Date Site Score WP LP Att. 8/7 KC 8/8 KC StL StL A SUNDAY SPLIT AT THE K --Saturday s rainout necessitated a traditional twinbill here yesterday and each team came away with a victory, as Seattle held on for an 8-7 triumph in the opener, but the Royals rebounded for a 9-1 win in the nightcap...the common denominator in each contest was the top four in the batting order, as Seattle s foursome went 6-for-18 with three homers, seven runs scored and six driven in, while KC s top four trumped that with an 11-for-19 second game with eight runs, three homers, a double and eight RBI...Nelson Cruz was the main culprit in game one, homering twice, including a solo shot in the seventh that wound up being the deciding run...danny Duffy fell to 7-7 allowing seven runs in the first two innings, three of which were earned...eric Hosmer and Melky Cabrera fueled the second game win, each collecting three hits, including a home runs, with Hoz knocking home three and Melky four...whit Merrifield also chipped in with his 13th homer of the year, second of the day...jakob Junis put on a terrific performance as the 26th man in the second game allowing just a first inning run and then retiring 19 in a row from the second inning on...the double-dip split coupled with Cleveland s loss on Sunday, pulled KC to within 2 1/2 games of the division lead, while staying a half game up on the Rays for the final Wild Card spot. JAKOB S DAY--Though he has returned to Omaha after serving as the 26th man, it s doubtful any 26th man has had the impact that Jakob Junis did in the nightcap yesterday...the 24-year old gave the Royals 8.0 solid innings, allowing a second inning run before retiring the final 19 men he faced, while establishing a career-best with seven strikeouts...our pals at the Elias Sports Bureau chimed in with Junis becoming the first Royals rookie with two wins as a starter and two as a reliever since Tom Flash Gordon in GALLY HAS A DAY OF FIRSTS--Cam Gallagher on Twitter) checked off a few boxes in his Major League debut on Sunday...summoned to take the roster spot of the injured Salvador Perez, Gallagher got his first taste of big league action in the ninth inning of game one, working defensively after starter Drew Butera was pinch run for in the eighth...gally then got his first big league start in the nightcap, going 1-for-3 with a walk and a run scored, while catching his pal Jakob Junis, both members of the 2011 draft class. AMONG THE RECENT ELITE--KC s record since June 1 is the second best mark in the Majors to the Dodgers ledger...in that span, the Royals have gone 11-4 with three splits in the 18 series played...since the start of the 2014 season, Kansas City has the best overall record among American League clubs with a mark for a.540 winning pct., while Baltimore is next with 321. ACE 30 REMEMBERING YO--The morning of January 22, 2017 will always be remembered as one of the most tragic days in franchise history when word was received that pitcher Yordano Ventura had his life cut short due to a car accident in his native Dominican Republic...signed as a 17-year old in 2008, the fireballing right-hander compiled a during his abbreviated Major League career...among many highlights, Ace will be most remembered for blanking the San Francisco Giants over 7.0 innings in Game #6 of the 2014 World Series to force a seventh and deciding game, while pitching with a heavy heart himself due to the untimely passing of his friend Oscar Tavares...to honor the late Ventura, all uniforms in 2017 will be adorned with the ACE 30 patch.
