3 April 2017/09 Titiro ki Runga Look Up and Reach for the Stars School Values - We want our children to be: Respectful; Caring; Honest; Responsible; Creative; Successful and to Persevere Welcome to week ten of term one. I have received great feedback about our two teams who went off to the Southern Shield last week. Your children demonstrated great sportsmanship, awesome behaviour and were a credit to you and their school. It is always very rewarding to hear such positive comments. PTA Fundraisers: Easter Raffle Please can all raffle tickets sold / unsold be returned by Wednesday April 5. Many thanks. It will be drawn at assembly on Friday. Aotearoa Marae Visit: As the weather forecast is for heavy rain we have deferred our visit until term 4. If you have already paid we will just keep a record of this and hold your payment until term 4 if that is okay. Vertical Horizons: Room 2 and 8 are heading off to camp next week for a two night / three day experience. Camps are a great experience for our children and Vertical Horizons is well set up to provide a range of challenges in a safe environment. It is also an opportunity for our children to work together outside of the normal school environment and as such is another awesome learning experience. Rippa Tournament: This is taking place on Wednesday and we have three teams entered. We wish all of our teams the very best. Thank you to Richard David, Shona and Chris for managing the teams. If the weather is not right the postponement day is Friday. Duffy Role Model Assembly: Monday April 10 at am. Our Duffy role model is Fifi Colston. Fifi Colston is many things artist, writer, illustrator, arts and crafts demonstrator, props and costume maker and wearable art designer, she usually has at least five things on the go at one time. 'I have a very low boredom threshold!' she says. Fifi is a published novelist, her 3rd junior fiction novel Glory shortlisted for the LIANZA Esther Glen Award. Her two more recent nonfiction titles on creative costuming for kids Wearable Wonders and

Ghoulish Get Ups have both won awards with Wearable Wonders earning the Elsie Locke Non Fiction Medal. Everyone is most welcome to come along to hear Fifi speak. Behaviour Celebration Day: As part of our behaviour management plan all children who have had none or less than three timeouts are in for a fun afternoon of water play. Children need a change of clothes or swimming gear and a couple of towels. Lots of fun water play is planned starting at 1.30 pm. Congratulations to Taene Nelley who has been selected in the Taranaki Under 11 s Rugby team. He will be playing a match against an Australian Team from Manly, Australia at Yarrows Stadium on Thursday 13 th April. Awesome news Taene well done. Southern Shield Rugby League Tournament Congratulations to everyone who participated in the Southern Shield Rugby League Tournament you all represented Normanby School admirably and should feel very proud of your efforts on and off the field. Both of the teams played hard but fair and improved as the tournament went on. You all supported each other, celebrating your successes and showing great sportsmanship at all times. I was particularly proud of the way you were all very respectful to the refs even when calls didn t go your way. Thank you to our coaches Karlin Ross and Foma i Vaitupu for sharing their time, rugby league knowledge and expertise with our students. We could not have performed as we did without your valuable efforts. The fact that so many of our players were Year 4 and 5 really bodes well for the future of rugby league at Normanby School. Many of the players had never played any form of full contact sport before. Finally, thank you to all of the parents, friends and whanau who supported our teams. It was pleasing to see that when the Normanby School teams played each other, 90% of the spectators in attendance were watching our game. It is incredibly important to the players to know that they are supported in their endeavours. Mr Doeg (Waterboy) Lunch Orders: This Wednesday is Subway Nga mihi nui Linda. Principal (Ph )

Room 2 Hi Everyone I hope you all had a great weekend and enjoyed that extra hours sleep on Sunday morning, I know I did. This week we are continuing statistics. The students will be carrying out statistical investigations, collecting data and displaying the data. We are continuing to work on our comprehension in reading and using the ITTM method. The ITTM method comes from the SHARP reading course that I was fortunate to take part in. The students read a piece of text in their head, then read a sentence at a time as a group, the teacher will then ask individual students to share their understanding of the sentence by saying I think that means, without parroting the words in the sentence, the student gives their understanding of that sentence. It is great to see the students working hard at this. In writing we are focussing on showing not telling by providing the opportunity for students to complete the 100 word challenge. They are getting straight to the point and using the keywords, which is great to see. We continue to work on our sentence structure within writing, ensuring that we are using a mixture of simple and compound sentences. A class goal is to publish one piece of writing to Seesaw each week. A huge thank you to those that are supporting their child with their home learning tasks. It has been great to see so many of the students completing the home learning tasks. We are really starting to see the results of the extra work done at home in the classroom as well. Please remember that home learning needs to be returned to school every Friday. Thank you to those parents that are continuing to support their child s use of Seesaw. We aim to have at least one piece of work published to seesaw. It has been great to see you commenting on your student s work. The league players need to bring their mouthguards every day this week please. The rippa teams have also been picked and had a session with Warwick Lehmart today. One more week till camp!!!! Have a great week everyone, Regards Anna Room 3 Hi everyone Congratulations Kobe, Kyin, Lucy and Acacia on hosting assembly so well. This week our hosts will be Kahn-Jahmal, Leo, Peylin and Kaitlyn. If you would like to have a look at the video we showed on Friday in assembly we have put it on our webpage. It has also been shared on Seesaw.

