It is very helpful for LEEP to always have updated information regarding any address change, staff change, emergency contact, and/or medical history. 2 SPECIAL OLYMPICS INFORMATION In order to participate in Special Olympic sports, athletes must complete an Athlete Application for Participation. All sections must be completed, signed, require a doctor s signature, physical and background check. Forms will not be accepted if not completed fully. Once completed, the application must be turned into the LEEP Office and LEEP will submit the form to the Special Olympics Minnesota s (SOMN) office. This application does not guarantee acceptance into Special Olympics program until official word is received from SOMN. Forms must be updated every three years to continue participation. Athletes are not allowed to participate in Special Olympics practices or tournaments without a current completed form. If you are in question as to whether you have this form completed, please call LEEP at and we can verify it for you. This form must be updated every three years, if it is not up to date, the athlete will not be able to practice or compete until cleared by Special Olympics Minnesota. All athletes must be a paid LEEP Member before participating in any LEEP activities. After the athletes have registered for their sports, LEEP will mail out specific information regarding practice times, tournament dates, what to wear, etc. Special Olympics is available for anyone over the age of 8 years old. LEEP will attempt to place younger athletes together. Each year LEEP joins the movement to help raise awareness that the R-word hurts. HALF of the money raised through LEEP s campaign will directly support the LEEP team! If you know that you will not be attending any of the tournaments, let us know as soon as possible because we have a waiting list for basketball participants. As more information becomes available we will inform athletes regarding tournament details UNIFIED JUNIORS Starting in March -Unified Juniors, a 9 week long program, for children ages 8-21 years of with and without intellectual disabilities is back! This program will introduce children to the world of competitive sports in a gradual, fun and non-intimidating manner. Participants will gain knowledge and experience of Special Olympic Sports as well as the play unified movement. The sports we focus on are as follows: Athletics (Track and Field), Aquatics, Basketball, Flag Football, Poly Hockey, Soccer, Softball, Tennis, and Volleyball Dates: Tuesdays March 15-May 10 Time: 5:30-7:00pm Locations: Vary upon sport (Schedule will be mailed out upon registration) Cost: $15 Contact t Ali McGuire by at athletics@mankatoleep.org with any questions or to get your athlete or unified partner registered! 2

3 LEAGUES MALL WALK AND TALK LEEP s classic Mall Walk and Talk Club is back! Gather your friends and head to the River Hills Mall. This is the perfect opportunity to stay active during the cold months and to catch up with friends. Don t forget your walking shoes! Players can expect to have a blast, develop hockey and useful sportsmanship skills! If you answered yes, then this is the club for you! Join us as we spend the next three weeks learning how to prepare 3 different pizza inspired dishes. VOLUNTEER OF THE MONTH LEEP is excited to recognize Chad Ziemke as the February Volunteer of the Month for his dedication to making a difference in the lives of individuals with disabilities. Chad has been volunteering with LEEP s Fundraising Committee for a year and half and has also volunteered at LEEP Legends. Chad was a key player in the success of LEEP s Sweat 2 the Max campaign. He organized Fitness for $10 s Sweat 2 the Max Challenge and was able to recruit more than 15 people to complete the burpees and raised $250 to support LEEP programming! LEEP participants are very lucky to have volunteers like Chad advocating for them! February 22: Dessert Fruit Pizza ANNOUNCEMENT Mandy will be out on maternity leave starting February 1, 2017 to await the arrival of the new addition to her family. The LEEP board and administrative team will keep LEEP running in her absence. Mel has been with LEEP since 2013 and we couldn t be happier. Our participants absolutely love Mel and her infectious upbeat personality! Mel brings her creativity, smile, and laughter to every event and she is one of the hardest workers you ll find. We are very lucky to have Mel on our team. This program offers a chance for students as young as 10 to build relationships and partake in activities like games, special trips, crafts, and guest speakers will be offered on a weekly basis through LEEP. Make new friends, learn new sports and games, and develop new skills to help your youth become more independent! *Programming begins at 3:15pm. Rec Center Program Dates: Mondays January 23-May 22, 2017 (Teen Rec will not meet on March 27, 2017) Cost: 17 sessions for the low price of $255- $15.00 a session Time: Pick up after school until 5:00pm *Pick up transportation offered for schools within our transportation area for no additional cost. *Programming will begin at 3:15pm. This party will include building you own stuffed animal complete with a heart, adoption certificate, bows, and we will even deisgn a shirt for your new pal to wear. We will also play some games, such as bingo, and enjoy some pizza for dinner. We will be revisiting the era that brought the world The Rubik's Cube, Max Headroom and The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comes this "totally awesome" musical in the style of movies such as Back To The Future,Ferris Bueller's Day Off, The Karate Kid and The Wedding Singer. Some of these activities include testing your Star Wars IQ in the Jedi Trials, building jitterdroids, launching stargliders, creating stop motion animations with toys, compete with wind powered pod racers, and more.
