2 Commander s Message Cdr George Druist, SN cdr@manatee-squadron.org Come for the Boating Education...Stay for the Friends. My sincere hope is that everyone survived Hurricane Irma with no personal injury or significant property damage. Personally, we returned from refugee status to an undamaged house and boat. We have had a dearth of hurricane landings in Florida since Hurricane Wilma in Common sense will tell us that this recent hiatus will not be typical and that we should always be on our guard against hurricanes and other natural disasters. Please thank our Education Department for the superb hurricane preparation program given at our September meeting. Squadron activities are resuming. Thank you to P/Lt/C Matt Braatz, P and Lt Sandi Braatz, S and to Dean May, P and Nancy Alayon-May for putting on an excellent C & R at Riviera Dunes on 23 Sep Moving forward, our October meeting will feature our Education Department and their course offerings presented by our world class instructors. We also look forward to hearing from Larry Stults of Sarasota Baywatch. We are also anticipating a great time at the Low Country Boil on 08 Oct 2017 at the Gutierrez Beach on Anna Maria Island and the big boating event of the year, the Fall Getaway Destination Cruise, starting on 16 Oct It is not too late to plan to attend the District 22 Conference on 07 Oct You can look forward to finding out the latest from USPS National, interesting and pertinent presentations and the camaraderie of your squadron mates. See the D22 flyer in this edition of the HS. Let safe boating resume...and be forever vigilant. 3 Executive Department Lt/C Rich Maggio, S xo@manatee-squadron.org Boating is fun.. We'll show you how. Buongiorno Squadron! Whew! Well, we re all glad that s over! Debbie and I, as most of you know, had the foresight to evacuate before Irma was even on radar. We heard about her when we were driving through Tuscany. (Not highly recommended for the faint of heart!) The news of the impending destruction was quite worrisome, but, as my son so warmly said over dinner by the Pantheon in Roma, Everything that is important is right here. We sent prayers from every cathedral we visited and lit enough candles to rival those of you without electricity. We just got back last weekend, and, as it turned out for us, no structural damage, just a huge mess. Most of the squadron also did pretty well. But, if any of you are still in a tough spot, I urge you to reach out directly to any bridge member; George, Matt. Bob or myself, and we will work on getting some help your way. When I last reported to you, we were in South Carolina enjoying the total eclipse. It was fascinating, and I urge all of you to arrange to see the next one to hit North America in 2024,which will cross us from Texas to Maine. If you don't like to travel, you will be able to see a total eclipse from Florida in However, it might be a bit out of focus for many of us. (That s kind of a joke.) For multiple reasons, Second Tuesday Beach Sunset Salute, was moved to the third Tuesday this month. We had a nice crowd, eager to get away from their various cleanup projects. Next month we will resume our normal schedule, so be at Manatee Beach at the end of Manatee, at 1807, that s an hour before sunset, on 10 Oct (Dang, these days are shortening up aren t they?) Lastly, there are various beach and shore cleanups going on around our area, and we hope to get involved in one or more in the near future. Bradenton Yacht Club is sponsoring one this weekend, but there just isn't time to organize for it. One of the co-sponsors is the Sarasota BayWatch, which will be involved in a major bay cleanup, including SCUBA, kayakers, etc. on 04 Nov Their co-founder, Larry Stults, has offered to speak at our October meeting, after the education business is presented. His organization is involved in several local environmental projects, including red tide abatement, and scallop and hard clam restoration in Sarasota Bay. It is sure to be an interesting presentation. We look forward to seeing you at the meeting Tuesday, 03 Oct Page 3

4 Administration Lt/C Matt Braatz, AP What a great C & R week end we had at Riviera Dunes Marina in September! We had 6 boats come to the Marina while 4 boats were already docked there. Friday night we had our usual dock-tails (great appetizers), but after that we grilled hamburgers, hot dogs and fried chicken with all the fixings right on the dock. P/C Larry Beverage, SN did a tremendous job in cooking the food he uses a half twist rotation on the hot dogs, rather than a quarter turn. Cooked to perfection. He comes highly recommended. We had a number of people from the Marina join us for dock-tails, as they were interested in getting information regarding upcoming courses. A lot of potential new members. We had set up one of our tents on the dock with the Manatee Sail & Power Squadron banner. Great PR for the squadron. We have been asked by the Marina to train their dock personnel in the use of an AED (Automatic External Defibrillator) which