3 Remember why we play A reminder from the Committee to all players, coaches, officials and supporters. We all participate in Hockey for enjoyment, please be respectful to all, on and off the pitch. Thank you MATCH REPORTS MPLR vs Waverley Rd 6 Fresh off a disappointing second half against Essendon, the MCC Premier League Reserve Team were raring to go against a Waverley team that s been up and about this year. The legerity brought by the return of key veteran midfielder, Colin Edwards, and the imported skills of Brian O'Malley from Ireland were set to bring some stability to the MCC line-up. The first half was tightly contested with both teams starting the game cautiously. The deadlock was broken 20 minutes into the game when Ray Smith was able to strike the ball into the back of net. A few minutes later the Waverley team were able to respond with a drag-flick past the MCC Goalkeeper, Patrick Sanders. The teams went into half time 1-1 with all to play for in the second half. The MCC team weren t able to control any significant portions of the second half. Turn-overs from MCC and the team s lack of pressure on the ball carrier meant that Waverly were able to dominate the second half. With 15 minutes to go an MCC defender gave away a stroke which was converted by Waverley to bring the score to 2-1. With MCC pushing to claw back a goal late in the game another turn-over was costly and Waverley were able to capitalise with a quick transition into the goal to leave the final score as 3-1 to Waverley. MPB vs Doncaster Rd 6 Pennant B Men travelled out to Doncaster for a top of the table clash with the men in green and yellow. A tough start for MCC when both Duncan Silky McLeary and Mark Chappy Carpenter succumbed to injury mid-way through the first half. This left us with the bare 11 and were 1-0 down going into half time. Renewed focus and energy at the start of the second half saw us fight back with a PC goal from Ang Romas. MCC continued to tough it out with some outstanding saves from Ryan Turk and focused defence from Marty Rowe, Ryan Gration, Cam Jansen, Cian Hutter and JJ Porrins. However, the lack of a bench and lapses in concentration told in the final 5 minutes with Doncaster scoring two goals and taking the game 3-1. The boys took a lot out of the game and are keen to get back on the winning side when we come up against Powerhouse this week at the SNHC. MPD vs Doncaster Rd 6 MPD packed their sticks and passports for an away game against top of the table Doncaster at Yarra Valley Grammar School in Croydon. Despite beginning the round in 8th position, the game was quite evenly matched, with MCC looking strong with a 1:1 half-time score. Ultimately a 2:2 draw resulted as MPD failed to capitalise on a series of penalty corners late in the second half. MPE vs Footscray Rd 6 We travelled to Footscray to play the ladder leaders. We did not start very well and were 3-0 down at half time and we decided that it was time to show everyone how we could really play Hockey. Our defence with James Kelsall, Lachie Fergusson, Jeetu, Cam Evans, Gary March and Lachie O Sullivan was very solid and Ant Hocking making a great save from a penalty stroke which put us back into the game. Our mid field of Michael Lister, Cougar, Will Cranwell gave our forwards plenty of ball. Goals, which were vreated from a great team effort, were scored by Jonny McMahon, James Barnett and Tim Martin. Our
4 other forwards in Ryan and Josh gave great purpose and attack. We were only 2-3 down with 10 minutes to go and keep attacking them. Even when we were down to 10 men in the last 5 minutes and they scored to go to 2-4 we did not give up and brought the score back to 3-4, we kept trying to find the equaliser right until the end of the game. The end result was a 3-4 loss. The endeavour shown by the team was awesome and the attitude was excellent. We just need to sort our first half out. We look forward to a similar attitude and approach for next week. WPL vs Waverley Rd 6 After a string of games where things hadn't quite gone their way the Dees were looking to turn their fortunes around and put their season back on track. The game started brightly for the Dees and an early Waverley corner came somewhat against run of play, MCC however kept Waverley out and regrouped. On the counter attack of their own they earned a well-deserved corner through a great piece of individual skill from Carla Bond. Despite a few nervy moments they refocused and kept their heads, despite pushing for that elusive first goal they couldn't capitalise and break the deadlock, the first half finishing 0-0. MCC looked sharper and more consistent after the break and continued to pile on pressure with a glut of short corners. Waverley however continued to push for a winner themselves and had a few counter attacks and corners of their own, however the MCC defenders stood firm with Claire Alexander producing a string of decisive tackles to mop up any Waverley pressure. With the MCC supporters on a knife edge on the sidelines cheering the girls on for a win they were rewarded with 15 minutes to go when the deadlock was finally broken; Laura Castleden scoring from a short corner. MCC then turned the screw looking for a second goal and proceeded to camp in Wavelery's half for the remainder of the game but it wasn't to be and the game finished 1-0. WPB vs Footscray Rd 6 After three away games in a row, it was good to be back at our home ground with the return of our captain Orla from injury. Footscray are always a tough competitive team and this week was no different. Both teams came out strong but it was our great passing from the back line all the way up the field that lead to a great goal by Liz. This gave us the confidence and a slight edge over Footscray to keep on top of them till half time. Both teams pushed for domination in the 2nd half and a conversion off a short corner by Isabelle to put us 2-0 up sealing the game for us. Footscray finished strong but our defence led by Lexi in the net fought hard to keep a clean slate. Another win and another jump up the ladder, currently 2nd place and climbing! Masters 35+ BSE vs Croydon Ranges A road trip out to Ringwood in NSW (well it almost is) was what we found ourselves with on Monday evening. It was at least 3 degrees colder than in the city, and everyone had noticed, we ll all except our fill-in goalkeeper Cormac. He was keeping warm in his gear and diving around the circle, rather than playing out field and freezing with the rest of us, as he would normally have been doing. The main plan for the game was to ensure that Wazzer (playing for the opposition) didn't score against us. This plan was achieved, unfortunately his team mates managed to slip a couple past us, and so we had the long journey home to reflect on what could have been...and to warm up. Next week it will be different... Please send through match reports to: hao039@hotmail.com The Dees will be looking to take the winning feeling into next week's game and reignite their season, bring on the next round!
