2 YEAR 7, ORIENTATION DAY It was wonderful to see the obvious enthusiasm and enjoyment of our incoming Year 7 as they participated in Friday s orientation programme. The opportunity to become familiar with various School routines and to spend the day with House Captains and staff goes a long way to putting aside any potential anxieties or fears of the unknown, which can creep in during the Christmas holiday break. Our thanks not only to our Prefects and House Captains, but also to the Master of the Middle School, Mr Barr, his executive assistant, Ms Nguyen, and the Deputy Master of the Middle School, Mr Galluzzo, who oversaw and planned the arrangements and, of course, the Middle School Housemasters and all those who supported them in delivering the Orientation Day programme on this important day. 4 From the Deputy Head Master Billeting Opportunity Dear Parents, Trinity has a very close relationship with the RDFZ and every other year Trinity hosts a group of approximately 10 students as part of an exchange programme between our schools. On the alternate years, Trinity sends a group of students on a tour of China and these students are hosted for a similar period of time in Beijing by RDFZ families. It can be a very rewarding experience to host an overseas student from our sister school. The RDFZ students will be coming to Trinity in February as part of the exchange programme and will attend classes as well as going on excursions in and around Sydney. The students will require billeting from Friday, 3rd February until Friday, 10th February RDFZ do not charge our students for staying at their school when our students are on exchange to them and we are hoping that Trinity host families will be able to reciprocate the generosity of the RDFZ community. If you are interested in discussing the opportunity to billet a RDFZ student, please contact Mrs Helen McFarlane on or by hmcfarlane@trinity.nsw.edu.au. 8 A Vision Fulfilled What hath God wrought! These words sent in his eponymous code by inventor Samuel Morse, were the first ever to be sent in that form. As we approach the end of 2016, we at Trinity may sincerely echo this sentence, for, after opening the New Aquatic and Centenary Centre in February, we opened the new Field Studies Centre at Woollamia in the Jervis Bay area in November. Continuing the work done at Pine Bluff during the last twenty years or so, this new complex, magnificent in concept, design and execution, is foundational for the School s future development of its students in emphasising the aims of their holistic education in an area of bushland which among much else, will lead them to a greater understanding of the natural environment, themselves as responsible individuals responding to the challenges of that environment, and a fuller understanding and appreciation of the culture of those whose land we share. The Field Studies Centre at Woollamia is the culmination of a process that began, in effect, long ago in the time of Mr F H J Archer in 1919 during an evacuation necessitated by the influenza outbreak of The subsequent decades saw the development of the idea of outdoor education for boys, and the idea finally took firm shape in 1987 when the Pine Bluff property was acquired through the largesse of Mr Reg Marsh, an Old Trinitarian who was himself evacuated in The development of the outdoor education principle was reinforced by the experiences of Mr Rod West, Head Master who had worked previously at Geelong Grammar s ground-breaking Timbertop, and Mr Milton Cujes ( 68), who in 1980 was appointed Foundation Head of Caulfield Grammar s Wheelers Hill Campus, which specialised in outdoor education objectives. Pine Bluff served the School nobly as its dedicated outdoor Campus for twenty-one years, but as situations changed, and after a transitional period at the Anglican Youth works site in the Shoalhaven area, the 50 hectare site at Woollamia was chosen for a reimaging of the outdoor education idea. Construction was begun in 2015 and in October 2016, some thirty Year 9 lads formed the inaugural cohort. At the Field Studies Centre boys will be nurtured and educated in a setting of beautifully crafted facilities which will soften any longings for the comforts of home they may be tempted to have before they are captivated by the wide range of exciting and interesting educational activities after they enter through the main doorway, The Portal, to whatever adventures and experiences lie behind it for those many students who will pass through it in the decades to come. As for the actual events of the weekend of the Opening of The Centre, a group of Trinity personnel accompanied the Head Master to the area on Friday, November 18, where they were met with a most gracious reception and Welcome to Country ceremony by the Elders of the local Indigenous community, on whose ancestral lands the Centre has been built. On the Saturday, four hundred or so folk attended the Official Opening of the Field Studies Centre. Not only were Trinity folk present, but many local people also, which promises a good relationship between the School and the surrounding district. Indeed, the School Band was able to give a short performance on the Saturday morning at Huskisson which was most favourably received and which augurs well for future occasions. Later, the Band entertained the visitors while men from the Old Trinitarians Union, famously expert at this particular culinary skill, provided tasty sausage and caramelised onion rolls and refreshing salads and drinks, as the visitors inspected the buildings on site, or went on guided tours around the immediate areas of bushland and water features. Perhaps the most stunning event though, was the dance performed by the Indigenous group who gave a most interesting insight into their culture and its attitudes to the flora and fauna of the area. This performance culminated in a mass circular dance as folk were invited to join in, the dance symbolising a getting to know