1 THE DOOR Scuttlebutt Newsletter America s Boating Club of Door County United States Power Squadrons Vol. XIIl, Issue 2 Feb ruary 2019 In This Issue COMMANDER S MESSAGE Commander s Message 1-2 Cruise Planning Meeting Information 2 From your Education Officer. 3-4 Annual Meeting & Change of Watch Calendar of Events.. 5 February Birthdays...6 The visual on the right side of this page was my opening slide at our 2015 Change of Watch: It s all about members. This couldn t be truer today, as evidenced by the following slide that District Commander Dave Fine, presented at our Commander s GoToMeeting last month. Yes: Our Little Squadron that Could grew over 36% in Thanks go out to all our new members for joining; and to all the members who encouraged and facilitated their joining. As soon as we get beyond the winter and the snow birds return, it will be time for Coffee with the Commander. We might not qualify as a little squadron much longer. We currently are 4 th in membership in District 10, behind the 2 Goliaths: Minnetonka (256) and Duluth (233) and nearly tie with St Paul (77vs75). I ll be picking up our Growth Award in Orlando at the USPS Annual Meeting, 21 February. WAY TO GO!

2 COMMANDERS MESSAGE (continued) Your Team-LIR is hard at work assembling our presentation for Learning in Retirement. Following is the listing as it appears in the Door County LIR 2019 Spring Course Catalog. We are attempting to get the bulk of this done before I leave for the Annual Meeting 15 February. I return from Florida about a week before the presentation and prefer no surprises! So; I ve been somewhat of a PITA. We have some key events coming our way in the next couple of months. USPS Annual Meeting February, Orlando, FL America s Boating Club of Door County 65th COW 17 March at Stone Harbor District 10 Spring Conference and COW April, Minneapolis Marriot West History, Mission, Objectives and Transition to America s Boating Club will be handled by Dolores and John Hermann and myself. Terry Keating is taking the lead on Cruises, with input from Sandy & Gary King and Janelle Peotter. Alan Wentworth is our WeatherMan. I started this missive a couple of evenings ago when the real temp was -22 and the wind chill was -48. It s now +12/+1; and is predicted to be in the 30s tomorrow. Go Figure! You might want to pick up the book/kindle called So Cold A Sky (Upper Michigan Weather Stories) by Karl Bohnak. Karl is the weather forecaster on WLUC-TV6 in Marquette, MI. I made friends with Karl in 09 when I brought him in, as part of an author s evening, featured at DCMM s Wooden Boat Show. He covers the Little Ice Age (LIA) in the book. And has his own spin on climate change: Good read! I ll report back next month on my take-a-ways from the Annual Meeting. Until then: Think Boating Season 19 CRUISE PLANNING MEETING AT THE KEATINGS SATURDAY 16 FEBRUARY 3756 Glidden Drive Sturgeon Bay 10 NOON COFFEE, JUICE, SWEETS Bring your good ideas for our summer cruising schedule Paddlecraft, sailboat, power cruisers big and small all are welcome Questions: Call Terry and Julie at PAGE 2

3 FROM YOUR EDUCATION OFFICER Ahoy Everyone, I am writing this month from the comfort of my home while a nasty blast of arctic air called a polar vortex is swirling outside, having closed schools for three days in a row. With this as a background, I read three articles that seem to be in conflict with each other concerning weather and climate. The first article was titled Lake Mendota has iced over twice this winter, Some say it s a warning: cold season is getting warmer. The article points out that Lake Mendota has frozen over, then opened, then refrozen this winter, which is unusual. It may be a harbinger of winters that are getting warmer. Lake ice is a sensitive measure of global warming. Throughout the 1800s to the mid 1900s the lake froze over averaging more than 100 days a year and sometimes didn t open up until early May. In ten of the winters this century, Mendota has reopened in March. The latest the lake opened since 2000 was April 12, 2014, the winter a polar vortex hit Wisconsin and Mendota was closed for 117 days. Lake ice or the lack of it, is very sensitive to global warming. Increasing days of ice-free water in Lake Mendota is a canary in the mine warning us of global warming. The second article titled, High heat, no record: th warmest year on Earth can help to understand global warming as a climate not a weather phenomenon. Scientists at Berkley Earth have calculated last year s average temperature at degrees. That s 1.39 degrees warmer than the average from 1951 to 1980 and about 2.09 degrees warmer than pre-industrial times. Pennsylvania climate scientist Michael Mann said the fact that nearly every year recently is in the top five or top ten hottest years on earth is clear evidence of human caused warming on this planet. ((continued on page 4) PAGE 3

4 FROM YOUR EDUCATION OFFICER (continued) The third article was titled, Is the polar vortex connected to climate change? A counterintuitive theory about the polar vortex is gaining ground among some in the climate science community: Regional cold air outbreaks may be getting an "assist" from global warming. While it may not seem to make sense at first glance, scientifically it's consistent with the extremes expected from climate change. Overall, Earth is warming due to climate change, but areas near the North Pole are warming more than 2 times faster than the rest of the globe. This "Arctic Amplification" is especially pronounced in winter. When warm air invades the Arctic Circle, it weakens the polar vortex, displacing cold air masses southward into Europe, Asia and the United States. You might think of it as a once tight-knit circulation unraveling, slinging pieces of cold air outward. Evidence for this was presented in a research paper published in the Journal of the American Meteorological Society. Essentially, it suggests climate change can contribute to a more extreme, wavy jet stream, hurling cold air masses farther south. It should be noted that this theory is relatively new and there is a lot of debate in the climate science community about the extent to which such a connection exists. If you would like to learn more about the difference between climate and weather and about Global warming and polar vortexes among many other things, consider taking the weather course this spring (hopefully when it is warmer). Class notes Fair Winds, Steve All of our piloting students passed the course with flying colors. Greg Campbell, Jeff Harding, and Tom Schueppert are now eligible to take Advanced Piloting which will be offered on a Thursday at the end of February. If any of you would like to refresh your skills or take the course for the first time, why not consider joining us. The course will begin in Late February on Thursday evenings. It will again be offered in the Go-To-Meeting format as Piloting was. Dan Balch, Bob DeNoto and I will again be sharing the teaching duties. PAGE 4
