HAILEYBURY Newsletter - Issue 6 May 15, 2015 Contents Middle School Football Report Mr Paul Dooley Karl Amon Gets Call Up Match Reports from each team from Round 2. OHFC Report This weeks games. FOOTBALL ROUND 2 After a great start to the season in Round 1 by all teams, Round 2 was a bit of a wake up call as to where some of us are at. More losses than wins but reading through some of the match reports our boys certainly learnt a lot and it may be some different looking teams that run out this weekend. Also off to a promising few opening games were the OHFC a 10 goal to 1 first quarter saw them suffer a big loss against Marcelin. Our firsts had a bye and look forward to the challenge of taking on the undefeated St Kevins at home on Saturday. If you are not doing anything and want to support The Bloods get to the Rendall at 1.00pm, we would love to hear and see you at the game. Our mighty Thirds have had two great wins to kick off the season and are enjoying their footy. The 9A s are also undefeated after two close wins. They are playing great football and will be challenged again this weekend when they take on St Kevins at St Kevins at midday on Saturday. Go Bloods! This weekend there have been a number of late game moves due to conditions of ovals. A reminder to check fixtures on GO2, your coach will also so remember to check. Especially when the weather has been like this week. KARL GETS THE CALL UP - THIS TIME IT'S FOR REAL! Having been selected on the bench of 7 for the past two weeks, it's 3rd time lucky for Karl Amon. Haileybury's 2013 Best and Fairest winner is set to make his debut for Port Adelaide on Sunday against Brisbane. Karl fits the Port Adelaide mould perfectly - quick, skill, smart and a great tackler. We wish him all the best.

MIDDLE SCHOOL FOOTBALL The first two weeks of Middle School football have flown by. Round 3 May 16, A FOOTBALL BYE 8A FOOTBALL V BGS HOME 10.00am Berwick Edrington Oval 9A FOOTBALL V St Kevins AWAY 12.00pm Main 10A FOOTBALL V St Kevins HOME 9.00am Rendall From the first training, both Mr. Tobin (coach of 8A) and myself (coach of 7A) were pleased with the endeavour and teamwork we saw on the Tuesday before the practise matches. With the Year 7 students numbering 60 players, the first week of football pitted the boys against themselves. Throughout six tightly contested quarters, we were able to determine our three teams for round one. Mr. Tobin and the Year 8 s played a practise match against Peninsula. The Year 8 s showed the chemistry and teamwork we have come to expect from them and continued on their Year 7 form with an impressive win. The first two rounds of football saw us compete against some of the powerhouses of the APS competition. The 7A s played St. Kevin s and Xavier respectively. We came away with a win and a loss. Whereas the 8A s played the same teams and walked away with two narrow losses. The B s and C s for both Year levels have shown great endeavour and enthusiasm, but have yet to sing the Haileybury Song in victory. A big thank you to the coaches of Middle School Football, Mr. Adam Little, Mr. Matthew Shill, Mr. Gerry O Dwyer & Mr. James Salter. Your work is greatly appreciated by all the players, I know they are learning more every week. 3 7A MATCH REPORT Yr 7A Match Report (Xavier-Burke Hall 9/5/15)-Game 2 Score: Haileybury to Xavier Best Players: Luke Cleary, Castan Racunica, Zac Buckley & Nathan Gough Goals: Castan Racunica (3) & Zac Buckley (1). As the 7A football team gathered in the club rooms for our second game, players were getting themselves ready, tying up laces, adjusting their mouth guards, and getting warmed up. Mr. Dooley's pre game address reminded us that we have to work hard and play as a team. When it was game time, we ran out onto the ground and were feeling pumped for our second game playing for the mighty Bloods. This season we have 10 Old Boys returning on a Saturday Morning and at training during the week to assist our Football teams. This year we welcome back the following: Sean Corregan Lachlan McPherson Matthew Shill Joshua Steen Jarrod Mantell Peter Shakalis Jackson Coleman Lachlan King Alex Woltering Luke Verma The game started slowly, and it was obvious that we were evenly matched in skill and determination. As a result, there weren t many goals scored and the first quarter ended with the score even at 7 points each. During the first quarter huddle the boys gathered in close, trying to pump each other up as much as we could and again remind each other to play as a team. The second quarter was tough, but the Bloods held a slight lead. It was great to see some boys putting their body on the line, especially Liam, Gus and Castan. In the third and final quarters Xavier started to get a bit of a lead. We did not drop our heads and we worked hard to keep the defensive pressure up. There was a few unfortunate 40 meter penalties awarded to the opposition and while that was a bit of a disappointment for all, it taught us a valuable lesson, to be respectful no matter what decision is made. Overall, we tried hard but it didn't reflect on the score board. The boys were disappointed with both the score outcome and the loss of a few players Kye, Jett and Toby. We will use this disappointment to train hard this week. By Austin Whittaker

