CLUB NEWSLETTER JUNE 2009 http.// COACH GETS SILVER! Congratulations this month goes to Coach Brian on attaining his Silver Licence under the Australian Coaching 5 level system. A Silver Licence (3 rd level) coach will focus on benchmarking, education and continuous improvement, promoting participation in competitive swimming at Country, State and above-level competitions, striving for performance and enjoyment to compete, development of the Club information, education and resources and business development of membership and participation. This is an outstanding accomplishment and Brian s next step is on to GOLD which can only be undertaken by approval from Swimming Australia Well done Coach Brian. Photos wanted get clicking. Our End of Season DVD this year will be edited and compiled by club member Derek Latocha. We are grateful for Derek offering to undertake this project and to make it a special memento of our year ahead we would love all members to get clicking and send the very best of your snaps to Derek on a regular basis for possible inclusion in the final product. We envisage the DVD covering all club related activities throughout the season, such as: Hell week Swim meets Club days Birthdays Other social events Images and video should not be restricted to swimmers only. It would be good to cover a wide range of subjects. Swimmers; in and out of the water at meets and training Swimmers; behind the scenes at meet Parents of swimmers; especially doing embarrassing things Club officials and committee members We require good quality images after each event to enable the DVD to be created as we go through the season to prevent any mad end of season rush. Derek will process and crop each selected image so members only have to provide the raw photo. Derek is happy to receive images via (dlatocha@tpg.com.au) provided they are compressed; otherwise images on disc or Derek will be available at some training sessions to directly transfer them from your camera to his laptop. 1

The inner workings of the swim club are contributed to by many people, some paid - others volunteers. Ultimately these people fall into three main areas which work on independent & specialised areas to make the club viable and sustainable. Though these groups work on independent areas there is constant liaison between the parties to ensure the interests of members are maintained. These three major groups are the Committee, the Coaches and Kiddieswim. The Committee is an annually elected group of parents / people associated with the club. The committees function is to make decisions on behalf, and in representation, of the club and its members. The extent of the committees jurisdiction is to issues pertaining to (but not limited to): Sponsorship Registration Discretionary fund management Event coordination Communication to members, Swimming Victoria and other third parties Provision of uniforms Fundraising If members have any issues pertaining to the above matters, please approach a committee member to discuss it further. Current representatives on the committee are Peter Schreiner, Jenny Boutland, Liz Mason, Flavio Santarossa, Mary Burton, Leanne Bradley, Lynne Sunderland, Rubin Thomas and Brian Rodriquez. Kiddieswim is a service provider and facilitator to the club. Kiddieswim holds the license to the pool and therefore provides the club with lane space. Kiddieswim is also responsible for the appointment of coaching staff, the staffing roster, the coach s performance reviews and their ongoing employment. Kiddieswim is also responsible for the determination & collection of all swim fees and maintenance of the facilities. Should a member have any problems with the scheduling of squads, the performance / provision of coaches, or matters pertaining to fees should be directed to Rubin Thomas at Kiddieswim. The final working part of the club structure is the Coach and assistant coaches. The Coach is 2
responsible for creating and implementing programs for the athletes. The Coach will, in consultation with Kiddieswim, determine the schedule of training and provided members with an outline of training expectations as well as competition opportunities. The Coach will also be responsible for determining possibilities (training or social) for the discretionary budget which will be put before the committee for final approval. The Coach will be the custodian of the clubs image, including the club uniform which must be submitted to the committee for approval. If members have any issues relating to the training regime, the competition schedule or matters relating to their child (injury, illness or otherwise), please approach a member of the coaching staff; namely Brian Rodriquez, Lee Grubb or Helen Sullivan. 4 Uniforms - Black Tracksuit Pants Eltham Swim Meet 12 July At the request of parents, it has been decided to bring in Flyers trackie pants. If you are interested in this idea, can you buy and wash whatever black trackie pants you have or want and bring them to the pool on the First Tuesday Night of next term i.e. Tuesday 14 th July. We will bring them to the screen printer and get the word Flyers printed down the leg i.e. like the Trigger pants. The cost will be about $5.00 per pant but this will be confirmed over the holidays. Please remember that this is an optional part of the club uniform.if there are any questions regarding the club uniform or you would like to place an order for hoodies, t-shirts or swim parkas and you are not at the pool over the holidays, please contact Jane Schreiner on General Items Hungry swimmers and parents on Club Day raised $119 through BBQ sales. Rob Parker, George Kambabarkis, and John Mason (Mace) Coach s Report What an amazing two months we have had. This weekend the Flyers headed off to their home away from home, MSAC for their first competition of the year. The last 8 weeks of work really paid off for all swimmers with 108 races and an amazing 82 PB s!! The great results didn t end there with 44 state qualifying times and 8 medals! There were some outstanding swims. A mention to Georgia Mason, Alex Voutier, Jack Waterfall, Nick Johnson, Niamh Bourke, Sam Russo and Mitch Hutton who all swam PB s of more than 10seconds. A special mention to Stephan Latocha who swam the biggest PB of the day: 27seconds! Medal winners for the club were Ben Schreiner, Hayden McGuigan and Georgia Mason. We also had some first time competitors Chelsea McGuigan and Stephanie Kambarbakis. Well done to all swimmers!! State Championships is only 10 weeks away Not long to go. The weekend s results show the work is paying off. Make sure we are getting to as many sessions as possible to give yourself the best chance of swimming to your potential. Best of luck to all swimmers competing at the upcoming State Open and SWD Championships. Keep up the great work See you all on deck Coach Brian