2 NORTHERN SUBURBS TENNIS ASSN - HISTORY- Late 1870s: Tennis came to the North Shore, played on lawns of some of the bigger homes in the area 1915: The Association originated but soon folded due to WWI 14 March 1921: Northern Suburbs Lawn Tennis Assn was formed by 11 members of the previously unsuccessful Association 7 May 1921: First competition held, a mixed, in which Artarmon participated 1927: Headquarters consisted of 2 hired courts at the corner of Ernest and Sophie Streets, Crows Nest and Committee formed to acquire land to build courts. Levy of one penny per member was imposed to help raise funds 1928: Land in Wheatleigh St, Naremburn purchased for 706 pounds 11 shillings 1929: Loan obtained and 3 courts and clubhouse built costing 674 pounds Alf List was building operations supervisor. Courts first used on 21 st September 1932: 2 more courts were built and clubhouse extended 1934: Lights installed on court 1 15 January 1935: Mortgage discharged and centre valued at 1,750 pounds 1935: 186 affiliated clubs and 3,000 registered players : WWII caused sharp drop in numbers, and courts and clubhouse deteriorated 1949: Courts were top dressed and clubhouse renovated by volunteers 1960: Levy of one pound per player was imposed to raise funds to build a new clubhouse at cost of 7,000 pounds - opened 30 th April : Northern Suburbs Tennis Club Limited was formed to raise capital to fund 8 court complex on Crown Land at Talus Street, Naremburn 5 April 1978: 20 year lease signed with Willoughby Council for Talus St 14 September 1979: Tender accepted for construction of courts, fencing, drainage, lighting etc totaling $146, June 1980: Courts became operational 24 April 1986: Clubhouse was completed 1986: Full time administrator appointed and northern boundaries extended to Ryde Road and Mona Vale Road 11 April 1988: Association became incorporated 1988: Wheatleigh Street courts resurfaced with synthetic grass, lighting upgraded and new fences constructed 1989: Wheatleigh Street clubhouse renovated 1990: Talus Street courts resurfaced with synthetic grass 1995: Talus Street clubhouse extended 2000: Talus Street courts resurfaced 2004: Wheatleigh Street courts resurfaced and clubhouse refurbished 2008: Talus Street clubhouse refurbished 2010: Talus Street courts resurfaced 23

The Association supports a Club system and new players to the Association, seeking weekend competition or social tennis, are advised to contact any of the Clubs listed later in this Calendar, to ascertain which Club offers the most appropriate and suitable facilities. Each Club differs in that some operate Saturday afternoons only, others Saturdays and Sundays, whilst others may offer services throughout the entire week. Membership in Clubs may also vary in ages and standards, so new players are advised to ascertain if the Club is suitable to their needs and maybe even visit the Club to observe first hand. Club membership fees are extremely reasonable and also vary in inclusions. Club members wishing to compete in competition tennis are supplied with partners of similar standard, courts, reserves, etc. Once teams are selected, Clubs then enter them in competitions that the NSTA conducts. Clubs are obliged to provide players details so that the NSTA can register competition players with Tennis NSW, providing personal insurance and eligibility to enter sanctioned tournaments. Club life offers great enjoyment for players of any age and standard and can provide wonderful social opportunities through tennis, social functions and friendships. Juniors understanding the system and knowing where to start are sometimes daunting tasks to new junior players and non tennis parents. The following information may assist in making a start: Tennis is controlled in New South Wales by Tennis New South Wales and all players competing in NSTA competitions and tournaments are registered, as required, with TNSW. TNSW can provide information on tournaments, events, squads, coaches and a wide range of information and may be contacted on: or The natural progression for juniors is: Coaching: Learning the basics of the game either in private or group lessons. The coach must have a good rapport with the child so that learning is fun and informative. Starting age is dependent on skill and concentration levels. Competition: When a child can keep score and is able to serve over-arm with reasonable consistency, he/she is ready for competition tennis. Most competitions are divided into grades or divisions, so that there is a level suitable for everyone. Tournaments: Round robins are best suited to young juniors (12 years and under). Many appropriate junior tournaments are held throughout the Metropolitan area and the State on weekends and during school holidays. The TNSW website has a calendar of tournaments with contacts, or players may enter online. Squads: Many coaching schools run squads of various standards and TNSW and NSW Hardcourt Tennis Assn also run squads for more talented juniors. Clubs: Club tennis offers great opportunities for juniors, competing and socializing among players of all ages and skills. 3
