Kitigan Zibi receives no funding and depends on many volunteers and ticket sales to obtain enough financial support to keep our Pow Wow going year after year. This year there are the Cash Draw tickets being sold for $5.00 each and Branchaud s furniture store has generously donated a 43 HD Plasma TV, tickets for the TV are $2.00 each or 3 for $5.00 Please support Kitigan Zibi s Traditional Pow Wow by purchasing lots of these fundraising tickets. For more information contact Karen Buckshot at BUILDING PROPERTY WANTED Urgently looking for land to build on, if you have a small piece of property for sale please call Kris or Daniel at BUSH FIRE HAZARDS This is to remind all our community members to be extra careful during dry hot weather. Fires catch very quickly and can spread throughout the area. Bushfires can be caused by leaving a fire unattended at a camp or barbeque, having an open fire on a dry windy day, the glass from a bottle or mirror can cause a small flame to become a wildfire, a cigarette flicked out of a vehicle, a match that has not been put out and dropped on the ground and flammable chemicals that are left in the sun. Please exercise extra caution this summer to prevent needless fires.

18 Kiweda is celebrating its 20 th Year Anniversary Thanks to a group of dedicated community members who had the vision and goal of providing a valuable service to our community members, Kiweda was first constructed in A service intended to allow our elders the comfort and assurance of being cared for by our people in Kitigan Zibi. Thus, the word Kiweda, so appropriately named. Today, in 2012, that goal is still has not changed and that is to keep our Anishinabe people home in Kitigan Zibi for as long as we can. As a community, we should be very proud to be able to say that we have a senior home since there are only eight (8) in the province of Quebec. It must be acknowledged that in order to provide the quality care that our elders deserve it takes more than shelter. It takes dedicated and special people to accomplish this. It takes support and commitment by staff which I have been privileged with receiving throughout the years as a Supervisor. With this thought, I would like to take this opportunity to say Mìgwech to the past, present and future team at Kiweda and recognize the dedicated service provided by the many. We have grown together in many ways and know that we will continue to create memories for many years to come. It is an honour. 38 2012 Kitigan Zibi Anishinabeg Band Council Nominee Samantha Tenasco Kwey Kwey Anishinabeg, With great appreciation, I wish to thank my competitor Joel Odjick and Charlene McConini Mitchell for nominating me for band council. I am Samantha Tenasco, a 27 years old young adult and single parent of a 7 year old daughter. My parents are Jenny Buckshot and Sammy Tenascon. I live in Kitigan Zibi and share a home with my daughter on Paganakomin Mikan. I am a post secondary student who is finishing up a Bachelor of Arts degree in Law (Legal Studies) and Indigenous Studies at Carleton University. I moved back to KZA in 2011 after living 10 years in Ottawa Gatineau, more specifically in Vanier, Ottawa s crime ridden neighborhood while in college and university. I work for Kitigan Zibi on short contracts currently. During my childhood, I spent a lot of time between Kitigan Zibi and Syracuse, a common experience for many Kitigan Zibi members. I have thick skin from spending half my life off reserve and adapting to different environments, fending for myself and my child. I am seeking election because I want to see a vibrant, healthy community again. I want the best for our children, including fostering Algonquin language learning, sports development and career training for youth. I want to see opportunity for our kids, and I know we are on the right track with youth program delivery.. Let s build on it and make this a safe place where young Algonquin Anishinabeg minds develop and prosper into the future. Skills that I can contribute to the new council are taking initiative in business studies, perspective on the aboriginal law, aboriginal history, critical thinking in aboriginal politics, and just being a proud parent of child who is learning our language. I communicate well with the public. I have previous college level education in Business Administration Human Resource Management and Aboriginal Studies, always an asset. I think Anishinabe and I intend on working for the Anishinabeg people. Many people might not know that I volunteer coordinate a broomball club for young girls here in KZ during the winter months. It is sport that is still played in every other Algonquin nation community in Quebec. Broomball nearly went extinct here in Kitigan Zibi Anishinabeg. I have to give a shout out for my broomball fundraising team while I have everyone s attention! We re raffling off 3 Chateau Logue Hotel, Golf, Dinner and Massage packages valued at $ for $5.00 per ticket! Band Council elections aside, I am truly optimistic about these broomball girls, it is going to be an awesome season. Also, see our KZ Girls Broomball fundraising food booth at Kitigan Zibi Traditional Pow Wow and help our 30 girls get jerseys and gain funds for tournament travel. Please have a look at selected topics that I feel strongly about over the next two pages Samantha Tenasco, 2012 Kitigan Zibi Anishinabeg Band Council Nominee Page 1
