2 Derby Days 2009 On behalf of the brothers of the Sigma Chi Fraternity at James Madison University, we would like to welcome you to Derby Days The idea of raising funds for charity while enjoying the spirit of competition between sororities began as a challenge that took years to accomplish. It is with sincere appreciation that we thank each of your organizations for participating in our program, and we hope that with continued support in the years to come that Derby Days will become JMU s largest organizational fundraiser. The tradition of Sigma Chi s Derby Days began in the spring of 1933 at the Alpha Bet a chapter at the University of California-Berkeley, under the name Channingway Derby. Located on Channing Way, the Alpha Beta Sigma Chi s sponsored an event composed of a series of humorous skit s. In fact, one publication later cited the Channingway Derby as California s most amusing tradition. Thanks Again and Let the Games Begin! From there, the spirit of Derby Days began to grow and in the 1960 s became a staple in Sigma Chi chapters around the nation. Derby Days 2009 would not have been accomplished if it were not for the overwhelming support from the H arrisonburg and James Madison University Greek community. All of the money raised this year will go towards our national philanthropies, the Children s Miracle Network and the Huntsman Cancer Foundation. Again, Sigma Chi would like to thank you for your participation in Derby Days We hope everyone has a very safe, fun and exciting week! Sigma Chi Derby Days Sincerely, Sigma Chi Frat ernity, James Madison University 23 2
