2 The Society of Old Brentwoods Ashwells Road BRENTWOOD CM5 9SE affiliated to the Essex County Football Association By the spring of 999, Brentwood Ursuline had decided that the school could no longer support football's rapid growth and the decision was taken to form an independent club which also took on board the girls' team from Brentwood Boys for the best interests of female football in the area. members of the Eastern Region Women s Football League The focus has now moved to a successful Ladies side, secretary Ian Bent ( ) (ian.bent@essexfa.com) chairman David Worsfold ( ) (david.worsfold@zen.co.uk) treasurer John Lovell ( ) (johnhlovell@o.co.uk) press & publicity Robert Craven ( ) (robertcraven73@hotmail.com) first team manager Ian Bent assistant managers Lucy Faraday & David Worsfold club captain Carla Rose honours ERWFL Division One South Runners-Up 009/0 ERWFL Plate Competition Winners 007/8 who compete in the Eastern Region Women's Football League (ERWFL) having claimed successive promotions from the Essex County Women's League in 003 and 004. Having finished fifth in their first season, 005/6 saw Brentwood reach the play-off finals as they pushed for promotion from Division One East. Town could not quite reach the top tier, and subsequent seasons saw the club narrowly miss out again having been placed fourth in 007 and then third in consecutive campaigns within the newly-realigned Division One South. There was some success in 008 as the Ladies won their first major trophy, scooping the ERWFL Plate Competition courtesy of a 4- victory over Kings Sports, as well as consecutive runs to the Third Qualifying Round of the FA Women s Cup. After the departure of coach Kevin Anderson at the end of the 008/9 campaign, 009/0 dawned with a new management team in place, headed by Ian Bent. Ably assisted by David Worsfold and Lucy Faraday in his backroom team, Bent tasted success at the end of his first term in charge as Blues finally claimed that elusive promotion spot, completing the campaign as runners-up to Arlesey Town. 00/ now sees the Club competing in the ERWFL Premier Division for the first time in their history. Back row (l-r): Ian Bent (manager), Nicole Manning (vice-captain), Emma Hooker, Danielle Butler, Dominique Hume, Kelly Walker, Izzy Vian, Sarah Murphy, Nicola Murphy, Jess Tuffen, Lucy Faraday (player/assistant manager) Front row (l-r): Keeley Walker, Olivia Worsfold, Sophie Lovell, Nikita Whinnett, Nikki Allen, Carla Rose (captain) Inset (l-r): Toni Brown, Leah Cowan, Kerri Thomas, Stacey Turner, David Worsfold (assistant manager); Not shown: Bryony Lynch Brentwood Town Ladies FC was formed in 999 following the merger of Brentwood Ursuline FC and Brentwood Girls FC. The Ursuline Convent High School had been running teams in the BRENTWOOD TOWN town since 99 and by 998/9 had entered three teams into the Essex County Girls League LADIES FC whilst Brentwood Boys had also launched a girls team in 997. btlfc history

We hope that the visiting players, coaches and supporters enjoy their visit to Essex today. We have now reached the halfway stage of our first season in the Premier Division of the Eastern Region Women s Football League and to sit second in the table and only a point of the top spot is a fantastic start. The way in which everyone connected to the club, but especially the players, have approached the season, and the effort and spirit on display each week, has been there for all to see. We must all now focus on our aim to be just as competitive in the second half of the season. Today s game sees us take on a strong Tottenham Hotspur side who are also going well in their league. We met each other in a very competitive pre-season friendly back in August and anyone who watched the game that night and some of the football welcome produced by both teams would not be surprised to see how well both clubs have started in their respective leagues. The game that evening was a real test for us and we learnt a lot that night which has stood us in good stead this season. Hopefully this afternoon s game will be equally entertaining and will give us an opportunity to see the progress we have made over the last three months, and we ll be giving it our best. Finally I would like to say a massive thank-you to everyone attending today s game and supporting the girls. It means a lot to everyone at the club and I hope you all enjoy your afternoon with us. May the best team win. Enjoy the match! 4 match report Hutton (Farmer 6, Cliffe 48) Brentwood Town 3 (Rose, Whinnett 43, 90+3) match photos Emma Cansell before driving her seventh goal of the season underneath goalkeeper Melanie Kinsella. The FA Women s Cup sponsored by E.ON Second Qualifying Shenfield High School on Sun 4 Oct 00 The lead lasted just five minutes as the previously-unbeaten Eastern Region Women s Football League Division One South side equalised from a set-piece. A free-kick was conceded 5 yards out and Nicole Farmer strode up from the back to float the ball over Izzy Vian and into the net. Town: Izzy Vian, Emma Hooker, Sarah Murphy (Jess Tuffen 76), Kelly Walker, Nikki Allen, Sophie Lovell, Nikita Whinnett, Lucy Faraday, Danielle Butler (Bryony Lynch 63), Carla Rose, Leah Cowan. Substitutes not used: Dominique Hume, Keeley Walker, Toni Brown. The match became scrappy as Hutton pressurised the ball, and Brentwood struggled to gain any real momentum, leading to opportunities for the hosts Amy Simmons and Lucy Hudson, who was twice thwarted by Vian. Brentwood Town dug in to earn a place in the Third Qualifying Round of the FA Women s Cup sponsored by E.On with a 3- victory away to local rivals Hutton courtesy of an injury-time winner from Nikita Whinnett. At times Blues failed to match the high standards of previous games in 00/ but they displayed a lot of guts and determination to overcome a spirited Hutton side that refused to lay down despite trailing twice, to strikes from Carla Rose and Whinnett in the first half. We weren t at our best today, and it s probably as poorly as we have played all season, but everyone kept going and got the result to put us in the next round. A sign of a good team is winning when you are not at your best, and we did that today, so credit to the players for that, reflected manager Ian Bent. Club captain Rose put her side in front just 54 seconds into the game after a high clearance was contested by Whinnett in midfield. The forward s presence was enough to put off Nina Witteridge and the loose ball fell to Rose, who skilfully rounded 4 Danielle Butler gets stuck in Nikita Whinnett attacks As the half went on, there were signs that Town were beginning to become more fluent and Whinnett took full advantage of her first clear-cut opportunity to restore the visitors lead two minutes before half-time. Leah Cowan slid the ball down the inside-left channel and the 9-year-old sprinted away to angle her shot underneath Kinsella from eight yards out. Hutton levelled in the 48th minute when Dannielle Cliffe out-muscled Nikki Allen before stroking the ball past Vian into the bottom right-hand corner, and shortly afterwards Laura Allen saw an effort ruled out for offside. Kelly Walker passes A watchful Jess Tuffen The match had entered the third minute of stoppage time when Whinnett delivered the decisive blow. Lovell won the ball courageously in the centre of the park before continuing her run to latch onto Rose s return pass. The defender then threaded the ball through to Whinnett, who made no mistake in clinically rifling her shot into the top left-hand corner to spark scenes of glee. Hutton s Allen was later dismissed for a second bookable offence, leaving Blues to claim their ninth victory in twelve matches. Izzy Vian gets a vital touch to the ball 7

