1 KOLAT.COM 4-6 Year Teaching Curriculum Fr New T Nvice Wrestlers by Cary Klat KOLAT.COM Curriculum Clips In August, Cary will begin shting the KOLAT.COM Curriculum Clips that precisely illustrate the techniques fund inside ur new KOLAT.COM Curriculum System. In the meantime, we are referencing current clips in the KOLAT.COM vide library that already apply t the KOLAT.COM curriculum system. Members have requested this infrmatin fr sme time, s in an effrt t allw them t start planning their seasn, we are cnnecting this infrmatin right away. Nte: Dn t be cnfused if the entire clip is nt identical t the technique that yu are viewing. Within that clip, there will be a sectin related t the Curriculum skill yu are searching fr. Example Technique: Head ppsite hips finish fr the high crtch. Reasn: The clip will shw the finish frm the duble leg. The reasn being that a high crtch change-ff is really a duble leg when finishing the technique. This will allw yu t begin planning yur practices as sn as yu jin. Curriculum Clips Launch Date: Octber 1, 2011 Discunt: Jin KOLAT.COM, as a Year member, befre Octber 1, 2011 and yur membership price will be $99.95 instead f $ (Use the fllwing discunt cde at checkut: KOL4-6) Wh Shuld Use the Curriculum Cary Klat launched KOLAT.COM in the summer f 2008 as the first nline vide library dedicated t wrestling technique. In an effrt t increase the knwledge f caches and wrestlers, Cary has cntinued t develp the site by regularly adding new vides and new features. The KOLAT.COM Curriculum is a much-anticipated feature that wrestlers, caches and fathers have been asking fr since day ne: Hw d yu teach smene hw t wrestle? This first step in this quest was the develpment f the KOLAT.COM Library and the 2 nd step was the develpment f the KOLAT.COM Planner (launched in the fall f 2010). By integrating the planner int ur extensive vide library, the Planner allws caches, athletes and fathers t layut training sessins. The KOLAT.COM Curriculum takes it a step further by identifying the essentials skills and techniques that are required t prgress in the sprt f wrestling at every level. This Curriculum will be imprtant fr everyne wh feels that smewhere alng the line they were nt given sund fundamentals and need t sharpen up their skills. Hwever, fr the mst part it was created fr thse beginning wrestlers, caches, and fathers just entering the sprt and needing a guide. When designing this curriculum, Cary reflected n techniques he was taught while starting ut, the mistakes that he made and the things he wished that he had learned. Cary als tapped int his years f experience caching at the yuth level t identify the areas that must be cvered fr a yung wrestler t develp. The KOLAT.COM Curriculum will enable all wrestlers t discver their strengths and weaknesses and eventually help them t develp their wn winning style. Hw the Levels Shuld Be Apprached The levels f the Curriculum shuld be treated as a knwledge base. The wrng way t lk at the levels is t fllw the Curriculum assuming all levels are equal t ne year f wrestling. That is nt the structure f this Curriculum! Levels are taught and athletes evaluated based n hw they have perfected the techniques inside a particular level. It is similar t the belt system in Karate. The master instructr will nt advance yur belt until he feels yu have a cmplete understanding and can execute all f the techniques. This is hw levels shuld be advanced in the Curriculum. The levels allw caches t knw exactly what a wrestler needs. The levels are als used t help mtivate wrestlers t gain a better understanding f fundamental skills, as they nw knw exactly hw t mve nt the next level. They shuld nly advance after they have passed an evaluatin. Athletes will advance levels at different times; what takes ne wrestler ne year t master might take anther much lnger. Wrestling teaches athletes discipline, selfcnfidence, and builds the bdy. Wrestling is a like a sprint in cmpetitin, but training and success shuld be apprached like a marathn. Perfecting this sprt takes years f learning and training. Techniques Inside the Curriculum The techniques inside the Curriculum are nt designed t prduce athletes wh wrestle a certain style. Wrestlers will develp their wn style f wrestling ver time as they wrk thrugh the levels. Basic techniques are laid ut first t give wrestlers slid fundamentals: ffensive attacks, defensive tactics, and psitin-riented wrestling. T make sure that wrestlers d nt get lcked int nly ne realm f scring pssibilities, the Curriculum slwly branches ut. This helps wrestlers becme aware f hw t wrestle frm all areas. Fr example, using their feet t attack with an inside trip r using a fake t thrw an ppnent ff balance t setup a thrw. The intent behind this design is t make them cmfrtable and t give them knwledge f all psitins, which will subsequently help them develp. Style will develp later in a wrestler's career after they have a clear grasp f fundamentals. At that pint, a wrestler will begin t fcus n specific areas f wrestling technique that fits their skill level and apprach t the sprt. Mst techniques build frm the prir level, s even if a Level 2 wrestler is put int a Level 3 training sessin (maybe yu need him as a partner), he will mre than likely have an understanding f what is being drilled and taught in the sessin.

