On June 11th our Squadron mates will be doing VSC s at the Navy Rec Center and the West Basin Marina during their National Marina Day. P/C Hal Willard, SN, and I joined our County Commissioners recently to proclaim National Safe Boating Week for St. Mary s County. The cruise to Herrington Harbour South was attended by Lt Jim Brueggemann, JN, and family, with rain coming in on Sunday and Monday. Our next MD State Boating Course is set to begin on 4 June at the Naval Air Museum. SEO Lt/C Daniel Cordell, AP, and Assistant SEO Hal Willard will be driving the course. Unfortunately we had to cancel our SSSS/FF due to weather but will make it up during the month of August. Upcoming events we need to be aware of and participate in are the Cobb Island Kickoff to Summer and the Tilghman Island Seafood Festival. See you at our next meeting! That s all for now... 2 P a g e 2 True Readings Executive Officer s Report Lt/C Bob Killius, AP Community Outreach I had an opportunity to talk about United States Power Squadrons and boating safety last month at the Mount Olivet United Methodist Church in Lusby. As part of Safe Boating Week, they asked if we could come and talk to their community about the importance of life jackets. As you can see in the photo below, I took along a variety of personal flotation devices and a collection of brochures about our organization, our squadron, and topics on safe boating practices. As a result, the pastor s husband is interested in attending our next Boat MD safety course to earn his training certificate. Coming up later this month is the Summer Rendezvous of the Chesapeake Hunter Sailors group, which will be hosted by Spring Cove Marina and the Calvert Marine Museum. They have asked PRSPS to provide both Vessel Safety Checks and our famous Flare and Fire Extinguisher training for their group. I have attached a copy of their event schedule, so if you can t make it to Tilghman Island for the Seafood Festival, consider participating in these events right here in Solomons. Our Vessel Safety Examiners have been busy and will continue to support events like this and work down the list of boaters who signed up at previous events. As always, we want to serve our membership so if you haven t had your VSC yet this year, contact me or any of our examiners and we will get it done! Thanks again to all of you that represent our squadron at events all the way from Florida to New Jersey. Your active involvement is what keeps our squadron energized, informed and represented at numerous venues. Keep up the great work. 3 J U N E P a g e 3 Administrative Officer s Report by Lt/C Pat Farrar, AP May 2016 should go down in history as the month that wasn t. While boaters should be used to a little rain, May was just a little over the top. We started the month about 3 inches below our normal rainfall, but I have to believe we completed May with a surplus of a few inches. In other words, May will not go down in my history book as a memorable month. I am looking forward to June. It can t be any worse. Okay, let s take a quick look at our accomplishments in May: First up was our monthly dinner meeting that was planned for the 12th. However, since the annual SSSS was planned for the 14th, the Bridge elected to cancel the dinner meeting. Next up was the annual Squadron Spring Safety Seminar (SSSS), scheduled for the 14th. This year the SSSS was planned to be combined with the FFFF (Fall Fish Fry Festival). Those looking at the forecast would have bet their bottom dollar that the world would have been coming to an end on the 14th. With the forecast in hand, the Bridge elected to postpone the annual event to the following weekend. So much for the forecast. As it turned out, the day of the 14th would have been a wonderful time to hold the SSSS. That is, if you were to omit the time between 1800 and During which the heavens opened up with a glorious downpour. Well, it is always best to play it safe. Let s fast forward to the weekend of the 21st. As you might already guess, the weekend was not planned to be that sunny event that we had hoped for. The 2nd try at scheduling the SSSS was again forecasted to be a rainy non-event kind of day. So, the 21st will go down in history as yet another wet day that helped mark the month of May as having 25 out of 31 rain soaked days. Three events planned and 3 events cancelled pretty well sums up the month of May. On the bright side, we did have a Memorial day weekend cruise to Herrington Harbor South. On the down side 2 of the 3 planned boats had to cancel at the last moment. See Lt Jim Brueggemann, JN s, article regarding the cruise. Looking at the what s planned for June and beyond, we have the following events planned: Up first is the June 9th monthly dinner meeting to be held at Solomons Kingfishers restaurant. Dinner starts at 1730 (5:30PM), we will have a discussion regarding Smartphone applications that aid boaters. Lt/C Pat Farrar, AP, will lead the discussion. If you have a favorite App, please come prepared to share that App with the members. A short Business meeting will follow. Looking a bit down the road, we have two cruises planned. Up first is the annual Cobb Island Welcome to Summer cruise/party to be held on 18 to 20 June. The second is the Tighlman Island Seafood Festival to be held on 24 through 26 June. More info to follow next month. Think you are good at trailering your boat? I saw a guy going down route 301 who could trailer a boat already on a trailer! Photo by Bob Killius