5 match report Brentwood Town (Lovell 54 pen) Arlesey Town 0 match photos Katerina Hamplova wasted a fine opportunity in the 6th minute, firing over when Brentwood failed to clear Sarah Tayler s cross. Nikki Allen contests an aerial ball Sophie Lovell and Nikita Whinnett try to convert ERWFL Premier the Society of Old Brentwoods on Sun 07 Nov 00 With the visitors enjoying the bulk of possession, the half ended with Izzy Vian on top form, producing an excellent save at Town: Izzy Vian, Sarah Murphy, Jess Tuffen, full stretch to her right to palm away Mandy Kelly Walker, Nicole Manning, Sophie Lovell, Cain s goalbound effort, and then Nicole Nikki Allen, Lucy Faraday, Nikita Whinnett, Manning executing a perfectly-timed sliding Danielle Butler (Keeley Walker 69), Bryony tackle on Hamplova on the right-hand side Lynch (Toni Brown 90+3). Substitute not used: of the penalty area. Dominique Hume. The second half began in a similar vein as Brentwood Town Ladies extended their Tayler almost scored when her 30-yard shot unbeaten run to thirteen matches with from the right flank connected with the a -0 win over Arlesey Town at the outside of the post, but Brentwood Society of Old Brentwoods as Sophie changed the course of the fixture when Lovell s second half penalty proved the they edged in front four minutes later. Sarah Murphy holds off a Hutton forward difference between the two teams. This was a contrasting clash to the open encounter on the first day of the 00/ season when Blues fell to their only defeat of the term so far against Arlesey at the armadillo Stadium. Opportunities were at a premium throughout, which made Lovell s clinically-dispatched spot-kick nine minutes into the second period even more important. Today s victory was all down to hard work with plenty of guts to accompany an excellent defensive display from the whole team, declared manager Ian Bent. We defended superbly throughout and limited Arlesey to one clear-cut chance and a few long-range efforts all game, which was very pleasing. Brentwood threatened first when Jess Tuffen s left-wing throw was laid into the path of Nikita Whinnett by Lucy Faraday and the 9-year-old forward smashed a snap-shot narrowly wide of the left-hand upright. Arlesey s first opening was probably their best of the entire match as the prolific 6 Lucy Faraday s corner kick was only cleared as far as Manning just inside the penalty area and, with her back to goal, she was sent tumbling to the ground, leaving the referee no choice but to point to the spot. Lovell stepped up and drove her second successful penalty of the season past Becki Scott to make it -0. From that point on, in a close fixture, Blues always seemed the more likely to score, despite Tayler again being thwarted by Vian as the keeper tipped her outlandish 35-yard free-kick over the crossbar. Carla Rose waits for play to restart The squad unveil their new kit before the match Substitute Keeley Walker chipped over after Faraday s corner was pushed into her path, and Whinnett was unlucky when Amie Meager got the faintest of touches to Lynch s centre to deny her a simple tap-in. The final move of the match was arguably the best, Faraday sweeping the ball into the path of Whinnett, who saw Scott parry her 0-yard shot out. Walker retrieved the ball on the right to set up Whinnett again, but Scott this time tipped another strong shot into the side-netting, but that could not deny Blues their seventh League win. 5

The only other fixture to take place saw Kettering Town extend the distance between themselves and the relegation zone with an impressive 3-0 success at Haringey Borough, who remain above Cambridge University only on goal difference. The Poppies win at Coles Park was secured thanks to efforts from Naomi Dwane, Emma Dunmore and Simone Cook.