each other. The Official Opening was simply done, yet was not without great significance. Held outside The Portal, with a ribbon stretched across it, the Head Master s welcome was followed by the National Anthem sung to the Band s accompaniment. Mr Richard Pegg, Chairman of the School Council spoke and the School Captain gave a reading from I Kings 4: The Bishop of South Sydney, The Right Reverend Dr Michael Stead offered prayers before pronouncing the Dedication, after which the ribbon was cut. The Portal opened, and the company was invited to take the tour through the facility, the workmanship and quality of which is of the highest order, and is a glowing tribute to all who have brought into being a splendid source of education for many generations of Trinitarians. May the gracious welcome which the people of the Wreck Bay Aboriginal Community have given us to the area never be forgotten, but that a true spirit of fellowship remain an inspiration to us all as we share in our country. 14 ACADEMIC Academic Focus Christian Studies In Christian Studies, the Lord Jesus Christ is presented to the students as we read and study biblical texts. As an exercise in the pursuit of knowledge this is of infinite value. In a world of abundant access to information and competing world views, the Bible gives us coherent knowledge of God, ourselves and our world. This justifies the pursuit of truth, meaning and purpose and constitutes the foundation of an academic Christian education. First, we gain knowledge of God. The opening of John s Gospel declares, In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God (Jn 1:1). Identifying Jesus as divine and the Word implies that there is indeed an ultimate reality that can be known and communicated. When boys study the promises of God in the Old Testament, their fulfilment in the Gospel narratives and the New Testament letters, they are coming to a knowledge of God as a relational God, a loving and compassionate Father. Knowledge and consequent experience of the person of Jesus enables the boys to come to an understanding of themselves. John s Gospel goes on to declare that the Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us (Jn. 1:14). This person is, at one and the same time, God and human. This is the strongest affirmation of the value and significance of all human personhood. It emphasises the purpose of God that humans are meant to live for eternity, which is expressed in the historic resurrection of Jesus from the dead. The Bible has played a prominent role within Western culture by affirming the value and significance of each and every human person. Human beings are made to know God and to know each other. The boys have the opportunity to discover their own value and significance and the importance of relationships through interactive study of the biblical texts. The person of Jesus enables the boys to understand all creation. In reference to Jesus as the Word, John s Gospel alludes to the Genesis account by affirming Through him all things were made. (Jn. 1:3). There is a lot that could be said about how this forms the foundation of an academic pursuit of knowledge in various subject fields. The uniformity and order of creation, as a result of its creation by the Word, enables us to use words to study the world in a coherent and reasonable way. Since Jesus made the world, we have a basis for knowing what to do with knowledge gained in various subject areas. As the students study various worldviews, the Sermon on the Mount, and ethics in Christian Studies in Years 10-12, they come to explore application of knowledge gained in various subject areas. As students develop an intellectual framework where truth is valued and right relationships are also important they develop the understanding required to apply their knowledge gained in the classroom, fulfilling the School s mission to have the boys grow in wisdom and stature and in favour with God and man. 17 End Of Term Holiday Borrowing From the Arthur Holt Library The author Stephen King called books a uniquely portable magic. We tend to agree, and at no time does this sentiment make more sense that right before the holidays. A book can be enjoyed almost anywhere. Reading a book keeps your brain occupied after a day of activity, or it could be the only thing you do all day. A book can be stashed quickly in a backpack and accompany you all the way, or swapped with another whilst on the road. If you want to get really meta, you could read a book about travelling while you are travelling our Journeys Reading List has lots of suggestions ranging from classics to fantastic quests, from historical wanderings to real life adventures. Whatever you like to read when you don t have to, we encourage you to visit the Library in the coming week and borrow some books for the holidays. If you are on Instagram, remember to post a picture of your book on holiday and tag it #tgsbooksonholiday We hope to see you in the Library soon! End Of Term Returns It s that time of the term again time to hunt out those overdue library books and return them to their rightful home. Doing so before the end of term will mean you won t be fined that s got to be good. A reminder also, that you can return books for which you ve already been fined AND the Library will refund you! 18 Black Holes and Axolotls I Bought A Zoo This term, Year 8 are learning a topic called I bought a Zoo, which covers topics such as animal adaptations, classification of living organisms, plant and animal cells and the use of microscopes. We have conducted many experiments in this unit, including fish dissection. Some students were disturbed by the sight of the fish entails, while others were curious to examine what was in their bodies. Surprisingly we discovered parts of the fish we had no idea about such as the swim bladder, which controls the buoyancy, letting them stay at the current depth of water without wasting energy for swimming. 