4 WELCOME #NPLNSW Welcome everyone to our Round 16 match against Hakoah Sydney City East. Another Saturday night fixture, under lights here at WIN Stadium The Wolf Den. Superb stadium Great atmosphere Plenty to play for. Both clubs are sitting in remarkably similar positions across all 3 grades and club championships points. These are all must win games and will set the winners up for a strong finish to the season. In First Grade both the Wolves and Hakoah are sitting on 19 competition points, agonisingly one solitary point outside the top 5. A win here could see the victor claim outright 5th spot and start to put pressure on 4th and 3rd while a loss will see the vanquished start to slip dangerously down the competition ladder at the wrong time of the season. So much hinges on this First Grade fixture and both teams will be looking for the ascendency to keep their finals aspirations alive and build up some very strong momentum for the final run of matches leading to season s end. There will be some great football on offer here as each side needs a victory and neither will leave anything in the tank looking to claim the full 3 competition points on offer. In U20s, again both sides find themselves in very similar positions on the ladder. Our Wolves have been the real surprise packet in this year s U20s competition, occupying 4th spot on the ladder with 26 competition points. Hakoah however is breathing right down our necks, sitting in 5th spot, one point behind on 25 competition points. This will be another mouth watering encounter with both teams out to put their stamp on proceedings and claim the full 3 points available. The Wollongong Wolves U20s are playing an attractive brand of football and have surprised many with their strong showings this season and their position on the table. Our boys will be looking to continue this and consolidate their spot in the 5 even further. A crunch match for our U18s who at the moment find themselves one win out of the top 5. Above them, holding equal 5th spot currently are Marconi and Hakoah so our boys know this is a season defining match for our U18s finals aspirations. A win here will see us rise to really start putting pressure on those above us and snare a possible finals position at the end of the competition rounds, while a loss will leave us with quite a lot of ground to make up and with not all that many games remaining. A huge match for our Wolves and one they will be more than prepared for. Amazingly, in the Club Championship standings, after 45 qualifying matches across the season to date, Hakoah sit in 4th spot on the Club Championship table with 149 points and the Wolves hold down 5th spot with 148 points. So after a minimum of 4,050 minutes of regular time football across First Grade, U20s and U18s only one solitary point separate these two clubs. Incredible. Today will be one of the most competitive and hard fought rounds of matches across the entire season. All three grades have so much at stake and it will be a win at all costs mentality for every single player taking the field for their respective teams. And played in the best stadium in our competition and in front of the most passionate and proud football supporters across our country. Sit back and enjoy the drama, tension, action and excitement right here at WIN Stadium the Wolf Den, under lights, at the best stadium in our competition and among the most passionate and proud football fans across Australila. GO YOU MIGHTY WOLVES. 4

7 NPLNSW.COM.AU PLAYERS TO WATCH Anthony Frangie achieved a brace in his previous match and is the top sharpshooter for his club. His confidence will be high and he will most probably be a standout in the team. Chris Price can either play as a wingback or be pushed further into midfield on the left side being a consummate and experienced player who is also very adept at attacking. He has scored at times with one particular goal being a highlight against this opposition tonight. He is a ten season player with the club and has played over a hundred games while at the Wolves. He is indeed one to watch. BLAST FROM THE PAST In 1986 the Wolves met Sydney City at Wollongong Showground for this Round 9 fixture. Wolves: Warwick Young, David Green, Jock Morlando, Peter Kotamanidis, Ray Vlietstra, Reg Chilby, Leonel Arcosa, Bryan Cokely, Larry Gaffney, Robert Giraldi and Pat Brodnik. David Batten replaced Brodnik. The coach was John Fleming. Sydney City; Alex McPherson, Alec Robertson, Grant Lee, Jean-Paul De Marigny, Steve O Connor, Gerry Gomez, Murray Barnes, Joe Watson, Eli Ohana, John Kosmina and Frank Farina with Eddie Thomson being the coach. Controversy reared later in the match but before this eventuated, the Wolves went into the lead. Kotamanidis scored after curling a free kick into the goal from twenty metres out past the goalkeeper. However, the Wolves went a man down following Cokely s dismissal. The away team scored an equaliser when Lee hit the ball from thirty metres. It rocketed into the goal leaving Hughes grasping at air. However, moments before, the ball had been cleared but three Sydney players were running back and were offside when Lee subsequently struck. The referee ruled that these three were not hindering the custodian s vision so the goal stood. Coach Fleming was livid about this decision. Kosmina earlier had a chance to score before his team ultimately did but his shot went straight at Young. Barnes was the pick of the away side. A draw was a fair result according to reports. 12 LOCAL FOOTBALL #NPLNSW PISTOL PETE: A BREAKER S LEGEND Peter Pistol Pearce was one of the five founding members of Gerringong Breakers Football Club. The year was 1985, and the club entered just one men s side into the Shoalhaven s Third Grade Competition. Peter was the Club s first President and can still remember its inaugural year. The club had to borrow nets and equipment from the local school, and players would play at an indoor competition in Kiama, with the intent to use the prize money to purchase the club its own equipment. Flash forward 32 years, and Pistol Pete can still be found at Gerry Emery Oval cheering on his beloved club, the mighty Gerringong Breakers. He is overcome with pride when he considers how far the club has come since The Breakers today have over 300 registered players (220 juniors and 85 senior players), and the club is arguably in the best period of its history to date. The men s First Grade were League Champions in 2016 and 2017 and are on course for a finals spot again this season. In addition to that, the 1st Grade Women s team have been League and Grand Final Double Winners for 3 years in a row (2015, 2016, & 2017). A life member of Gerringong Breakers Football Club, Peter Pistol Pearce can still remember the late 80s/early 90s, when games were played at Cronin s Oval before the club moved to Gerry Emery Oval. There would often be a mix up between the clubs using Cronin s, and field lines would be incorrectly marked Pearce recalled. There were plenty of times I d be mowing the field markings in hours before kick off so the boys could play. His favourite position was in midfield, but that was not always Pistol s role at school, where he began playing as a Goalkeeper. For the Breakers, I was a bit of a utility player, I was happy to have a run where needed, but midfield was my favourite. When asked for his favourite memory with the Breakers, Pistol Pete chose the 1985 inaugural season, where Gerringong defeated Culburra in the Grand Final to be Third Grade minor Premiers and Grand Final winners in their first 12

