From the Commodore Elec/ons are coming up along with the annual mee/ng. I urge everyone to vote and abend the mee/ng on November 1, This is your chance to hear what is going on and to give your input on how things are going and what direc/on the club should be taking in the next year. The slate of offi- cers running for 2015 is Commodore, Bill Green; Vice- Commodore, Ed Doughty; Directors, you vote for two (Mark Brennesholtz, Eddie Parker and Gay Whitney); Secretary, Jan Green; and Treasurer, Richard SchoB On Sept 27 we had Mini Workday, which turn out to be a great success. The idea was to hold this to work on projects that might interfere with normal ac/vi/es around the club. In this case, replacing sid- ing on the main building and pain/ng the parking lot side. We will be holding another one a^er the regular workday to replace the water heaters in the Blackbeard Sailing Club, New Bern, NC! con$nued next page 1

Look to the re- cent blast on what is needed. are looking at, I would leave it alone and call someone who can ID it and take appropriate ac/on. Thank you Eddy for removing this uninvited visitor. Snakes alive we had a visitor. This past week Eddy Parker killed a copperhead in the parking lot. Although this is not that unusual, it is also not that common. On the whole, only one snake out of 10 is a poisons vari- ety and most help keep down pest. Here in Raleigh I have dealt with two copperheads but over a 22 year /me frame. 3 NEWS - EVENTS - ANNOUNCEMENTS BOARD APPROVES NEW MEMBERSHIP PROCEDURE At the August BOD meeting, a revamp of the Member- ship Procedure was approved. The old system was put in when the Club had a waiting list. That condition no longer exists, and a streamlined system has been de- veloped to get applicants approved in a more timely basis. The new system still requires two sponsors, as required by the by- laws. However, the Nomination form will no longer be required. The essential informa- tion from the Nomination form has been included on the new Application form. The sponsors sign the Ap- plication, certifying that the basic information about the club has been explained. This information in also listed on the Application form. In addition, new appli- cants names/addresses will be submitted to the mem- bership at large by blast. The members at large have 10 days to notify a Board member of any ques- tions about the applicants. The new procedure is being added to the BSC Website, as well as the new Application form. Please review this, access them there, and contact a Board member, if you have any questions. The two notices on this page were printed in the August Edition, but are certainly important enough Slow sown, you move too fast If you re anywhere close to my age, then you know the 59th St. Bridge Song by artists Simon and Garfunkel. In casie you are not of a certain age, the opening lyrics go, Slow down, you move too fast. You got to make the morning last. Just kicking down the cobble stones. Looking for fun and feelin' groovy. I think I can say that for most of us, Blackbeard Sailing Club evokes this kind of mood. But nothing can kill that mood faster than a vehicle speeding close by, raising a cloud of dust and raising a racket. And of course, there s the danger to children, adults and pets who might move out from between the parked cars or dry-stored boats. So please, consider BSC a No Wake Zone and slow down way down when you enter the gate. Blackbeard Sailing Club, New Bern, NC! 3

6 BSC Dog Commi*ee Report Epitaph October 2014 The Holidays are Coming! Many people try to buy pets as Christmas gihs for children or other family members. Most breeders do not recommend this. You should be prepared to give a new pet your undivided anen$on, and that is rarely possible during the busy holiday season. A bener idea is to give pet- related gihs - toys, leashes, grooming tools - and then bring your pet home when all the excitement has died down. Holiday and Christmas decora$on can be very interes$ng to your pets. Pets being curious they want to play with or inquire in- depth about the tree and other new decora$ons. Pet proof the holiday home and provide plenty of toys. PoinseTa and mistletoe are toxic to pets. A list of toxic and poison holiday plants can be found at hnp:// health/your- dogs- health/caring- for- your- dog/are- holiday- plants- toxic- to.html BSC members please send me pictures of your pet enjoying a sail boating and/ or a BSC experience. 