08SC2A are very lucky to have a new species in the classroom which is an axolotl, which is Mexican salamander or a Mexican walking fish. It has big branch-like gills, lizard-like limbs, and a cute perma-smile. We have decided to name it Eso Axel Rocky (or EAR for short). It is a newborn Axolotl and it is living in a pretty spacious tank with the best care by 08SC2A. Ali Issmail (8Ta) Year 9 Visit From Dr. Richard McDermid On the 16th of November 2016, Dr. Richard McDermid visited Trinity to share his knowledge about measuring black holes by using lasers as well as how they are formed and what they do to impact the other planets and stars around them. His talk was very intriguing and stimulated many questions from all of the boys and staff in the library. It was a very enjoyable experience and was worth checking out. 20 The Debating Society The Debating Society began the season with a number of internal debates which commenced on the 28th of October in order to prepare for the grueling FED, ISDA and CAS rounds to follow next year. These internal rounds provided a platform for those new members of the Society to familiarize themselves with the skills required to become a proficient debater, whilst also challenging some of the more experienced debaters to continue to hone their abilities. This was achieved through feedback and training from a number of highly capable coaches, who must be acknowledged for their continuous commitment to the debating society throughout the course of this term. Furthermore, these internal rounds have also heavily assisted in team selections for the upcoming competitive rounds next year, allowing for a number of different combinations to have been tested, providing a comprehensive outlook for next year s debates. Hence they have also provided space for a number of enjoyable social rounds of debating amongst peers, an opportunity I m sure all debaters have thoroughly enjoyed. Moreover, on the 12th of November, Trinity hosted a friendly round of debating against a tough MLC opponent. The Middle School boys set a positive tone early in the night, winning three out of a possible six debates, with the 7B, 8B and 8A teams emerging successful. These boys must be commended on their efforts through the night, displaying as they did an extremely high standard of debating. These students will be the future leaders of the Debating Society in the years to follow and it was excellent to see such prowess from these young debaters. Unfortunately, the senior debaters were unable to achieve similar success, winning only one of five debates. Thus the 10Bs must be acknowledged for their win, although there were a number of other close debates, in particular the 3rd III and the 1st III. Despite the results, this friendly round of debating proved to be an enjoyable round for all debaters, exposing some aspects of our debating which must be improved for the competitive rounds ahead. However, MLC must be congratulated on their strong performance throughout the night. The Trinity 10As team also held a friendly debate against Marist Brothers College, on the 19th of November. The team, consisting of Aidan Tharmarajah (10WH), Samuel Gorman (10Hi) and Nicholas Bouletos (10Mu) engaged strongly with a highly capable Marist Brothers team and credit must go to both teams for the extremely high standard of debating. Aidan set the bar high with an extremely engaging speech perfectly characterizing the issues within the debate, whilst Samuel, with an incredible amount of general knowledge, provided the backbone of Trinity s case. Nicholas as the third speaker perfectly summarised Trinity s case, exposing the flaws within the opposition, hence overall displaying a high standard of debating. As a result, Trinity were able to secure a win against Marist Brothers in what proved to be a very intense debate. This will be the final season for debating the Year 12 members in representing Trinity Grammar, many of whom have been a part of the Society for six years. As such, I would like to personally commend each Year 12 debater on the ongoing commitment and positive influence he has had upon the Debating Society, in particular on the younger members who have had such great role models to look up to. 21 SPORT CAS Round 5 Versus Cranbrook Basketball vs Cranbrook 1st V Firsts Hang On To Win Ugly And Remain Undefeated After Five Games. An under-manned Trinity finished the first half of the season with a tough four points victory (54-50) to remain two games clear at the top of the CAS ladder with other contenders Barker, Knox and Waverley all on three wins and two losses. On a balmy Friday night in the Cranbrook gym, Trinity gained the early lead with Davo Hickey (12Ke) exploding for 11 points in the opening quarter, which included a thunderous dunk. A huge 3 from Richard Ziade (10Mu) at the end of the second quarter sent Trinity to the break in control with a ten-point lead (28-18). Jed Keogh (12Ar) did a great job nullifying the Cranbrook s leading scorer in the second half, while Luke Nichol (9He) grabbed his opportunity with a couple of crucial baskets, giving Trinity an 11-point buffer heading into the final period. Offensively, Trinity continued to struggle in the fourth quarter, with the Greens becoming tentative when opportunities presented in the paint. Cranbrook made a late charge with some big shots from beyond the arc, but steading baskets from Tom Mackenzie (12WJ), Jake Kerry (12Ho) and Davo Hickey allowed Trinity to hang on and win ugly, which is a sign of a good team. 23 Luke Nichol (9He) finds a path to the basket on a Friday night at Cranbrook. 2nd V Seconds Make It Three Wins In A Row. Coming off a big win against Knox, Trinity was looking to end the year on a positive note. The Seconds knew that travelling to Cranbrook on a Friday night would be tough, but they were mentally prepared and stepped up to the challenge that awaited them. Again a strong start from the Greens resulted in an early lead in a very physical matchup. David Carreon (11St) played a significant role in the first few minutes of the game with his scoring inside and out, as well as finding open teammates for easy baskets. Harry Dunn (12Mu) provided a spark off the bench, providing the team with many great defensive plays. Ben LoRusso (12He) and Nick Driessen (12Yo) were tough in the paint pulling down numerous rebounds, both on the offensive and defensive end. The nine point victory gives Trinity a 3-2 record at the end of the first round. Leading Scorers Copyright Trinity Grammar School All Rights Reserved. 23 of 54