4 P a g e 4 True Readings Educational Officer s Report Lt/C Daniel Cordell, AP Our CYC MD Boat course is complete! Thanks to P/C Hall Willard, SN, Lt/C Pat Farrar, AP, Lt Chuck Latyak,P, Lt/C Bob Killius, and Cdr Bob Blevins for support in the CYC MD Boating Course. I think it was a great success. We graduated 9 students and another 2 that couldn t make day 2 of class took the test online and passed after the first day of teaching. This was a good turnout from CYC members and their friends. Another big thanks to P/Cs Barbara and Mike Walter for helping get this going and to CYC for hosting and especially for providing lunch to keep us local and time efficient! I would like to add that I made some big updates to the flow of the course, and this time around not only did everyone pass without hesitation, I don t think anyone got more than 5 questions wrong! Though this class was a bit more seasoned boaters, we look forward to the same improved results in future offerings. Further, we stayed on time/ ahead for pretty much the entire course and were very happy with that. We are having our next MD boating course at the PAX Air Museum June 4 and 11. I cannot make the first day so I hope we can have a few folks there to help out. We have a few signed up for this already as well as a few others who couldn t make CYC we expect. It should be another great class. This will wrap up our immediate education for the summer months aside from one possibility in Charles County. Jim Dawson has indicated he may have up to 20 students interested in taking the MD Boating Course. With that size he could use our help so we will be working out the logistics and timing for getting to Charles for a course sometime this summer or fall. Thanks! Photos by Lt Jim Brueggemann, JN
5 J U N E P a g e 5 Boating Activities Report Lt Jim Brueggemann, JN Well, great weekend; great weather, smooth seas; great time. One boat set out, one boat returned. Herrington Harbour had lots to offer, pool opened on Saturday, beach was open with lots of family and kid fun on the kayaks and paddleboards. My daughters, their husband / boyfriend and my grandchildren joined us on Saturday for fun in the sun. Aubrie (granddaughter), crewed with Penny on the way up the Chesapeake on Friday and spent the rest of the day on the beach; and was Penny s date for an evening of dining and music by the pool. Did I mention - the pool, beach, bar, marina and restaurant were outstanding, accommodations top notch. Great place to celebrate Memorial Day boats were decorated and flags were flying. Lots of great people, and Aubrie introduced herself to most of them. Quote of the weekend: Aubrie meets a young female adult in the water at Photos by Lt Jim Brueggemann, JN the beach; Aubrie looks up and asks the question Do you have a kid? Young adult responds, no; Aubrie why not? Young adult is a bit stunned by the question and replies do you have a kid? Aubrie responds I AM a kid! Young adult retreats to the shore belly laughing. Penny went over to offer apologies for whatever transpired and was provided with that exchange of questions. Aubrie, she s funny, she expects all adults to have a kid, that means more for her to meet and play with. So all reading this summary: you have been forewarned, better show up with a kid!

10 Safety Officer s Report P/C Don Kilpatrick, SN From BoatUS electronics editor Lenny Rudow, here's more about using your VHF the right way: in an emergency, your broadcast needs to be more structured. With the radio tuned to Channel 16 and the power set to high, begin your broadcast by stating either "Mayday" or "Pan-pan" three times over. Mayday is used when you're in a life-threatening situation. Pan -pan is the appropriate call to make when you're in a bad situation that isn't life threatening at the moment but could become life threatening. Next, state your vessel's name, latitude and longitude, a brief description of your boat, and the nature of your emergency. Speak slowly and clearly, and wait for a response from the Coast Guard. Once the Coast Guard knows the exact situation and location, be ready for some follow-up questions. You're likely to be asked about such things as the size and type of the boat you're on, the number and age of the people on board, and whether anyone has any medical training, if it's applicable to the situation. Listen to make sure that the channel is clear before transmitting. Even if you don't get an answer, continue making the emergency broadcast with those first three vital bits of information. The authorities (or perhaps a nearby pleasure boater) may be listening, even if you can't hear them calling back. Usually the best way to make sure your vital info gets through with no confusion or mistakes is to ensure that you have digital selective calling (DSC) active on your radio. This requires a Maritime Mobile Service Identity (MMSI) number and a link to your GPS, unless you've got a newer VHF with a built-in GPS. When you press the DSC "panic button" on the VHF, the radio will automatically transmit your vessel information and exact location. And since it's digitally processed and uses narrow receiver bandwidth, it also boosts range over normal voice communications. Think of VHF communications like the highways and byways of our nation. They're public, everyone uses them, and everyone benefits. TRUE READINGS PATUXENT RIVER SAIL AND POWER SQUADRON PO BOX 173 LEXINGTON PARK, MD 20653
