2 Commander s Message Cdr Matt Braatz, AP cdr@manatee-squadron.org Come for the Boating Education...Stay for the Friends. Another month has rolled around, and it seems hard to believe that it is August already. We had a great trip to the Treasure Island Club this year with fantastic weather, good food and great companionship with our fellow boaters. We presented Anne, the dock master at the Club, with a Certificate of Appreciation, which was well received by her. We were able to help her out with the incoming squadron boats and with a very small floating platform that got stuck under one of the docks. Good time by all. For those of you who may not have heard, Lt Lynne Gieges, S had fallen and broken her hip. She had a partial hip replacement then went to a rehab center. She is now home recuperating. Lynne does a fantastic job on our Helm Station, and we can all be proud of the quality of our monthly newsletter. Speaking for the squadron, we all wish her well and a speedy recovery. She could also use some help on the Helm Station in the coming months. Sandi and I were able to go on a C & R with Galati Yachts, being invited by Kerry Alexander, to South Seas. We left a number of days after returning from Treasure Island traveling via ICW, since the weather was bad in the Gulf. Of the five boats that traveled together, one of them needed to have the bridges open to get thru, which made for a longer transit trip. Nice group of people, but we have more fun activities with the Manatee Sail and Power Squadron! In August there is the national meeting in Minneapolis. Some us will be attending, and I will give you a report on this next month. Summer will close in September, and it will be fun to hear what other people did on their vacations. Have a safe boating month in August! See you at the next GMM in September. The Helm Station A publication of the Manatee Sail & Power Squadron, a unit of the United States Power Squadrons. 6 13-15 Jul 2018~~Treasure Island Weekend July Event The Bay was smooth and the crossing easy as our flotilla made its way to The Club Treasure Island. The Thursday arrivals included 1 st Choice, Beverages Aboard, Eisvogel, Sunshine OMS and Hafa Adai. Friday saw the arrival of Calypso, Can t Take it With You!, My Maui, Nana Papa III, and Spicy. Three items were on our agenda for Friday, welcoming the newest member of our flotilla, presenting a certificate of appreciation to Dockmaster Anne Picozzi, and the Club TI seafood buffet. The Christening ceremony, conducted by P/C Charlie Brunner, SN, renamed and brought MV Can t Take it With You! to King Neptune s attention and into our squadron s boating family. Our Commander awarded the Dockmaster a letter of appreciation for working so hard to set up this event, get all our boats in (slips are getting harder to come by), and getting 32 of us into the seafood buffet. The seafood buffet was excellent as usual, the only issue this time was how to accommodate our large group without blocking out their regular membership. The solution was splitting us into two groups of 16, one seating at 1730 and the other at Our port captain conducted a highly efficient lottery to determine the early and late group and everyone had an excellent seafood experience. A tot of toasted coconut rum dockside was a first-rate way to close out the day. Saturday was a pool and socialize day with no planned activities other than our traditional docktails. The club had an eight-piece band scheduled for that evening as a member appreciation event which many of us enjoyed. The return on Sunday was smooth and uneventful, a great day on the water and a fun weekend at The Club Treasure Island. 8 Off the Beaten Path 21 Jul 2018~~Riverside Reef and Grill July Event Twenty-two members of the Fun Squadron dined overlooking the Manatee River at the Riverside Reef & Grill for the July C & R. A good time was had by all, with the highlight of the event being the surprise arrival of none other than our Helm Station editor, Lt Lynne Gieges, S. Lynne is recovering from hip surgery, the result of falling a couple of weeks ago. Despite the trials and tribulations, the Helm Station rolls on with Lynne in the lead amazing!! Thanks to Lt Monique Gutierrez,S for making all the arrangements for this event. Page 8

10 And Even More Upcoming Event Information Little Harbor C & R Aug 2018 For this cruise we have fewer boats than anticipated. This results in a positive effect since we are all now to be located on dock B. The previous proposed slips were to be on the floating docks in the larger basin near the High & Dry storage. This was based on an expected greater number of larger boats. The B dock is in front of the condominium structure where we had been previously, but to the south end of the condominium. The events will follow a normal schedule with Friday evening docktails. Dinner will be on your own. Morning weather discussions will be held around 1000 rain or shine. Saturday events will be, pool, Sunset Grill, pool and docktails. Dinner will be on your own. Some boaters expressed a desire to arrive on Thursday 16 Aug This should be no problem but please inform me early as I will meet with the marina staff again and detail those arrivals. This cruise will be with a Rendezvous lunch event at Sunset Grill as we have done in previous years. Lt Monique Gutierrez, S will be keeping a list and coordinating with Sunset Grill. Please contact Monique (941) if you have not signed up previously. For menu and more information, the website is The address is 602 Bahia Del Sol Ruskin, FL This should be another fun event. See you there! PC Carl Nyman, JN (813) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Saturday, 18 Aug 2018 SUNSET GRILL 611 Destiny Drive Ruskin, Fl Lunch at 1130 Let's drive up and join the boaters for lunch at Sunset Grill on the water. They also have a great outside TIKI bar! If you are boating you can tell Carl Nyman or contact Monique to be added to the reservation. