Paphos International Sailing Club Newsletter Autumn 2014 edition 002 New web site: Welcome to the latest news from PISC Hope you have read my previous edition which was the first edition for our brand new club web site. The General Committee have now taken over the task of PISC Webmaster from Paul Mc after after his many years of running it. During this time he has spent thousands of hours working for the club on this project and we give thanks to him for all his efforts. The new web site will be updated by several Club Officers which will spread the considerable load of updating information to the web. The Club web site has and continues to be seen by persons all over the World. It is very time consuming and it takes many hours to produce the moving feast of information. We look forward to the Membership fully utilising the Members section and Club Forum This latest newsletter updates you with further events and Club news that have taken place since August. You will have noticed that I did not report on the EGM as I had much Summer news to pass on in my first edition. I also had to report fully on Bart s Bash and the Kestrel International Open and the Autumn Regatta for Members. So here we go 12 Sep 2014 Extraordinary General Meeting The General Committee called for an Extraordinary General Meeting to brief the membership on findings from the sub-committee report on the future of the Geroskipou club house. Vice Cdre Paul H-A chaired the sub-committee and the report was produced during the Summer. V Cdre went into the detail of the extensive report and the members quizzed him on the findings. To hold an EGM in September was a first for the Club and despite what could have been a low turnout, many members attended. Proxy votes were used for those at work and abroad which swelled the number of votes available. Some bitterness by members not happy with any prospective closure of Geroskipou has been encountered and it was expected that the EGM vote would show the way ahead with this emotive issue. The vote for Option A: To the tune of over 90 votes showed that there was an appetite for moving the club house. The General Committee now have to ensure that appropriate licenses are achievable for any new club house they might take on in the near future. Geroskipou will remain for the time being as the club house and members are continuing to clean, repair and re-organise the club house until the future move is arranged. Friday lunches of late have been 1 particularly well attended. RCH (Tony C) is now running with the day to day aspects of the old clubhouse and the possible new Club House. Stop Press: I have an up to date statement from him which follows: By RCH: Following the overwhelming decision of the members at the EGM in September, your committee and particularly the RCH have been working behind the scenes to move our clubhouse to new premises. The Club has obtained Health certificates and catering management qualifications for the people doing the catering (which are currently being applied to operations at Geroskipou), a Criminal Records clearance for the RCH and a sanitation certificate for the building. These are bureaucratic processes which were required as important pre-requisites prior to application for an alcohol licence from the Municipality. The application to the municipality has now been submitted. The feedback so far received is that since this is technically a change of use for the building (Taverna to Private Members Clubhouse) and a change in the responsible person/organisation, there is obviously a formal procedure that must be applied. This is strictly correct, but obviously another bureaucratic process that will lead to some delay in the application. Quote ends - Thanks Tony 3rd PISC Basic Dinghy Sailing Course (BDSC) This latest course was held in excellent conditions. It enabled the instructors to maximise their time on the water for the benefit of the students. By doing so the students were able to put into practice the knowledge learnt from the theory lessons and land drills and to consolidate this into practical experience. Another six willing volunteers stepped forward on the 12 th of October to learn the basics of sailing. The Chief Instructor Phil M led the team of Assistant Instructors with the detailed syllabus. Course #3 comprised Penny H-A, Hilary A, Sheila G, Roy H, Steve A, Simon M.