13 NPLNSW.COM.AU season. I came on as a sub with 15 minutes to go, the boys were 2-0 up at that point. I ll never forget that day. His only goal for the club is another memory, not least of all because it was scored from inside his own half! It was my last game for the Breakers, and the ball rolled to me just inside our half. I had a defender closing me down and made a rushed decision to punt it long. I can remember thinking worst case scenario it ll be a goal kick or the lads up top will deal with it up there. I caught it pretty sweet off the laces, and it looked like it was heading well over, so I turned my back to get ready for the goal kick. I didn t see it drop over the top of the keeper and into the net. FAST 5 Q&A 1) Favourite Breakers moment: 1985 minor and grand final winners in our Inaugural year 2) Favourite team: West Ham United 3) Skill/sporting attribute I wish I had: speed 4) Favourite Player: Gordon Banks 5) Favourite position: Midfield/anywhere as long as I could get a run 13

19 NPLNSW.COM.AU BETTER THAN THE REST This is a look at the average of a season s tally of goals to the number of scorers and to nominate which season is better than all the rest. The top average ratio is 6.3, followed by 6.0 and 5.6, with the lowest being 1.8, this cropping up twice in the 1989 and the 1991/92 seasons. It is probably not surprising that the two NSL championship years of 1999/2000 and 2000/2001 have the best average as the team scored a whopping high of seventy-two and seventy-six goals in the seasons with twelve scorers in each year. The latter season had the 6.3 average with Stuart Young scoring nineteen goals, with Sasho Petrovski and Scott Chipperfield with fourteen goals and eleven goals respectively and with Esala Masi adding his eleven total to the mix. Matt Horsley, Paul Reid, Robert Stanton, Alvin Ceccoli, Paul Harries Robbie Middleby, Ben Blake and David Huxley plus an own goal contributed the extras. Three of the same four players, Young, Petrovski and Chipperfield scored the bulk in the previous season, fifty-one between them and in this 1999/2000 season, the average was a high 6.0 goals per player average with Neil Harlock, Matt Horsley, Paul Reid, David Cervinski, George Souris, Dino Mennillo, Alvin Ceccoli and Ben Blake adding the others. The rest is the lowest average of 1.8 that was set both in the 1989 and 1991/92 seasons. In the 1989 season, the number of goals scored amounted to twenty-two with twelve players scoring them. These players were Randall Easthorpe being the top scorer with six with Danny Crainie, Pat Brodnik, David Skeen, Jock Morlando, John Danzo, Brian Cokely, Sean Ingham, Danny Petkovic, Rade Stefanovski, Peter Kotamanidis plus an own goal. In the 1991/92 season, twenty-four goals were tallied with thirteen scorers. Claude Cellini was the top scorer with five with other scorers adding either one or two goals. These players were Mike O Shea, Frank Bate, Alex Bundalo, Richard Lloyd, Grant Bard, Matt Horsley, Pat Brodnik, Mike Smith, Charlie Yankos and David Skeen plus an own goal. In the years of the NSW Premier League from 2004/05, the best average is 5.6 in the 2004/05 season followed by 4.0 in Only twentyeight goals were hit in 2013 with only seven scorers. Ricky Zucco topped the count with eleven and Joseph Lavalle, Mitchell Del Turco James Baldacchino Chris Nathaniel and Peter Simonoski added the other seventeen goals. In 2004/05 there were only six scorers with Shane McGirr scoring eighteen with five sharing the additional sixteen. These players were Michael Clare, Alvin Ceccoli, Adam Hughes, Paul Harries and Nick Stavroulakis. The most common average is 2.7 and 3.4 coming in four seasons each, 2.7 in the 1984, 1989/90, 1992/93 and 2002/03 seasons and 3.5 in years 1981, 1982, 2008 and Seasons with a single scorer or a number of scorers achieving a huge tally of goals have a big impact on the average. The 1999/2000 and 2000/2001 and the 2004/05 seasons were better than all the rest in the total season goals scored to the season tally of scorers. By Malcolm Rowney 19

