We here at LEEP are very appreciative of their dedication to making LEEP's programming and Special Olympics sports so successful and fun over the last year. Each and every volunteer has made a lasting impact on LEEP and our participants, and we hope to see each and every one of you again in the future. We wish you all success in achieving your future goals! 2017 SUMMER REC NEW AND IMPROVED 10 WEEK PROGRAM Warm weather is just around the corner, and that means Summer Recreation registration is now open! The Summer Rec Program is a life enrichment program designed for students in transition who have an intellectual disability. The goal of the program is to increase independence in daily living skills by combining recreation and leisure activities in a structured, safe and supervised environment. New in 2017, LEEP will be partnering with the University of Minnesota Extension to bring a 4-H Club to LEEP. Rec Center Ages: years old (who will attend school in the school year to qualify) Program Dates: June 5 - August 11, 2017 (10 weeks) Times: Monday Friday 8:00 am-4:30 pm Additional care hours 7:30-8:00 am and 4:30-5:00 pm Cost: 10 weeks for the low price of $1,350 ($135 per week) *Registration opens March 1, 2017 For a registration packet and more information, call our office at or visit our website at NEW ONE WEEK SUMMER CAMPS New in 2017 LEEP will offer week long Summer Camps Rec Center Ages: years old (who will attend school in the school year to qualify) Program Dates: June 19-23, July 17-21, and August 14-18, 2017 Times: Monday Friday 8:00 am-4:30 pm with additional care hours 7:30-8:00 am and 4:30-5:00 pm Cost: $150 per camp *Minimum of 5 registrants per camp required **Registration opens March 1, 2017 For a registration packet and more information, call our office at or visit our website at 2

3 SPECIAL OLYMPICS INFORMATION In order to participate in Special Olympic sports, athletes must complete an Athlete Application for Participation. All sections must be completed, signed, require a doctor s signature, physical and background check. Forms will not be accepted if not completed fully. Once completed, the application must be turned into the LEEP Office and LEEP will submit the form to the Special Olympics Minnesota s (SOMN) office. This application does not guarantee acceptance into the Special Olympics program until official word is received from SOMN. Forms must be updated every three years to continue participation. Athletes are not allowed to participate in Special Olympics practices or tournaments without a current completed form. If you are in question as to whether you have this form completed, please call LEEP at and we can verify it for you. This form must be updated every three years, if it is not up to date, the athlete will not be able to practice or compete until cleared by Special Olympics Minnesota. All athletes must be a paid LEEP Member before participating in any LEEP activities. After the athletes have registered for their sports, LEEP will mail out specific information regarding practice times, tournament dates, what to wear, etc. Special Olympics is available for anyone over the age of 8 years old. LEEP will attempt to place younger athletes together. This can be used for Special Events, Night Activities, Classes, Youth Programming and Special Olympic Sports. This is the perfect opportunity to enjoy the warm spring weather while staying active and catching up with friends. Join LEEP for this fun and exciting league that will train you to complete a 5K (3.1 miles). To reach our goal we will work on pacing ourselves as we increase our distance each practice. Then we will join in the fun to raise money for LEEP and the LCARC 6th annual LCARC 5K Fun Run and Walk on Saturday, June 10. *Cost includes staffing, registration into the Fun Run and Walk (which includes a T-shirt), and transportation to the race. 4 FAREWELL TO STAFF Please join us in wishing Martha Garvey, Ryan Trench, Mel Pederson, Sammy Zahn and Megan Voss well as they move on from LEEP to bigger things. They have each brought their own unique set of skills and personality and have done some exceptional work with our organization. We wish them all nothing but the best in their future endeavors. Martha will be heading to the Twin Cities to pursue a new opportunity made available to her. Her last day will be on May 2. Mel will be graduating this spring and fulfilling her dream of becoming a Special Education teacher. Her last day will be May 5th. Ryan will be graduating this spring and moving forward with his career in therapeutic recreation. His last day will be May 14th. Sammy will be heading to Romania/ Transylvania this summer to take part in an anthropological dig. Her last day will be in June. Megan will be spending the summer pursuing her passion for racing and working her other job. She will stay on as an Athletics coach through June. 4

6 CLUBS T-SHIRT FUN CLUB Need something new to spruce up your wardrobe? Why not join us at LEEP to make two new shirts. We will be using two new techniques to make some colorful personalized t-shirts. Each technique is easy and fun to create. If there is time we will make a custom tote bag for those summer trips to the beach*cost of class includes: staffing and supplies. Dates: Wednesdays, May Time: 0 no transportation $40 with one way transportation $50 with two way transportation SPECIAL EVENTS FESTIVAL OF NATIONS Saturday, May 6 For nearly 85 years, the Festival of Nations has inspired people throughout the region to discover more about our world and embrace the rich cultural diversity brought to us by immigrants from around the globe. In 2017, the Festival will continue its legacy as the longest running multicultural festival in the Midwest and, once again, collaborate with more than 90 ethnic groups to create a truly unique experience one that celebrates cultural heritage and provides our community s immigrants with a platform to express their stories through world-class performances, exhibits, ethnic cuisine and personal connections. *Cost includes staffing, event and drop off transportation, 1 meal, and 1 admission ticket. Meet at LEEP: 10:00am Pickups: Start at 9:00am Drop offs: 4:00-5:00pm Cost: $65 KING LEAR AT GUSTAVUS ADOLPHUS Saturday, May 20 Join LEEP as we head to Gustavus Adolphus for the Shakespeare Classic King Lear. After years of ruling Britain in peace, a respected King Lear decides to relinquish his crown and divide his kingdom among his three daughters. But when their love and loyalty falter, so does Lear s sanity. King Lear is a gripping portrait of fathers, daughters and a once-mighty ruler thwarted by his own hubris and betrayed by a vanishing mind. After the Play we will head to El Agave for some Mexican food. *Cost of event includes: 1 meal, staffing, event and drop-off transportation. Watch the spectacular show of school bus races, outhouse races, bull rides and ending the night is NASCAR racing. Before the show, we stop in St. Peter and eat a quick dinner at Arby s. Enjoy this themed cruise and the scenery around you while feeling the breeze of the fresh air against your face on the top deck of the boat. Each guest will receive a Hawaiian Lei as they board. We are looking for all horse lovers for our brand new Adapted Horseback riding class. What better way to spend a summer night than on a beautiful horse. There will also be a cart and buggy available for anyone who doesn t want to ride a horse. *Cost of class includes: staffing, hour-long riding session and drop-off transportation. July 19, 2017 LEEP Summer Fest is a BRAND NEW event, to honor the contributions people with disabilities make to our greater Mankato Community. This year s LEEP Summer Fest will take place at Franklin Rogers Park and feature a live performance by IV Play, a dance, games, a hamburger and hotdog buffet and door prizes. In addition each ticket will include a complimentary LEEP Summer Fest T-shirt. The event is open to anyone interested, however, you must purchase your tickets in advance. Ticket sales will begin in June and will be available for purchase at the LEEP office, at LEEP events and online, all caregivers, guardians and guests must purchase tickets. Please purchase your ticket to save your spot as soon as possible because space is limited. Phone registration is not permitted. SEVERE WEATHER REMINDER LEEP is not responsible for supervision of participants before or after designated program start and end times. Because of this LEEP would like to remind guardians and staff it is their responsibility to ALWAYS check participants in with LEEP Staff. We want to provide a safe environment for all participants who attend LEEP events. In case of bad weather, please call and listen to the recorded message to know if our program has been cancelled.