8 Steady Wind in Singular Solo by Mark Brennesholtz The ODC- sponsored Solo (and Double- Handed) Race in Oriental on October 4th was a Goldilocks event. Not too hot, not too cold, no rain, not too much wind just right. The 10.7 mile bowtie shaped course fea- tured an initial close reach down to Adams Creek, a reach/run past Garbacon, another close reach to a club mark, and [inally a long beat to the [inish. Com- pass Rose [inished the course in just under two hours, and most legs were over six knots boat speed. Wonderful day! Nineteen boats competed, including three from Blackbeard. Mark Hittner raced his Mor- gan 24/25 Pesty, Lee King raced his Sabre Cloud Nine, and Compass Rose was there, too. In his [irst Solo, Mark Hittner sailed very fast, set and gybed the whisker pole on the runs, and gener- ally did everything right enough to win the whole Racing News and Info Blackbeard's Mark Hittner crosses the finish line first in the Solo Race in Oriental. Pesty is their Morgan 24/ 25 and is obviously quick in a breeze. It was a perfect day for racing (Luhrs photo event. His conquests included the infamous Henry Frazer in the Etchells, the trimaran, and the double- handed Bristol Great racing, Mark. Compass Rose was second in class and seventh overall, and Lee was also mid- [leet but second in class. FYI for next year, boats are allowed to double- hand if the combined crew age is 150 or more. First Citizens Cup 1: Who Needs Wind The Oriental Cup charity regatta drew only one Blackbeard boat, but Tinka Talbert and Clare Lynn Brock won both races in gusty conditions. Totally, 25 competitors raced and San Juan 21 Squirrels on the Highway took [irst in class. A fun video can be found at &feature=youtu.be. committee did a great job of getting two races off in shifty and light conditions, opting for a let s just get Blackbeard Sailing Club, New Bern, NC! 8
9 Fall Racing Events October 25: the NYRA Halloween Regatta - Dou- bling as the [irst date in the Winter Series, the NYRA Halloween Regatta can be entered as a stand- alone regatta or as part of the whole series. The NOR is posted now on Regattanetwork.org, or nyra.org. A Halloween Party will follow at BSC and costumes are encouraged. Some of the homelier skippers will look better in costume (forgive the editorial license). November 8: The second WS race date - Remaining race dates are November 22, December 13, and January 17 & 31. November 15: the Fleet 8 SJ 21 Turkey Trot - The NOR, further postings to follow, is a fun one- dayer that normally gets a dozen SJs. Contact Doug Longhini at or ncsailor47@yahoo.com. December 13: see above for NYRA Winter Series. Blackbeard Sailing Club, New Bern, NC! 9
10 FHYC / BSC RACING COMBINATIONS Many BSC members, myself included, are also members of FHYC. As the FHYC RegaBa Captain I would like to invite all BSC members to take advantage of the racing opportuni/es provided by FHYC. By following the link on the BSC website you can get all the informa/on you need on the following list of races open to the public. - Spring and Fall Dinghy Series (mostly Sunfish) on Sunday anernoons - Spring and fall Ensign racing on Thursday anernoons - Tuesday night fun races held from April through October - The Oar Race RegaPa on August 30 Below is a descrip/on of our Tuesday Night Fun Racing that may be of interest to some of you. Tuesday races have been used as a way of genng new members on the water and introduced to racing, as coaching opportuni/es, crew prac/ce sessions, husband and wife ou/ngs among the Ensign fleet members and just plain laid- back social events. If you are going to sail on a weeknight make it a Tuesday night. Tuesday FUN Racing Returns - Spring 2014 Tuesday night racing is meant to be fun and informal. By Informal we mean: No Captains mee@ng No commipee boat No scoring No protests No spinnakers No awards No shou@ng No star@ng line NO FEES (no kidding) Novices are encouraged to come out and sharpen their skills! Boat owners do not need to be members of any sailing club, yacht club, or racing associa/on. However, a waiver of liability, which is available on the FHYC website is re- quired to be signed by the boat owner. As always, captains are individually responsible for their own ac/ons and any damage caused. Schedule Races are scheduled each Tuesday from April 8 through October 21. We plan on having a social a^er the first race of each month. It will be at the tables outside at NW Creek Marina. Blackbeard Sailing Club, New Bern, NC! 10