With both teams six and nine points off top spot respectively, a win is essential for either side to keep their faint hopes reeling in Sutherland Sharks alive. The Wolves appear to greater chance to make that a possibility than their fifth-placed opponents. Wollongong edged Sutherland 3-2 last Sunday and have won four of their last five matches, keeping three clean sheets in the process. Not only are Wollongong the league s best defensive unit but boast one of the campaign s outstanding performers in Tory Musumeci, whose brace against Sutherland raised his tally for the season to 11. Although the Wolves will be considered narrow favourites before kick off, they won t want to overlook at Hakoah side who have flown under the radar all season. A 1-0 win over Sydney Olympic last weekend brought a return to winning form for Hakoah, who have a six-point buffer over Manly United in sixth. 23

26 WELCOME TO THE CLUB #NPLNSW There are a selection of players who have made appearances for A-League clubs after they had played at the Wollongong Wolves such as Matt Horsley, Stuart Young, Naum Sekuloski, Dean Heffernan, Sasho Petrovski, Jacob Timpano, Alvin Ceccoli, Mark Robertson, Jason Trifiro, Corey Gameiro, Josh Bingham, Adam Casey and Justin Pasfield, but this article is concerned with players who had a welcome to the club either directly or by a roundabout way following their A-League experience. Three of the hitherto mentioned players had done just that, with one of these, in addition with two others, are in the current (2018) team. STEWART PETRIE Scottish import and striker for the Central Coast Mariners in two seasons, 2005/ /07, Petrie tallied ten goals, with eight in his first season and two in the other. He played forty-one times including two substitute entries. The striker came to the Wolves in 2007 and played four league games and three cup games and scored two cup goals in his stint. These came against Fraser Park F.C., and Dandaloo Lions F.C. in the semi-final. With the introductory work by Tynan Diaz and Ballamodou Conde, For his first strike, Petrie with the ball at his feet, moved into a shooting position on the left side before letting loose on the ball with a powerful left footed shot that raced into the goal, dodging the goalkeeper. For his semifinal effort at Seymour Shaw Park, Miranda, Steve Hayes had produced a powerfully driven shot. The custodian managed to keep it out but the ball ran to Petrie and he subsequently slotted it home. He also assisted in what should have been a certain goal but after having the ball squared to him, the recipient missed the unoccupied goal. However, his team won 3-1 to qualify for the final. Petrie made an impressive display with the team and his sterling contribution assisted the team. Petrie played his final game in Australia on 24th June 2007 at Crehan Park versus APIA Leichhardt, thereby being unavailable for the Cup Final. I have enjoyed my time here and hope the boys can keep it going. They did exactly this by winning the Cup Final. 26 DEZ GIRALDI Giraldi made seven starting appearances for Adelaide United in the 2007/08 season and tallied eight on field substitute roles across his three seasons. He came to the Wolves in 2008 and played four league games with one goal scored with the opposition being West Sydney Berries. It emanated in the fifty-sixth minute. Chris Price had whisked in a corner kick and Giraldi was in the vicinity to head home. It was good to get onto the score sheet today and it was important for us to get the win We had to be patient being one man up. We did and it came off. He left the Wolves and signed with Sydney F C. In later years he became an assistant with coach Jacob Timpano in JUSTIN PASFIELD The goalkeeper made fourteen appearances for the Central Coast Mariners from and prior was at North Queensland Fury with thirty-nine starts. He was also with Sydney FC as a back-up goalkeeper in 2005/06 but could not budge the incumbent Clint Bolton. Pasfield was at the Wolves for the 2008 season and played in the 2008 Grand Final victory. In this season he made seventeen league games with two finals games plus one cup. He returned again to the Wolves for the 2016, 2017 and now 2018 campaigns. He had a

