1 LAKE CITY HIGH SCHOOL December 2014/January 2015 NEWSLETTER 6101 Ramsey Road Coeur d Alene ID Phone (208) FAX (208) Attendance Office Phone (208) Counseling Office Phone (208) Skyward Family Access: skyward.cdaschools.org PRINCIPAL S MESSAGE. Each fall the EXCEL Board provides thousands of dollars to teachers in the Coeur d Alene School District for extra educational programs and equipment not provided in the regular district budget. On behalf of Lake City High School, its students and staff, we would like to thank the EXCEL Board for the work they do for our students. Once again LCHS and our teachers were honored and recognized as we enjoyed the Excel Big Event on Saturday, November 15 th. This year the following LCHS staff members were awarded EXCEL grants: Daniel Bell: What Goes Around Comes Around! Exploration in Rotational Motion, Look Out Below! Motion in Two Dimensions, Using Cars Instead of Trains: Playing with Constant Velocity, and Scales Are Mass ively Exciting. Cynthia Chapman: Uniquely You Conceptual Self Portraits Marissa Owen: Don t Be Bitter if you Can t Taste Bitter! What your genes can tell you about your palate. Sandra Seaton: Shakespeare Live!, Again our thanks to the EXCEL Board and its members, both present and past, for the remarkable contribution made to the Coeur d Alene school district. Using Skyward Family Access is an excellent way to review your student s academic progress, attendance and other important information. If you do not have login information, please contact the main office. Our thanks also to the parents who attended our parent conference night held November 25th. Between phone conferencing and actual in person conferences here at the school, we held over 1400 conferences. Again, we extend our thanks to all the parents who took the time to come in person or to communicate on the phone with our staff. For parents who were not able to attend this conference night but have questions regarding your son or daughter s progress at our school, please feel free to contact our Counseling Office at or the main office at to arrange for conferences. I would like to take this opportunity to express our sincere appreciation to Russ Blank and Mallory Cook for their heroic efforts with our annual food drive! Even during these trying financial times Russ and Mallory led the way guiding our staff and students in donating food for the Community Action Partnership. We know that our community depends on these donations and we appreciate Mr. Blank s and Ms. Cook s dedication to the program. He goes above and beyond the call of duty! During this holiday season it is our hope that everyone would look for opportunities to serve others and to enrich the lives of the people around us. I hope your Thanksgiving vacation was enjoyable and we wish you all a very Merry Christmas and wonderful New Year!

6 AP Environmental Science Students are getting excited for their annual Snow Science and Water Resources field trip! This February our class will embark to the cold, snowy mountains of Lookout Pass to investigate how the region s winter snow pack affects freshwater resource availability and uses here in North Idaho. By digging snow pits and measuring snow-water equivalency, students will use their own field data to help them determine how the snowpack of the Northwest Rockies has changed over the last 65 years and make predictions for how our community may need to adapt to these changes in the future. Lockers, Lockers, Lockers!! The office cannot be held responsible for lost or stolen items that are left at the front office because a student does not have a locker. For a one-time fee of $10, you will receive a locker to store all your valuables. You will get a new locker the next school year, at registration, and will not be charged for it. Each year, we have a handful of students in need of appropriate winter coats, pants, boots, gloves and hats to make it through our day of science in the snow. Our class would greatly appreciate donations of new or gently used snow gear to help make sure each and every student in class is ready for a safe and fun day of science in the field: -snow coats and jackets -snow pants -snow gloves or mittens -snow boots -warm winter hats Thank you! Jamie Esler AP Environmental Science jesler@cdaschools.org It is time for the Annual Holiday Poinsettia sale!! The LCHS Softball and Golf programs are selling festive poinsettias just in time for the holidays! They will be delivered on: Saturday, December 13 th to LCHS for pick up. They are 1 for $15 or 2 for $25. Please make checks payable to: LCHS Softball/or Golf All orders need to be in by Friday, December 5 th. Thank you and Happy Holidays!