2 Using KOLAT.COM and the Curriculum fr Style Develpment f style in the Curriculum ges as fllws. Wrestler A and Wrestler B have trained in the same prgram thrugh all levels and each ne has his wn style based n bdy shape, athletic ability, flexibility, and s n. Wrestler A may have a real feel fr using the Russian 2 n 1 series, but the Curriculum nly tuches this area with basic scring psitins. A cach r athlete can access the KOLAT.COM Vide Library t add mre techniques frm that series t training sessins. This will give Wrestler A mre skills in the area he excels in and allw him mre pprtunities t scre when in that psitin. Wrestler B may have a feel fr leg riding, s he may want t increase his knwledge f this psitin. Again, he will be able t dive int the KOLAT.COM Vide Library fr a mre in-depth lk at leg riding. Drills Drills are imperative in learning skills and techniques thrughut the prcess. All the drills are hused within Level 1. When a cach is lking fr smething fr warm up, cnditining, r in the middle f practice t reinfrce a skill, use Level 1 as a reference. Drills are best used in all areas f training, but a huge impact is made in the middle f a training sessin. This will keep the energy level high in the rm and if yu ntice athletes lsing a sweat during a teaching phase, drp a drill in t pick the pace up nce again. Keep in mind that drills advance, as d techniques during levels. There will be drills that relate t techniques in Level 3, but there is nthing wrng with teaching athletes drills prir t reaching certain levels. They will gain the benefit f the drill and nce a specific technique is brught int training, the athlete will already have a grasp f it. Learning the drills befre the technique will als make it easier n the cach t facilitate a warm-up r cnditining sessin that includes all levels f athletes and desn't cater t just ne grup, r t ne level f athletes. Using The Levels T Run Training Sessins Teams with multiple caches have the ability t place caches in charge f different levels. This curriculum allws each t knw exactly what needs t be taught and hw t plan. Wrestlers culd easily be taught drills first and all team members culd warm-up tgether befre being split int their teaching grups; hwever, if yu are a ne-man shw, yu can structure wrkuts t sme extent and cater t all athletes. An example wuld be teaching the High Crtch takedwn during a training sessin. The techniques build s that all wrestlers culd be taught the first finish and as yu advance the teaching, Level 1 wuld cntinue t use Level 1 finishes fr the high crtch while yu begin t lead int Level 2 finishes, and s n. What t Expect in the Future The Curriculum will cntinue t evlve. Changes and adjustments will be made ver time based n feedback frm thse using the prgram. Sme ther facets t be added as the Curriculum prgresses: A gymnastics prgram with clips t teach athletes bdy awareness and t build up explsive pwer and cre strength. A strength prgram with Kettle bell wrkuts. Kettle bells are easy t stre and they d nt take up space like traditinal weights. They increase cre strength, agility, balance and cnditining. They are reasnably affrdable. KOLAT.COM Planner training sessins geared specifically fr this training Curriculum, making it even simpler fr caches t fllw alng and nt run ut f ideas when building a sessin fr athletes. Curriculum vide clips will be added t the vide library t specifically fllw the Curriculum system. This will be a great asset when cmbined with ur current series based vide library f mre than 1200 techniques. Cary Klat will begin Weekly FREE Clinics live nline. Mst clinics will be geared t the Curriculum prgram t help caches, parents, and athletes becme better acquainted with the new system develped by Cary. Cary s Advice n When An Athlete Shuld Start The Curriculum That is up t yu, the parent, the