24 David Carreon 14 pts. Ollie Davis 10 pts. Ben LoRusso (12He) busts through in the Seconds important win over Cranbrook 4th V The Fourths put in a stellar second half to pull away and win by 14 points. With the other bigs not in attendance, Marcus Buvac (11WJ) played his heart out and supplied a key role in the middle with his rebounding and strong moves offensively. Andrew Jin (11WJ) nailed some big shots from downtown to give the Greens the momentum need to extend their winning streak to four games. Special mention must also go to Harrison Barden (11Yo) and Matthew Lang (12La), who consistently attached the Cranbrook basket when opportunities presented. 5th V Trinity showed incredible grit to pull out a tough seven-point win. Playing on the road, with multiple players away, meant the Fifths had to really stick together as group. Jerry Ren (11Ke) and Angus Davies (12Ho) were huge on the boards, setting the tone on the inside with multiple rebounds and baskets around the rim. Jacob Taylor-Tighe (11Ta) was outstanding also, with his all-court hustle. Copyright Trinity Grammar School All Rights Reserved. 24 of 54

25 7th V Trinity started well and produced a commanding lead in the first half. Thomas Newall (11Yo) scored at will with strong moves inside the paint, while Zac Lorusso (11He) was relentless with his rebounding. Momentum shifted in the second half with a spirited Cranbrook playing strong defence and converting on the offensive, but to Trinity s, credit they held on to escaped with a solid victory. Year 9A The Greens rounded out the first round with another close victory. After a slower than expected start, Trinity rallied behind solid interior play by Joel Passerini (Hi). This then set the tone for Bailey Plummer (Du) to go to work, creating for himself and team mates throughout the game. This now has the 9As sitting at a very credible 4-1, considering that they lost four players to the Firsts. Year 9C Trinity were impressive both on full court pressing and gaining clean open shots in their comprehensive win. The Greens defence was led gallantly by two players who recently were promoted from the Ds, Turoa Williams (WH) and Adrian Lagana (Ar). They were complemented by the industrious Zac Balzan (Ta), who led with intense pressure from the front. Zac also benefitted from many steals, finishing them to add to the team s impressive overall score. Seamus O Connor (Ho), Isaac Soldatos (Hi) and Miles Amatosero (Hi) contributed with numerous baskets from inside and out. Year 9E The 9Es had a close encounter, winning by just a single basket. The game was very physical and tightlycontested and both teams should be praised for the fair play and sportsmanship they showed. The leading point scorer this week was Jacob Alha (Ho), with 16 points including a long range 3 which brought Trinity back in to contention. Jacob, however, would not have been able to achieve this without the unselfish defensive work of Anton Markovic (Sc) and Leon Mulcahy (Hi). This week the team finally began to work as a unit and they are to be commended for this effort. Year 8A The mighty 8As were tested by a very determined Cranbrook team. In a low-scoring first half, Bertie Alcock (WJ) was solid defensively, while Theo Kidd (WJ) used his length to make it hard for the opposition to progress the ball. In the second half Trinity began to find their rhythm with Thomas Buvac (WJ) and Tyrese Proctor (Fo) taking control. Hayden Johnson (WH) and Jamie Christopoulos (Ar) began to find holes in the Cranbrook defence as the Greens surged away in what was a much- needed test for this young group, who now understand they have plenty to work for the rest of the season and beyond. Year 8B Trinity showed plenty of fight to hang on and win by just four points. Jacob Stark (Fo) and Kai Roberts (La) battled hard around the basket, while James Petrakis (Hi) and Nat Pearson (Sc) worked hard at the defensive end. Tate Cole (Sc) orchestrated the offence well, making some key plays late in the game. If the 8Bs can learn to finish good scoring opportunities that they often get themselves into, they will be a tough team to beat in the future. Year 8E Adam Pascale (8Ke) and Adam Stavros (8Ho) were dominant on both ends of the court in Trinity s low scoring 8-point win. A solid combination was forged between Ali Issmail (8Ta) and Daniel Soldatos (8Hi), which created many offensive options for Trinity. Year 8F Copyright Trinity Grammar School All Rights Reserved. 25 of 54

26 A strong lead was established early for Trinity with great transitional play by Lachlan Dock (Ta) and Lucas Pezzano (Fo). Daniel Bellero (He) played great team basketball, often passing ahead for fast break opportunities. A great win for the boys and an even better way to end off the final match of the year. Year 8G With a convincing 28-point win, the whole team is to be commended on great communication with great encouraging and passing skills. Special mention to Zach Gindy (Ke) scoring 12 points and Jack Gonzi (Ta) for creating lots of opportunities for the team. Year 8H Off to a rocky start, the 8Hs needed a quick confidence boost, which was provided by Jonathan Matta s (La) quick and precise ball movement up the court that created opportunities for scoring machine Hamish Agnew (Ta) to capitalize upon, which inspired the Greens to finish strongly. Year 8I The Greens started strongly and maintained dominance throughout the game. Newcomer Haidar Saab (Mu), tallied 12 points against his name with strong movement in and out of the key for easy layups. Brilliant defensive work from Nixon Milner (We), grabbing lots of rebounds and Maxwell Richards (Mu) stopping numerous fast breaks helped keep Shore to a low score. 