At last count, almost 20 vessels have signed up for all or a portion of the trip! If you are interested, contact the Cruising Committee Chairs, Jim and Jody Fortuna at or jimfortuna@gmail.com. The Boy Scouts are coming back! This year they will be at BSC the weekend of the Clark Cup Regatta June 19 th. The older scouts will be on a 10-week bike trip across the country. (Yes, country not county.) Talk about saddle sores! The younger scouts will be at BSC and will help us properly retire Old Glory. If you have an American flag that needs to be retired, bring it to the Club before June 18 th. The Membership Committee will hold a new member orientation this summer. If you haven t had the opportunity to attend an orientation recently, you would be surprised at the thoroughness and attention to Club detail! The orientation is open to any member who would like a refresher on all things BSC. There is no test afterwards. Watch for more details from the Membership Committee. We welcome back inactive members Mike and Sarah Afflerbach as Active Members. The Afflerbach family is excited about the Junior Sailing program and will be active participants! In addition, we welcome a new Legacy Member former BSC member Rudy Wagner! Our waste water easement was approved by the Fairfield Harbor POA. Research on the necessary permits is currently underway, with a recommendation to the Board on a system and cost estimate expected shortly. As with property owners everywhere, BSC was hit with a hefty tax revaluation. We have sent a letter of appeal to the Craven County Tax Assessor, requesting relief on land value and slips. The Finance Committee will soon begin work on the 2011 Club budget. Our budget process and timeline is outlined below Budget Development Timeline June: Confirm 2010 actual figures and make adjustments as appropriate. July: Prepare draft budget for August: Present draft budget to BOD. September: BOD approves draft budget for presentation to the membership. October: Consider comments from the membership and draft final budget. November: BOD adopts 2011 budget. Lu-Ann C. Perryman The next Board meeting will be June 4 at 7:30 pm in the clubhouse. Members are encouraged to attend. Need to Report a Water Quality Violation? The following information for members wishing to report water quality violations was provided by Michelle Moorman. For the Neuse River / New Bern area, call Jason Green at or For the Raleigh area, call Martin Richmond at For additional information, please visit the NC Department of Environment and Natural resources, Division of Water Quality website at

New Bern s Fireworks are planned for Sunday the 4 th at Union Point. Members of Blackbeard Sailing Club are invited to sail to the Bridgeton Harbor Marina on Saturday or Sunday to watch the fireworks. Slips are being reserved now. You must make your own reservation by contacting Tom Wynn at Bridgeton Harbor Marina The special July 4 th rate will be $45 for both Saturday and Sunday nights; leaving Monday. George Nauman BSC Dogs Committee Arrgh... Woof! There will be an open meeting of the BSC Dogs Committee to seek the membership s input on our dog policy. This meeting will be held at 2:00 P.M. on May 30, 2010 in the clubhouse. The purpose of the BSC Dogs Committee is to make recommendations to the board of directors concerning relevant polices. The committee has had one meeting to start its planning and now the committee needs the recommendations and suggestions from the membership. At the May 30th meeting, there will be a demonstration of dog obedience training, and AKC s Canine Good Citizen Test (CGC). The major topic will be the AKC-CGC program requirements and dog training in general. The AKC-CGC is an entry-level standard for good and acceptable behavior for dogs in society. Dog-related items and products that could be used to make life easier for dogs and owners at BSC will be on display. All dog-related improvements at the club will be implemented as self-help projects and will be funded from the training class income and individual member donations. I would again like to assure everyone that the committee s objective is to protect the enjoyable atmosphere at BSC for all members, while keeping in mind that for many members, dogs are part of their family. I have volunteered to teach dog training classes. The first CGC class will start on June 12, 2010 at 10:00 am, just outside the BSC gate. The course will last for five weeks. These classes will focus on good behavior and basic obedience Come, Heel, Sit, Down, and Stay. The last class will be the actual AKC-CGC test. Dogs that pass this test will receive an AKC-CGC award. The class fee is $ You may sign up at the May 30th