6 NULLAGINE REMOTE COMMUNITY SCHOOL CROSS COUNTRY On Thursday 31 st August the students of Nullagine RCS participated in our first ever school cross-country. We had a couple of practices during the week to get used to the running course, and then with the help of Fair Game Volunteers, who generously donated free running shoes, singlets and shorts to the students, we got our races under way. The winner of the K-3 Class race was Rodginea Kelly, who ready at a steady pace throughout the race and was a clear winner, Sharneil O Connor came in at 2 nd place. The winner of the 3-6 Class race was Paishom Landy, with Lyndsay Crusoe coming in at a close 2 nd. The winner of the 7-12 Class race was Maitland Malana, who made a solid effort throughout the entire race and gave his best effort. Jerome Wilberforce came in at 2 nd place with another awesome effort. All of the students made a fantastic effort and cheered each other on to finish the race. The winners were awarded with a prize from the Fair Game Volunteers, and one student was chosen from each class to receive an award of Most Effort. I would like to thank all of the Nullagine RCS Staff and the Fair Game Volunteers for helping to marshal the race, and I would like to congratulate the students on a fantastic group effort! Mrs Emma Dawson NULLAGINE REMOTE COMMUNITY SCHOOL WORM FARMS On Wednesday 6 th September we had a visit from Matt Grosse (BC Iron) and Graham Woodard (YourPatch), to continue our progress in our WAHSP School Gardens, and to make our very own Worm Farms! Graham gave a talk on how worm farms work and explained the conditions that worms like to live in cool, dark and damp. He then showed us how to build a worm farm. Maitland helped to measure and cut out holes in the bottom of the worm box while Graham measured and cut out holes in the bottom of the spare top box. The bases of the boxes were then covered with a layer of shade cloth, to allow the worm wee to go through into the bottom box, without drowning the worms in the soil. The students helped Graham to put the mulch and soil into the middle box, then we got to hold the worms to see what they look and feel like. Graham carefully put the worms into their new home, and we fed them shredded white paper and some vegetable leaves out of our garden. We learnt that worms like to eat paper (without print), tea bags, ground coffee beans, leafy greens, fruit (except for citrus) and vegetables, and they don t like bread, oil, onions or meat! When the worms have processed the soil (which will take about 4-6 months), we will remove the worms from the soil and set up the top box as their new home, and we will use the worm poo as fertilizer in our school gardens for next year s crops. We have 2000 worms in our two worm farms, and by next year we should have up to 4000! We love our worms!!!
7 YEARS 7-12 CLASS BILBY CONSERVATION PROJECT The High School class spent three days working with Fiona, Martin, Neil and Frank to help with researching Bilbys in the Pilbara. We walked around local areas of the bush and mapped the Bilby habitat boundary around Bilby burrows and diggings. On the first day we set up infrared cameras to try to catch the Bilbys at night. On the second day there were no photos on the cameras, because the diggings weren t fresh. Then we looked for new burrows and fresh diggings and set up the cameras again. On the third day we found that there were some photos of the Bilbys going into their burrows at night, it was very exciting to see the Bilbys! Over the three days we collected scat (poo) for DNA testing to find out how many Bilby s are in the area. We will continue working with Fiona, Martin, Neil and Frank to track and protect Bilbys in Nullagine. FOOTY TRAINING WITH NEWCREST On Monday 11 th of August we had a visit from Shane and Callan from Newcrest to learn some footy skills. We (K-4 students) went to the oval next to school first and Shane taught us how to hand-pass a footy correctly and how to kick a footy. We played some fun games to practice passing the footy. The Year 5-11 students went to the oval second, and learnt some skills too before playing a fun game of footy. We had a great time and would like to say a huge THANK-YOU to Shane and Callan for visiting us!!

18 Introducing the new OIC at Nullagine Police Station. Sgt Rob Smithson has recently commenced as the new OIC at Nullagine Police Station. Sgt Smithson returns to Nullagine after having served there from 2008 to Sgt Smithson has been a police officer for over 33 years with the last 15 years being stationed at Country postings including Collie, Carnarvon, Nullagine, and Katanning. In the few years that have passed since being in Nullagine there has been some huge growth in the size & number of the mine sites surrounding Nullagine. There have been much needed improvements to the Marble Bar Road. I believe that a Police Officer should contribute to a community not only through their work but also through an active involvement in community groups. Until arriving at Nullagine, Sgt Smithson was an active Rotarian and involved in community based projects at Katanning. Sgt Smithson encourages members of the community to become involved in assisting Police when called upon and take an active role in preventing crime. On Policing, the community are reminded that the Police have limited resources and are not able to be everywhere at the one time. Police response to tasks is based on a priority system. Tasks that involve a strong likelihood of immediate harm to a person will receive a higher priority than a standby task at a meeting. Over the next few weeks Sgt Smithson hopes to meet most members of the community and will be introducing himself to business & community members.
