4 CKNOWLEGEMENTS This bk is dedicated t all caches, players, parents and f cials withut whse passin fr sccer the greatest game in the wrld culd nt eist. We thank all the teams, players and caches that have participated in develping the practice sessins and used them n the eld them t make sure they wrk.

5 Intrductin The idea fr Print & G practices and PracticeBuilder came frm a recgnitin that smething was missing fr sccer caches amngst all the training materials and resurces available. N dubt yu have heard that a cach must have a practice plan when ging t run a practice. If yu are like mst caches, yu prbably have bks and vides full f drills and practice ideas. If yu are like mst caches, yu als rush frm wrk t the practice eld desperately trying t write a practice plan in yur head (hpefully nt n paper while driving), rganizing and visualizing drills and things t say. Maybe yu even brught sme bks r phtcpies f drills with yu. Maybe yu even rughed ut a plan the night befre n a piece f paper. N matter what, yu either spent signi cant time researching and writing r signi cant time scrambling. What abut the net practice? What abut a seasn plan? What abut the team s needs and fcus? Fitness training: yes r n? uring practice r separate sessins? Scrimmages? Speed and mental training? Where are the drills fr that? Hw abut eibility? ny difference between age grups? T help yu fcus yur time n deciding what is imprtant fr yur team t wrk n we thught it wuld be a gd idea t d the research and the writing fr yu. S we have develped a set f 10 cmplete practice sessins and and a tl t develp hundreds f additinal sessins. ll yu need t d is t decide n a fcus fr the seasn and a theme fr each practice. The printed material is supplemented by pictures f stretches and mves and by the tips published n ur website This is the rst in hpefully a series f Print & G practice sessins and PracticeBuilder tls. We recmmend this set fr yuth teams (11 and lder) up t and including High Schl and Cllege teams. These practices and drills have been run with year ld bys teams; year ld girls teams and Cllege teams. We hpe yu will enjy yur seasn.

6 Our Philsphy Practices need t be fun fr players and caches. rills must be interesting and vary acrss skills, tactics, strategies, mental and physical tness and team building. Players need t be busy with a ball at all times t maimize the number f tuches they get with the ball. Practices must w and time must nt be wasted by the cach setting up r thinking abut drills. Practices and drills must have a purpse. We suggest yu schedule 2 hurs fr the practice with the hpe t start 15 minutes after the scheduled start time and allwing fr breaks. That way, the 1-1/2 hur sessins will t nicely withut the stress f late-cmers messing things up. If the practice starts n time and ws well, use any etra time at the end fr additinal scrimmages. Yu will be very ppular with the players. We suggest that each practice starts with a brief meeting between caches and players in which the theme f the practice is cmmunicated t the players. Then start with a warm up. Yu will ntice that ur warm-ups already incrprate the theme f the practice, lts f ball wrk, tness and thinking eercises in a purely sccer way. N repetitive running, nt many eercises withut a ball and if s, then they are fun and challenging. We have cushined the tness sectin between technical and tactical drills. The reasn is that we want players t be prperly warmed up fr skill wrk, but then challenge their stamina and mind by requiring technical skills after tness wrk. End with a scrimmage and feel free t adapt them r change them t suit yur team s needs. fter the practice, have a quick meeting again fr ging ver the practice brie y, invite cmments frm the players, cngratulate them n their effrt and imprvement and make any annuncements regarding upcming events. uring the drills, be patient. Observe and intervene nly when needed. Keep yur cmments psitive, t the pint and brief. Speak ludly and clearly. It is better t demnstrate a drill r a cncept than t give a speech. Never yell at a player r use dergatry language. ll drills are designed t be cnducted n 1 2 eld, but mst can be epanded t full eld if space is available. This wuld be particularly true fr full eld scrimmages.

7 Print & G Practices Usage Recmmendatins We have develped a matri fr the 10 sessins shwing the fcus f the practice and f each f the drills in the practice. Please study the matri t becme familiar with the cntent f each sessin and drill. On the matri page is a b suggesting varius ways t sequence these sessins. Chse the emphasis fr yur net 10 practices (which culd be a seasn r pre-seasn) and study the sequence suggested. Of curse, yu are free t develp yur wn sequence. Refer t the individual practice sheets r the individual PracticeBuilder drill sheets fr a better understanding. Write cmments n the drill sheets. We suggest yu visualize the drills t make sure yu understand hw they will w. If necessary, set them up in yur living rm and walk thrugh them. Keep a clean cpy f the bk at hme and put the pages yu take t the practice with yu in clear plastic sheet prtectrs t prtect them frm water r ther disturbances (yu knw what can happen t papers). PracticeBuilder Usage Recmmendatins The PracticeBuilder was designed fr tw purpses. Firstly, t have a bigger picture f the eercises t wrk frm and t allw yu t make ntes f what r whm yu want t bserve befre yu start the drill and ntes f what yu learnt frm the drill. The pages t nicely n a clipbard. Secndly, we wanted t make it easy fr yu t create yur wn practices by simply pulling a number f drills and arranging them in a sequence that meets yur needs. We recmmend that yu stick with ur general practice philsphy and at a minumum suggest yu start with a warm-up and end with a scrimmage. In between, yu can design whichever way. If yur team needs 4 tness sessins and n technical/tactical wrk- g fr it. Yu want t wrk three shting related sessinsthey are ready t g. Feedback We always lk fr ways t imprve. S any suggestins are welcme. Please them t cach@sccerpracticebks.cm.
