Hawthorn came out strong and put on the pressure early but our defence was able to soak it up and find gaps in their midfield to get the ball moving. Once we were settled the team worked hard for each other and was able to move the ball around quickly. This resulted in a lot of penalty corners, which one was finally converted by Kat just before half time. Again the second half was much the same, we had a lot of possession and corners but Hawthorn kept the ball out. Until finally El had a shot from a corner cross the line, but was unfortunately disallowed. Some great work from our defence to keep Hawthorn goalless was mainly due to Emily in goal. The defence worked hard to prevent corners and some fantastic pressure from the forward line in Giselle and Rach H to tackle back - an amazing team effort this week with everyone working hard for each other. Doncaster looked worried on the sideline - and so they should be. This will be the 3rd final in 3 yrs for this team - will Wendy make it 3 from 3?
3 WPB Training Session After winning the semi-final and sealing a grand final spot, at Laura's request so she only had to travel once from her new home in Sydney, the WPB girls thought they scored a week off...wrong!! Coach Kylie had the girls out on a very windy Sunday morning, training. It was clear it was business as usual. The team worked on movement and working off the ball, and Kylie showed us she 'still had it' hammering balls at Lexi to keep her busy. Moving to shootouts, where captain Orla showed us she can score goals as well as she can defend them, the girls tried different tactics for their 8 seconds of one on one glory so as not to be so predictable, but also to see what works best - we found it s pretty hard to practice these with your own keeper, who has spent 18 rounds watching from the goal how you play so knew what you were going do, the best tactic was decided...let's just not let it get to shootouts! Corner practice saw Krystle earn the title of AV chick, as the official training videographer and commentator (to keep her involved while she rests her 'diving shoulder'). Going through the corners, Kate's precision on number one strike made the backboard shudder, and Anna wasn't going to let Kate be the only one to strike, firing her own past Lexi. With the addition of some defenders, Sarah was ready for the deflection and swept one in. To finish off the girls did some strokes and the AV chick became umpire chick. After a round of scoops, sweeps, and flicks which Lexi did a great job defending, the girls headed to 'drugstore espresso' for a well-earned brunch. Look at these happy girls! Doesn t look like protein shake to me Krystle. Well Done Team!! MPB vs Waverley Preliminary Final Last weekend MCC Men's Pennant B headed out to Monash for a replay of round Our semifinal vs. Waverley. With the previous game requiring an EPIC comeback from 0-3 down, only to win 4-3, we knew we had our work cut out for us. Buoyed by the Women's Pennant A team just getting up 0-1 in the game before ours, we literally could not wait to get out of the change rooms and take to the field (although I suspect Marty may have had a hand in that as well). Based on our last game, we expected Waverley to come out at us hard... only the opposite happened. Clearly still rattled from our last encounter, we seized control of the game from the time the whistle left the umpires mouth. It was glorious hockey. We looked dangerous. Very Dangerous. DEMON dangerous. Despite some great opportunities (including a cracking attempt at a diving goal by Liam), and limiting them to maybe 3 real chances, we went into half time at 0-0. The second half started differently... with Waverley dictating play and looking the more threatening side with some solid play and a few close calls. Things were not looking good... And then. It happened. I would argue it was against the flow of play. With Johnny smoking three opposition players with skill and pace down the right, he thumped a diagonal cross across the face of goals... right into the path of his Silkiness, Duncan McLeary, for a deft deflection in. BAM. I suspect the keeper may still be standing out at Monash trying to figure out what happened. As the clock ticked down, desperation began to creep in to the Waverley game. Even with some of their players green carded they came at us hard, even substituting the keeper off the field in an attempt to force a shootout. Nervous moments in the final minutes of the game with yours truly forced to make a couple of saves before the sweet sweet sound of the full-time whistle.
4 End result: MCC 1 (pronounced "won") to Waverley 0 (as in number of goals I let in). BOOM. Grand Final. Speaking of which, I've been tasked with the pre-game and half-time pep talk for the GF as Doc unfortunately can't be there. Big shoes to fill. But the same can be said for every man on our team. Cam. Kimber. ANYONE who was a part of MCC Men's Pennant B team in And like any good team does. Like we DO. We step up, step in, and get the job done. We've got a job to do. Bring it Camberwell. Feedback Please drop an to Sarah Haouchar if there are any issues in regards to the Off the Bench newsletter or other social media (Facebook or Instagram). All feedback welcomed. hao039@hotmail.com Please send match reports to: hao039@hotmail.com NOTICE BOARD Team Photos Thank you to all the teams who have sent in their team photos, however there are still a few to come. Please make sure to get those missing photos in now. Please send to: hao039@hotmail.com Team Equipment The Committees would very much appreciate it if all practice balls, match balls and first aid kits are returned to the pavilion, ASAP.
