2 PRESIDENT S REPORT The president and club members are very fortunate that the club has a committee which pro-actively works to strengthen the club. This work is not easy for a volunteer committee, when many sports-participants see clubs as just a service provider like a commercial gym. The sad part is that, one day, sports clubs may have to charge fees like gyms, perhaps $800 a year or $20 a visit. Last year, to encourage more Juniors into tennis and out of post-earthquake doldrums, Antoinette gained a substantial grant to fund FREE coaching to youngsters in the area. This was well received and our coach was able to boost the numbers of young players. Shane Tainui is one of the senior coaches in Canterbury and is very highly respected by other coaches. To encourage the growth of Junior tennis and help Shane build his own business, we are separating the coaching part from the general club subscription. You will see this in the next year s fees proposals. Shane offers first class coaching and will have more latitude to build his programmes and the skills of his pupils. On the courts, we can all see the new volleyboard and much praised deck. Alan Marshall and Greg Harding led the design and build of the deck, and we are very grateful to the colossal work put in by non-members (but parents of juniors), Paul Mainwaring and Mike Joblin. During the next year, the committee is going to review lights on Court 3 and re-surfacing courts 5 & 6. Several very hard working people are retiring from the committee this year. 'Life' member Pat Smith picked up the role of mid-week captain for 5 years (not for the first time) and is retiring. Angela Langley has been an excellent Secretary/treasurer for 5 years. On this year s accounts, the auditor Mark O Reilly commented The accounts are of a very high quality with good documentation and systems in place. David Collins has been a very involved and enthusiastic Club Captain but recently had major knee surgery. He is taking a short [hopefully] retirement. Financially, the club is in good health though could use a little more fat. Let s see what new names on the committee and renewed energy can bring in Thank you Clive Davidson Club captain report The Inter-club season went well with all teams performing well, though we would like to see more teams competing in the up-coming season. The format is now more social, with games played on club courts on Sundays. Winter and Summer Saturday tennis has been equally well attended, and most Saturday afternoons all 6 courts are active. There are always interesting match-ups; with the regular call you can t be serious, are you sure that was a double fault? With the new deck, we have tried to extend the hospitable side of tennis, with drinks and nibbles or BBQ. Winter tennis is normally fine, cool and with no wind! Come down and enjoy the courts. Following my knee operation, I am taking a short break from tennis and wish my successor all the best for the next Summer. David Collins Mid Week Report Mid-Week went very well this season with everyone enjoying their tennis and our tournaments were well attended. Our B Inter-club team did extremely well with only 3 losses during the season. Good to see some new members at midweek, we also enjoy the company of the men folk that come. I am retiring from mid-week captain this year and thank you all for your very co-operative support. Pam Ingramhas offered to guide Mid-week, hopefully again with the support of all mid-week players Pat. 3 Junior report (from Julie) The junior section of the club is doing well, we have had a small reduction in teams because, in part, all our troubles with the earthquakes. Canterbury Tennis has also been down on teams entering this past season. We have done well with our home courts still playable. Some courts at schools were damaged and we have managed, so well done everyone. We had six teams playing in the interclub finals with four teams winning. Membership overall is still good with Under 10 year olds on a Tuesday and social tennis on Saturday morning being enjoyed by many players. Winter tennis coaching is going very well. Lots of players are taking this opportunity to improve their skills over winter. We look forward to the new season and seeing you all back again. Interclub Finals We had 6 teams playing in the Canterbury interclub finals. 4 teams won their grades. It was wonderful to have a very large crowd at the club on Sat morning. 4 FUNDRAISING REPORT 2012 The Club received three grants during the 2011/12 season. $4000 from the Christchurch City Council Small Projects Fund towards Junior Administration expenses, $5000 from NZCT for special winter junior coaching programme (free to non members and members) and $6480 From New Zealand Community Trust for Junior Coaching February/March/ April Club Fundraising was active throughout the season with 3 Bunnings BBQ days raising $ , Xmas Raffle $346.96, Social Funds $ , Book Sales $581 and Group Court Hire $ This steady income enabled us to totally fund the new Volley Board $1500 and Deck $4500. The Committee is currently in the process of reviewing projects for the 2012/13 season. We have already applied to CCC for Jnr Admin expenses and will formulate a plan of action for grants towards upcoming projects which will include junior coaching and remedial work to Courts 5 & 6. Facilities Coordinator s Report for 2011/12 There were two major projects in , the replacement of the volleyboard and the extension of the decking. Volley Board Replacement A replacement volleyboard was designed and built in October 2011 by club volunteers (Alan, Clive, David, Antoinette and Stuart). The volleyboard is 6m wide by 2.4m high, and is made up of 5 sheets of 2.4m x 1.2m x 28mm marine ply. The board is fully sealed, almost as solid as a block wall, and has been constructed to last 20 to 30 years. Overall cost was $1,500. Front Deck Extension This was designed and built by club volunteers in February/March/April Special thanks to Greg Harding, Paul Mainwaring for the huge amount of work they put into this, supported by Mike Joblin (a real builder) Alan, David, Clive, Stuart and Antoinette. Special thanks also to Mike Radford for the loan of the concrete mixer and post hole digger, and to Paul s employer, Mitek, for the very substantial donation of fixings. Photo shows the half-finished deck on St Patricks Day Planned Projects for 2012/13 1. Replace the damaged windows on the NE wall of the clubrooms. 2. Investigate providing floodlights for Court 3 (on the existing poles). 3. Investigate different gate access systems. 4. Investigate the costs of installing in the clubrooms a security camera(s) and/or a monitored burglar alarm. 5. Re-surfacing courts 5 and 6 Alan Marshall Facilities Coordinator 2011/12

5 Treasurers Financial Report For The Year Ending 30 th April 2012 The financial report for the Avonhead Tennis Club has been audited and this report can be read in conjunction with the audit report obtained by Ainger Tomlin. At the end of the financial year the club showed a paper loss of $8,024.00, but if depreciation is excluded, the club would have made a $7, profit. Grants Received This Year: NZ Community Trust Winter Coaching $5, CCC Junior Administration $4, NZ Community Trust - Coaching $6, Total Grants Received $15, The Balance Sheet shows a bank balance of $16, New development (show on assets register) Volley Board$1, Deck Extension $3, The club has had a stable year financially, due to grants received, and the success of the Bunning BBQ s and the time given by club members to help build the volley board and deck extension. Grants are becoming harder to obtain, and the club still needs to look at ways to increase revenue and membership to remain a viable club.