28 Cricket Round 4 2 Day Games vs Knox Round 5 1 Day Games vs Cranbrook CAS 2 Day Cricket Vs Knox 1st XI Trinity s 1st XI Friday/Saturday fixture against Knox saw Trinity put in a complete performance to win away from home and be placed out right top of the CAS table. After losing the toss and bowling on Friday afternoon Trinity were already on the back foot having to endure the scorching conditions. However, these harsh conditions didn t seem to effect the effort and precision of the Trinity bowling attack as they fought hard restricting Knox to an under par total of 9-190, before claiming the last wicket on the first ball the next day. Leading the pace attack was Angus Clarke (11WH) who claimed 4 crucial wickets during Day 1. Trinity s opening pair set up a vital base for the lower order at 0-41, before an unwanted collapse saw Trinity on the back foot after 3 quick wickets. Nevertheless, Liam Scott (11We) and Ritvik Dinesh (10Ke) were able to combine for a 116 run partnership, with Liam being dismissed for 88. The patience, shot selection and appropriate aggression demonstrated by these two boys was excellent. They were under the pump from Knox, but with determination they worked together and shone. Ritvik with the help of the lower order were proficient in getting Trinity across the line, with Ritvik showing bundles of mental toughness to get Trinity the win and was unluckily dismissed for 51. Trinity will now face Cranbrook away from home and hopefully finish on a high to remain top of the table going into the oneday games next year. Mark Dedes (12St) 2nd XI Blistering heat greeted the Trinity and Knox 2nd sides on Friday 18 November as they prepared to kick-start their penultimate 2-day fixture of the season. Both teams would ve been hoping to win the toss and elect to bat, thereby escaping the wrath of the afternoon sun. Trinity won the toss and did just that. The pre-match strategising centred around batting solidly through the day, leaving wickets in-hand for a lasthour-of-the-day assault. Unfortunately, however, the Trinity batsmen looked unsure of themselves upfront and gave their wickets away cheaply. This meant that the remainder of the day s play was a delicate balancing act of scoring runs without losing wickets. The net result, slow scoring and the inevitability of batting further on day 2. At the close of play on day 1, Trinity were and Knox would ve felt the happier of the two teams. Come day 2, the weather had cooled significantly and the Trinity team were looking forward to bowling in the overcast conditions. However, before that could materialise, the team needed something to bowl to and the aim was to add as many runs as possible to the overnight tally within a minute period. As it happened, Trinity managed to add 32 runs and were all out for 182. Wicket-Keeper Jonathan Hooper (11Ar) was the mainstay of the Trinity innings scoring 56, while Lachlan Fitch (12Hi) contributed with a valuable 23 not out. The team knew that they d have to take wickets regularly and field tightly if they were going to stop the visitors from scoring the runs required. The Trinity bowlers started well and the Knox batsmen struggled to score freely. A couple of chances went begging but runs were being restricted. Would missed chances come back to bite the home team? As the innings progressed, Knox began to take more calculated risks, the benefit of having wickets in hand. This put the Trinity fielders under immense pressure and miss-fields, over-throws and missed chances started to plague the home side. In the end, Knox got over the line in the last over of the day for a well-deserved win. Very few of the bowlers found the going easy, but Lachlan Fitch, Samuel Otton (12Ta) and Lachlan Hayward (12Fo) were the most effective on the day and tried hard to break partnerships. Trinity will be ruing the missed chances, poor fielding and slow scoring that characterised their performance over the weekend. Having said that, the team are keen to bounce back and improve significantly going into the final week of the 2- day season. Mr Neil Smallfield 10A Day two started with Trinity chasing 279 and in need of a solid victory against Knox to climb the ladder. The opening pair of Jordan Gupta (10WJ) (60) and George Panopolous (10Du) (40) put on a fantastic opening partnership to have Trinity on top. Unfortunately, the day did not go to script. After being 0/114 Trinity quickly fell to 8/182.With some poor running between wickets and some lacklustre shots Trinity found themselves on the back foot and in desperate need for some smart batting and a focus on time at the crease. Although there were glimpses of hope coming from the tail it was not enough and Trinity ended all out for 218. There is great promise in this side and with the one day round soon to start, the team needs to take a fresh approach and attack the Copyright Trinity Grammar School All Rights Reserved. 28 of 54