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Hi All A quick announcement that I will be conducting a Marine Communications Systems class starting in September. 11 Boating Activities The Fall GetAway Cruise will be here before you know it. It kicks off with our first stop at Legacy Harbor on 22 Oct 2018 and ends with our last stop at Marina Jacks on 31 Oct For those planning to participate in the District C & R we will be travelling from Marina Jacks to Little Harbor for two days, 01 & 02 Nov If you have not signed up for the Fall GetAway please see the sign-up sheet at the June General Membership meeting. It is important to get an indication of participation now, so we can finalize marina reservations. As a reminder, members are invited to participate in the Fall GetAway by car and meeting the boaters at the respective destinations. Each Marina has appropriate rooms next or near to it that can be rented by the day allowing you to participate in all activities. Get ready for the 2019 Boating Season. We have a special event planned that should entice every member to participate. It is called The Great Key West C & R. Yes, that s right. We are in the preliminary planning stages for a Squadron C & R at Key West in the spring of next year. It will compose boaters who wish to take their boats, RVers who wish to camp out, day trippers who wish to drive down and rent a room for the duration, and even perhaps those who wish to trailer their boat and participate in the Squadron activities. So now is the time to think about next year and to plan your participation in this once in a lifetime Squadron C & R. We will have a sign-up sheet at the June membership meeting to get an indication of the level of interest for each category. So, if this appeals to your adventurous nature, please sign up at the meeting to give us an indication of potential participation as we move along the planning process. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Changes?? Please, if you have changes to your phone number, , residence address, etc., submit those differences to the These changes will be forwarded to the appropriate people to update the directories and databases. 21 Moving by setting out an anchorfun definitions from Captain Bucko s Nauti-Words Handbook by Roger Paul Huff! Eight Bells and All is Well~~The ship s bell was struck for each half-hour of a watch. Since most (but not all) watches were four hours in length, an announcement of, Eight bells and all is well! meant that such a watch had been completed and conditions aboard were normal. Fairlead~~This refers to a vessel s rigging hardware, that is used to control, or to change, the direction taken by a line. Main Masts, and lateen-rigged on their after masts. They were popular warships for both England and Spain during the 1500 s but were also used as merchant trading vessels. Galleons were narrower than Carracks, and also more maneuverable. Hail From~~These days this phrase typically used to fact to refer to a person s hometown, but it evolved from the fact that sailing vessels often hailed each other when passing. After a vessel announced her homeport, she was said to hail from there. Idlers~~This was the name given crew members that worked during the days, and were excused (idle) from standing watches during the night. Many have specific nicknames like: Chips for a ship s carpenter, Boats for a boatswain, Blackie for a blacksmith, Coop for a cooper (who made casks), Sails for a sail-maker, The Doctor for the ship s cook and Soups for a cook s assistant. The are others, but that s enough for now. for now. Jack Nastyface~~This is the nickname that is sometimes given to an unpopular crewmember. Kedge~~This term is used for (1) moving by setting out an anchor then pulling the vessel toward it by hauling on the anchor rode, and (2) a type of small auxiliary anchor. Labor~~This nautical term is used to describe when a vessel pitches, rolls, or otherwise struggles while underway in heavy seas. In this case, deep breathing might not help that much. Main Deck~~This is the term that is used to denote the uppermost complete deck of a vessel. Nautical Mile~~This unit of distance is roughly 6076 feet, or about statute miles. Oakum~~This was the name used for tarred fibers made from old and condemned ropes that had been picked apart. Oakum was often used to caulk the seams of early wooden vessels. Packing Gland~~This does not have anything to do with irregular body functions, but is a nautical term for the fitting where a vessel s propeller shaft and/or rudderstock passes through her hull. Sometimes also called a stuffing box, it is designed both to provide lubrication and to prevent leaks. Page 21
