Dec, Edition brought to you by Freshwater Community Bank Branch The Directors, Ambassadors and Staff of the Freshwater Community Bank Branch would like to wish all our customers, shareholders and their families the very best for the upcoming Christmas season and a happy, safe, prosperous and healthy New Year. 1 P age
Education & Environment Be the Change After the recent Bendigo Bank Be the Change filming event held at the Freshwater branch the two customers involved were each offered $1000 to give to a charity or local orginisations of their choice. Laurel Fisher chose to split her donation giving $500 to Forest Netball Club and $500 to Freshwater Surf Life Saving Club. Matt O Brien chose to give his donation of $1,000 to Northern Beaches Secondary College Mackellar Girls Campus P & C Assoc. to assist with the purchase of new sporting equipment. Cheque presentation shots can be seen below: Photo 1 Laurel Fisher with FCB staff members Kerryn Hamilton and Sandra Kleiner Branch Manger Photo 2 David and Laurel Fisher, Alan Burns Freshwater SLSC President and Sandra Kleiner Photo 3 Matt O Brien presenting to Mackellar Girls Campus Principal Christine Del Gallo Photo 1 Photo 2 Photo Youth Observer project a great success This year s HFSL/FCB Youth Observers Josh Viljoen & Isabelle Ritchie both From St Luke s Grammar School decided their project would focus on the important issue of Organ and Tissue donation with a particular connection with the Government s initiative Donate Life. Led by the Organ and Tissue Authority, Donate Life Week is a key part of the Australian Government's national reform program to increase organ and tissue donation and transplantation outcomes. Josh and Isabelle noted that the biggest issue surrounding organ and tissue donation was the lack of awareness and information about firstly the process and secondly it s overwhelming impact. To change this and do their part for the community focus they held a stall at the Manly Village Markets in November. It s switching your banking to us. But it s Bigger than that. It s over $2.6 MILLION back into the local area to support local schools, surf clubs, sporting orginisations & community groups. 2 P age
Education & Environment This was just in time for the Donate Life s annual Thank You Day honouring all those who have donated to ensure others can live a better life. Information documentation about the importance of having the conversation, and the impact that donating can have, as well as personal stories, sign up opportunities, yummy treats and Donate Life merchandise was handed out to those who visited the stall. HFSL/FCB Director Noela Roberts supported Josh and Isabelle on the day and they raised over $1000 with this money being donated to the Heart Foundation. So consider this. you too can DECIDE, DISCOVER AND DISCUSS. Support Donate Life. Make your decision count and register today at Home Sweet Sleepout 2017 Car? Couch? Home Right now an estimated 200 young people on Sydney s Northern Beaches are without a permanent home. On September 15, Link Housing for The Burdekin Association hosted Home Sweet 2017, a charity sleepover to raise funds and awareness for youth in need, with special guest MC Christian Wilkins and Member for Warringah Brad Hazzard attending. All funds raised were donated to the Burdekin Association who provide housing support, counselling and training for young people who are homeless or at risk. Link Housing provides safe and affordable housing to those at risk of homelessness or unable to afford marketpriced private rentals. Link Housing and The Burdekin Association have been working together for more than 25 years, providing housing and support for more than 500 vulnerable youth on the Sydney s Northern Beaches. Sleeping over on behalf of Freshwater Community Bank Branch were Ambassadors Violet Warner, Liam Yeats, Ian Joynson along with Chairman Trevor Sargeant. 4 Business & Community MS Sydney to the Gong 2017 Cycling 90km from Sydney to Wollongong The MS Sydney to the Gong Ride is a special part of Sydney s cycling heritage and the best organised, most respected and spectacular one day Community cycle in Australia. Since 1980, hundreds of thousands of cyclists have hit the road to Wollongong and raised over $20 million dollars to support people with Multiple Sclerosis. This year s ride saw customer Katie Earl join Sandra Kleiner (Branch Manager) her husband Paul along with staff member Cheerie Watt complete the ride in what were very wet conditions. Between them they raised a total of $5,000 for Multiple Sclerosis. Proudly brought to you by 4 P age
Sport & Community Manly Croquet Club Seabreeze Tournament What does it take to make a good (or even great) croquet tournament? Answer - nice people, pleasant weather, green lawns, good food and great croquet. The Seabreeze had it all and more! Whilst we do need rain, it waited until after the tournament. Well, there were showers on the last Saturday when the finals of the Association Handicap Singles and Doubles were played, but not enough to dampen our spirits (the players didn't get that wet either). There were some very exciting games, none more so than the semi-final of the Association Handicap Singles between Liz Montague and Ron Buist. Ron needed to take his second ball almost all the way round and peel his first ball through one back to tie, a feat he achieved. In the following turn Liz managed a cross court croquet, scored the hoop after a difficult hoop approach to win by one. Now that's exciting! It was great to see Tony Hall venture up from Canberra to play in the Golf Handicap Singles and Doubles. Winners included the said Tony Hall, the husband/wife combination of David and Lyn Snedden, Steve Miles, Alan Robinson and Des Wilkinson. With assistance from Port Macquarie visitor Hermann Camphuis, club member Joseph De Giovanni was a winner in the Doubles. This tournament, which ran over a fortnight, could not have taken place without the tremendous assistance of many people far too numerous to individually name and our thanks go to them. Similarly the wonderful support of our sponsors including Freshwater Community Bank Branch is very much appreciated. Former Mayor of Manly Jean Hay and husband David are supports of the Manly Croquet Club and enjoy attending the Seabreeze Tournament presentation Next year's tournament will be our 50 th and planning for that is already underway! 