We realize that this is not always possible due to illness and other emergencies, however, we cannot stress enough the importance of your child regularly attending school! It is a proven fact that students cannot learn if they are not in attendance and receiving instruction from their fabulous teachers. The State of Texas requires that a student be in attendance for 90% of the school days in a year in order to promote to the next grade or receive credit for their classes. Under the education funding structure, the school district is paid from the state based on ADA, or average daily attendance. Therefore, when your child is absent, they are not only missing valuable instruction, they are also impacting the amount of funding the district receives from the state that fund the wonderful programs we have now or would like to add in the future! It is our goal to return the attendance rate to 97% in order to maximize learning opportunities for your student as well as increase our funding to add new programs and upgrade current programs. Please, please, please join us in this effort to attain the goal of 97% attendance for the benefit of all Covington ISD students! 2 September Covington Cross Country The Covington Runnin' Owls kicked-off the 2018 season by adding a little fun to the start of their meet schedule. The Owls ran in Timberview Wolves 6-Mile Relay in Mansfield on Saturday, August 18th. The 4 member team consisting of Klay Howard, Gerardo Cipres, Austin Windham, and Makiah Cserfoi won the the JV Division with a combined time of 33:12. Each runner ran a distance of 1.5 miles before handing-off a small rubber chicken to the next leg of the relay team. Running with a rubber chicken and handing it off to the next runner was the fun part of the race for the runners. Klay Howard came across at 7:37. Gerardo Cipres' second leg was 8:07 for 1.5 miles. Austin Windham was timed at 9:00 for his 1.5 mile leg. Makiah Cserfoi anchored the winning relay team with a time of 8:28 on his leg of the 6-mile relay. "This was a fun start to our season. Our runners have been running a lot of miles this summer and they were ready to run against other runners to get the feel for running fast again. I think they had fun and had a good workout at the same time." Our expectations, not only for our top individual runners, but for Covington as a team have been set high. Our approach will be to take it one week at at time; one race at a time, in hopes to peak by Championship Season and see what could happen then. We are blessed with a great group of seniors this year, who are great leaders, great guys who just love to run." stated Coach Rodriguez, Head Cross Country Coach. Each week a different positive characteristic word will be spotlighted. Teachers select students performing the acts of the characteristic words each week. The first word for the new year was pride. The following students received OWLstanding student awards for this month. It is a great feeling knowing students can stand out by doing the right things. Great job to all showing their Covington pride with great character traits.

Classroom News Mrs. Manning s Kindergarten Kindergarten has started off class with great success. They have learned all about school rules and classroom procedures. They are looking forward to having a great school year! Mrs. Benton s First Grade First graders spent time learning about their procedures and routines in the classroom. In social studies, they learned what it takes to be a good citizen. They are looking forward to an exciting year.

