The churches of Freshwater will be hosting Freshwater Community Carols on December 9 in Freshwater Reserve (near the Surf Club) from 7.30pm. All are warmly invited to celebrate Christmas together, with favourite carols to sing along to, a puppet show and the chance to enjoy a relaxed evening picnic with friends and family. From 6.30pm, enjoy the BBQ and warm up from the Harbord PS Band & Choir. Come along early to get a good spot. 1 P age

2 Education & Environment Youth Observer project stories Freshwater Community Bank Branch Youth Observer program was again a success this year. Sophie Keoghan from NBSC Manly Selective High School is seen here with Freshwater Community Bank Branch Director Noela Roberts presenting a $500 donation cheque to the SES Manly branch, the donation funds will assist purchase a training defibrillator. Sophie chose the NSW State Emergency Service (SES) as it is a rescue service dedicated to assisting the community during emergency situations. It is a volunteer-based organisation that provides 24 hour assistance every day of the year, and has approximately 9,000 volunteers across the state. Some of their assistance requirements include: Road accident rescues Helicopter rescues Bush search and rescues Evidence searches (both metropolitan and rural) and other forms of specialist rescue that may be required due to local threats. NSW SES also assists other emergency services when they are performing major operations. These services include the NSW Police Force, the NSW Rural Fire Service, Fire and Rescue NSW and the Ambulance Service of NSW. The SES has a volunteer connection to Manly Selective High School, and through this connection Sophie was able to make contact with the Manly Unit. 2 P age

3 Education & Environment Matthew Chen from NBSC Manly Selective High School donated his funding allocation to the NBSC Cromer Campus Integrated Studies group. As a brother of a former Integrated Studies student of this group, he wanted to make sure they could have an excursion to the new PCYC at Dee Why. Activities included boxercising, basketball and Futsal. All students participated and had a great time finishing off with a sausage sizzle at the end of the day. Ruby Ankers & Gaia Willemsen from NBSC Mackellar Girls Campus gave a combined donation of $1,000 to the National Parks and Wildlife Foundation to assist with the Taronga Zoo Penguin Project to spread awareness about the rapidly declining population of Little Penguins, especially in the Manly area. The Manly Penguins live underneath Manly wharf and in surrounding beaches such as Cabbage Tree Bay. However, because of overdevelopment, pollution, humans, foreign weeds and plants and predators like foxes, cats and dogs the penguin population has significantly declined. Australia s Foundation for National Parks and Wildlife estimates that the population of this friendly little animal has been in serious decline. Thanks to the help of organisations such as Australia s Foundation for National Parks and Wildlife and Taronga Zoo, the population has slowly started to recover, but there is still a long way to go before they are no longer at risk. Curl Curl North Public School Colour Run fundraiser Sandra Kleiner, our Business Development Manager attended the Curl Curl North Public School P&C Colour Run Explosion Event today & managed to stay clean! Here she is with Andrew Whitaker, President of the P&C. Also there supporting the school was Manly Warringah Sea Eagles, Daly Cherry Evans & one of their fantastic teachers, Maxine Gourlay. 3 P age

