2 Commander s Message Cdr Carl Nyman JN cdr@manatee-squadron.org "Boating is fun.. We'll show you how". Wow! Another great fun boating adventure is now another stellar part of our history. The Week-Away cruise southward this year, ending up at Fisherman s Village was great fun for all. We went as far south as Pink Shell Marina on the northern tip of Estero Island. A boatload of thanks goes out to the G-8, from all of us who enjoyed the cruise. The G-8 cruise planners and leaders provided Port Captains for logistics, themes for fun events and cruise coordination to keep all of us in order (?). Thank you all: D/C Myles Gee SN, Lt Kathy Gee S, P/C Larry Beverage AP, Lt Yvonne Beverage P, Lt Chuck Whelan AP, Lt Juliette Whelan S, P/Lt/C Judy Martorana P and of course, recent P/C Gary Mink P. More details and pictures of the fun can be found in this issue. The big events just keep coming. We have a festival to participate in this first weekend of November. We are ready for this but can always use more representation. The Taste of Manatee will be in Palmetto November 1 and 2 stop by or help out. Soon after this on Nov 14, we host the D-22 C & R at Little Harbor. The activity agenda is set for a smooth, fun event. Menus and venues are planned and hopefully all will be in order to the approval of our own District Commander. Many reservations are already coming in and we anticipate a fun event with great turnout. Please contact a Bridge member or P/C Charlie Brunner SN if you have questions or wish to volunteer your assistance. If there are any last minute donated items for gift baskets to be raffled at the C & R, please contact P/C Nadine Cornell S or a Bridge member. 3 Executive Department Lt/C Tom Brown P xo@manatee-squadron.org At THANKSGIVING we are especially grateful for all the volunteers who help make this squadron the success it is. Our hat is off in honor of each of YOU! We thank you! I am sure that those of you who participated in the annual long (12 day) cruise known as the A- Week-Away discovered that some of us believe one day on the water is worth at least three days on the land. I also hope you followed Facebook postings that were put up along the journey so that if you did not make the trip, you could see and feel how much fun MSPS has. Fun is infectious and makes life more enjoyable for all. Please check out the photos in this newsletter. What s next? We need your help to keep the fun alive. Please sign up to help. Taste of Manatee A premier food festival with music, games, and arts & crafts. It all starts Saturday 01 Nov 14 at 1100 thru 2200 and resumes again the next day Sunday 02 Nov thru MSPS has been a part of this fun for years. Our booth is staffed with members who share what we do with the public, especially the education opportunities. This is where many of our ABC class students are recruited. Our ABC sign-up sheet for the public to enroll is always full of names at the end of the day. COMICON is coming! Nov 14 Ruskin, FL. See Flyer inside newsletter. Christmas activities begin soon--- Christmas Tree Sales, Parties, Boat Decorating and Boat Parades. The Boys and Girls Club of Manatee County has agreed to let our squadron help their tree sales operation on Thursday 04 Dec 14. This community service work is for a great cause and we all have fun getting customers into the lot, selecting trees, and loading the trees in or on their vehicles. As of now, I have not yet seen a customer pick up a tree on their motorcycle, but anything is possible. MSPS volunteers sometimes wear Santa hats or Elf attire in an effort to attract the public into the tree farm. It s all good clean fun! Hey! Did you know that P/C Ed Cornell P and his team completed over 100 vessel safety inspections this year? Thank you Ed! Great job! And what about all those boat launch ramp efforts P/C Nadene Cornell S also completed! It may be time to consider a contest to see if the Northern ramps or Southern ramps can produce more ABC students. Just watch a boat launch ramp early in the season and you will know what I mean. There are ABC candidates just waiting to be trained. Yes! Remember that we have a buddy system for a reason it could also save your life. Life Jackets Save Lives I am wearing MINE. Where is YOURS? Page 3

(Due to the Earth s rotation) Here in Bradenton we are cooking along at 930 MPH As you go north, the speed slows down! So what about at the North Pole? There you are going 0 MPH. But! You rotate 360 in 24 hours! I would rather be at the Equator blasting along at over a 1000 MPH, not to mention it s a lot warmer! Page 5

7 Boat Christenings Cdr Carl Nyman JN christened Bucket List (Debra & Ron Hartwell) and ClasSica (Kim & Bob Provencher) at Pink Shell Marina during the October 2014 A-Week-Way Boating Activity. As you may notice in the pictures, the wooden paddles we usually use were not to be found anywhere. Our creative leaders improvised with smaller paddles for the occasion. Bucket List ClasSica Happy Anniversary 50 Years Diana & Carl Nyman While the Champaign flowed, D/C Gee SN toasted Carl and Diana on their 50-year wedding anniversary. 20 Boating quotes Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover. - Mark Twain I must go down to the sea again, to the lonely sea and the sky. And all I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by. - John Masefield "The ocean has always been a salve to my soul...the best thing for a cut or abrasion was to go swimming in salt water. Later down the road of life, I made the discovery that salt water was also good for the mental abrasions one inevitably acquires on land."