BOGAN BINGO Saturday 18 th July Berthon Hall Keysborough Campus Remember? What was the result of this kick last Saturday against Xavier 7B MATCH REPORT Year 7B match Report, 09/05/15 Round 2 Haileybury Burke Hall Best Players: George A, Sam K, Patrick Mc, Nathan M, Mitchell B, Matt B & Andrew G. Goals: Mitchell B (1), Andrew G (1), Matt B (1). The siren sounded and the game began, Burke hall came out firing and were having most of the possessions. They were dominating on the scoreboard but there were no signs of the bloods giving up. There were some great performances from the whole team but we went into quarter time with no score on the board. It was a different story in the second quarter as we were starting to get more of the ball and using the ball more wisely. We found ways to limit them on the scoreboard, and then found ways to cash in on it. We finally got our first goal from a set shot by Mitchell B. He struck the ball well and gave us some momentum leading into half time. The premiership quarter (3rd Quarter) was about to begin. The bloods knew we had to lift if we were any chance of winning this game. An encouraging pep talk from Coach Salter forced us to lift but the only problem was Xavier lifted too. They kicked a couple then we got 1 back through a good goal by

Andrew G. The goal came from a great set up by Sammy Knight out on the wing. The last quarter was our best. Everyone one put their head over the ball and went in hard, we got 1 final goal from a lovely set shot from Matt B. He made a great lead and Nick M gave him a great opportunity from a fantastic kick, allowing Matt B to take a spectacular mark. We had great attack on the ball and it just showed by how much fun and kicks everyone had. We ended up coming second best and in the end, the better team one. Everyone had heaps of fun and enjoyed a good game. Thanks Mr Salter for coaching and good effort boys. By George Aivatoglou 7C MATCH REPORT Score: Haileybury to St Kevin s College Best Players: Max Walstab (grade 6), Louis Pascoe (captain), Ilhan, Jeremy Kerekes, Ben Banks (grade 6) Goals: Sam Morris (1) We drove out to Edrington eager to play. The cold air sent goosebumps crawling over my skin typical Saturday morning. We all eventually arrived ready to get our game on. It was a tough match the weather was cold and the ground and the ball were slippery. The siren sounded and the game began. The bloods worked hard to try and get it into the forward line but St Kevin's had a terrific defence. The bloods worked away with handballs, kicks, tackles and marks. St Kevin's were a fantastic opposition. Tackles were by far our best skill with numerous tackles that were awarded a free kick. We put up a good fight and started to come back in the fourth quarter. The midfield worked well as a team and the backman worked hard to stop the attack from St Kevin's but they were all too good. The bloods worked there guts out but St Kevin's were the better side finishing on top with a massive 80 point lead. I think we can really learn a thing or two from the way St Kevin's played. They were a great side and their disposals were great. St Kevin's seemed to outnumber us as they had a fair amount of players at the ball. The bloods put up a great fight and I think we can all give ourselves a pat on the back. We had some great play by Ilhan, Jeremy, max and Ben. A special thanks to the year six kids and the kids from soccer who came out to help us. Thank you Mr Shills for coaching us and giving us a hand. By Louis, Pascoe

