29 February 2016/04 Titiro ki Runga Look Up and Reach for the Stars School Values - We want our children to be: Respectful; Caring; Honest; Responsible; Creative; Successful and to Persevere Welcome to Week 5 of term one. This lovely weather is really wonderful for our daily swimming lessons and your children have made great progress with their skill development. It has certainly helped having classes grouped together and we are fortunate to have some experts on staff to help with the teaching of skills. Check out the timetable of events and we look forward to you sharing this event with us. Richard and Clarissa held trials last week for our Year 6 competitive Rippa team. Wow what a difficult decision has to be made! We have a very strong group of Year 6 children who demonstrate great skills in this sport. There are also two Year 5 /6 teams. Find Out Fridays will be happening keep a look out in class notes for when this will happen at each year level. This is great hands on learning with a science focus. If you are able to, pop along and see what is happening on these mornings Charter: This has been reviewed and updated and is available on the website and on the little coffee table for reading. If you have any queries about the charter please feel free to pop in and have a chat with me. Lunch Orders: This Wednesday - Subway PTA Easter Raffle: Chocolate, Chocolate, Chocolate White, Milk, Dark!! Yum, yum, yum. Can the children please bring along an item for the PTA Easter raffle. All items will receive house points. Children will bring home raffle tickets to sell tomorrow. The PTA support our Duffy Books in Homes. Now that our school decile rating has increased we are no longer eligible for subsidised costs. Duffy Books are very worthwhile and we believe it is important that it continues. The Easter raffle will go towards Duffy Books something that all children benefit from. Nga mihi nui Linda. Principal Ph

STAFF NOTES Room 1 Kia Ora, My favourite moment is right now Noah exclaimed as we wandered down to the river, he lived and loved every moment of camp. CAMP Room 1 had a fantastic three days at Vertical Horizon last week. Well done to every student for striving to achieve personal best in all activities. Challenges ranged from staying away from home for the first time, kayaking, grass karts, climbing heights, swinging from heights, working cooperatively in groups and being organised for the next activity. There were a lot of highlights, some of which will be shared in the newsletter and on the school website over the next few weeks. Today I want to make special mention of all the parents who made camp possible. Thank you in particular to the five parents, Jo, Joanne, Tina, Kylie and Shane, who came out for the three days. I admire the way you calmly encouraged students to face their fears and your groups worked cooperatively. Thank you for being positive caregivers for all of Room 1. You were/are fabulous role models. Also thank you to every parent that helped out with transport and every parent that popped out for a few hours over the duration of camp. I know your children looked forward to your visits and enjoyed sharing their successes with you.
Thanks to all parents for enabling your child to participate in camp. Your support is greatly appreciated. Can we stay at camp for a week? asked Zahara-Li during the second day of exciting activities. Girls, stop talking, you are cleaning toilets tomorrow! grumbled Miss Barrett at 2am. Lost Property I will put the left over property, from camp, out on the courts before school on Tuesday. If it is raining lost property will be put on the Jump Jam stage in front of Room 2. This week. This week in class Room 1 has several follow up activities based on camp including Writing the focus will be writing recounts in the form of letters. Mathematics the focus in on probability. Reading reading examples of recounts. Class Goals for this week; To come to school ready to learn. To strive for personal best in all activities. To continue to work cooperatively to achieve challenges. To have the correct uniform bucket hat for school. Thanks for your support. Helen Barrett Room 2 Hi everyone, This week in maths, one group is continuing to look at number bonds and addition sentences. The other two groups are estimating and measuring the mass of objects using units such as marbles or blocks. One marble is used as one unit. On Thursday we have our school swimming carnival. For our class it takes place after lunch from Students will all need their togs, 2 towels and their drink bottles. On Friday we have a Find out Friday focusing on observations. Just a reminder for the children who want their lunch warm at lunch time. Please wrap their food in tinfoil and place in the white box at the office in the morning. The children s food will be put in the pie warmer and delivered to their classroom at lunch time. Have a great week, Jessica