11 Courses On most days, the course will be from 1N to #17 and back. If the wind is stronger, we may suggest twice around. Descrip/ons of three other courses will be sent to par/cipants. A pursuit start will be used for all races with the first start /me at 1700 (5:00 PM). Boats without a PHRF ra/ng will be assigned a club ra/ng and start /mes will be sent to each compe/tor. A pursuit start means that your star/ng /me is computed ahead of /me based upon your handicap and the course to be sailed. The slower boats start before the faster boats and theore/cally everyone finishes at the same /me. Therefore, the first boat across the finish line wins. We will use VHF- 69 to announce the course, make any changes and give a 10- minute /me check at You are expected to pass 1N, the start/finish marker within 100. You may pass it on either side, but remember it is a naviga/on marker and if at the start or finish you pass it on the wrong side you do so at your own risk. Weather If the weather is ques/onable before any race there will be an sent to all registrants no later than 1300 (1 PM) Tuesday a^ernoon. There will be no racing if there are thunderstorms in the area or if sustained winds at 1300 are over 20 MPH. Note it is possible that at 1300 it will be clear and at 1700 thunderstorms will be in the area. If you hear thunder you know we are not racing. Registra/on for the regaba is at hbp:// Ques/ons can be directed to Eddy Parker at eparker@aicpa.org. Blackbeard Sailing Club, New Bern, NC! 11
12 ICRC Team Racing Rules 2014 The Inter-Club Racing Committee (ICRC) has had the stated goal since 2000 of encouraging PHRF sailboat racing in the Neuse and Pamlico Rivers. Since 2002 it has promoted team racing of the individual clubs at several open regattas each year including at one time the Hospice Regatta (PSC), Hancock Creek Regatta (HCYC), East Carolina Bank Regatta (BSC) and the Dragon s Breath (ODC). In recent years, there has been dissatisfaction with the ICRC scoring and the rules were updated for 2014 to hopefully reinvigorate the competition. 1. There shall be only three classes for ICRC purposes: spinnaker, non-spinnaker and cruising. There can be divisions within each class at the discretion of the organizing authority (OA). Scoring for ICRC purposes will be based on division finishes using high point average system. 2. Each division may have a separate start at the discretion of the PRO. Different divisions may run a different course. The Organizing Authority (OA) should strive to keep the divisions as close to equal in size as possible. 3. To qualify as a team, a club must have at least 5 boats entered. Club affiliation must be determined prior to the start of the first race. 4. The team score will consist of the highest 5 scores based on the High Point Average Scoring System. 5. If there is more than one ICRC team event during the year, the overall team score is the sum of the best two team scores from the individual ICRC events. 6. The team with the highest overall score will win the team trophy for the year. Blackbeard Sailing Club, New Bern, NC! 12
13 7. Nothing in these rules for this series shall change how the individual OAs score their events in this series, how the classes are split into divisions such as spin A, spin B, non-spin A, non-spin B, etc., except as noted in paragraph 1. and 2. above. Further, the ICRC recommends that all OAs consider the following for all open events: 1. PHRF divisions should be kept as narrow as possible to promote exciting racing. In the past, PHRF ranges of less than about 100 and between about 100 and about 200 have worked reasonably well. The ICRC realizes that these ranges may have to be adjusted depending on the boats entered. 2. All OAs are encouraged to require that every boat entered in the event has a current NC-PHRF rating certificate. A provisional NC-PHRF certificate might be available at late registration if a representative is available. 3. OAs are encouraged to assist visiting skippers with free or reduced dockage at the racing venue. 4. RULES GOVERNING CRUISING CLASS BOATS FOR ICRC RACES 4.1 ICRC recognizes the need to make accommodation for boat owners who may not wish to maintain their boat at the performance level implied by a standard NC-PHRF certificate. These boats are welcome to race in CRUISING CLASS. Therefore, the following guidelines are issued for those boats. 4.2 No boats specifically designed for racing are allowed. 4.3 Only Dacron sails are allowed. No spinnakers are allowed. 4.4 Powered winches are allowed. 4.5 To qualify as a team member an NC-PHRF rating for that particular boat must be issued. 4.6 Two of the four following additional Cruising Class requirements will be met, based on the statements of the boat owner at the time of registration. a.windlass or pulpit mounted anchor b.dodger/bimini in place c.the youngest sail to be 5 years old or older d.bottom paint 3 years old or older Blackbeard Sailing Club, New Bern, NC! 13