29 second half of the season with a real desire to compete for every ball. Mr Will Campbell 9A Knox won the toss on a very hot Friday afternoon and had no hesitation in batting. The Trinity bowlers were able to extract some movement off the seam and it wasn t long before Knox were 3 for 21. There were a couple of significant partnerships in the middle of the Knox innings, but wickets fell regularly and Knox were eventually bowled out for 178. Best with the ball Joshua Yeoh (9Sc) 3/25 & Patrick Fouracre (9WH) 3/ 4. Trinity had to survive and awkward 20 mins before stumps and finished the days play at 1/11. Saturday morning saw the wicket a lot harder and flatter to bat on, sometimes losing the toss can be a good thing. Trinity took advantage of the improved conditions and put together two very strong partnerships of 57 and 139 to finish the day on 3/224. A convincing first innings win. Strong performances with the bat came from Harry Goldsmith (9La) 100no, Patrick Fouracre 57no and Angus Mooney (9La) 40. Mr Andrew Payne CAS 1 Day Cricket 3rd XI The 3rd XI recorded a fine victory over Cranbrook on TGS 1. Batting first, Trinity compiled a total of 112 and were confident in defending this score. The bowlers did a magnificent job and we well-supported in the field and Cranbrook were dismissed for only 57 runs. 9B Trinity won the toss and chose to bat and posted a very healthy total of 220 against St Joseph s College. Anton Demark (9Sc) and Steven Kountouris (9Mu) began solidly with some good stroke play and running between the wickets scoring 43 and 40 respectively. Ritvik Sharma (9Mu) then came in and played some powerful strokes and took the game away from the opposition and was retired on 68. In response, St Joseph s scored 93 with Akash Tiwari (9Ke) being the pick of the bowlers finishing with 3/24 off 4 while Amish Patel (9Hi) contributed with 2/10 off 3 overs. Mr Ben Cook 8A Trinity bowled first on TGS 3 against Cranbrook. They had the visiting side in early trouble due to some tight opening bowling from Darcy Mooney (8La). The Trinity side continued to turn the screws on their opposition and Nikhik Kapoor (8Yo) was the beneficiary of the build-up of pressure by claiming His off-spinners were well flighted and he deceived the Cranbrook batsmen on numerous occasions. Eventually Cranbrook were dismissed for 116. The run chase began brightly for Trinity and apart from a run-out fairly early, the boys were able to chase down the total without any fuss. Emmanuel Grogan (8Fo) scored 57 not out and Rory Scott finished on 36 not out when the total was reached in the 16th over. 8B Coming into the last CAS round before the season break, the Trinity 8Bs were keen to finish on a positive note. Following strong batting contributions from Theo Christian (8He) and Sam Wade (8Ke) scoring 40 and 39 respectively, Trinity were in a strong position to take control of the game. Through a combination of smart bowling and energetic fielding the side effectively restricted Cranbrook, leading to an exciting victory by 8 runs. 30 After winning both their pool matches in convincing style, Trinity earnt the right to host the T20 final against Barker on TGS 1. After losing the toss and bowling, Trinity s opening bowlers did a great job in restricting Barker during the first 6 over power play period where Barker could only manage The side continued to tighten the screws with Liam Scott (11We), Matthew Turner (11Ho) and Kenneth Chu (10Mu) bowling well to claim 2 wickets each. After 20 overs, Barker sat on Trinity s run chase got off to a flyer with Tane Edmed (11Fo) and Austin Waugh (12St) flaying the bowling to all parts. After 4 overs Trinity sat on Despite 2 quick wickets, captain Mark Dedes (12St) (18 not out) and Edmed (45 not out) continued the run chase with little fuss and passed Barker s total with 8 wickets in hand. A well-deserved victory for a side that showed their dominance in all 3 of their T20 matches. This is the first T20 competition that the boys have won and they should be proud of their efforts. This Friday and Saturday sees the culmination of the first half of the Cricket season as our 2 day teams take on Cranbrook. 33 Tennis vs Cranbrook The last fixture of the year was played last Saturday against Cranbrook in fine but windy conditions. This fixture also marked the half way point in the season with five more matches to be played next term. Overall it was a very successful day s play, with the Trinity teams winning 72% of the 18 matches contested. Currently we have 6 undefeated teams which include the 1st IV, 4th IV, 6th IV and the 10A, B, C teams. The 1st IV kept their winning record intact with a convincing 7 sets to 1 victory over their eastern suburbs counterparts on the hard courts at Dangar. The team, who have struggled to be at full strength this season, once again had to call upon Brendan Sleiman (12Ta) to step up this time to replace the injured Mathew Nedanovski (10Fo). Brendan as usual relished this opportunity and was instrumental in helping the team to victory with decisive play in the doubles component of the match. His leadership qualities came to the fore particularly in the tight second set doubles as he combined with younger team mate James McCabe (9St) to take the set after the scores were locked at 4 apiece. On the adjacent court the Kmet brothers once again proved a formidable combination and were simply too strong, running out easy winners 6-1, 6-2. Dario (10Ke) provided his usual fire power and flair whilst older brother Luca (12Ke) played a steady, solid game. In the end, this combination was too much for the rather shell-shocked Cranbrook opponents, who capitulated easily. The majority of singles encounters went Trinity s way in quick succession, including James McCabe s match which was a one-sided affair. James, who was playing in the number 2 position, was superior in every aspect of the match and should be commended for his excellent match play and sportsmanship during the 6-2 win. The team now moves 3 points clear of nearest rivals Knox College and sits on top of the competition. Jeremy Dykgraaff MIC Tennis 10A And B Report The last round of the year for the year 10A tennis team couldn't have ended any better as we smashed Cranbrook six sets to love. After a tough start, Justin Sleiman (10Ta) and Jonathon Karagiannis (10Hi) won their doubles 7-5 in a close set. The doubles played by Nicholas Field (10WH) and Lachlan Sleiman (10Ta) was a little more comfortable and they never looked like losing and taking it out 6-3. Due to some boys being absent, everyone had to step up and perform in a higher position. Nicholas Field and Lachlan smashed their singles 6-2, Jonathon Karagiannis played amazing and won 6-1. A big well-done