Our Chapter Chat book - Sideways Stories from Wayside School - has been very entertaining. Take the time to ask your child about some of the characters we have found out about in the book. In class we have been creating a very special piece of artwork about our families. It has required us to do lots of practise and recrafting along the way before we can even begin the final product. I have been really impressed with the effort the children have all put into this and they are all able to see their own progress with this. On Thursday afternoon and Friday morning Mrs van Rooyen will be teaching the class while I am on release. Have a good week everyone, Clarissa Room 4 Kia Ora everyone, Firstly I would like to congratulate all of the Room 4 students who competed at the Southern Shield league tournament. You were fine ambassadors for our school and played with good heart and sportsmanship. The children who are competing in the Howie Tamati tournament in New Plymouth will be bringing a note home this afternoon. Can these children please bring their mouthguards to school every day this week for practices. We have a large number of children from our class competing at the Southern Rippa tournament this Wednesday. A note went home for this last Friday. Can we please have the money for the bus to school asap. We are holding our interschool trials this week. The students interested in trialling for rugby had their trial today. The soccer and hockey trials will be held later in the week. We continue with statistics in maths. We will be analysing the data from our survey on where in the world ex Normanby students are. There continues to be an improvement in articulate thinking as we read using I Think That Means. If you would like more information on this please or come and see me. Our focus in writing continues to be to ensure that we have provided all relevant information to the reader and understand that changing and correcting parts of our draft is a normal part of the writing process. We have used the 100 word challenge as a tool to encourage this as there is only a limited amount of words to produce a quality and clear piece of writing. We will attempt to widen the word limit this week to further build the descriptive vocabulary and imagery as well. We are continuing to build a cooperative team culture within the class. This is an important and on-going part of Room 4 and who we are. Involved in this is

revisiting our clean anger strategies, being mindful of tone of voice along with what s being said and supporting one another when we are anxious and in our challenge/danger zones. Our next step is to build more cohesiveness within the room, helping others when they require it. If there is anything you would like to chat with me about, pop in and see me, otherwise you can ring school or me at richardb@normanby.school.nz A ani te wiki nui Richard Room 5 Kia ora koutou! We had lots of fun at the disco on Friday. Thank you to everyone who supported this event. We would really like to start practising our mihi but only three children have brought their mini-books back that I sent home last Monday. Please complete as much of the booklet that is relevant to your child/family and return it to school so we can all work on these. This week we will focus on learning about the parts of the wharenui. We will be learning a song to help us remember the different parts and hopefully we will be able to present this in our assembly next Thursday. I am out of the classroom on Friday so Mrs de Bruin will be teaching in Room 5. Have a great week, Jude judes@normanby.school.nz Room 6 Wow week 10 already! A very warm welcome to Shai who has joined us in Room 6. This week trials for inter school sports teams have begun. Can you please ensure your child has a change of clothes to play in. This is essential for our rugby team but also a good idea for soccer and hockey players if the field is wet. Rugby and hockey players will also need mouthguards please. We have started statistical investigations. These are student driven with students in pairs selecting a school issue they can collect data on. There have already seen some interesting questions posed. I am continuing with testing in both reading and maths. Your child should be able to talk to you about how they are going and what their strengths are. If you have any questions, queries or concerns feel free to me: tashg@normanby.school.nz or pop in. Have a great week. Tash

Room 7 Hello everyone. I will be out of the classroom for part of Wednesday and Mrs van Rooyen will be teaching the class. During maths we have been working on solving problems using different strategies. Some students are getting skilful at using basic facts, doubles and skip counting while others are counting on and some are counting all the objects. While some strategies are more efficient than others, all students are learning to be successful problem solvers. The majority of the class have been very successful with their Friday spelling tests so thank you for your support with this. Have a great week, Mandy mandyg@normanby.school.nz Room 8 Tena Koutou Well week 10 already. Camp next week! Congratulations to everyone involved in The Southern Shield Rugby League tournament last week at Hawera Primary School. You all represented Normanby School admirably and should feel very proud of yourselves, especially those of you who had never played any type of full contact sport before. Cheers to Karlin and Foma i for coaching the teams, you guys are both fantastic role models for the students. Finally thanks to all of the parents, friends and whanau who supported the students throughout the tournament. Normanby has three teams entered in the Rippa Rugby tournament on Wednesday, please feel free to come along and support the students. They have been putting in a lot of effort in training and are looking pretty sharp. A couple of reminders: please keep up with the home learning and get your child to organise themselves early for camp. Sleeping bags, warm clothing, etc. Remember this is Taranaki, there could be snow on the mountain or it might be a scorcher, or anywhere in between. Have a great week! Thanks, David

Room 3 Kids Corner We were given this photo as a picture to write about. Here are some of our thoughts about it. The monkey had a fat toe so he could step on the car and bash it. The people are still in the car and they are going to heaven. By Kahn-Jahmal The gorilla is breaking the car because the gorilla is naughty. Next the people are going to die. The gorilla is swearing at them. By Leshae I think the picture is about a giant gorilla that is angry so he is smashing the car. He is angry because he got hurt and he tripped over the car. I think next he is going to eat the car. By Levi I think the monkey wants to sit down on the car because his legs are sore. The man in the car is going to drive off and take the monkey to his house. By McKenna I think the gorilla wants to hop in the car because it wants a ride home. By Millah
