1 THE UTE SALUTE December 2018 Glenn Raymond School Disaster and Destruction by: Alyssa Waugh The California wildfires have been awful this year. At press time, there had been a total of 7,983 fires burning up to 1,824,505 acres of land. 106 people have died, including 6 firefighters trying to stop the fires. The worst wildfire in California history, known as the Campfire, began on November 8, 2018 and was not fully contained until November 25, This particular fire consumed an entire town, Paradise, California, and destroyed more structures than the state s other seven worst wildfires combined. The fires moved faster than anyone has ever seen, mainly due to the drought-like conditions in California most of the summer. Some people in California are starting to see these fires as normal due to climate change, while others think that humans are the cause of the fires, with high winds spreading the fires. Pritzker had a total of 2,382,536 votes while Bruce Rauner was runner up with 1,723,015 votes. Rauner would be going for his second term if he won the election again. Most counties of the state voted for Bruce Rauner, but the few counties that voted for Pritzker had a lot higher population of people vote for him, which resulted in J.B Pritzker winning the election. Pritzker has plans for Illinois to help make it an even better state. These plans include better child education and his own healthcare plans. Pritzker has an extensive background in business, along with the development of many companies. Time will yet reveal the promises of Pritzker. 2 On October 26th, the students of Glenn Raymond School traveled to WCHS to enjoy a presentation by a man named Ben Glenn, who is a motivational speaker and chalk artist. He explained about his life, and then amazed us with his fabulous chalk drawings. For a while, Ben talked about his life, starting with when he was a kid. He explained all of the facts about when he was in school. He talked about memories that he had about his children and himself. Then, Ben played some music, Ben Glenn Presentation by: Marisa Clark grabbed some chalk, and started creating art on a giant board. He finished his picture, and then let many students ask a few questions. He gave more information about his art. Ben has an interesting life and made beautiful chalk art. The piece he made during our assembly was given to WCHS. Chalk artist and motivational speaker Ben Glenn draws an original piece during the assembly at WCHS. Watseka/Crescent City Consolidation by: Codi Krueger An important issue that is affecting our school district is the talk of maybe consolidating our schools with Crescent City. Talking about consolidating the schools in our county isn t anything really new, but this is the first time that any of our schools have gotten this close. Voters in both towns will decide in April 2019 whether the two school districts should merge together. Crescent City has had decreas- Both school districts, Watseka and Crescent City, would have to vote YES on the April ballot in order for a consolidation of the districts to move forward. ing enrollment for many years and only has a K-8 building open now. Watseka has dealt with flooding issues and decreasing enrollment and is looking for a way to close Nettie Davis School, which has experienced a lot of flooding issues. One solution would be to merge both districts and use the Crescent City elementary building and have 3rd and 4th graders go there and send Kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd graders to Wanda Kendall. It s hard to say what will happen. There have been some meetings about consolidation and more will happen in early If people vote yes, the new district would begin in the fall of President George H.W. Bush Dies by: Sayge Sowers Our country s 41st President, George H.W. Bush, died on November 30, 2018 at 7:05am of a blood infection. Bush was Vice-President under Ronald Reagan from and became our President from 1988 until His son, George Bush, was also our 43rd President from George H.W. Bush was a Na- vy fighter pilot in WWII and was probably most famous for being President during the end of the Cold War and for a huge period of growth in the country s economy during his Presidency. He ran for re-election in 1992, but lost to Bill Clinton. George H.W. Bush and his wife, Barbara, were really popular public figures and had six children. Caption describing picture or graphic. 