Room 3 Hi everyone, I am really impressed with how well all the students are working in the pool. They are all improving so much and it is great to see them celebrating their successes. Please continue to send along their togs every day, even if it is wet or cold in the morning, as the weather often changes by the time we go swimming and the pools are really warm On Thursday we have our school swimming carnival. For our class it takes place after lunch from Students will all need their togs, 2 towels and their drink bottles. We hope to see you there cheering them on. Mrs Taunt will be teaching the class on Thursday while I help the other classes with the swimming carnival. In maths this week we are continuing to focus on number bonds and addition sentences with the Year 2 s and for the Year 1 s we are looking at comparing and matching sets of objects. Our focus words in reading for the Year 1 s this week are come and said. On Friday we have our next Find Out Friday. Our focus for these through the term is making observations. Our value we will be focusing on this week during inquiry is respect. Have a great week, Clarissa Room 4 Welcome to week 4. It s our swimming carnival this week on Thursday. We would love to have you come along and support or join in with the activities. With our inquiry this week we are continuing to look at successful teams and how they became successful, then linking this into our classroom and the culture we are designing. We re continuing with our recounts this week. Our current prompt is one time I really hurt myself. A focus for the class at the moment is to ensure the structure of the writing is correct and to improve the impact and elaboration of the ideas. We have started our focus on number in maths. We are currently exploring different ways to solve addition and subtraction problems. I am also encouraging the students to prove they are right when they tell me they have an answer as this refocuses them on how they worked it out instead of the answer. We are also learning about whole and decimal numbers and how these are created. Last week the first of many camp notices went home. We have a camp meeting at 6:00pm this Thursday 3 rd March to discuss possible fundraising ideas and
activities. I will also be drawing the names of the parent helpers this night. If you would like to be considered for this I need the sheet back by Wednesday please. We re continuing with our swimming/rippa programme for the week. The Spragg Banner squad are in full swing preparing for the event next week and we hope to have the rippa teams sorted by the end of the week. A ani te wiki nui Richard Room 5 Hello everyone. Welcome back Room 1. We look forward to hearing about the amazing experiences you had at camp. On Thursday we have our school swimming carnival. Rooms 5, 6 and 7 will be over at the pool between 11:30 and 12:30. This is a fun hour where the students can complete for house points and show you just how confident they have become in the water. A big thank you to Mrs Dravitzki for organising this. Please come and watch if you can. The students will need to bring: togs, two towels a drink bottle. We have noticed an increase in the number of students without togs. Students who swim everyday are making great progress. We are lucky to have Mrs Prestidge coaching an advanced group and they look like champions of the future. Several students have been able to move on to the next group as they gain ability and skill in the water. Just a little reminder - can you either write a note, ring Kay in the office or me if your child is unable to swim for some reason. [elizabethv@normanby.school.nz] On Friday we have our first Find Out Friday. Our focus for these through the term is making observations. This week we will be using our scientific observation skills in a number of different situations. We will use our senses to gather information and record it. We will also explore the difference between making an observation and inference. Last week we identified and described a number of emotions and grouped them as either unpleasant or pleasant. This week we will list appropriate ways to deal with these emotions at school and practise what each of these look like, sound like and feel like in our classroom through role play. Room 5 found the time to create self-portraits as superheroes during week 4. We are still working on this project. The next step is to describe our superhero personas and display it. This is part of developing a positive identity as a learner.