39 The following points are items that I feel strongly about and would gear my position to on council if elected: Language and Culture are very important and dear to me as Mokasige alumni, fortunate to be a conversational speaker of Kitigan Zibi s Algonquin language dialect. Our language has to be protected, encouraged and welcomed again in every corner of the community. Housing, Economic Development and Employment are a concern of most community members in Kitigan Zibi. It will be a priority for me. We have to be innovative to strengthen and build our economy, increase housing and reach target goals on employment. I would like to see greater accountability and communications in reporting to the community. We should know about band council resolutions that are in discussion and passed on our behalf. We need more disclosure from our council. A forensic audit would be helpful. A comprehensive audit of all spending from the trust fund held by Indian Affairs for Kitigan Zibi Anishinabeg since its inception. Most of us know it exists, but how is it being used? How can we access it? I also want to see utility analysis of spending and focus on future business development. I would also like to see a change in how band meetings are conducted. Currently, only 1% of the community, roughly 30 people attend these meetings. I attend band meeting frequently. Most times, I attend just to make the elders laugh and offer different insight on subjects. Often times I am the youngest person in that hall. I think having focus groups discussing a set of issues on the agenda is an alternative solution. The outcome of the focus groups was the most productive band meeting in years with everyone present actively participating. It would not be a top down arrangement, staring at the table for 3 hours. It was a great way to work together, inform and gives council members the opportunity to listen to the different perspectives of Kitigan Zibi Anishinabeg at a closer range. A modernization of the economic development policy. It is currently stalled with lack of vision, drive and resources. It will require a lot of the new council s time if we intend to strengthen our economy. Implementing an Economic Development Corporation. Start the ground work for our own bank in Kitigan Zibi. Review of different angles or policies within the community that could be hindering the economic future of Kitigan Zibi. Finding other ways for Kitigan Zibi Band to become investors in individual businesses. Making moves in International Business. Looking into Foreign Direct Investment from nations like China, India and some of the Arab nations. I see opportunity. In many ways, we are a tiny nation, coming out of British colonization much like a developing country. Samantha Tenasco, 2012 Kitigan Zibi Anishinabeg Band Council Nominee Page 2
40 The story of the Highway 105 expropriation of Kitigan Zibi is intriguing to me, as many people see toll booths as a viable way to create wealth in the short term for our community. It is important to document oral history of the injustices that changed the face our community. Our golden aged community members know this story. I would like to study the business viability of a Hotel, Golf and Casino resort in Kitigan Zibi. We need a sustainable economic development to increase employment. We need to create 300 seasonal and full time jobs in the next 5 years. I fully understand that cutbacks from the Conservatives will continue to affect us. Realistically, we cannot expect any new funding flowing at the rates of decades past and should plan ahead for further cutbacks. Any new funds will have to be earned in our own business ventures. Any new council member has to be aware of this going in. It will be tight fiscally and there is much work to be done to make up lost time. I am concerned about to financial sustainability of Wazason Daycare and Cultural Centre. I believe if there is a will, there is a way to keep these buildings in operation. Revitalization of sport teams in Kitigan Zibi for all ages and breaking ground on our dream of the Sports Complex. Increasing activities in arts, culture and athletics for community members 22 to 55 year olds. There are plenty of elder care programs and the youth programs are impressive of late. I would like to increase activities and workshops for the adult population. Algonquin history, lands, title, current events, and sovereignty are strong subjects of mine. I do a lot of research on these subjects in academia, as we need to know our past to step into the future. I would like to expand on the long term vision and strategic design for our future. There is a lot of useful input by our community members to work by. It is a pathway for success. Last but not least, I believe the Algonquin women should regain their roles as the true leaders of this community. In conclusion, I would like to say that I have hope for healthy, sustainable, independent Kitigan Zibi and I want to serve my community into the future. Everything we do now is for the next seven generations of Anishinabeg people. I love this place. It is a challenge I am up for! I can be reached at s_tenasco@hotmail.com, by Facebook, or you can reach me on my cell phone if you would like to share comments or have questions. It s an Ottawa cell number, but I m in Kitigan Zibi. Misaye! Migwech Kakina. Samantha Tenasco, 2012 Kitigan Zibi Anishinabeg Band Council Nominee Page 3