4 Sport & Community Manly Warringah Netball Association Hosts the Inaugural NSW State All Abilities Netball Carnival Manly Warringah Netball Association hosted the Inaugural State All Ability Netball Championship on Sunday 9th September. 90 girls from NSW and one team from South Australia played in either a competitive stream or skills sessions. It is hoped that this can become a permanent fixture on the calendar. MWNA Volunteers lunch and awards presentation Manly Warringah Netball Association again hosted a successful Volunteers Thankyou lunch at Mona Vale Golf Club to recognize the amount of volunteer hours put in coaching a team, running a club and the association, with lots of awards were presented. Manly Warringah Sapphires Premier League Netball A great end to another successful season for the Manly Warringah Sapphires who s Opens team finished in 3 rd place and the U/20 s team finished in fourth place after 14 rounds of hard fought netball. The U/20 s were knocked out in the Semifinals by rival Bendigo Bank sponsored team Central Coast Heart and the Opens team lost in the Finals to another Bendigo Bank sponsored team the Erina Hawks. 5 Sport & Community Manly Croquet Club Events in the Association part of the Seabreeze kicked off on Saturday 6 th October with the courts underwater. The rained eased and the courts soon drained with play commencing close to the starting time. The rain came down and kept coming down but the players braved the conditions and play went on. That is until about lunchtime on Wednesday when the courts went under again and play in six matches had to be suspended and the courts pegged down. We did have two days when it didn t rain. Thanks goes to the players who played in atrocious conditions without complaint and the referees Jim Hicks, Maria Morton, Ron Humpherson, Bob Green and Fay Simpson. Thanks also to the players who refereed. Steve Miles from Cammeray won Block 1 with four wins on a count back. David Stanton from Cammeray won Block 2 with four wins on a count back. Glenda Chaplyn from Southport Qld won Block 3 with four wins. Block 4 was won by Evelyn Humpherson from Cammeray with four wins. Block 5 was won by Michael Gill from Cammeray on a count back with 3 players having four wins. The Mary Duckworth Memorial Trophy for the bronze player with the most hoops in singles matches went to Graham Maynard from Cammeray. Stephen Howes from Cammeray was surprised to win the Jean Hay Trophy for the most peg outs but conditions made pegging out tough. Thanks to all the Manly members who made this tournament run smoothly. Special thanks to Rhonda Newton who, with her team, looked after the social side of things and to Rose Anne White who organized the team who set up the courts each morning. If you are interested in learning to play Association contact Bernie Gibson on or David Gibson on Freshie Tri Club Freshie Tri Club staff members Sandy Kleiner and Cheerie Watt along with partners and customers Recently completed the MS Ride from Sydney to Wollongong, they completed the 83km ride in a time that they were all happy with, raising over $2,500. The recent Nippers registration day shows Saul Carroll, Nipper President here with a few of the nippers holding proudly the show bags we given out to them with their registration. 100 Year Anniversary Carnival and return of the Curly 1000 beach sprint South Curl Curl Surf Life Saving Club held their 100 Year Anniversary Carnival in October. Freshwater Community Bank branch was the proud sponsors of the Curly 1000 beach sprint...'the world's richest beach sprint'. 7 Business & Community Manly Warringah Sea Eagles Manly Warringah Sea Eagles held their Annual Awards night at the Crown Casino Darling Harbour in September, representing the Freshwater Community Bank Branch were Director Julie Rigoni and our in branch Sea Eagles tragic staff member Kerryn Hamilton, Julie presented the 2018 Gordon Willoughby Medallion to Dale Cherry-Evans. Invictus Games Directors of Freshwater Community Bank Branch, Denise Goldstein, Peter Harley and Julie Rigoni, pictured here with Member for Manly James Griffin MP were delighted to be invited as locals to host 350 participants from the Sydney 2018 Invictus Games. A ferry delivered the Invictus participants from Darling Harbour to the Q Station in Manly. Community Banks contribute funding to drought-impacted farmers Our farmers need our help so we've partnered up with Rural Aid & Nova 96.9's Fitzy & Wippa to provide support for farmers doing it tough in the current drought. 8 Community Centenary of Armistice 11 November 2018 Friends of Freshwater Inc. and Sean Rout from the Harbord RSL Sub branch who coordinated the Armistice Day event are to be congratulated on the commemorations that were held in Jacka Park and the Soldiers Avenue of Honour. It is worth noting that both of these sites were formally registered in 2016 with the State Government as Community War Memorials. Soldiers Avenue has local heritage listing for both its trees and plaques. A bronze bust of local WW1 nurse Alice Le Messurier and a bronze bust of the Unknown local soldier were unveiled during the ceremonies. Both were made available by grants secured by the Friends of Freshwater Inc. from State and Federal grant funds. A Commemorative bench was also unveiled at the end of Soldiers Avenue marking the Centenary 1918 to Laying a wreath on behalf of Freshwater Community Bank Branch on the day were Vice Chairman John Vaccaro and Director Julie Rigoni who were among more than 500 locals that were in attendance. 8 P age

9 Community Harbord Bowling Club Kids Christmas event Congratulations to Mish and the team at Harbord Bowling Club on a very successful children s Christmas event, even though the day was very hot many locals bought their children along and had a wonderful time meeting Santa, the Unicorns, bouncing on the Jumping Castle on the bowling green and cooling off by sliding down the giant water slide. We are glad that the Bank s canopy provide some shade relief to the ponies later in the afternoon. 9 P age
