4 4 Director s Message While the City wasn t directly impacted by the fires that began October 8, American Canyon residents continue to show their sense of community and support for our broader Napa County community. The willingness to help and outpouring of support our residents shown was amazing. When American Canyon High School was named as an evacuation center, we almost instantly had more volunteers than were needed, more donated supplies than were needed and thousands of dollars in gift cards for evacuees. The generosity and care is what makes our community so special. Your Parks and Recreation team supported these efforts during the fire. We had three staff leading the public information campaign. We supported the shelter operations, serving as a liaison from the city to the shelter. Finally, we partnered with the Boys and Girls Club to offer recreation programs for American Canyon children not in school. It was a difficult and trying time and your Parks and Recreation Department, like the community, we pitched in to help wherever we could. What we did pales in magnitude and depth compared to what our first responders and County managers persevered through during the tragedy. We owe them a debt of gratitude for the hard work, sacrifice and kindness. Personally, I would like to thank public safety personnel, especially American Canyon Fire Department, American Canyon Police Department, and public service staff and officials, especially Napa County Supervisor Belia Ramos and the rest of the Napa County staff and officials. Vision Statement We inspire fun, together we create community! Mission Statement The American Canyon Parks and Recreation Department is committed to creating enjoyable experiences for the community through outstanding events, programs, parks and facilities. Say Cheese! While in our parks and programs you and your children may be videotaped or photographed by a parks and recreation employee, volunteer or authorized photographer. Program registration and facility rentals serve as permission for use of your image by these parties. ICYMI (In Case You Missed It!) Sunrise/Moonrise Hike We had 30 participants hike out to Glass Beach to watch the sunset and watch the moonrise over the eastern hills on the way back to the parking lot. Coastal Clean-up Coastal Clean-up is a statewide campaign to clean up our waterways. In American Canyon, we had 175 volunteers (the most in Napa County!). We had several volunteer groups including ACHS students, Amcor, American Canyon Community Church, and local Boy and Girl Scouts. We covered almost 5 miles, and collected 260 lbs. of garbage, and 58 lbs. of recyclables for a total of 318 pounds of trash removed. Clean Sweep/Final Sweep The Clean Sweep was an effort to encourage our residents to dispose of unwanted items from their residences and inform them of opportunities to get rid of items throughout the year. It all culminated with the Final Sweep on September 30 where we collected and properly disposed of many tons of items UPCOMING Magic of the Season Please plan to attend the Holiday Tree Lighting on Friday, December 1 and Snow Day the following day, Saturday, December 2. Both events are at Shenandoah Park. Spring Events Get outside and have some fun at our annual Spring Celebration on March 24, and celebrate Earth Day at AmCan by the Bay on April 21. Futsal is also played with a smaller ball with less bounce than a regular football due to the surface of the field. The surface, ball and rules create an emphasis on improvisation, creativity, and technique as well as ball control and passing in small spaces. The league is run in partnership with AC Atletico FC.
