Although the cause of the fire is unknown at this time, it would be a good time for all to double check their onboard systems. Let s do all we can to prevent a fire on our docks. For the story, go to: Congratulations to our racers in the NYRA Invitational held at Bridgeton Harbor earlier this month. In Saturday s race, our Board member Doug Longhini was 2 nd in Cruising and Vice Commodore Dave Whitney was bested by Mark Brennesholtz on Compass Rose in the Non Spin A. At least Whitney redeemed himself on the Board by winning the final race on Sunday. C mon guys, work with me Read about our BSC racers in Mark Brennesholtz s column. Congratulations to all BSC racers! Check out Cruising News Jim and Jody Fortuna have taken on the task of promoting and organizing trips for cruisers. I anticipate lots of great fun on the water with these four (Jib and Burgee are the crew). As the weather warms up, we can all take advantage of their hard work and stop making excuses and get on the water! Thanks Jim, Jody, Jib and Burgee for making cruising at BSC a little bit easier. BSC received a request from Boy Scout Troop 845 to visit BSC again on May Bill Jarvis and Dan Bornarth have agreed to help in giving the Scouts an overview of sailing basics. BSC members will again be enlisted to take the Scouts sailing. This year, the Scouts want to give back to BSC. They have asked for a Club project they can complete as a thank you. The Pirate Queen Dock Challenge is set for Saturday June 27 th! In the next few weeks, watch the website and the Club bulletin board for rules and details. Get your mojo going, A Dock is coming at you! Remember the silly games kids used to play? Dodge ball, snipe hunting and when we got older, Quarters? Well, just like the kids that used to see how many people could get in a VW Beetle or phone booth, BSC has come up with our own version. How many people does it take to launch a Hunter? See the photo on page 2 the final count was dog. Congratulations to new member Anne Taylor on the successful launch (albeit a loooonnnggg launch) at the Club recently! Club members Susanne Pendleton and Leigh Pfefferkorn have proposed once-a-month Friday musical get-togethers on the deck at the club house as the weather warms up. Bring your guitar, harmonica, spoons or kazoo. The Pirate Queen will not play an instrument or sing I promise. Stay tuned for details as we kick this off in June! Have you just completed a great boat project? New cushions? New cabin sole? Want to show her off? How about a Boat Open House? Most of us share an addiction to boats and love nothing more than to step aboard someone else s boat for ideas. On May 16 th, dust her off, wash her down and invite your fellow BSC members on board for a peek. Some of us may even give you a taste of the boat s signature drink (doesn t have to be an adult beverage). Let s get to know one another and our vessels better! Watch for details on the club house bulletin board and the website! The May Board meeting has been moved to May 8. Same time: 7:30 pm. Lu-Ann C. Perryman Life's pretty good, and why wouldn't it be? I'm a pirate, after all.

2 Page 2 BSC Board Notes Important Issues & News from the BSC Board of Directors By Dave Whitney The Pirate Queen had an excused absence at the April board meeting so the Clown Prince filled in. Important Issues: Pilings We have a number of suspect pilings which need to be evaluated before scheduling replacement. These pilings are 30+ years old. Bill Braun agreed to contact a member who has expertise in doing this type work. Drain Field Problems Two plumbers worked most of one day clearing our drain field. They felt that we would be ok from now on, if we do periodic maintenance on our septic tanks. Liability Levels for Insurance Our insurance audit raised several questions about liability levels for both members and vendors. More information is being gathered by Archer Watkins. Fire Alarm We have hardware, but the company we were using went broke. Jon Petersen is investigating if/how we can use our current hardware. WIFI Jon Petersen, backed up by several club members, made a presentation on the system they set up on workday. The board agreed to accept the proposal which involved a generous contribution by Jon. The system will be funded by money obtained by selling the old copper wire from B/C dock. Club House Electrical Service This work is scheduled for the first week of April and will be handled with minimum downtime. May Board Meeting The next Board meeting was rescheduled to May 8, due to a conflict with the ECB Cup. How Many Jelly Beans in the Jar? BSC has its own version of this game, How many people does it take to launch a Hunter? The final count is 18 plus a dog. Congratulations to new member Anne Taylor on her successful launch at the Club recently!

3 Blackbeard s May 9 th Cruising Event Our first mini cruise is coming up on May 9 th and 10 th with a rain date on the following weekend. We plan to raft up in New Bern late in the morning on the 9 th, followed by a simple pot luck lunch with items served on each boat. After socializing and telling sea stories, we will anchor and go into town for dinner at a local, reasonably priced restaurant. Details will be posted in the clubhouse and communicated via . In anticipation of the super summer to come, decorating your boat in a Margaritaville theme is highly encouraged. Bring your musical instruments if you play something. This will be a joint event with our friends at the Triangle Sailing Association in Raleigh/Durham, many of whom are also BSC members. We will have awards for the most interesting lunch item, and most spirited decorations. Since we will be going boat to boat, please wear non-marking deck shoes, and have 4 or more fenders. And if you have a dinghy, please bring it to help shuttle people to and from dinner. Please RSVP by 5/5 to jimfortuna@hotmail.com or call Jim Fortuna at so that we can get a head count for the restaurant. Send me your or phone number if you would like to be updated on this and future Blackbeard cruising events. Don t forget to post your cruising plans on the white board in the club house and to invite fellow Blackbearders to join you. It will make your trip even more fun. Happy sailing! Jim & Jody Fortuna Notice to All Skippers on A and C Docks... by Jim & Jody Fortuna It has come to our notice that our beloved Commodore made some prejudicial and inaccurate comments in the last edition of the Epitaph. Therefore, we wanted to correct what appear to be delusions on the part of the honorable Ms. Perryman. In the beginning there was A Dock. The powers that be looked around and said, "Hmmm, we can do better than this!!" Thus B Dock was built, and again our forefathers said, "Hmmm, we still can do better." Thus C Dock was created and FINALLY they got it right! Let the fight begin. Ready the cannon! One, two, three... Jim/Joni Floyd C 21 (Salty) Bermuda Bound Crew Needed! Page 3 We re Bermuda bound on board Vital Spark, our Caliber 40! We expect to be leaving on/about June 1 st or 2 nd and returning on/about June 14 th or 15 th. We are looking for crew interested in sailing out and back with us in this time frame. There are two of us at present and we are looking for one or two more. Anyone interested should contact me at (919) (home) or (919) (cell). Ritchie Thomson Carolina Currents At our April 4 th social, Rob Lucey gave a very interesting presentation on Carolina Currents The Boating and Waterfront Magazine. Thank-you for sharing, Rob. Everyone had a great time! Please take a few moments to visit the Carolina Currents website at or pick up a copy of this very interesting magazine!