4 Accelerated Reading Goals ALL students will read books meeting their AR reading level unless otherwise changed by the teacher. Kindergarten will check out at least one fiction and/or nonfiction book on the LG interest level. First through third graders are to read Lower Grade (LG) interest level books. These books are more appropriate in vocabulary and context. Covington 10 BoxTops for Education Covington 10 is having a great season! Great job little Owls!! All classes are encouraged to donate their BoxTops to the school library. Collecting is really easy, just cut BoxTops from participating products, put them in a baggie, and drop off at the library. Be sure to put the grade level of your donations. Each six weeks any class, PK - 12, turning in the most Boxtops will get a 15 minute Popcorn Break in the library. However, the administration and Board of Trustees have developed a replacement for this program. The details for the new after school program are as follows: Start Date: August 27, 2018 Fees: FREE to Covington ISD students!! (There may come a time when a fee will be charged but at this time we are able to offer it as a free service.) Times: Monday through Thursday 3:35-. Snacks will be served. Transportation: In order to allow the district to offer this free option to our students we will NOT be able to provide transportation home in the evenings. Students must be picked up at. 5 National Elementary Honor Society Plans are being made for a September meeting for all National Elementary Honor Society members. There will be discussions on their chapter by-laws and planning for events for the school year. All members will need to be present. Student Volunteers Needed Do you have an interest in school wide happenings? Would you like to participate more in spreading interesting news and activity information around the school and community? Volunteer to write articles for our school newspaper! Our newspaper helps inform students and parents of important information about our school. It also highlights students who are making a difference in our school. Student Council Student Council is holding a clothing drive. If you have gently used clothes you don t need please consider donating them to Student Council. Drop off clothing items at the high school office with Mrs. McLain African Violets are being sold for $5.00 in Ms. Saccordo s room. The money is being donated to Student Council. They are starting to bloom. Come support Student Council and buy a happy little violet for yourself! More Covington Cross Country Highlights If you are truly interested in submitting written articles please stop by the library. Mrs. Plants would love to have student reporters for The Hoot. This picture appeared in the 1956 edition Upcoming Covington Tradition A long tradition at CISD, no one knows the origins of our annual Coronation/Carnival. Originally it was held in the fall after the farmers got their crops in and had a little extra money. Through the years, monies raised have been used to purchase many items for our students such as scholarships, playground equipment, athletic uniforms and classroom items. Each class, Pre-K through 12 th, chooses a Duke and Duchess to represent their class. One rule applies here: a student may not have the honor of being the Duke or Duchess two years in a row. After one year they are again eligible if the class so chooses to vote for them, except in the event that they are chosen as class favorite in the same year. No girl or boy may have the honor of being both in the same year (class favorite and Duke or Duchess). Once the Dukes and Duchesses are chosen, they begin planning fundraisers. Each penny raised is a vote for the couple. Fundraising activities may begin immediately. Usually, parents of the Duke and Duchess or the Duke and Duchess themselves decorate cans and place them at various businesses to collect money. Also, each Duke and Duchess is allowed to have one fundraiser at the school. All fundraising activities must be approved and scheduled through the campus principals. You may set up tables to raise money for Coronation at the football, and or volleyball games. The designated area at the football games are along the walk from the field house to the stands. At the volleyball games it is in the foyer. On the night of the Coronation, four Queens and Kings are crowned. There is a Queen and King crowned from the elementary (Pre-K through 2 nd grade), the intermediate (3rd through 5 th grade), and junior high school (6 th through 8 th grade) and the high school (9 th through 12 th ). The Queens and Kings are determined by the amount of money each couple collects. All of the money collected goes to the school and is used for scholarships, the educational field trip to Austin for the 7 th grade Texas History class, and any other unfunded projects for all students. The money is to be turned in at the administration office by 5:00 p.m. the day of Coronation and is counted by the Superintendent, Principals, and school board members. Kindergarten students serve as attendants to the Queens and Kings. It is a formal occasion. Therefore, the Dukes and boy attendants wear suits and the Duchesses and girl attendants wear formal dresses. When the Queens and Kings are crowned, they are robed with a long satin train trimmed in silver. The Queens receive a tiara and the Kings a scepter that they may keep as a memento of their reign. The robes, tiaras, scepters, and satin and laced pillows that are used by the attendants to carry the tiaras will be provided by the school. It is customary for the Duke to buy his Duchess a flower corsage and she to buy him a boutonniere. This is the responsibility of the Duke and Duchess parents. If the parents of the attendants wish, they may buy their child corsages or boutonnieres, but it is not required. Once the Queens and Kings are crowned, the program begins. Each class in the elementary performs a skit or dance routine. If any parent has any objection to their child or children dancing in the program, please let the teacher know as soon as possible so that other arrangements can be made. The students will practice their routines or skits during class hours. All students who wish to participate in the Coronation may do so. No class or child is left out of the program. This is not a required activity, but it is a great opportunity for your child to be a part of a very special night for the school.

From Coach Rodriguez I was pleased with the performances of each of our runners at the Cowtown Challenge on Saturday, August 25th. Klay Howard and Gerardo Cipres both were entered and ran up several divisions as they competed in the 6A and 5A 5k race. All of our runners ran at least one minute or more faster than at this time last season. I was very pleased with the effort of female runner, Valerie Cipres. Last fall at the Region 3 Championships, she missed out going to State by one place. She is definitely stronger at this point and seems very determined as we entered the early races in our schedule. We had a good off-season, have spent numerous hours in the weight room and a lot of miles on the course. Our runners looked strong on the course at Cowtown Challenge, not bothered by the fast pace and challenging hills out on the course at the Buff in Haltom City. We still have lots of work to do as we prepare for all the meets of our tough upcoming schedule. Our young Junior High Owls had their first meet on Wednesday, August 29th at the Blum Invitational at Segar Ranch in Blum, Texas. We will only run junior high at this meet as our high school runners will be at Hillsboro on Friday. Runner to watch: Defending District Champion Tymothy Gatton Top 10 Medalist last season at District - Hunter Payne and New Comers: Brazos Stewart and Joseph Willman. Our JH Boys could make a strong push at the District Championships this season as well.