meeting, by contacting me or on the first day of the class. Early sign up for the class is encouraged to ensure a place in the class. If you are unable to attend the May 30th meeting, please share your ideas and concerns with the BSC Dogs Committee members Pete Moore, Ken Gurganus or Larry Sorenson. Larry Sorenson llsoren@earthlink.net Property Tax Revaluation Impacts BSC Members who are Craven County residents, already know that 2010 is a tax revaluation year and have received a notice of new value from the Assessor s Office. It looks like the county-wide average increase is about 31% but BSC has been hit exceptionally hard. The value of our land went up 30% but our buildings and docks went up a whopping 85%. BSC s assessed value went from $1,445,190 to $2,420,201 an increase of 67%. We have checked other marinas in the area and have found that the increase is consistent for buildings and docks, but not for land. Your board of directors has submitted a letter of appeal to the Tax Assessor stating the reasons we feel our assessment is too high. Board members Dave Whitney and Ken Laws attended an informational meeting held by County Officials. Perry Morris, County Board Chairman, stated that the county was looking at a rate decrease from $.61 to $.48 (per $100) for the July tax bill. Even with the rate decrease, which is not assured, our bill would go from approximately $8,800 to $11,600 an increase of $2,800 per year. The BOD will continue to follow this issue and attempt to bring our assessment down as much as possible. 3 Race News Team Blackbeard Flags the ECB Cup On a wonderful weekend for sailing, PHRF teams from Oriental Dinghy Club, NYRA and Blackbeard competed closely in three very tight races, and Team Blackbeard prevailed for only the second time in eight years! Saturday saw lots of sail changes as the breeze started out brisk, died down somewhat, then came back strong. On Compass Rose, we began with the #2 but peeled to the #1 during the first race. Then between races we changed back to the #2 for the rest of the day. Two races Saturday were decided by one second or less and many were under a minute in hourlong contests. Sunday morning the air was lighter and full sail was the order of the day, although it really piped up after we finished. In the Cruising Class, Arch Altman in Julie won all three races, with ODC coming in second, and BSC s Bill Starr third in Patience. Great job Arch and congratulations on your first ICRC flag trophy. In the =>240 Class, four SJ 21s competed, one with spinnaker and three without. Team Blackbeard s Hans Lassen took second overall after losing a heartbreaker race by less than one second (corrected) to Mike Evans. Hans won the second race, but came in second in the third, so Mike took first overall. Congratulations, Hans. In Non-Spinnaker, Compass Rose won all three A division races with ODC boats coming in second and third. In the B division, Dave Whitney in Silent Pursuit aced the first race but took two subsequent thirds. When the divisions were combined for ICRC scoring, Compass Rose was still first and Dave took third. In Spinnaker A, Eddy Parker won all three races in Brown Eyed Girl. In Spin B, Charlie Nelson s Water Phantom took second. When the divisions were combined, Eddy dropped to second and Charlie to fourth on corrected times. Team Blackbeard flag winners were Arch Altman (1), Mark Brennesholtz (1), Hans Lassen (2), Eddy Parker (2), Dave Whitney (3 tie), and Bill Starr (3 tie), for a total of 9 points. ODC was second in ICRC scoring with 14 points, and NYRA was third with 16. Full scoring details, including Team scores, are available on Many thanks to the Race Committee, especially Ken Gurganus who kind of pulled the regatta together on fairly short notice, and to Richard Schott for scrounging, running, cleaning up, and returning a chase boat. Team Blackbeard s next goal is the Hancock Regatta in July (see below). We re not satisfied with just taking one ICRC regatta we want the whole season trophy that has resided in Oriental for way too long. June, July & August Racing Events May 29 & 30 is the NC Offshore Championship in Beaufort. Clare Lynn Brock says it will happen. Contact her at or clbrock@embarqmail.com June 12 & 13 is the Ensign Class Regional Championship in Oriental. Several BSC sailors plan to participate. NOR is posted on June 19 is the Boy Scout Clark Cup Regatta here at Blackbeard. Volunteer PHRF boats will take out Scouts for informal racing. Contact Ken Gurganus at or kgurganus@suddenlink.net. May 2010 Page 3 June 25 & 26 is the First Citizens Cup overnight long distance race. A full moon (hopefully) race down the Neuse and back. Contact Mike Harrison at or