So to you all, a huge thank you for your contributions in making this a very successful course. Best regards Phil M Chief Instructor PISC Race Management Course #1 at Lesley s villa The first race management course was held in August at Lesley s villa. The course comprised John M, Tony D, Dave S, Jim R, Roy H, Chas K and Bill C. Lesley took the course and Phil officiated and it was a really well prepared and informative. All in a really useful course for those now moving into race management. Chief Instructor addresses Basic Sailing Course #3 The students had a lot of information to take in, particularly those who had not sailed in dinghies before. Wayfarer s Eleanor, the club Wayfarer Green Goddess and Wayfarer Jasmine were used throughout the four day course. Thanks to the generosity of the owners for providing the two new Wayfarer s for the students to use. Many lectures were given by the Assistant Instructors on subjects such as Clothing and Equipment, Rules of the road, Hypothermia and Heatstroke, The five essentials, Lee Shore Dangers, Safety equipment, Weather and tides. Jan S added her medical knowledge to the team of Instructors. Club Kestrel Hartley was used for dry land training and much tacking and gybing took place. It was also used for the capsize training. The offshore capsize training in Hartley was held in an upper F3 wind which taxed the students particularly as they had to swim the 50 yards to the safety boat on completion of the righting! Well done to all the students for passing the course. Hartley stayed afloat between capsizes. Very well done the helpers, Instructors and Safety boat crews who attended througout the course. From the Chief Instructor: To the instructors I give my sincere thanks for the time they gave in encouraging each student to develop the essential skills that enabled them to demonstrate by the end of the course their new found confidence in sailing without an instructor. This does not happen by accident, it needs someone to impart knowledge in a way that students understand. To the Safety Boat coxswains and crew I also pass my sincere thanks as without your support the practical elements of the course could not proceed. The time you gave to the course was invaluable and is often overlooked, not so in this case, it was very much appreciated. Race Management Course #1 candidates with Lesley PISC Mark Laying Course #1 at Lesley s The students from the Race Management Course later moved to the Mark Laying Course which was also held at Lesley s Villa. Here we all studied in the morning at Lesley s for the theory then we all moved to the beach for the practical after launching both RIB s. The technique of streaming the buoy with 30 metres of line behind the RIB whilst holding the ground tackle onboard to be dropped at the command of the Race Officer was practised and tested. Whilst onboard the two RIB s the candidates laid race buoys and working with the R.O. we trialled the new GPS hand held units recently purchased for the club. 2

Another very useful course completed by our Members. Thanks very much to Lesley for her huge effort in preparing and running these courses for us and for the use of her villa. Well done all the candidates! Bart s Bash PISC excels itself involvement. We hoped to have over 25 dinghies on the water to take part on the day and after much lobbying by the then Deputy RCS, now RCS, Tony D we saw 27 dinghies all lined up for launching. Final results, show an amazing 30,717 participants took to the water, many for their first time, around the world, for the first Bart s Bash on 21 September Event Manager for Bart's Bash, Tim Anderton said "At no point could we ever have expected over five hundred (500) clubs in over sixty (60) countries to embrace the idea of getting on the water, racing, having fun and celebrating everything Bart stood for. A superb effort by all involved in this grand World-wide sailing event. 16,870 boats collectively sailed a staggering eighty seven million, seventy two thousand, seven hundred and sixty nine (87,072,769) metres, roughly the equivalent of sailing twice around the world. The race and fund raiser in honour of Olympic and Americas Cup sailor Andrew Simpson was a superb effort by all our members. l have included a photograph of Andrew after receiving his MBE obviously in less stressful times. A marvellous turnout for Bart s Bash This got PISC into the Guinness book of records attempt along with the other clubs who achieved over 25 boats afloat.the weather was sunny and a light wind approx F2 got the fleet to the large start line. A measured course was checked by gps for the two guest invigilators to be confident that we had met the required criteria. Disappointingly PISC was the only Cypriot club who took part. There was one Greek club and two clubs in another country not far away that also entered the spirit of the occasion... I know you are wondering, well alright I was 7211 th on CK3 - have a look for your result later on. If you can t see your name make sure you plan for next years event. PISC members raised over Euro 650 towards the Foundation. Excellent stuff! Andrew James Simpson, MBE (17 December May 2013), nicknamed " Bart", was an English sailor. He won a gold medal at the 2008 Summer Olympics [RIP] There were those of us who sailed, organised, registered, laid the course, witnessed, video d, photographed and fed the whole team who should all be very proud of our 3 I m wanting a commemorative label for my boat now! Where s the marketing manager?

