1 BROAD REACH APRIL Baie d Urfé Yacht Club A MESSAGE FROM OUR COMMODORE CHRIS ATACK Docks In is just around the corner, and so far water levels are normal. If all goes well, we should start the 2018 season right on schedule fingers crossed! As usual, we have a lot planned for 2018, including weeknight and Saturday races for novices and experts alike. New racers are always welcome, and our veteran racers are more than happy to coach sailors who are new to the sport. If you would like to know more about our racing program and how to participate, please contact our Sailing Master George Bennet at bdyc-sailingmaster@bdyc.com. We also have a full calendar of social events including the very popular Saturday Night Family Barbeques. SAFETY FIRST Docks in and Boats in are two days when there is a lot going on. It is also a period when you are greeting club members whom you haven t seen for months. Between the mechanical loader and the big crane there is a potential for danger if you are not paying attention. The riggers are busy watching the loads being moved so please stay well away so as not to distract them. If you get yelled at it is for your own safety. Please pay attention. If you are working near the water either with docks or boats, wear a life jacket. The club has some, but you will probably be more comfortable if you bring your own. Our Social Director Patricia McMullen would like to hear from members who want to host Saturday Night barbeques or assist with major social events. If you would like to help out, please contact her at bdyc-socialdirector@bdyc.com for further details. BDYC is also a place where sailors of every age meet. We re especially happy to provide training for the next generation of sailors through our Junior Squadron Sailing School in July and August. Whether young sailors want to learn sailing basics or get coaching in advanced racing skills, the Junior Squadron has something to offer. If you are looking for summer activities for children or grandchildren, please The water is far too cold in the spring to take chances. If you are working with the loader crew or the crane crew then wear a hard hat. The club has hard hats available. No, we are not going to drop anything on you, at least not intentionally. A swinging strap or hook probably doesn t look too dangerous, but if it hits you unexpectedly it can knock you silly. Another classic is standing up after preparing a boat to lift and hitting your head on a motor or boat ladder. Wear the hat. Never, Ever, let any part of your body get between a raised load and the ground! You may not, under any circumstances, scurry consider signing them up for the Junior Squadron. It s a great learning experience and lots of fun. In 2018, please join in! Whether you are new to BDYC or a longtime member who has been too busy to attend club functions recently, you are more than welcome! We urge you to come out for the Commodore s Sail Past, take part in a race or two (or more!) and enjoy a Saturday night dinner overlooking the lake. BDYC is a more than a club, it is a community, and like any community it thrives when members get involved. 2 BROAD REACH APRIL Baie d Urfé Yacht Club NOTICES AND REMINDERS DON LEWIS Blazer Crests are back in stock The Club Blazer crest is back in stock. This year we managed to get a slightly larger version that is about 9 x 6 cm. There are two types of backing. One is the traditional flat sew-on, the other has a pin on backing with three pins. For those who like the idea of portability, but can t bear the idea of pinholes, consider getting the sew on model and using name badge magnets to attach to your garment. Remarkably, the price has not increased, so they are still available for $20.00 each. BDYC Septic tank Please remember that the yacht club functions with a septic tank, and not a public sewer. It is important not to flush anything that could clog the pipes or that will not quickly degrade organically. The system was severely stressed last year by flooding so we want to be gentle with it. Do not empty chemical toilets into the club toilets and flush. The chemicals that eliminate odors in portable toilets are pure poison to the bacteria that make our septic tank function. Likewise, do not flush any kind of oil, gas, solvent, or bilge sludge. It is all toxic. The only things that belong in the septic tank are the products of your digestive system. Boat Preparation Toxic Waste Anti-fouling paint is toxic to marine growth, and just about anything else. That s fine as long as it is attached to your boat where it belongs. When you scrape and sand off the remains of last year s paint it becomes toxic waste. It is against the law to let it get into the environment. That includes letting the dust sink into the ground around your boat in the spring. Use drop cloths to catch the paint dust. If you are you are using a power sander be sure that you are not spraying the resultant dust into the air so it can settle on the ground or onto other boats. On a windy day you might need to drape your boat to keep the dust from escaping. Once you have finished applying the new paint to your boat, dump the accumulated toxic dust and applicators into an empty paint can and dispose of it at an Eco-Centre. Even the empty paint can is considered to be contaminated and does not belong in a landfill with regular garbage. Lock the Club House Lots of members have keys to the lower clubhouse to access the lockers and toilets when there is no staff. If you use your key to open up, then it is your responsibility to lock up, or pass the obligation on to someone else who is also using the clubhouse. Even if you didn t unlock the clubhouse, if you seem to be the last person around please check that the place is locked before you leave the grounds. 3 BROAD REACH APRIL Baie d Urfé Yacht Club A WORD FROM OUR SOCIAL DIRECTOR PATRICIA MCMULLEN I don't know about the rest of you but I am really anxious to get this season off to a good start and hope that there are no delays! I am hoping we are able to have a full normal schedule of events. You will find the schedule for this season attached to this edition of the Broad Reach. I have also updated the website and will have printouts available in the clubhouse during docks in and boats in. There will be a small change with the social committee this year as Lynda Atack will be stepping back from regular social activities although she will still be around to help out on some of the bigger events. Although I say a small change this does not describe the help and support that Lynda had provided to the social scene the past two years. I want to give a public thanks to Lynda for all her efforts. That being said, Fiona Evans and Susan Murphy are carrying on with the committee to my great relief. We could still use another regular member of the social committee so if anyone out there would like to join us I would really appreciate it! Honestly, I don t work you too hard! You can contact me via or talk to me during docks and boats in. As usual we kick off events with the docks in on 28 April and we will be preparing chili, corn bread, salad and desserts in addition to having snacks available throughout the day. This meal is free to all the members who come out and volunteer to help the club kick into gear for the season. I will prepare more jalapeno corn bread as that proved to be very popular when I made it for the Turkey shoot. I am also adding hot chocolate to be available for docks in. Boats in on 5 May will be lasagna, garlic bread, salad and dessert. This will be available for the nominal fee of $5.00! The regular Saturday evening events will kick off on 12 May with the New Members Potluck. We have several new members this year so let s all show up to welcome them to the club! The following Saturday will be the start of the Family BBQs. For those that don't know how it works just show up on a Saturday evening BBQ along with something to throw on the BBQ, the beverage of your choice and $5.00 and you get a wide choice of sides and desserts. No reservation is necessary, just come and enjoy a delightful evening with your fellow club members. Family and friends are welcomed. Other special events throughout the summer require a reservation but I will always send out s concerning those. Speaking of the Family BBQs I have the whole season available: May 19, 26 June 09, 16, 30 July 07, 21 August 04, 11 (corn roast), 18 September 01, 08, 22, 29 (or this might be the Oyster party) October 13 (or this might be the Oyster Party) If you would like to host a BBQ this summer especially early in the season please contact me at chezbasson@gmail.com Can't wait to see everyone again!