6 Sport & Community Harbord Swim Club swims again The Harbord swimming Club, formally the Harbord Diggers Swimming Club (a sub club of Harbord Diggers) has organised weekly competitive swimming events since Initially events were held in the freshwater rock pool during the summer but moved to the Harbord Diggers 25 metre pool when it was completed. Twice weekly competitive swimming was held throughout the year. Visitors from other swimming clubs and family members frequently joined these events. The club also swam at annual carnivals organised by other clubs including Castle Hill RSL, Manly Leagues, South Sydney Juniors, St George Leagues, Cronulla Leagues, Dubbo RSL, Dee Why RSL and AIF Swimming Association. Social events have been held including Christmas party, presentation dinner, occasional beach side BBQs and a twilight swimming carnival during summer at the Freshwater rock pool. After the Diggers Club pool closed in September 2015 the swimming club continued to hold a weekly swimming competition at the Warringah Aquatic Centre with support for lane hire and public liability insurance from the Harbord Diggers Club. Support by the Diggers Club ceased in January Since then members of the club have not been able to continue competitive swimming at the aquatic centre because of the lack of public liability insurance required by Council and the expense of lane hire on top of paying entry fees. However club members are keen to keep the club going and continue to swim socially as a group at Warringah Aquatic Centre and compete at other club carnivals. Club members are keen to re-establish regular club competitive swimming. We are a group of like-minded people, held together through swimming and associated social activities. Some have been part of this group for 50 years. The swimming club had a team participate with some success in a carnival at Castle Hill RSL Club yesterday attended by six clubs from all over Sydney. Marion Robertson came third in the 25m freestyle nearest to the nominated time event and Ian Sharp third in the 50m freestyle nearest to the nominated time event. We also came second in the 10 person relay. A team of eleven attended a carnival at Dubbo that was hosted by Dubbo Ducks Swimming Club and this event has been held yearly for the last 30 years alternately at Dubbo and Freshwater, they took the new club banner along for the trip. This photo was taken at a competitive swim meet at the Warringah Aquatic Centre on 12 th November. 6 P age
Sport & Community Manly Warringah Baseball Umpires keep control This dedicated group of individuals step up to behind home plate and on the field each week to keep control of local baseball games for the enjoyment of all. This season saw the eight members of the Umpire group be on call for home plate and field duties at the 2017 winter finals. Manly Warringah Netball Association At the recent Manly Warringah Netball Association Annual General meeting the MWNA Laraine Hunter Memorial Trophy / FCB Club of the Year was awarded to Collaroy Plateau Netball Club. The Club received a $500 voucher for a new account. Shown here presenting the trophy and cheque to member representatives from Collaroy Plateau are Lisa Hunter (middle) Simmone Linay (2 nd left) and Sandra Kleiner (far right) Be part of something bigger Call us on or visit the Branch at 20 Albert Street Freshwater 7 P age
Surf & Community Local Surf Clubs and Community Bank get their Ducks in a Row Freshwater Community Bank Branch relationship with Freshwater, SLSC, North Curl Curl SLSC and South Curl Curl SLSC goes back over 14 years. The clubs have received over $400,000 in sponsorship during this time. IRBs, motors, sponsorship of ocean swims, first aid equipment, rescue boards, rescue tubes, Ambu manikins for training and defibrillators. This month the three clubs were given a great boost with each club receiving a brand new IRB. The IRBs are an expensive piece of rescue equipment and are a rapid response in any aquatic rescue, in any surf conditions. Last year IRBs made 652 rescues in NSW. They are an essential piece of rescue equipment at any beach. Sandra Kleiner for Freshwater Community Bank Branch had this to say: As a community bank, Freshwater Community Bank Branch shares strong ties to the local community. Surf Life Saving embodies the local community, the spirit of competition and the pursuit of excellence. Freshwater Community Bank Branch has enormous respect for the volunteers keeping our local beaches safe and the values of local community. Freshwater Community Bank Branch philosophy is "what's good for the community is good for business" and is proud to be supporting Surf Life Saving. We look forward to continuing our sponsorship with our local surf clubs for many years to come. 3 IRB s with surf club members, FCB Directors and Branch Manager at Freshwater Beach. 9 Community Supporting Sanfilippo Children s Foundation Fiona Higgins -THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT! I just wanted to say, once again, that I am very grateful for your generous donation to the Sanfilippo Children s Foundation. So as you can imagine, the New York experience was incredible a 4.5-hour marathon in the rain with 60,000 + other runners, but greeted by the most amazing support and encouragement from the crowds lining the streets. Highlights were definitely the gospel choirs on corners, high-fives from excited kids, and random strangers yelling Fiona, you ve got this! and Go Australia! Not to mention the humorous signs held in the crowd, such as At least you re running better than the government, Run like Trump s behind you and You d better run because the beer is running out. Oliver and me in the 5km Dash to the Finish a day before. We had an absolute ball running along Fifth Avenue and Central Park On return to Australia, there was the Tough Mudder (last Sunday). See attached self-explanatory photo: 18 kms of mud and a bunch of obstacles involving monkey bars, electrodes and ice. Maybe you might join us next year? Our team of 12 survived! And we were thrilled to be joined in the mud by Meg Donnell, founder and CEO of the Sanfilippo Children s Foundation. Thank you so much for your support, both philanthropic and moral. It s meant a lot to me. Disclaimer: Information, views or opinions expressed in the Freshwater News newsletter originates from many different sources and contributors throughout the community.