Mike R (PISC) partnered with John G. David B (PISC) teamed up with Stewart M, Kit (Cdre PISC) teamed up with Ian R and William G (Warsash SC & PISC) and Claire L (Blackwater SC & PISC) sailed Hartley the club Kestrel. Claire had previously persuaded Richard Hartley of Hartley s Boats, Derby to donate a Kestrel to the PISC Fleet. He donated Hartley. This would make a nice windward buoy off A.G.! Kestrel Open & Autumn Peter Dicker Club Regatta 03 5th October It was great to welcome the visiting Kestrel Owner s Association members to the Island. The Club are extremely grateful to Claire L for her Organisation of this International event. The KOA team flew out to Paphos and moved into their accommodation which was a mix of rental villas or shared digs with PISC members. Cdre. Kit and Sharon W kindly agreed to put up Ian and Clare R. Richard R stayed with Richard and Ceri, John and Olive G, Ed and Jackie all stayed in a rented villa in AG. Claire with Hartley on delivery day Alternate Club House set up for the Regatta Stewart and Julie M and Sarah and William G stayed with Claire and John L at their villa in Kamares. The whole gang soon got down to Agios Georgios beach Boat Park to check out the boat allocation. Some testing and tuning took place in the morning and it was obvious we were going to see some excellent Kestrel sailing. The visitors joined up with their sailing partners from PISC and took to the PISC Kestrels for the Friday afternoon training race. a well rigged, well loved Kestrel from Rutland Water SC (I know that cos there are lots of Rutland SC Annual tickets on the transom)! This boat belonged to Charles Cox and it was well known to the Kestrel Owners Association (KOA) Team as soon as they saw her in the park. PISC certainly produced an impressive selection of Kestrels for the event. From Sail number 61 through to sail number PISC members had worked really hard to prepare and make sure they were all available and they were a credit to their owners. Claire L arranged the design and production of the Kestrel Class Trophies all in glass. She also produced some very nice bespoke polo shirts which were keenly received and worn throughout the week. Well done Claire, thanks for all your efforts! The Kestrel Class Association paid for the large Trophy for the winning boat in the series overall. The Kestrel Class Association, in conjunction with Richard Hartley of Hartley Boats donated six very smart Gul sailing 4

Jackets along with two rudder bags and two burgees as prizes for the Kestrel Open. It must be stated that these donations were extremely generous and our thanks go to Richard Hartley and the Kestrel Class Association. The sailors who entered the series of races were as follows: Dave B (PISC) sailed in Kestrel 2000 Corazon with Stewart M helming from The Royal Tay Yacht Club (KOA member) RCS Bill C (PISC) sailed in his MK1 Kestrel Alice with Taylor H (PISC), Cdre Kit sailed with KOA member Ian R (Broxbourne SC) in Mk1 Kestrel Kit and Kaboodle Jon H (PISC) and Tony J (PISC) sailed in Kestrel Wavedancer John G KOA (Alton Water SC)helmed Mike R s (PISC) Kestrel 2000 Second Wind. Ray G (PISC) and Graham H(PISC) sailed in Kestrel Mk1 Little Nellie. Richard P (PISC & Beaumaris SC) and Richard R (KOA & Beaumaris SC) in Kestrel 2000 Black Magic Mike P (PISC) and Tom A (PISC) in Mk 1 Kestrel Cracker John L (PISC) and Olive G (KOA & Alton Water SC) in Kestrel Mk1 Sea Yew Robin M (PISC) and Cathy L (PISC) in Kestrel Mk2 Laissez-faire Olaf and Elias H (PISC) in Kestrel 2000 Windhover Rear Commodore (Sailing) hands over the reigns to his Deputy Tony D. Newly Appointed Rear Commodore (Sailing) Tony D It was with great sadness that Bill C announced that he would be handing over the position of Rear Commodore (Sailing) to his Deputy Tony D, subject to ratification by the General Committee. Bill has put In a huge amount of time and effort for the club over the past year and also in many other aspects of club life well before that. He took on the position from Jon H who served his term in Bill has organised the Club s last three regattas and also the 2014 inaugural Bart s Bash in association with Tony D. Very well done Bill, we are sure you will still be a huge advocate of sailing and racing at the beach. Make sure you get some quality sailing time in now Billy! The flags fly on Mandoulis Beach Café at Agios Georgios The visitors and PISC members went to the Sunset Restaurant for the Friday evening dinner. The PISC Alternate Club house was bustling all weekend. On the Saturday night we held a large Barbeque which saw over 110 guests attend for an exquisite warm night at the beach. We were even treated to a fire juggling demonstration by Elias H which was awesome. The Sunday racing started earlier in the morning to get two races in before lunch and a final afterwards. Bill briefing the sailors. Guests of Honour for the Laying Up Supper 5