to Justin Sleiman playing in the A1 position and demoralizing his opponent 6-0! The year 10B tennis team also finished on a good note for the year, flying through their sets to win 5-1 and 36 games to 18. All the boys should be very proud of their efforts. It was a tough doubles game for Gregory Aravanis (10We) and Quentin Dai (10Du) winning 7-5; on the other end John Sarris (10Ta) and Henry Meyer (10Sc) taking out their doubles 6-2. In the singles, great matches were played by all the boys, John Sarris and Greg Aravanis both winning 6-2, unfortunately Quentin Dai, though playing some great tennis, went down 5-7 and a big well done to Henry Meyer smashing his opponent 6-0. Danielle Calvi Coach Year 9 A And B Report Cranbrook s team proved too talented for the Trinity 9A team, who found it impossible to crack their stronghold on the match. Congratulations must go to Aryan Rawal (9Mu) who was the only player to win a set on the day. He played well and fought hard to win his singles 6-4. Tom Jin (9Yo) played an excellent Singles match at A1 but went down narrowly 4-6. Selwyn Chang (9Ar) met very stiff opposition but is to be congratulated on his enthusiasm. In the 9B team, congratulations go to Daniel Mircevski (9St) and his doubles partner Steve Poulos (9Ta) who rallied throughout the match to contest the tie breaker, showing great tenacity and determination. Christian Nguyen (9Ho) and William Beretov-Millar (9Ho) both played pleasing singles matches and gave their Cranbrook opponents a tough tussle. 34 fixture last week, all teams had worked extremely hard at training, none more so than the 8As. Despite a hard week of training, the As struggled to get things going in the doubles, losing both sets tightly. Unfortunately the team couldn t turn it around in the singles, losing all sets in a competitive fashion nonetheless. The Bs had a different outcome to the As, winning 5 sets to 1. Things started breezily with two doubles wins. Things became a little tenser on losing the first singles set, but a few composed performances saw the victory that they needed. The Cs and Ds had a few changes to the line-up this week, though it did prove beneficial to both teams. Despite these changes in position, the boys trained well in their new teams and with their new partners. This particularly showed in the Cs, winning both sets convincingly. Despite a few losses in the singles, the boys did enough to get up with a 4 sets to 2 victory. The Ds didn t quite have the start that the Cs had, winning 1 of 2 sets. Despite being level after the doubles, some strong performances from the top of the D s ensured a 3-1 lead heading into the last two matches. Although one of these sets was dropped, winning 1 out of 2 was more than enough to give the team a 4 sets to 2 victory. 36 Volleyball vs Cranbrook Trinity Defeated Knox 2-0 Yet again, a well-fought victory for the Trinity Seconds volleyball against Knox. Knox was incapable of defending against the consistently accurate and powerful serving and spiking from Nathaniel Davies (11Ke), who managed to win a total of ten points in a row off his serve and bring us to victory with his game-winning spike. Carrying us on the defensive portion of the game was Piers Connolly (11Ar) who was willing to put his body on the line for the team, throwing himself around to make clutch saves. Another honourable mention should go to the power couple of Ben Holzwart (12WJ) and Ben Davies (12WJ), with Davies precision sets and Holzwart s stupendous spikes proving difficult to the Knox side to return the ball. This game once again proves a strong sense of a tight-knit team that when put to the test will push through to victory. 37 Summer Track and Field AA Permit Jumps Meet Trinity Grammar School Wednesday 23rd November 2016 On Wednesday night, Trinity Track and Field hosted its first athletics meeting that was fully sanctioned by Athletics Australia. The event allowed athletes to qualify for both National and International competitions and break State and National records. It was a boutique Jumps Meet involving a small group of athletes in the Long Jump, Triple Jump and High Jump. We had the top two male Triple jumpers in the State go head to head which provided the crowd with some elite level jumping. Ben Cox (Trinity Athletics Club) and Emmanuel Fakiye both jumped over the 15 metre mark providing an entertaining competition. Also in the Triple Jump, Connor Murphy (10Ta) continued his good form leading into Nationals jumping 13.23m (just 4 cm shy of his PB) and Finn Murphy (9Ta), used the crowd support to his advantage jumping a new personal best performance of 11.33m. In the Long Jump promising junior athlete Alex Willett jumped a personal best performance of 6.88m to take out the competition and in the High Jump the winner narrowly missed 2.00m on his final attempt and it was also good to see Angus Clark (11WH) in his first competition back since State, jumping 1.80m, a good confidence booster prior to Nationals and Ethan Bateman (9WJ) 1.70m. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Athletics NSW officials (including our own Mr Paul Stenhouse) and all the athletes and parents involved in making the event successful, special thanks also to Old boy Marcus Trevena (15/12We) for being the MC for the competition. 13 Years High Jump Finn Murphy (9Ta) 1.50m Triple Jump Finn Murphy (9Ta) 11.33m (PB) Copyright Trinity Grammar School All Rights Reserved. 37 of 54

