1 929 North 4 th Street Mankato, MN info@mankatoleep.org March 2014 A Note from the Director, Mandy Hunecke March is here and not only does that mean the weather is going to get warmer, it also means Special Olympics Tournament time! Our 8 basketball teams and 13 swimmers will be competing in Regional and State Tournaments. Family, friends and staff are always encouraged to attend these events and we d love to see you there. More information about these events can be found on our website: Speaking of Special Olympics, last month we had over 30 plungers take a leap in to a frozen pond in support of our Special Olympics athletes. They raised over $5,000 as a team. A portion of the funds raised online will come directly back to our team to help offset competition fees. Though the water was cold the team agreed they were freezin for a reason! With summer right around the corner we have begun planning all of our warm weather favorites. As always, we are continuously looking for new programming ideas and we d love to hear from you! We look forward to seeing you this month and can t wait to continue serving you in the future. Spring Fling Dance Grab your friends and join us to dance the night away. This month we ll celebrate the coming of our long awaited spring! Pop and water will be for sale for $1. Caregivers get in for free. Date: March 21, 2014 Cost: $7 Time: 7-9 pm Location: Mankato National Guard Armory 100 Martin Luther King Drive Help Spread the Word to End the R-word In 2008, Special Olympics started a website to help in the fight against the use of the R-word. According to their website, The R-word is the word 'retard(ed)'. Why does it hurt? The R-word hurts because it is exclusive. It s offensive. It s derogatory. The R-word is hate speech. On Wednesday, March 5, 2014 take the pledge online at to help promote a new R-word, RESPECT. LEEP believes the use of the r-word is inappropriate and more importantly, hurtful. Please join us in support of this project. Vacation Opportunities Summer will be here before we know it and you know what that means- LEEP s Vacation package is on its way! LEEP has taken some fabulous vacations in years past, and this year is no different! We look forward to continuing to travel around the world with you. A new opportunity we have begun to offer is the option for personalized vacations. Have you ever wanted to take a trip with 3 of your best friends or roommates but didn t know where/how to get started? Give us a call and we can work with you on your budget to help make your dreams come true! When you receive your package, take some time to read through the policies and registration procedures as some things have changed. Please pay special attention to the changes in deposit amounts and payment due dates. In order for LEEP to ensure we do our best to accommodate our traveler s needs we will be strictly adhering to these. Vacation registrations are requested by Tuesday, April 8, If you have suggestions of a place you would like to visit please contact Mandy Hunecke by at: director@mankatoleep.org or by calling the LEEP Office at
