The Marines were out in their safety boat to keep an eye on all those crazy sailors and everyone went home tired. Blackbeard s next event is August 22 and 23. The BSC One Design Regatta has really grown over the past couple of years and we hope to have another big turnout this year. So far I have heard from the Flying Scots, Tanzers, Buccaneers, Wayfarers, Sunfish and San Juans that they hope to have a fleet. There is a possibility of some FJ s or 420 s for the high school and college sailors. The Optis and Topazes will be racing in the creek on a separate course. If you aren t racing but would like to participate, this event usually takes more volunteers because some of the boats are not self-rescuing and we need additional boats and people to monitor the course. Let Gay Whitney know if you would like to help out with racing. We will have a cookout immediately after racing on Saturday with hamburgers, brats and all the fixins for $8.00/person. We could also use some help with cooking; so if you are more inclined to sit under the picnic shelter and grill some burgers and brats, please let Joanne Doughty know and she will put you to work. Events like this help showcase our club and are a part of why, as I am sure our commodore has noted in his message, we have reached our membership cap and have a waiting list. The NOR for the BSC One Design can be found under the racing tab on the BSC website. We keep the cost of this regatta low, so come out and play if you have a one design boat. 6 Social Committee News by Gay Whitney Our July 4 th hot dog dinner was another hugely successful event. We fed ninety-plus hungry folks and cleaned up in time to sail downtown to watch fireworks. Thanks again to the volunteers who set up, cooked lots of hot dogs, and/or cleaned up. Next, please note we are recycling bottles and cans in the clubhouse on a trial basis. We bought two light brown plastic containers one to use while the other is in transit. If you note it is full, feel free to take down to Recycle on 55 just after you turn towards town. It is open Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday or Sunday (afternoon only). Same with the bags of cans below the clubhouse now about those stinky cans, we stopped it for awhile but folks noticed and asked why help is appreciated. Taking them across town to metal recycle (for token amount of cash) truly was a nasty thankless job and labor intensive. If they build up, we can start throwing them in the dumpster again but let s try once again. On August 8, we are having our annual Shrimparoo and chicken dinner. For new members, this has been a popular event in past years and all we ask is for you to register before the deadline so food can be ordered. We plan to serve at 4 p.m. and enjoy air-conditioned comfort. OR... This event was originally started as a way to get people to leave the dock and use their boats, and to that end the party was a big raft up on the creek. I think the first year we cooked shrimp on the bow of Chuck and Willie Warner s Out Island 41. If you have seen one of these has a lot of bow area. We are bringing back that tradition and we will have a raft-up in Broad Creek, if weather permits. So, get your boat out of the slip, go sailing on the river and join us in the creek for some shrimp. Raft-up starts at 2 p.m. and everyone should bring something to share. Send questions to Eddy and let him know you intend to raft-up: eddy52257@yahoo.com. Brown Eyed Girl will set an anchor to get things started, but we ask additional folks to drop an anchor to keep the boats in place. Our deadline to register is Saturday, August 1 at 5 p.m. The club provides shrimp and chicken and members bring appetizers, side dishes and desserts. When you register, please tell us the category of food you are sharing. Our July Social was a small group of 41. After dinner many of us sat around on the deck enjoying our priceless view and we decided on the spot we needed more seating for nights such as that one. Someone picked up 15 new chairs the next morning! Gay Blackbeard Sailing Club, New Bern, NC!6

Do You Tumble? I thought tumbler was the correct word for a tall water glass. How wrong I was! Wikipedia gives the following possible definitions for tumbler. Who knew? Device or object Tumbler, a flat-bottomed beverage container for drinking made of plastic, glass, etc. Tumbler, part of a lock Tumbler, a machine for tumble polishing solid material Roly-poly toy, a type of toy that can tumble over and then straighten up by itself Tumbler, the button on top of a chess clock Tumble dryer, for drying clothes Entertainment Tumbler, a fictional human super-villain and enemy of Captain America The Tumbler, a Batmobile vehicle in Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight Trilogy The Tumbler, an album by John Martyn Science Tumbler, the pupal stage of a mosquito Tumbler, a pigeon breed known for their particular flight pattern Other Cryptocurrency Tumbler, a service to mix and anonymize cryptocurrency Tumbler, a person performing acrobatics Tumbler, a person who somersaults in cheerleading Tumble (disambiguation) Tumblr, a microblogging platform Tumbler, in the Xanadu computer system, a unique identifier of a unit of text or an embedded link No matter which definition for tumbler you d like to use, the fact is that many of our tall water glasses seem to have walked away from the kitchen cupboards. They are probably victims of the extremely hot and thirsty weather we ve been having. So if you might have left one somewhere around the grounds or on your boat, please repatriate it to the kitchen! Blackbeard Sailing Club, New Bern, NC!8

All Hands Now don't mistake me, I am not advising cruelty or brutality with no purpose. My point is that cruelty with purpose is not cruelty it's efficiency. Captain Bligh What the Captain meant to say: Thank you in advance for emptying the garbage cans - all of them: the kitchen, under the clubhouse and the grill area. Please do not leave a party without insuring that the kitchen garbage is taken to the dumpster. Thank you for using the blower located in the tool room to blow out the area under the clubhouse. If the concrete is clean, we do not track as much dirt into the clubhouse. Thank you for using your creativity to clean the dock boxes. If you have a pressure washer and can get friends to bring hoses, your work day is complete early. Captain Archer Recycling is Back! Recycling has been an off-and-on-again thing at BSC. It s back but needs your support to be successful. First of all, you need to know that BSC is not covered by the local community s recycling program. This means that our recycling is not picked up. We need to collect it ourselves and deliver it to Craven County s Convenience Center on Hwy. 55 or to the commercial metal recycler in New Bern. For a long time we took metal cans to the recycler; However, that became a chore no one wanted to do. The un-rinsed cans piled up, creating an unpleasant odor and attracting insects. We stopped recycling and simply put metal cans into the trash. Member Steve Dark has kindly volunteered to take metal cans and plastic bottles to the county Convenience Center. We ve deployed brown plastic bins where you can deposit these items only. Please do not put any other trash into these containers. That will force Steve to separate the recyclables from the trash and we won t have a willing volunteer for very long! Oh, and if you see a full recycle bin, help Steve out by taking it to the Convenience Center! I m sure he won t mind the help! Blackbeard Sailing Club, New Bern, NC!9

BSC Pet Committee Report Doggie Swimming Lessons by larry Sorenson On July 4 th at 10:00 am we met at the boat ramp to do our doggie swimming lesson. The instructor was Wave Chaser (Bichon Fries) assisted by Larry. We had two not so eager students which had some swimming skills. One dog was "Rugby" owned by Ian and Katherine Prince. The other dog was a Scottie named Burgee," owned by Jim Fortuna. After a couple of laps around the pool, both had improved their swimming skills. They then put their life jackets on and floated around to enjoy the warm water. It was a great day for this activity, with both warm water and comfortable air temperature. I would like to do this again in late August or September. All can improve their skills and just have fun. I am still interested in input from the membership about sea stories of pets underway or just enjoying BSC. BSC members please send me pictures of your pet enjoying a sail and/or a BSC experience. Be a responsible and considerate pet owner while you and your pets are at BSC. Larry Blackbeard Sailing Club, New Bern, NC!10
