Newsletter/Pānui August 2016 Kia ora whānau, We kicked off the start of the Olympics with a wonderful opening ceremony courtesy of Rooms 8 and 13 at our full school assembly last Friday. It was colourful and exciting just like Rio de Janeiro. The Olympics provide us with many valuable learning opportunities such as the value of sports, competition, winning, losing, geography, history, visual arts, culture, drama and, of course, excitement. Stay tuned for our own Olympics Day planned for next week. The flu season is upon us with many staff and children succumbing to the winter chills. It is timely to remember the basics of frequent hand washing, considerate coughing (into your elbow) practices to help prevent the spread of germs. The Team Harakeke, year 3, classes provided an entertaining and well prepared morning of plays today well done Team! Go New Zealand! Ngā mihi nui Lee Lee McArthur Principal / Tumuaki Contact us! 91 Sparks Road, Hoon Hay, Christchurch Absentee Line: Absentee Cell: office@hoonhay.school.nz w. hoonhay.school.nz Bank Account: f
A huge welcome to Millie W, Hannah B & Phoenix T. Congratulations to the following tamariki for recently receiving a Principal s Award: Harper D, Bodie A, Ruby C, Harmony H, Abigail W, Annabel W, Zoe S, Eden M, Laylah B, Paul F, Jaxon A, Latai T, Sergi D-G, Madison R, Emilia L, Bella S, Ollie W & Caitlin S. Rā whānau! Jamie R, Linkin F, Micah L, Tayla D, Emily H, Skye G, Bella H, Evie J, Kean S, Marena S, Kaylin J, Lily P, Harry O D, Kiya C-C, & Taylor E.
Wolves and Sheep Maths Solving Problem Sheep and wolves is a fabulous problem to work collaboratively to solve. Some Legend and some Team Koru children have been having some success with this. What we know: Wolves can eat any sheep that is in a direct line (not just the next door square the whole line) from their square vertical, horizontal and diagonal. Have fun! A field is arranged 4 rows of 4 squares (16 in total). There are 3 wolves in the field and some sheep (more than 1), each in their own square. How many sheep can be placed on separate squares and be safe? Make sure you prove it! More Wolves, More Sheep, More Fun! Now there are 5 rows of 5 squares (25 in total). The same safe sheep rules apply. Can you place 5 wolves and 3 sheep, so that the sheep are safe? Problem solving is what mathematicians do. When children problem solve they get a chance to collaborate, to come up with creative solutions and trial their ideas. It helps develop mathematical reasoning.
What else are we great at? Well done to Jess M for her hard work at the Balmoral Dance Club where she received lots of certificates for her amazing Irish dancing! Ka pai Miss Hansen Miss Hansen is Captain of the womens University Rugby Team that won the Championship this season, for the 3 rd year in a row. Some of the girls from Rm 21 were on hand to help her carry the trophy! Photo of the Week! Harry O D or Harry Potter? Harry received some awesome birthday presents this week and wore them to school! How awesome doesn t he look amazing! Happy Birthday Harry!
Legends Bake Sale for the SPCA On Tuesday the 2nd of August we (Sally, Sam, Evie and Juliet), held a bake sale in the hall at lunch time. We also got a few blankets. We are really looking forward to going to the SPCA to give them the money and blankets. Nice One Girls!