Peter and Janine Scott Videographers & Photographers of Bart s Bash for PISC. Peter and Janine have photographed and video d the event for us. They were later to produce the Official video for sending to the Guiness adjudicators. Club members can buy the video and photo CD for 8 euros. Peter and Janine were subsequently invited to the Laying out Supper as guests of honour YOUR CLUB NEEDS YOU! The club always needs volunteers to help with organisation. Ask yourself what you have contributed to the club this month? If the answer is nothing then you should do something. If you find yourself complaining about things that are broken or you get annoyed with items that are not available at the beach or wherever (Club issues only please)! Please volunteer to RCH/RCS to help the Committee to rectify the issue. We always need help with socials, sailing issues, regatta organisation, training teams, sponsorship, trophy preparation&allocation, gardening, sorting out sheds, buoy rigging, RIB maintenance, dinghy maintenance, trailer de-rusting, as well as catering and the many needs of the club house. Yes, the new Club House will need lots of attention too should we take it on. So be ready! Our club is becoming bigger; much bigger in all respects as we move forward. The club, after all, is self-help which saves us thousands of euro s each year by volunteers doing voluntary work. Good luck Boats changing hands As reported in the last edition we had many new Wayfarer s arrive for Members this summer we also saw other dinghies and power boats change hands 6 Kestrel Red Kite changes hands again Red Kite had to sit out the grand Kestrel International Open with her top and bottom covers on and a For sale notice on her! Not a very happy event for her! Well the latest news now is that Claire (she who buys boats like some buy handbags!) has now purchased Red Kite from Brian L and this meant that she (Red Kite, not Claire) was unwrapped again and sailed around the cans in October for the first time since the summer, I think she got a result, so all is well with her. Motor Boat Kingston Ray F s power boat has now moved from Lee s Boat shop in Kissonerga and has been trialled by a power boat rental company in Limassol so Kingston will now be on the water in 2015 in Limassol. Kingston off to Limassol Scorpion I said paint it black now sold to Pissouri partners Sam and Barbara. For Sale: Laser Pico with trolley (grey/blue sail) Nice boat hardly used. Please contact Claire should you like one of these nippy, modern dinghies. Laser Vago with gennaker, trolley etc. now available as boat for crews of 75kg and below. Offers to RCS Power Boat For Sale: Brian L has his very clean powerboat Rhian Ceri up for sale. American Mercruiser 135hp engine. Ski s, tow line etc newish trailer. 7 There is always a selection of boats for sale advertised on the notice board in the Club House. TRAFALGAR DAY AT QUARRY COVE We had an excellent turnout for the annual Trafalgar day beach party. Many thanks to Peter B for arranging the event and for bringing Pete s Pet full of members to Quarry Cove. Peter D and Jo on Cloud 9 (40 foot Cranchi) laid off the beach at anchor with their guests.they did venture ashore in their rubby dubby as seen in the Photo Pete s Pet beached Photographic Competition No prize available unfortunately Pete and Jo hit thebeach. We also rented, two of George s Watersports hire boats, one skippered by me, Chas and the other by Rick W. Brian L turned up in Rhian Ceri also filled with members as they headed for the beach. The smaller boats were beached onto the sand and then the barbeques and food were broken out. Martyn and Janet N came in their powerboat with another boat load. At the designated hour (1200), Peter B, the V. Cdre and I spoke to the whole team and I read out our Battle of Trafalgar story and then gave the toast. My half bottle of Martinique dark rum soon disappeared. We then set out the lunch fare and had a lovely afternoon in the sun. Whoops, guess who this is! Looks like a nasty fall! Cloud 9 at anchor for Trafalgar Day Rustic coffee tables laid on! 7

By Editor: I just managed to download and fit the 27 positions of our team in the Bart s Bash. Sorry the font is very small and the crew was not listed but well done all. This has been a very busy Autumn and as usual I will be producing the next issue with details of the annual Laying Up Supper Award winners. Sail First: If you have any articles of interest please let me have a draft by so that I can enter it into the latest news letter. All the best to our distant members. Editor for Commodore At the time of going to press we note that Sail First have moved at least six J80 s to the new Limassol Marina. We wish Michael well with this new site of operations. Our easy availability to sailing these boats in Paphos will be sadly missed for those who have sailed on them. I am not sure whether any remain in the area or whether they are to return for next season if I find out I will let you know. 10