27 NPLNSW.COM.AU tremendous season in 2017 winning three awards at the Presentation Night including Best Player. In the Round 17 Sydney United 58 game he was his usual impressive custodian earning a clean sheet with his splendid display. Yeah it was good for the self-esteem...we did well today and the boys stuck in. A bit of luck went our way but you have make your own luck and a clean sheet at home is what we try to achieve. He has amassed forty-one league games from with one cup start in each of these seasons. In 2018 he has thirteen appearances (up until Round ). On occasions he has captained the team. SASHO PETROVSKI The prolific goal scorer played for Sydney F.C. ( ), Central Coast Mariners ( ) and Newcastle Jets ( ) with forty-three appearances with fourteen goals being scored, forty-four with fourteen goals and thirty-five and eight goals, at each club respectively. He played in the 2006 winning Grand Final team with Sydney F.C. Petrovski came back to the Wolves for the 2011 and 2012 seasons and in the first of these years he made twenty appearances with nine goals with one cup start. He played 21 league matches and one finals game scored five goals and had one cup appearance in 2012 tallying. For a number of games he was elevated to team captain. His final goal was in Round 22 versus Sutherland Sharks and his last game was in the Elimination Final against Blacktown City. On twenty minutes, Petrovski took on Sharks defender and eluded him. He looked up to see where the custodian was position. He subsequently curled the ball inside the post. It was quite pleasing (to score).. A good result and a good way to finish at home. JACOB TIMPANO The current coach of the club played for Sydney F.C. in the inaugural A-League season, 2005/06 to the 2007/08 making a total of twenty-six league appearances with the season breakdown of twenty-one, two and three. While at Sydney he played in the 2005 A-League Grand Final versus Central Coast Mariners and achieved a winner s medal. I got to play with players such as Dwight Yorke. I used to watch him on television and here I was playing in the same team as him. It took until 2011 for Timpano to return via another NSW Premier League club to the Wolves and he played from making fifty-four league appearances, two Cup starts and one finals match. While at the Wolves, he mostly was positioned in his customary central defender role but on occasions played in the midfield. On one other occasion he played up front in the striker s role versus Sydney Olympic. In addition, he was the captain of the team and lead by example. At present he is the coach of the team since being signed as coach in JOSHUA MACDONALD Macdonald was with Western Sydney Wanderers in the 2015/2016 A-League season making two appearances from the bench. He also played in the 2015 FFA Cup, winning a penalty for his team versus Brisbane Roar. The tricky up front wide player began playing at the Wolves in 2016 and is currently in his third season in the red and whites. He attained 14 starting appearances and two from the bench with one goal in He has scored a total of three league goals with his most recent being in In the sixty-eighth minute and being left to his own devices by the Manly United markers, he took a touch before hammering 27

28 #NPLNSW the ball in at the near post for the winner. I see myself as an attacking and creative player. NICK MONTGOMERY Montgomery retired from the A-League following the 2016/17 season and signed here and began playing in Wollongong Wolves colours in 2017 Round 12, scoring a debut goal against Parramatta Eagles to boot. Six minutes in just inside the penalty area, he was positioned. A Brett Wilson long throw bounced off the heads of two defenders before falling fortuitously at Montgomery s feet. A pile driver of a shot zoomed into the goal. Today was a fantastic performance for the boys and we thoroughly deserved the 3-0 win. It was nice to be on the score sheet. He was on the books at the Central Coast Mariners for five seasons With one hundred and sixteen appearances including five off the bench Montgomery also got on the scorers list with three goals in his first, third and fifth seasons. In 2018, he is the match captain on the field and in addition, is assistant to Timpano in the coaching rank. He played ten matches in 2017 and nine to date in In this seasons opening round, he was most effective with a strong display in his midfield role, greatly assisting the team against a very strong adversary in Blacktown City. He has added another goal to his tally with a good strike versus Sydney Olympic in Round 10 and a blockbuster in the Round 15 Sutherland Sharks match at J. J. Kelly Park, coniston LUKE WILKSHIRE The right sided wing back/defender Wilkshire came to the Wolves club after leaving Sydney F.C. after playing in their record breaking season, with his final game for Sydney being in the A-League Semi-Final versus Melbourne Victory. Wilkshire was signed from Russia as an injury replacement for Rhyan Grant. Yes it was a fantastic group of players, staff and everyone at the club. I made some close friends and close bonds which will last forever. After departing Sydney FC he signed on 11th February 2019 playing his initial game with his new club in Round 10 versus Sydney Olympic. He achieved his first Wolves goal, an equalizer, against Blacktown City when his free kick at first hit the defensive wall. With luck, the ball rebounded straight back. He subsequently produced a first time shot that rocketed into the goal at the near post, eluding the custodian. These players have had a warm welcome to the club and supporters would say the same given the performances. The players have thrilled the crowds while the younger crowd members look up to these players to set the example and this has certainly been displayed in the sanctioned pitch invasion on the last home ground match of the season. The A-League experience of these players has certainly added to our club.