cach, and the athlete. I can nly give my advice with a 33-year knwledge base behind it. Yu can take my advice, tweak it, r hit the grund running based n what the masses are ding. The bdy can nly take s much ver the lng haul, and vertraining will increase the risk f injury and eventually serius injury. This can happen at any age and the mre yu train at a yung age the mre that risk increases. Yu can t teach wrestling t a yung athlete wh cannt cntrl his wn bdy! I have stated this many times t parents wanting t put their sn r daughter int the sprt at a yung age. If yur child cannt cntrl his r her wn bdy and d s t the extent f a perfect frward rll, backward rll, cartwheel, frnt handspring, r back handspring, then why wuld yu think they are ready t learn hw t cntrl anther persn's bdy? I plan t include sme teaching f this in the very near future but gymnastics is the mther f all sprts. If yu can perfrm simple gymnastics mvements prir t entering wrestling (r any ther sprt fr that matter) yur transitin int ther sprts will be much easier! Yu nly have s many wins in yur bdy, bth physically and mentally. Yu can take a yung wrestler, give him a crash curse in basic areas and get sme wins. Many f the wins will cme with bad technique and every time a little guy scres using bad technique that prblem nly gets wrse because five years dwn the rad the next cach will be trying t crrect an issue that has been reinfrced with wins behind it. That athlete is a nightmare fr the new cach, because mst times athletes are unwilling t change what has wrked s many years fr him r her at the yunger age grups. Taking yur time and perfecting the techniques in the curriculum at a slw pace will nt put yu n the tp f the stand right away, but will put yu n the tp later dwn the rad... when it cunts! Victries at a yung age will help any child with self-esteem issues, cnfidence, and discipline, but success at a yung age in the grand scheme f things is nt an indicatr f future success. Sure, it is great and exciting t parents and t the athlete, but when everyne gets lder and the muscles get bigger he will learn a hard lessn frm which yu hpe he can bunce back, and nt be washed ut f the sprt. The truth f the matter is that success at a yung age nly means despair at an lder age if it s nt dne crrectly. I knw it is nt what yu want t hear but the yung kids n tp have the dds against them that they fizzle ut by junir high and high schl. Typically this is due t ne f tw things: First, they were strnger at a yung age getting mre wins and reinfrcing bad technique habits that need crrected later that they nw are unwilling t change. On the ther hand, the wrestler

3 simply gets tired f wrestling and the pressure that cmes alng with it later when everyne expects him/her t keep winning like he/she always has. Hw yu apprach the start f yur wrestling career is critical t yur lngevity and success when it really matters. Nne f the cllege caches wh recruited me ever asked me abut my titles at the yuth level. I, myself, g against the rule, having success n all levels; yet understand that there are very few peple wh have dne that and I cnsider myself very lucky t have accmplished the things that I have in my wresting career. Framewrk fr entering wrestling: First, 3-4 year in sme srt f gymnastics r tumbling prgram t prmte bdy awareness. Secnd, 1 t 2 years f training prir t cmpeting in any srt f cmpetitin directly fr wrestling with training nly happening 2-3 days per week. If yu can cntinue the tumbling r gymnastics, stay with it as lng as the athlete is nt getting t wrn ut. Third, when the athlete feels ready and shws a real desire t start cmpeting, then make the mve int cmpetitin with n mre than matches per year. Breakdwn by age: 4-5 years f age enter int tumbling 8-9 years f age enter int wrestling training years f age enter int first wrestling cmpetitin