41 NCAA Cross Country Championships 19th November 2016 Australia has always had a strong tradition of Athletes heading over to the U.S.A to complete University while pursuing their Sporting Careers. Trinity Grammar School was proudly represented at the recent NCAA DI Men s Cross Country Championship in Terre Haute, Indiana, by two Old Boys and former Cross Country Captains. Cameron Griffith (14/12Yo) and Oliver Hoare (15/12St) both completed their maiden NCAA Championships for their College. Cameron, who considers himself more of a Track Athlete and in his second Year at Arkansas finished in a solid 48th place. This helped the University of Arkansas to a 5th place finish. He completed the 10km course in 30 min and 32 sec, which was only 1 min behind the winner and fellow Australian and Rio Olympic Games representative Patrick Teirnan (Villanova). By all accounts Griffith had a blistering last 2km, improving 50 positions. Cameron s Team mate Jack Bruce ( 13) who finished in 19th is also an Anglican Church Grammar School, Brisbane, Old Boy. We hope that Cameron follows in the footsteps of fellow University of Arkansas alum Michael Power who represented Australia at the 2000 Olympic Games in the 5000m. Oliver, who has been representing the University of Wisconsin for only 2 months, finished the NCAA Championships in 227th place. To the untrained eye this looks like a poor performance. However, Oliver completed the 10km course in 32min 6sec which is a fantastic achievement as he was only 2 mins 30 sec behind the winner, and only 90 sec behind Cameron. This means that for every second in between Cameron and Oliver, almost 3 people were crossing the line. This shows the enormous depth of competition in the U.S. College system where in less than 5mins, 250 men crossed the finish line. Wisconsin finished the Championships 8th Overall with Newington College Old Boy Morgan McDonald ( 14) placing 7th. On the Women s side of the competition the University of Oregon won the Championship with Jess Hull ( 15), formerly of The Illawarra Grammar School, placing 79th overall. We wish Cameron and Oliver all the best for the future and their upcoming indoor Track & Field Season. The opposition jumped away to an early lead 3:1 after the first quarter. After some adjustments, our defence, led by a stout effort from James Artemi (12Hi) enabled us to gain some composure. The team fought hard in the second quarter, but were unsuccessful despite the opportunities that they generated and fell further behind on the score board, 6:3. They continued to play strongly as a team and managed to match Scots in the second half with a few outstanding goals by Sam Yip (11La), to finally go down Congratulations to our goal scorers: Sam Yip, John Dunn (12La), James Artemi, Jacob Gadiel (11Mu) and Tomas Linfield-Kent (11Du). 2nd VII Scots College were simply far too good. We were shown to be wanting right from the start and we didn't score until the last quarter. Our best players were goal scorers Tyeson Street (11WJ) and Charlie Griffith (11Yo), who both used their heads and controlling, and at times dominating, their opponents. Our other goal scorer was Matthew Moon (12We). 16As There were few defensive mistakes from either team but Scots led 2:1 after the first quarter. In the second quarter the boys corrected their game plan and managed to organise the zone defence and with two fast counter attacks, the team managed to take the lead after the second quarter. The second half of the game was tougher, but the boys fought with all their strength and managed to secure a nice win, 7:5. Congratulations to the leading scorer of the game, Ryan Hansen (10We). 15s A great win, considering we were missing 7 players -- our five best swimmers, our Goalie, and our other experienced player! The whole team contributed to our win with great press defence for the entire game, allowing Scots very few scoring opportunities. Lewis Dobbin (9Du) was outstanding in defence and led most of our attack, scoring 7 goals while Elliott Lacey (9Hi) chimed in with 5. A special mention goes to Hugo Warne (9Ta), who had his best game of the season, never letting the opposition get any chances and making a couple of fine steals. A big thank you also to Gus Chatat (9La), who normally plays in the 16Bs team, for filling in as goal keeper and doing a great Job-- we ll need him next week! 14As Although fielding a greatly under strength side, we put in a valiant effort against a very strong opposition. Our usual defence teamwork was missing, but improvement in individual skills was displayed. Thanks go to the efforts of our replacement players. 43 14Bs The 14Bs secured their first victory for the season! In many regards a textbook win and given the performance of the entire team, one where we couldn t identify a man of the match. Joshua Muir (8He), Benjamin Kick (8WJ) and Will Lenard (8St) all backed up from playing with the 14As with Will scoring a goal. Joshua Butler (8St) and Sebastian Papadopoulos (8He) were instrumental in defence with team mate Thomas 'Terminator' Seeto (8Ta) playing an offensive-defensive game to support rookie keeper Sam Nichols (8Ho) in keeping the opposition out. Jon-Luc Shalala (8Sc), Ethan Webb (8Ke) and Michael Wierum (8He) provided strong support from the middle of the pool; while Ricardo Delgado (8St) opened up the field and made a number of strong passes to the team s top scorers Juno Ananda (8Ar), Patrick Cantlon (8Du) and Henry Andersen (Ta). 46 Cub and Scout News OPERATION GoGet Gelato! OPERATION GoGet Gelato! With the hot weather upon us, the Trinity Scout Group undertook the important mission this week of getting gelato! After a very quick opening parade with a safety briefing we confirmed emergency contact details and then cubs with leaders, scouts in patrols of four and the venturers independently set off to the Tramsheds near Jubilee Park and the new Gelato Messina shop. Catching the tram was the preferred transport thought different groups made independent choices on where to catch the tram from which included Lewisham West, Waratah Mills and Arlington. A safety rule was set limiting scouts to cross Old Canterbury Road at traffic lights if their route to the light rail required. The gelato was a great treat with many varied flavour combinations. After gelato we played some games in the park as parents arrived on their way home from work with some staying on for dinner at the Tramsheds. The scouts are pleased to support the fiesta with a stand. Pease call by.