5 BROAD REACH APRIL Baie d Urfé Yacht Club A WORD FROM OUR HARBOUR MASTER STEPHEN GRUBER It was a case of make hay while the sun shines or rather build docks before the next snow storm this Friday the 13 th. Despite having to change the date of the first Dock Building Day pretty much at the last minute due to the forecast for freezing temperatures and snow, the club still had a good turnout for what was be the first of two work days of breaking up the old docks and building eight new ones. Nearly 20 volunteers were able to make it despite it being a weekday and had a very productive time as shown below. Big thanks to everyone who made it out to help complete all eight docks. Also, remember the following: Eight Docks were broken up, Docks in Day: all members required to help: Saturday April 28 th at 0900hrs Boats in Day: Saturday May 5 th. First boat in at 0700 hrs. Check the launch list and to see if you are on duty on the club website or on the notice board at the club. The wood was sawn for all the new eight docks, There have been some changes to the slip assignments. Please consult the document in your e- mails. By the end of the day 3 docks and one dock frame were completed!

6 BROAD REACH APRIL 2018 Baie d Urfé Yacht Club ALL THERE IS TO KNOW ABOUT RACING Following a shortened racing season last year it is a pleasure to introduce our full racing season for 2018! Please consult the racing calendar joined in back. WHAT IS SYLVRA AND WHY IS IT IMPORTANT? byjames Hogg SLVYRA stands for St Lawrence Valley Yacht Racing Association and is an umbrella organisation of yacht clubs mainly along the shores of the Lac St Louis and the Lake of Two Mountains. BDYC is a member of SLVYRA. that raced the same course. SLVYRA - coordinates the racing among these yacht clubs. SLVYRA maintains a racing calendar on their website which provides information on the events throughout the region. - provides handicaps needed to race different boats against each other, - coordinates the racing marks (those yellow buoys with black numerals - such as 19, 20, etc.- in the Lake of Two Mountains it may also be Letters) that are frequently used in our club racing, - sponsors big events in the area such as the Beaurepaire-Baie d Urfe Regatta (Ishkoodah), the Pas de Deux Race or other Open Races', - supports and coordinate youth sailing and racing in the region. Please feel invited to look at the website and participate actively in the events offered throughout the year. Participation is fun and a great way to meet other sailors from other clubs in the area. WHAT IS A HANDICAP? by James Hogg A handicap in sailing is used to make different boats racing together comparable. It has nothing to do with perceived or real handicaps of skipper or crew, but it fairly adjusts the speed potential of different boats sailed with equal skill. Many assumptions go into a handicap and consequently it is good, but never perfect - e.g. handicaps of different boats may be favourable or unfavourable in light winds vs strong winds vs others. Handicaps across very different boat types such as dinghies vs. catamarans vs. keelboats have little meaning as the boat types are too different to be compared meaningfully together. There are well known international rating systems for one-design boats such as the Portsmouth system (PN) where handicaps are re-calculated every year based on regatta returns and statistical analysis. Handicaps are multiplied with the elapsed time to calculate a corrected time that is then comparable to the other boats For racing at BDYC we are using the SLVYRA handicaps which can be found on A keelboat that is not one-design needs to be measured - primarily its sails - to have a handicap established for that specific set of sails. Should you just show up and race, a preliminary handicap will be used. The process of measurement is interesting and not painful. Most dinghies and catamarans can find their onedesign handicaps on the list of rated dinghies or catamarans. Should you have any questions on your boat s handicap, establishing a handicap for your boat or other matters relating to handicaps, please approach the BDYC Sailing Master or one of the Handicappers for more information.

11 MEET THE STAFF Hello, my name is Élisabeth and I am the Manager! During the year, I am a 3rd year student of Health Sciences and Genetics at the University of Ottawa. The staff is made up of me and the wonderful team of bosuns below. You will probably see us around the club in our navy shirts. One of us is usually on duty! The bosuns and I are here to keep the club in top shape and to help you with anything you need. Don t hesitate to ask for help or to let us know if something needs our attention!