14 RULES GOVERNING ICRC SAILOR OF THE YEAR AWARD The ICRC, in an effort to further promote local sailboat racing, instituted a ICRC Sailor of the Year Award in This award is given to the boat with the best high point average (HPA) score attained from her four best scores in any of the following regattas:! NYRA Invitational!! New Bern!! ECB Cup!!! New Bern! NCOC Offshore!! Beaufort! Leukemia Cup Regatta! River Dunes! Ocracoke Race!! Indian Island! Hancock Creek Regatta! Cherry Point! Dragon s Breath!! Oriental! Oar Race!!! New Bern! Michelob Cup!! Oriental The winner of the award in 2012 and 2013 was Henry Frazer of the Oriental Dinghy Club. Congratulations to Henry for his success in 2012 and Given his skill in sailboat racing, it is a good bet that he will continue with his winning ways as long as he competes! In an effort to encourage other racers to compete, the ICRC has decided to restrict the eligibility for the award to a racer who has not won it the previous year. Thus beginning with the 2014 racing season, the award will be given to the racer with the highest HPA score who qualifies and did not win the award the previous year. 16 Early Fall Marine Growth Report End of summer cleanings bring some bad news off the Neuse. For years, heavy marine growth on the Trent have been restricted to the mouth of the Neuse. Late last summer some of this unique growth of what we ve called spongy moss, along with thickly clustering river mussels was seen as spotty growth in Northwest Creek. This August, that growth attacked with vigor within Broad Creek clogging thru-hulls and intakes in all vessel where paint was not effectively painted up inside. Clusters of river mussels have closed in all spaces between the shaft and the top of its tunnel and rudder spaces. Such growth is known to burn out AC units in New Bern with spongy moss slowing water intake. Cleanings in early August took half the time that cleanings on the same vessels required in mid September. If your vessel is heading out and you have not been cleaning in the last month, you may likely not be going far without overheating your engine. But temperature have shifted, so growth has slowed down even as barnacles continue to grow. - Kirk Hathaway EPITAPH Submission Guideline Please submit: stories and cruising articles how-to s and news committee reports racing news and reports photos in kb event announcements and calendars updated officer and board listings Note the change in submissions: Submit materials by the 15th of Each Month for that month s publication. 17 REMINDER: MAJOR CHANGE IN REQUIREMENTS FOR HURRICANE EVACUATION! The BOD has approved a change in the re- quirements for boats vaca/ng wet slips during a Hurricane. All boats, 27 or longer, are s/ll required to leave the Harbor. Boats under 27 have the op/on of remaining. The ra/onale is that the lighter boats do not have as much poten/al to do damage. This will relieve some of the conges/on in the Creek, and give more room for the big- ger boats to anchor. The exact wording fol- lows. Boats under that length will be removed on a trailer, if one is available. The owners of remaining boats have the op/on of removing their boat, remaining in their slip, or moving to a slip that will provide greater security. All canvas will be stripped and each boat will be /ed securely. Owners of boats remaining are s/ll responsible for any damage to club property Members who own boats that are required to vacate the harbor in advance of a storm, and who are unable or refuse to will be assessed a fee of $15.00 per foot of boat length. In addi/on, those members will be responsible for the cost to determine if damage has occurred to the Club s docks or facili/es as a result of their boats remaining in the harbor and for the cost to repair all damage.