This year the club will again be attending the Eltham Swim Meet. This is shaping to be the biggest meet of the year outside of State and National Championships and ALL club swimmers are required to attend. Be sure not to miss out!! See Coach Brian asap for what races to enter. Due to the size of the competition we will be running a few team exercises. These include: Searching for a club chant! We will be running a competition for a swimmer, or group of swimmers to come up with a short chant to be used at the meet. All entries must be in by Saturday July 25 th. Please Coach Brian with all your ideas. There will be a prize for the winner which will be presented on the day of the meet. We will also be having a nail painting day on the Saturday 22 nd August (the day before the meet) for all female swimmers. Stay tuned for more details The final activity for all swimmers to be involved in is making a sign/banner. Get together with your friends and make a big sign to hold up and/or wave when the Flyers are racing. This is sure to be an exciting day for all swimmers of every squad. There will also be extra incentive to swim fast More to come soon!! Speaking with the Coach Could all parents please be aware that during training the coaching staff is not in a position to have a conversation as they are focused on the swimmers in the pool? If you need to talk to the coaching staff please speak to them at the end of training. At times there are multiple squad training. Alternatively please or phone the coaching staff who are always more than happy to discuss your child s swimming. Competitions You know it s swimming time when the notice board is covered in swim meets. Last year we had so many people miss out on swim meets because they are full by the closing date. It is important to send your entries off as soon as they are posted to avoid missing out!! This season Swimming Victoria has changed its By-Laws: Clause has been updated to Entry times for long course events must have been achieved in a 50m pool. Entry times for short course events may be achieved in either a 4
50m or 25m pool. Converted entry times may not be used for entry into SV events. State Championships: This year Swimming Victoria is running with the same format of 12/U pre Christmas and the 13-18years post Christmas. Last year a large majority of the swimmers were not swimming at their optimum at State Long Course due to a big break post State Short Course. State Short Course is the checking point of the season with State Long Course being the main goal. This year there is only 15 weeks between the two events. I encourage all families and swimmers to take this into account when setting goals and targets for State Long Course. Remember double your time off just to return to your original fitness. E.g. 2 week break means 2 weeks off then another 4 to return to your original fitness and training levels which means only 9 weeks of preparation for State Long Course. You then need to factor in a taper week which cuts your prep time down to 8 weeks Can you race your best off 8 weeks of training? Reminders The latest news and results are available on Please check this regularly. All meets are posted on notice board in plenty of time. Ensure you do not miss out! (Far too many people have been missing out!!) Remember to check all events with coach before entering! Ensure you arrive at swim meets on time. Parents are to view training from the stand at the Secondary College pool only. Please read the club handbook. There is important information in regards to communication and expectation. If you have any issues or problems please speak to Coach Brian directly, and not to other parents. If you call the coach please leave a voic message if you would like your call returned. Please do not ask the coach for a lift as refusal may offend. Squad fees are due the first 4 weeks of term. Please ensure all fees are paid to Kiddieswim on time. (They are our premier partner ) For all squad related inquiries please speak to Coach Brian or Rubin Thomas (Kiddieswim). For all other enquiries e.g.: uniforms please speak to a committee member. Notes from Kiddieswim.. Hi all, just a few things to update you on as we approach Term 3. First off, the end of term marks the conclusion of the Dry-land programs evaluation period. Over this time, the club has subsidised the wage of qualified personal training staff to run the sessions and from all reports it has been a real success. We will be continuing the program in a slightly different format from third term. We will still be having a qualified trainer conducting both the Monday and Saturday sessions; however will have Brian as the second trainer on Saturdays. This move had to be made to reduce the cost associated with bringing the trainers in. Had it not been done, the Dry-land program would not be viable. To swimmers participating in Dry-land, the cost will be $4 per week. This is to be paid with the regular term fees and will be included on your invoice as a separate item. I would like to make clear that this is not a Kiddieswim decision, but a committee decision. The money we are collecting & subsequently paying out, in no way profits Kiddieswim we are merely facilitating the collection of the fee. To accommodate Brian s involvement with Dry-land, we have to re-assess the structure of the Saturday morning program. Ultimately we were face with a decision: 1) An assistant coach takes the Junior squad while Brian is absent or; 2) We move the Junior squad to a later start time so Brian can attend both. Based on feedback received when swimmers were attending Long Course training, we have opted for Option 2. As such the structure of Saturday mornings will be as follows: NATIONAL: 6:00-8:30 SWIM 8:45-9:45 DRYLAND STATE: JUNIOR: 6:15-8:30 SWIM 8:45-9:45 DRYLAND 9:45-11:15 SWIM 11:30-12:00 DRYLAND DEVELOPMENT: 8:30-9:45 SWIM We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause, particularly given the previous schedule that was issued. However, we trust you understand how we have arrived at this decision and the considerations we have made along the way. Finally, a brief notice regarding holiday training. Some questions have been raised regarding holiday training and associated costs. When we charge families their quarterly fees, it covers the expense 5
incurred for swimming during the term. As such, swimming during the holidays is an additional cost as we are required to pay our staff. If you are attending a regular training over the holidays, the fees are simply a regular weeks training. If you are attending a Hell Week, the fees are $55. Training will continue to be offered across the majority of holiday periods for National & State swimmers, with limited opportunities for Junior & Development swimmers. Please check the calendar for up to date information regarding Holiday swimming.
