2 REGISTRATION GUIDE Page 2 / 11 You are going to take part to the 15th DEFI Wind Gruissan, the biggest windsurfing gathering in the world To help us to manage as best as we can more than 1000 registration forms, You will understand that it is IMPERATIVE for you TO READ very CAREFULLY ALL the INFORMATIONS and RECOMMENDATIONS contained in this document! You must FILL IN very CAREFULLY the RISTRATION FORM attached here under, to FOLLOW PUNCTILIOUSLY the REGISTRATION PROCESS and to ATTACH ALL FILES and COMPULSERY DOCUMENTS REQUESTED. 3 REGISTRATION GUIDE Page 3 / 11 OVERVIEW The Defi Wind is a race, organized for everyone, pros and amateurs. Nevertheless you are the only one who can judge if you are able or not to run in the hard conditions you could meet here in Gruissan. To launch a race, the average wind must be over knots minimum. You have to know that the safety device has to be deployed in its entirety (50 buoys and 50 boats). So there is little chance to run the Defi Wind with a South East wind and waves! -- - Minimum age required: to have completed your 13th year on 14 May No «official» start will take place in wind < 15 knots. - Weight vest shall be strictly prohibited.. - Wearing a wetsuit is compulsory. - There are no restrictions on equipment. - Identification will be through the numbers allocated by the organization. - Discard: only 1 heat discarded for the race (from 4 heats validated). - REGISTRATIONS ARE OPEN x 1000 WINDSURFERS - ANY INCOMPLETE REGISTRATION FORM WILL NOT BE CONSIDERED. - In case of non-participation and/or cancellation, the registration fees and temporary permit fee will be not reimbursed. - SENT ONCE YOUR REGISTRATION IS CONSIDERED AS DEFINITIVE - CONFIRMATION OF REGISTRATION WILL BE NOTIFIED WITHIN 15 DAYS AFTER RECEIPT OF YOUR FILE - The bib number DEFI WIND IS SUBJECT OF A DEPOSIT. A deposit of 30 must be paid upon delivery of numbers and will be returned AT THE END OF THE DEFI WIND. IF THE RACE NUMBER IS NOT RETURNED AT THE END OF THE DEFI WIND (Sunday, May 17) the deposit will be cashed. REGISTRATION FEES It includes: Cost Management and General Organization, Official Défi Wind Tee Shirt and Luggage. Not included Fees charged by the on line registration platform Fees from temporary French Federation Sailing insurance - 28 From January 30th till April 23th, registration fees are fixed From April 24th till May 14th (depending on availability), registration fees are significantly increased (+ 100 %). On the 24th of April we have a very good visibility of the event and our needs especially in terms of nautical equipment (security boats and so on ).

4 REGISTRATION GUIDE Page 4 / 11 RULES Priority Safety Beyond the rules of priority, every rider has to do his best to avoid a collision. Good to know On the same way, the one who overtake has to deviate from the one who is overtaken. On different ways, the one who is bâbord (left hand near the mast) has to deviate from the one who is tribord (right hand near the mast). The sign in and sign out, before and after the race is compulsory You have to sign at the annotating table (the location will be specified during the first skipper meeting) before you start running. You have to sign again when you are back, even if you have given up. This system allows us to know who is back and if we have to go and look for you in the water. Caution: the no-respect of the annotating start or back brings the permanent exclusion of the Defi Wind. Of course, you have to respect all others rules of the organization too. The race One to go and return through at least 8 mile (15km). There is no maximum distance! The limit time It is the one of the last rider who wants and can finish. We will wait for him. The discards Only one discard will be retained from 4 ran races and whatever the final number of races. The start It is a rabbit start. You have to cross the line after the rabbit. The count of the starting procedure (H-60 ) is announced on the beach. The rabbit goes from the bottom line (the widest point), till the beach. The arrival It is judged by the arrival boat (a big sail boat) and a buoy just behind. You have to pass between the back of the boat and the buoy. Be careful: if your number is not visible, you won t be classifiable. Caution: if you pass the finish line without having done the entire race, you might be disqualified for all the weekend. The jury It is the king, and will do its best for everyone to have fun, for the spirit of the Defi Wind to be expressed and for you to respect it. The race area It is located between the beach and the curtain of safety buoys. It is formally forbidden to leave the race area. The safety buoys We put a curtain of buoys in the wide (map). They materialize the limit of the race area. If you cross this limit you will be disqualified. Do not hesitate using them as resting spot by hanging on them. It is a good way to stand by or to wait for a boat without deviating. The equipment - An isothermal wetsuit is compulsory for everyone (at least 3mm Shorty). - You have to wear your lycra (Bib number). It has to be worn on all other equipment (bag, camel bag ). The number has to be readable as long as you run; it is the only way for the organization to identify you. If you give up, you have to report your number instead of your name. - You have to carry a 3 meters long of rope (minimum 4 mm of diameter) in order to hang up easily to a boat or a buoy. - The weighty vest is forbidden. 5 REGISTRATION GUIDE Page 5 / 11 LOCAL ADVISE Signals of distress In case of physical or technical problems: - Do never leave your equipment. Under no circumstances. - Do never leave your rigging. Under no circumstances. (Your board will be your best raft and your rigging will avoid you from going away). - Do not swim alongside your equipment, you would be less visible for the help. - Sitting down on your board, move your arms slowly up and down. Be careful and observer. You are the most efficient safety for other riders around you. And THEY are your safety. That is although the spirit of the Defi Wind! The dangers area Be careful, in Gruissan we oft sail near the beach looking for unlimited speed. But it is not without danger! - Sailing to the South (to the Vieille Nouvelle Beach) you will pass near a West cardinale, you have to let it by your right side. There is a hydrant (prise d eau). We already let some fins and motors - Caution, at the mouth of the pond of Ayrolle, there are a sandbank and a lot of alga - Be careful to the variation in water level, it depends on the wind - Off Gruissan and the Ayguades (1mile), there are 4 cardinal buoys: it is a no-sailing area. If you see them, you are on a wrong way! The clapot The farer you sail, the hardest it becomes sailing. You can t go fast without getting tired. It is better to tack in order to slide on the flat water. The shortest road is not always the fastest! The sandbank If the water becomes brown, it means that the sand is closed. Hang off your harness and keep your foot in the straps in order to anticipate a possible strake. The harness lines Double the harness lines by using two different sizes. Depending on the evolution of the wind, you will find by yourself, which is the most adapted length. And if one breaks, you still have one! The start The rabbit goes from the bottom line (the widest point), till the beach. You have two options: 1. Going from the wide at the top but being obliged to go upwind in order go back alongside the beach. 2. Go from the edge later but without having to upwind. Direction and strength of the wind The Tramontane is a sector north wind, generally North West, which means at 315, so from the beach. Before starting, try to check the forecasts of the day. If it is more North (370 ), be careful, the first way will be downwind but when you come back you will have to sail upwind. You might have to starboard tack. If it is more West, don t worry, it will be happy! The Tramontane is always less windy on the Chalet beach side.