7 The LCHS Elves (staff and students) have been busy collecting names of those who attend our school and need a little extra help during the holidays. It is a LCHS tradition to adopt students as well as their families to make the holidays feel brighter and promote the feeling that comes with giving to others. As you know the need is particularly greater during these cold winter months. Please consider sending a donation (big or small) to school with your student. Every dollar goes directly to a LCHS student/family in need. Mrs. Vining is in charge and will gladly accept all donations before and after school, or you may drop them by in the office during regular school hours beginning Monday, November 24 th through December 19 th. 8 Troupe de Wolfe News The Lake City Drama Department had a successful beginning for the school year. We produced the hilarious production, Epic Proportions by Larry Coen and David Craig. In November, we prepared forty students to compete at district drama at Lakeland High School; nineteen will travel to state the first weekend in December. State Drama takes place in Meridian this year at Rocky Mountain High School. The Rocky Mountain Drama team also happens to be coached by Lake City alum Erin (Haight) Davidson. The following list includes the qualifiers and their events. In Ensemble Serious acting: Ashley Holmes and Grace Warnick in Watermelon Boats and Evan Schwaab and Brandon Miller in Between Two Friends. In Ensemble Humorous acting: Sydney Bell and Piper Glover in Lost. In Original Serious acting: Mariah Alexander and Christian Emerson in Through Thick and Thin. In Original Humorous acting: Emily Dupree, Sean Behary and Christian Emerson in Just In Case. In Musical theatre acting: Mariah Alexander and Heather Portue in Guys and Dolls and Noah Garrett and Trenton Klinkefus in How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying. In Pantomime, Heather Portue will perform her original work The Glass Slipper. In Solo Acting Serious: Calli Butler performs My Mother s Touch and Lindsay Montgomery will perform Medea. In Solo Humorous: Briitney Ellenbecker is performing Dental Mania, Trenton Klinkefus is performing Those Late Night WW II Movies and Apollo Rose is performing an excerpt from Brothers Grimm Spectaculathon. Four qualified in Solo Audition acting: Piper Glover with Blind Dog and Blue Streak ; Sydney Bell with Mother s Touch and Just a Slice ; Oskar Owens with Freak Show and Memphis ; and Grace Warnick with Nunsense and Inside a Seashell. Sydney Bell also qualified in Costume Design for her work on Upstairs and Downstaris. AUDITIONS! Two auditions are coming: Auditions for Dancing at Lughnasa! Day One Tuesday December 16 th Meet at Room B-11 and turn in your Resumes and Headshots and sign up for an audition spot. We will begin at 3:00 and you may leave after you have finished your audition. These will be closed auditions (one person at a time, no spectators except the directors). The call back list for students being seriously considered for rolls will be posted by 8:00 am the following morning and probably on Facebook overnight. Day Two Wednesday, December 17 th Call Back Auditions Students who make the call back list should report to the Blue Room (B-11) by 2:50 to sign in. Students will be grouped in scenes with two or more characters and have until 3:10 to read, practice and interpret the scenes. These auditions will be open, with other call back students as audience. Please plan to stay for the entire audition time, possibly as late as 6 pm. Break a leg! See me, Mr. Bell or any experienced actors/actresses with questions. --Mrs. Seaton
9 Tips for Preparing Your Auditions (especially for Day ONE) Choosing a scene: Choose the scene that best shows your ability to develop a character in addition to one you might like to play. Not every role is included in the audition scene cutting, so you should focus on what characters are most similar to one you would like to play. Think realistically about how your age and physical characteristics add to a character. Remember to think about the context of the scene, the relationship between the characters in the scene and the style/personality of each group in the play. Each person and group (older vs. younger) have very different characteristics and behaviors. The director is looking to see how you are able to adapt and create DIFFERENT characters. Practice the scenes out loud, not just in your head! Movement in acting is often just as important as speaking the lines clearly and with feeling. Consider what physical attributes, body language, posture and use of stage space help the scene and character come to life. Packets are outside the drama room pick them up and give your-self time to prepare. BLUE ROOM IMPROV last show for 2014! Friday, December 12 th at 7 pm, admission is only $4 and $3 with a Lake City ASB. This is our Christmas show! So naturally we need to see what would happen if the Blue Room Improv team was hired to be Santa s helpers in his workshop. Sounds like all kinds of fun and all kinds of trouble.