4 Page 4 Race News A Rose Between Thorns NYRA Invitational This past weekend was absolutely lovely for a regatta, coming after storms late last week and storms again on Monday. Sponsor Bridgeton Harbor Marina sported a new clubhouse facility that made last year look like a Boy Scout field trip. Power and water on the dock, big deck, and new locker facilities plus a big screen TV to show the Carolina game. Doesn t get much better. And, of course, the sausage, hot dog, burger cookout put on by the Bridgeton Butcher Shop was a winner again. Oh, and the wind was right for sailing, pretty much both days. Saturday was a distance race for PHRF classes, starting in the visible vicinity of Union Point, New Bern, and traveling either 12 or 24 miles (Spinnaker A) to a finish back near Union Point. The New Bern Sun Journal had a photographer on site and cars were seen to stop atop the high rise bridge to watch the spinnaker sets (no chutes allowed above the bridge). The wind was 15 to 20 with the expected flukey shifts around the bridge and a ways down river. The return beat through the bridge in the shifty air made for a tactical final lap. Saturday s winners were Branin Thorn s Aarrgh by less than a minute corrected over Chuck Thompson s Packer Tacker in the >200 Non-Spin class. Aquilla edged the Longhini/Pitcavage Catalina 30 H2O in Cruising. Compass Rose got by Dave Whitney s Silent Pursuit in Non-Spin A. Doug King in Blue Yonder won in Spin B, and Dean Forbis won Spin A in Echo. Sunday saw a postponement to await wind, which arrived in delightful fashion after half an hour. This time races were off Broad Creek around marks, and the RC ran two good contests. Brown Eyed Girl bested Echo in the final race but still ended up second in Spin A for the regatta. Blue Yonder hung on against Rambunctious in Spin B to take first in that class. Compass Rose gave up the final race to Silent Pursuit but managed to hold onto first for the regatta May, June & July Events by Mark Brennesholtz Lawrence Miller's Tanzer Sails Call finishes the distance race Saturday afternoon off Union Point in New Bern. Bill and Tinka Talbert's Proud Mary was RC boat, although they raced aboard Brown Eyed Girl. (photo Brennesholtz) May 2 & 3 is the East Carolina Bank Cup at Blackbeard. The ECB is a round the marks race for all PHRF boats 21 or over. It is also an ICRC Team regatta, so we expect a big contingent from Oriental Dinghy Club and NYRA. We need to get as many BSC boats on the line in as many classes as possible to win our flags. Contact Ken Gurganus at or kgurganus@suddenlink.net. The NOR is posted on and May 22 & 23 is the North Carolina Offshore Championship (NCOC) in the ocean off Beaufort. This race attracts boats from Bald Head Island, Wilmington, and Wrightsville Beach as well as the Neuse/Pamlico. Shore activities will be at the NC Maritime Museum s Gallants Channel Annex with free dockage for participants. Contact Lee King at or lrk30470@yahoo.com. June 5/6 is the overnight First Citizens Cup race out of Blackbeard. It will probably start Friday evening, race down to the mouth of the Neuse, and finish at BSC Saturday morning, depending on wind, of course. Contact Mike Harrison at or mkharrison@suddenlink.net. June is the San Juan 21 Eastern Nationals here in New Bern for a change. Contact Mike Harrison. Branin Thorn in his Catalina 22 Aarrgh is seconds behind Chuck Thompson's SJ21 Packer Tacker at the New Bern finish after 12 miles. Branin won corrected, and had three firsts to win his class in the NYRA Invitational. (photo Brennesholtz) in Non-Spin A. Aarrgh captured all three races and won Non-Spin B decisively, but in very close racing. And H20 was second overall in Cruising, followed by Lawrence Miller in Sails Call. Mark June 20 is the Indian Island to Ocracoke Race sponsored by Pamlico Sailing Club. It s a low key point-to-point race and a lot of fun. Contact Greg Miller at or gmiller53@suddenlink.net. July 11 & 12 is the Hancock Regatta at Cherry Point. Always free dockage, lots of food and great hospitality. Contact Scott Shermeyer at or scott@carolinacomputercare.com. July 25 is NYRA s Parrothead race, a casual sail down the Neuse to Oriental and on board party afterward. Contact Charlie Nelson at or cenelson@aol.com.
