2 The Hereford centenary festival year has passed incredibly fast. The festival year gave us as Hereford breeders the opportunity to enjoy a good time together. The spectacle with 220 high quality Hereford animals that were shown at the Centenary s National Championship show in Moorreesburg has been widely praised. Once again, a big thank you to all the breeders who went through a lot of effort to prepare and show their animals. With the quality standard of the animals, all exhibitors participated largely to promote the Hereford breed. Many thanks also to those breeders who were only present as spectators. Your presence further contributed significantly in giving the celebrations the necessary prestige and making it a special event and opportunity to promote Herefords. Finally, a special word of thanks goes to my fellow councillors and staff who were directly involved with the arrangements, and whose dedicated hard work made the event a huge success. The Hereford breed has significantly lifted its stature during Auctions were supported better with higher prices being obtained. With the breed s quality and a combination of excellent balanced traits, we can build on these successes in The Hereford is used as one of the favourite cattle beef breeds in crossbreeding programs country wide and can be used very successfully on heifers. With promotional campaigns and articles there is a stronger focus again on the breed and will we continue to build on that. Thank you to our customers for your continued support in the past year. Our prayers go for rain in especially the drought-stricken areas. May you be blessed with prosperity and enough rain during this coming festive season. Die Eeufeesjaar het ongelooflik vinnig verby gegaan. Die feesjaar het vir ons die geleentheid gebied om as Herefordtelers lekker saam te kuier. Die skouspel met 220 Hereforddiere van hoogstaande gehalte het almal aan die praat en gelukwensinge stroom in. Weereens baie dankie aan al die telers wat die moeite gedoen het om hulle diere voor te berei en te skou by die Eeufeesjaar se Nasionale Kampioenskappe in Moorreesburg. Met die hoë-kwaliteit diere het alle uitstallers aansienlik bygedra om die Herefordras te bevorder. Baie dankie ook aan ons medetelers wat as toeskouers teenwoordig was. Julle teenwoordigheid het verder n groot bydrae gelewer om die vieringe die nodige prestige te gee en dit n ongelooflike geleentheid vir die Herefordras gemaak. Laastens, n spesiale woord van dank gaan aan my mede Raadslede en personeel wat direk met die reëlings gemoeid was, en met toegewyde harde werk die gebeurtenis n reuse sukses gemaak het. Die Herefordras het behoorlik sy statuur gelig gedurende Veilings is beter ondersteun met hoër pryse. Met die ras se goeie kwaliteit diere en n wye reeks gebalanseerde eienskappe, kan ons op hierdie suksesse voortbou in Die Hereford word as een van die voorkeur vleisbeerasse in kruisteelprogramme landwyd gebruik asook op verse. Met promosieveldtogte en artikels word die fokus weer sterker op die ras geplaas en sal hierop voortgebou word. Dankie aan ons kliënte vir jul volgehoue ondersteuning die afgelope jaar. 14 Greet & Meet The greet and meet was held on 5 September at Die Hut in Moorreesburg. Foreign visitors from Mexico, Australia and Canada and members joined for a pleasant dinner. Eeufeesvieringe Die Eeufeesvieringe het afgesluit met n dinee op 8 September in die Jan Basson saal in Moorreesburg. Ongeveer 200 lede, borge, kommersiële Hereford telers en Internasionale gaste het die spog geleentheid bygewoon. Pierre Vlok van BKB het n Hoorbeeld voorgedra en Apie Martiz en Wilhelm van Niekerk het later skou diere opgeveil. Die bul van Dr Carl Scholtz is verkoop aan Lodewyk Fourie Trust vir R Jose Bonica,die Sekretaris van die WHO het ook n praatjie gelewer en Wynand en Cheree het Vermaak verskaf. Die Genootskap was ook bevoorreg om oud telers Hans en Heide Köster by die verrigtinge te kon ontvang. Baie dankie ook aan Manjifiek vir die puik reelings met die Eeufeesvieringe. At the direction of Council, a WhatsApp group has been created called Young Hereford Breeders with the aim of getting more younger breeders involved with the Hereford breed. The group is merely a platform to share ideas, photos and get some camaraderie going between the future breeders of Hereford cattle in South Africa. The group can also serve as a platform to get ideas through to Council as to how we can grow the Hereford breed locally that would otherwise not get through to them via the main channels. The success of the group will be determined by the interaction of the members and is not intented as a platform to distribute information from the top downwards. Please send Carl Miles a message on to be added to the group or to recommend people that you would like to be added. The group in not necessarily restricted to current registered Hereford breeders and can include commercial cattle farmers and friends of our breed. There is no age limit to the word young so if you are young at heart and share a love for our breed you are also more than welcome! Regards, Carl

15 Beef Genomic PROGRAM - Este Van Marle-Köster The Beef Genomic Program is in the 3rd year of funding and will be completed 31 March 2018.To date, the BGP has been able to genotype bulls and cows from 13 beef breeds and as you may have seen in the news, the SA Bonsmara has managed to establish their reference population with more than 2000 genotypes. It is important to note that the Breed Society has made a substantial investment to achieve their target. SA Hereford will have approximately 300 genotypes by the end of March, In order to accelerate our progress with more genotypes, it would be advisable to explore all possible options for obtaining genotypes from international AI bulls and consider investing additional funds from the Breed Society/individual breeders. Possible steps for SA Hereford: 1. Contact the AHA, Canadian Hereford and any other Hereford Society where we have genetic linkage via AI over the past decade. 2. Negotiate to obtain the genotypes of these AI bulls consider purchasing these genotypes 3. Adding these genotypes will accelerate our potential progress towards generating GEBV s for SA Hereford 4. Check that the hard to measure phenotypes are recorded by the breeders Genomic research projects A project with the University of Pretoria will be completed in March 2018, where the student analysed available micro satellite and the genomic data from the BGP to estimate the genetic diversity in SA Herefords, inbreeding parameters and the population structure. The data is also compared with Hereford data from Ireland. This data will be available for publication in the Hereford Journal next year. We are still collecting phenotypes for the eye project the challenge is funding for the corresponding genotypes in order to take part in an international study. Breeders are encouraged to continue with phenotypic recording, especially the phenotypes that the Society signed up for in the BGP agreement, such as the mating lists. Next round of funding The BGP is preparing an expression of interest for a next round of funding during This will assist the smaller breeds such as the Hereford to continue building a reference population. It should be noted that in order to gain the most benefits from genomic selection, we need to focus on traits important to our breed. We should also note that breeds with larger numbers will have an advantage, except if we as breeders invest in more genotypes!