We have to finish off our investigation into probability this week and move onto developing our addition and subtraction skills as mathematicians. Have a great week. Liz Room 6 On Thursday we have our swimming carnival. This is a fun hour where we get to compete in activities for house points and showcase our swimming skills. Rooms 5, 6 and 7 will be at the pool between 11:30 and 12:30, you are welcome to come along and see what we are up to. All children will need togs, 2 towels and a drink bottle please. We have had an increase in children not swimming due to not bringing togs. Please send your child with a note, ring Kay in the office or me tashg@normanby.school.nz if your child is unable to swim. Many of our students are making great progress in swimming. On Tuesday and Wednesday, we had Mrs Smith in class. We have begun a chameleon art project with her that is looking really exciting. I cannot wait to see them finished! Mrs Smith chose chameleons after reading a story that explained how they change their colours depending on how they feel. For our inquiry unit we are talking about how different feelings make us react, we may not change colour like the chameleon but we do have responses. Mrs Smith is back with us on Wednesday so we will carry on with them then. We have also published a recount piece of writing based around marbling paper. We are definitely writers in Room 6! All of us should be very proud of the writing we have done, great use of language and descriptions. Our Writers Wall is much more interesting now that we have some work showcased on it! Have a wonderful week everyone. Tash Room 7 Well done to Maia and Daniel for doing a super job hosting assembly last Friday. Our bad hair day portraits are now displayed in our cloak bay. This week Ranginui and Sally will be hosting assembly. On Thursday we have our school swimming carnival. This is a fun hour where the students can compete for house points and show you just how confident they have become in the water. A big thank you to Mrs Dravitzki for organising this. Please come and watch if you can. Rooms 5, 6 and 7 will be over at the pool between 11:30 and 12:30. The students will need to bring togs, two towels and a drink bottle. Just a little reminder can you either write a
note, ring Kay in the office or me if your child is unable to swim for some reason. I have noticed the number of students without togs is slowly increasing. The students who swim everyday are making great progress. We are lucky to have Mrs Prestidge coaching the highest group and they look like champions of the future. Room 7 have written about swimming for the Kids Corner this week. This week in instructional reading we will be completing mini character studies about the main character in our book and using adjectives to describe them. At home you might like to ask your child to tell you something interesting the character did and how they are like or not like this character. Thank you for your support with home learning. There was a big improvement in the number of students who knew their spelling words on Friday. Have a great week, Mandy Room 8 Hi everyone, This week our values focus is on being caring. We will do lots of discussion and role-plays about what caring looks like, sounds like and feels like. Hopefully on Friday everyone will get a warm fuzzy from someone else because they were caught being kind and caring this week! Last week we learned a lot about persevering and the children were very good at thinking of something that they find difficult and decided that they were going to keep trying and keep practising until they get better. I have been very impressed by some children s perseverance in the swimming pool so far this term. At the start of swimming there were many who would not put their face in the water and didn t like water in their eyes, and now we have just a handful of children. Everyone else is ducking and diving and holding their breath which is very cool!! They kept trying and trying until they were successful now I can t keep them above water! This Friday is our next Find Out Friday and our context for learning how to gather and interpret data like a scientist is to look at how and why things melt. Please feel free to come along and join us for the morning. On Thursday afternoon we are having our junior school swimming carnival. This is a fun House competition with lots of games and relays. The emphasis here is on participation and cooperation. It would be great if you were able to come along and watch. I am out of the class on Tuesday. Mrs Sonja Smith will be teaching for the day. Have a great week, Jude
Room 7 Kids Corner Swimming At 10am we go swimming with Room 6 and 5. First we get our togs them we walk over to the pool. We wait until the covers are off then we get changed in our togs and hop in our groups. First we jumped into the pool. I made a big humungous splash. I got Mrs Van Rooyen. It was funny. Then I did 4 whole lengths with a flutterboard. Then the next week I m in the dolphins. I was glad. I like swimming because it s amazing. By Daniel We go swimming every day. We walk to the pool. We go in the changing room. Now we can get in the pool safely. We start kicking. After that we swim from one side to the other. Then we go to the grass field when we have finished. By Amber-Lee We go to the pools at 10am and Room 5 and 6 come with us. Sometimes they go earlier than Room 7 but first me, Ranginui, Koby-Tre and Angus take the covers off with Mrs Prestidge. Then we all get dressed.the boys are loud. My group that I go with is the whales.the group that I was in before was the dolphins. The other groups are the snappers and the starfish. The whales always go in the pool at the deep end. What we do is freestyle, then we do backstroke and last we do breaststroke. My favourite position is backstroke. By Zion First we all walk to the pool and wait for Ranginui and Zion to take the covers off. Then we get changed and sit in our groups. I m in the whales.we are in the water first today- that s exciting. First we do freestyle. We do two whole lengths then we do backstroke. Then the last thing is breaststroke. I like swimming because we get to learn. By Molly Oh boy, it is hot! We go swimming at 10:00. We swim with Room 5 and 6. First of all me and Zion and Koby-Tre and Angus have to get the covers off. The class walks over to the pool to get ready. Next it s swimming time. It is so cold. The dolphins and whales get to swim 5 lengths. After that the people are not so cold. It s good we get to go swimming. We want to be able to swim. By Ranginui Photographs taken by Maia and Ranginui
