1 Tonight is our annual Ice Cream Social. I hope you can find time in your evening to come out and let our staff serve you a scoop (or two) with all of the toppings. One of the special characteristics of Puster Elementary is the community involvement and we want to take every opportunity to tell you thank you for the support and trust you give us to educate your children. Tonight is one of those opportunities and there will be more throughout the year. I have communicated with you over the past few weeks about my desire to do something more to help the victims of Hurricane Harvey. I have worked with Ashley Steed, Aimee Peay and Alison Smithwick to find ways we can help the children find some sort of normalcy as they return to the classrooms. I have included a link below if you would like to join us in helping to send the students of Carroll Elementary in Northeast Houston with proper clothing (standard dress is required at their school) and supplies. We will support the students and staff throughout this school year. If you would like to participate, these donations should be dropped off at Puster Elementary anytime between now and October 10th. A team of us will deliver these items and record video footage of the impact we hope to make for others in their time of need. My hope is that we also make an impact on our students and instill in them the values of doing good things for others during a time when our world seems so selfish at times. If you sign up, please discuss with your child the impact your family is making and how we are hopefully making someone else s life a little bit better. 2 Foundation for Lovejoy Schools NEW! North Texas Giving Day: Thank You The Foundation for Lovejoy Schools would like to say thank you to the Lovejoy Community for raising over $108,000 from 402 donors on North Texas Giving Day. The Foundation is well on their way to reaching their goal of receiving donations from 650 donors totaling $200,000 by December 31st. Every gift is valuable to the mission of enhancing education in Lovejoy. If you are considering making a donation to the Foundation, please click here for more information. Men s Tailgate Tournament: October 11 It is time for the men to sign up for the Men s Tailgate Tournament. Join us for food, beer, and a cornhole tournament. The tournament is double elimination, so everyone is guaranteed to play two games. The tournament will be held at the home of John and Kris Dunaway in Lucas. Sponsors for the event are Renfro Dunaway Group, Lee Lewis, Nine Band Brewing, Tom Grisak Estate Homes Realtors, Estate Life Magazine - Lucas and Fairview, Chick-fil-A of Allen, and the Dunaway Family. For more information and to register to for the event click on the following link: Men's Tailgate Registration. Wednesday, October 11 6:30 PM 120 McMillen, Lucas, Texas Lunchroom Visitors (PreK-4) You are welcome to have lunch with your child throughout the year. Please keep in mind that you may only bring food for your child to eat. We have many students on campus with food allergies and this will ensure that students are not put at risk. Also, just as in years past, we ask that only you and your child sit at the designated tables closest to the hallway windows. Morning Drop Off This routine will stay the same as in years past. Cars will enter the north driveway and come to the back of the campus. Either staff or Safety Crew students will be waiting to assist your child out of the car. On the first day of school, students will go immediately to their classroom regardless of what time they arrive. Beginning on August 22, students who arrive before 7:45 AM will report to the cafeteria (3 rd /4 th graders) or the gym (KG, 1 st, 2 nd graders). They will then move to their classes when the bell rings at 7:45 AM. Afternoon Pick Up Students will be dismissed at 3:05. Car riders will be dismissed to the back of the campus. Please have your car number visible so this procedure will go as smoothly as possible. If you plan to walk up to the front door to pick up your
3 child, we will ask that you wait outside until the bus riders come through the front door. We will then release your child to you. This ensures the buses get out in a timely manner, as well as, we know exactly who your child is leaving campus with. The safety of your children trumps everything else we do at Puster. 4 Summer Reading Goal If your student was a top reader, he/she will receive an invitation to a Bahama Bucks party that will take place in the courtyard (weather permitting) on September 28 from 3:05-3:30. We are looking forward to celebrating together! Book Fair Thursday, September 21, we hope to see you at the Ice Cream Social from 6:30-7:30. The book fair will be open during this time. On Friday, September 22, the book fair opens at 7:30 am and will close at 8:30 am due to the early release at noon. We will be packing up the fair for the remainder of the morning. Book Clubs Second through fourth graders will begin hearing about book club offerings starting next week on morning announcements. Book clubs are completely optional and for FUN. Students may indicate interest in participation by completing the Google Form on the library website. Here are the book club basics: Students bring their own books. These may be personal copies, library copies, or e-reader versions. If you have trouble obtaining a book, please reach out to Mrs. Smithwick. Students meet with the book club one day a week during the lunch period. It is easiest for students to bring their lunches on book club days in order to avoid missing discussion while standing in the lunch line. A reading schedule is provided. Students read on their own in between meetings so that we can spend most of the time talking the book and highlighting favorite parts of the story. Readers of all abilities are welcome. This is a low pressure, inclusive group. The group works best when members have joined based on interest. There will be more than one book club opportunity this year. If the first book doesn't appeal to your student, he/she may want to wait until the next book club.