3 GRS Winter Concert by: Moriah Pueschell On December 18th, the GRS music program held their winter concert. Each choir, taught by Mr. Conley, performed two songs. Also, our GRS bands, taught by Mr. Parmenter, each performed 3 songs. Everyone did such an amazing job and put everyone in the holiday spirit. The fifth grade band performed the classic Jingle Bells and their choir did as well, but in a different version. The seventh and eighth grade band performed a version of The Bell Carol. In the 6th grade choir, there were two solos performed by Quinn Starkey and Megan Martin in You re a Mean One Mr. Grinch. In the 7 and 8th grade choir, there was a duet by Payton Anderson and Daniel Navas. I think it s safe to say that this winter, the music department outdid themselves. Whether your instrument is your voice or a saxophone, be sure check out band and choir! GRS Builder s Club Visits Heritage Woods by: Daytin Thompson Thirteen members of the GRS Builder s Club visited Heritage Woods recently to bring some holiday cheer to the residents. Students sang Christmas carols, did a Readers Theatre, and mingled and visited with the residents. Accompanied by Builder s Club leaders Mrs. Dickte and Mrs. Luecke, the students spent about an hour on the activities with the residents and greatly enjoyed the experience. These students plan to visit various elderly residential facilities each month as part of an outreach within the community. Well done GRS students! IESA Speech Contest by: Moriah Pueschell GRS Builder s Club students visit Heritage Woods residents. Last month some of the students from Glenn Raymond traveled to the IESA Speech Contest at PBL. Participating in speech contest is something students work for all fall, as they get ready for their individual, duet, group, or improvisation speeches. In speech one person up to about a five person group memorizes lines and performs them in classes until the competition. They all are assigned coaches to help the participants get ready with anything they needed. Some of the coaches include Mrs. Curry, Mrs. Simpson, Mrs. Mueller and Miss Johnson. The GRS participants did very well and received many first and second place awards. The contest was an awesome way to spend the day, and you should definitely join next year! The Ute Salute Page 3
4 GRS Boys Basketball by: Caden Curtis It s that time of year again GRS boys basketball season! The season started back in October with hard work and effort and now, that hard work is paying off as we head into the second half of our schedule. The 7th and 8th grade teams have played in multiple games so far with a winning record. We have played teams like Momence, St. Anne, and Tri-Point. At press time, both teams had lost in the Conference Tournament, but we had a record of six wins and four losses. Coaches Eric Starkey and John Hutchinson put a lot of effort into the teams, and they try to make us better at the sport. We have some tough games coming up against Milford and JL Nash, with the County Tournament right after the winter break. Lets go Utes! GRS Girls Volleyball by: Natalie Petersen Volleyball became an official Olympic sport in 1964 during the Summer Games in Tokyo, Japan. The GRS girls volleyball season has started! Tryouts were held on Thursday, December 6th and Friday, December 7th and eve- ryone who attended worked very hard. Sadly not everyone could make the team, but even with knowing at the beginning that there may be cuts, every girl gave their best effort. Coaching the teams this year are Mrs. Bruens and Miss Bunting. The first official game for volleyball is on January 11 vs. Momence and there will be many more exciting games following that. Good luck in your volleyball season ladies! GRS Girls Basketball by: Marisa Clark The GRS Girls Basketball team ended the year with a great season. Throughout the school year, the girls worked very hard to get as many victories as possible. They played in three tournaments: Conference, County, and Regionals. During the conference tournament, they had many close games and, eventually, the 7th grade team earned third place. Also, there were four teams competing in the county tournament, and 7th grade became the county champs. Later, regionals came along and they played great games. Unfortunately, both teams lost in a few very close games, ending the 2018 season. the season 14-6 and the 8th grade -10 Coach Newell, Coach DePatis, Coach Swartz, and Coach Norder created a great team this year. The girls played hard and learned so much about basketball. They had a good season with hard-working players and achieved a lot of their goals. Well done girls! Page 4
5 GRS Honor Roll Assembly by: Elizabeth Wittenborn school we had an awards assembly. Students that had a grade point average of 3.0 to 4.0 were announced on Honor Roll. There were a total of 184 students that were on the Honor Roll for 1st quarter, which is more than 55% of our student body! Along with there being many students on honor roll, there were many Students of the Month. This year the staff is trying something new. The students are chosen by each teacher in each class for the month. This gives the opportunity for many more students to be recognized for their talents. We hope to see many more earn Student of the Month and make it on Honor Roll in the future!