mkharrison@suddenlink.net. July 8 to 11 is the SJ 21 Eastern Nationals on Lake Carlisle, IL. July 10 & 11 is the first time Hancock YC will host an ICRC Team Regatta. Because of the warm hospitality the Marines have always provided this has been a popular event. Now it s also a Team Regatta, so Team Blackbeard will reassemble to try to seal our lock on the annual ICRC trophy. Watch for the NOR soon. July 24 is the NYRA Parrothead a single race down river to Oriental that is pretty casual. On board partying and free foul rum punch is the reward for the survivors. August 7 & 8 is the Dragon s Breath ICRC Regatta in Oriental. This is the final and possibly decisive Team event of the year. Once again unto the breach Put it on your calendar now if it isn t already there. ODC turns out in force on their home turf. August 28 & 29 is the Blackbeard Regatta for one designs, including San Juans and Ensigns. And guess where it s held? Right! Mark Brennesholtz Close maneuvering before the start of the Non-Spin B boats at the ECB Cup Team Race. Team Blackbeard took home the ICRC Trophy Flags for the first time in many years. From left, Joe Valinoti (ODC) in Il Gato, Dave Whitney (BSC) in Silent Pursuit, and Art Tierney (ODC) in Quixotic. 4 May 2010 Page 4 Safe Boating Week Proclaimed May Ducks in the Bilge Or more accurately, Baby Ducks in the Bilge. Don t remember anything in Nigel Calder s books about the proper procedure on how to handle this condition, let alone the safe removal of such critters. Perhaps it ll be in a revised edition But let s back up and analyze just how this happened in the first place. Seems like this is the time of year when duck eggs magically turn out baby ducks. Our very own naturalists, Carl & Wanda Sandele, carefully nurtured a setting hen that steadfastly refused to move, to the point of open warfare, in the cockpit of their boat. Suing for peace, but yet fearing any ducklings that hatched, if any, might fall down the nearby vent shaft, Wanda carefully stuffed a rag in the vent shaft opening. Ah, said the mother duck, Bedding, and promptly added the stuffed rag to her nest while Wanda wasn t looking. Nor did Wanda notice the missing rag on subsequent visits. On one later visit, Wanda observed the mother duck in the water behind the boat, calling loudly Wanda could hear a faint peeping from inside her boat. Checking the nest, Wanda noticed the missing rag, the open vent and a couple of eggshells in the nest. Tracing the peeping she finally located one of the wayward creatures in the bilge and gently floated the baby over the stern to the wa i t i n g m o m wh o promptly swam away with chick in tow. But, now for the other one unfortunately when mom went away and stopped calling, the remaining chick stoped peeping also. So it was down in the bilge, with Carl removing boards and various gear, then Wanda crawling into spaces way too small even for Wanda s petite size, until the wayward baby was finally cornered and gently placed into custody. (Do they make baby duck handcuffs?) With the duck mom nowhere in sight, our brave rescuers started down the dock to shore with the baby duck peeping loudly. (Maybe the handcuffs were too tight?). From the yard next door the momma duck came rushing forward quacking loudly. Fearing a rumble with mom, Wanda quickly passed the baby to Carl who promptly floated the baby to the water nearby and reunited mom and baby. Not sure what the future holds for mom and the two chicks but at least they were given a chance by our own brave duo of Carl & Wanda. The babies were observed in the water on Sunday between A & C Docks, avoiding moving boats. Another exciting day in the life of Blackbeard Sailing Club. Ken Gurganus

5 May 2010 Page 5 New Bern Remembers the War Years Many members enjoyed New Bern s Civil War reenactment on May 8th. The event featured a naval bombardment staged in the Neuse off Union Point. These great photos of the boats participating in the event were taken by Judy Hills. Prospective New Members The following individuals have applied for membership in Blackbeard Sailing Club. If any member wishes to provide input, they may contact Ken Caviston at or kcaviston@suddenlink.net. Brett A. Parkhurst and his wife Rita Brodegard, of New Bern. Ken Caviston Memorial Week Cruise The time is fast approaching for the Memorial Week Cruise. This event promises to do BSC s namesake proud. With 19 boats expected to participate, our plundering armada plans to lay siege to shrimp at Ocracoke, go to the Lost Colony play at Manteo (OK, that s not very pirate-like), drain kegs in Oriental, and generally have a blast. Anyone needing more information should contact Jim Fortuna at or jimfortuna@gmail.com. Arrgh!!