would fall under our out-reach program. We have one of the AED devices. Larry Beverage will follow up on this request. By the way we are now at 176 people in the squadron. Saturday, donuts were served in the AM for the early birds with the weather discussion followed at Lunch was at the Blu Mangrove Water Front Restaurant. Some of us went swimming in the pool and others relaxed before the night s activities. At 1730 the group came over to my house via car shuttle from the Marina since it was raining. Others from the Squadron came directly here for the ceremony and dinner. After waiting for the rain to let up, it was my honor and privilege to do the christening for Dean May, P and Nancy Alayon-May s boat, especially since they are my next-door neighbor. Dinner was at my house and Sandi prepared the main course while everyone else brought a salad or dessert. We had 38 people attend. Thanks to everyone that made the christening and dinner such a great success. Again, many thanks to all including Dean May, P (co-chair for the week end), who made this such a successful and fun C & R. In October (reminder): Fall Getaway starting 16 Oct 2017 thru 23 Oct Extended Fall Getaway Oct 2017 (before) and after Oct There is detailed information from P/C Larry Beverage, SN regarding the cruise in the Helm Station. In November: Oct 2017~~ D22 C & R at Punta GordaIn December: 03 Dec 2017~~Annual Holiday Party at Bradenton Yacht Club at more information to follow. In each month going forward the Bridge wants to have a 5-minute FYI at the end of the meeting. Any topic or something of interest to the members. It could be a useful weather/navigational APP, safety item or whatever. Maybe you have a cleaning solution for canvas. So, share your knowledge or wisdom with others as we can always learn something new, rather than reinventing the wheel ourselves. Non-Nautical trivia: Watch your Ps & Qs. In the English pubs there was written on the walls...watch your pints and quarts... need we say anymore! Have a safe and great boating month. Page 4

5 Education Department Lt/C Bob Kelly, SN This month's issue is an opportunity to share with you the effects of Irma on boats and island living. We have been teaching hurricane preparedness for many years. But, this is really the first time there has been an opportunity to put the teachings to a test, and I want to share my preparations and results with you. The impact of Irma on Anna Maria was serious but not life threatening. We had a mandatory evacuation, and, if anyone stayed, I have not met them as yet. Irma knocked out all power, raised havoc with all vegetation, shredded most plants that are not native to the island and took many large trees down which in turn took out power and communication lines along with their utility poles. Three days after the storm residents were allowed back on the island, although there was no power. Visually Anna Maria looked like a war zone!! I couldn't drive on my street due to down trees - big trees - which did take out power and communication for a week. So how did my boat fair in all the devastation? First, the preparation for a possible Cat 3 hurricane: 1) The boat was prepared at my dock as no hurricane hole was available that was any better for a 42' trawler. 2) Removed all canvas. 3) Double tied dingy to the trawler and removed drain plug. 4) Taped all hatches, windows, and doors. 5) Insured all bilge pumps were operational. 6) Set four anchors on starboard side (25-35# each) with anchor lines ranging out 150' to 200' from boat. 7) Reset anchors three times as the winds increased to 35mph. 8) I moved the boat out 6-8' from dock on port side and angled the bow to northeast, where I expected the strongest winds and where there was minimum protection. 9) Doubled all dock lines and tied high to allow for storm surge. Results: 1) Lost one of four GPS/VHF antennas (my fault because I didn't lay them down and secure them). 2) I got wet swimming out to the boat; no power to launch second dingy. 3) With the exception of debris all over the boat, she was exactly where I left her; she hadn't moved an inch! Of course, Irma was a Cat 1 not a Cat 3 when she made her presence felt on Anna Maria, but still it validates principles taught in Hurricane Preparedness. It works!!! I took two full days to prepare. I also helped many neighbors secure their boats, all on lifts. All survived with minor damage from flying debris. The basic methodology was tie boat to lift cradle, tie cradle to lift pilings, and pull the drain plug. I hope all others fared as well. Last month s language quiz: 1) "Shake a leg" Today the meaning is to hurry up, I am waiting on you; originally the term meant to dance. 2) Turning a blind eye" We use this term when we want to ignore something but it came from the Battle of Copenhagen in 1801 when Admiral Lord Nelson deliberately put his telescope to his blind eye so he couldn't see a signal from his commander to stop the attack (he won the battle)! Next months mind challenges: 1) "Feeling blue" 2) Posh Page 5