8A MATCH REPORT Final Score: Haileybury 5.8, 38 Xavier 8.9, 57 Goal Kickers: Cody Weightman (2), Maxwell Sievers (1), Fynn Williams (1), Harry Traum (1) Best Players: Cody Weightman, Jesse Laity, Ryan Peele, Jai Elcock, Fletcher Smith, Nick Burke Our game against Xavier College started with promise and a good solid effort, Haileybury kicking with the wind, won the first quarter 24 points to 9. Cody Weightman provided great run and carry with some solid pack marks from Fynn Williams. In the second quarter Xavier closed the gap kicking 13 points, the score at half time kept Haileybury narrowly in front, 27 points to 22. It was a solid defensive effort given by us although Xavier were kicking with the wind. We had our opportunities to increase the margin but we didn't convert kicking 3 behinds for the quarter. Liam Scott and Spiridon Poulos were sweeping well in defence with a fairly even contribution from the team. Harry Traum was doing well getting involved and using his voice to direct the team. Also Nick Burke and Cody Weightman both doing well to keep us in the game. In the third quarter, Xavier managed to take the lead, adding 19 points to the total score. Although we had the wind advantage we were only able to score 9, giving the score 41 to 36 Xavier's way at the end of the quarter. Our ruckman, Ryan Peele continued to compete well in the ruck contests and ran well all game. In the last quarter we didn't man up as well as we had been all game. The difference was them kicking 16 and us only kicking 2 points! Although we

didn't win the game we learnt a lot of things that we need to improve for our next game against BGS. Mr Tobin's message was clear at the end of the game, he told us that we are competitive in 8A's and that we're moving in the right direction. Next game against BGS we need to be competitive over 4 quarters and do the simple things well. We look forward to singing the song! By Lachlan Riley 8B MATCH REPORT Final Scores: Xavier def Haileybury Best Players: Blake Ross, Robert Ward, David Cowell and Liam Holding. On Saturday the 7th of May the 8B footy team played out at Kew to play against Xavier. It was an early start as we had to be at the ground at 7.30am but everyone was raring to go. The first quarter of the game was good we kicked the first 2 goals and looked to be away but our talk and communication dropped off as they kicked three quick goals leaving us down on the scoreboard at quarter time. The second and third quarter was a bit better as we talked more and used the ball a lot better, however, we did not man up very well and they kicked some easy goals. We kicked the first goal of the last quarter, however, Xavier quickly replied and our heads dropped down and we played a lot worse. We lost but we played a good game and are able to take some good lessons away. By Stewart Petley 9A MATCH REPORT HY: SKC: Best: Briggs, Morris, Logan, Taylor, M.King, Riorden, B.King. Goals: Taylor 3, Logan 2, B.King 2, Riorden 1, Briggs 1, Morris 1, M.King 1, Bell 1, Gorozidis 1. The boys had one of there biggest games for the year in round 2. Up against a very strong opposition in St Kevins, the Magenta and black were represented

proudly by the 9A group who fell behind early but showed some character and fought back in the second half. Led by Morris, Riorden and Taylor in the third quarter we were able to pile on 8 goals. The game proved to the boys that a lot of work is going to be needed to improve our performance next week against the same opposition with goal of winning more than one quarter. 9B MATCH REPORT Final Score: MGS V HY The boys travelled down to Melbourne Grammar for the second game of the season, we all warmed up and were told the positions for the day. We got out there and started the game. The scoring started from Tom Bain who kicked the first of many Haileyburys goals, we had dominated in the centre for the first half of the game and were at least 50 points up at half time and managed to keep them scoreless, the half time instructions were to keep up the tight defending and keep them from getting a goal. In the third quarter we had let him get one point and no goals. We finished the game off with a classy fourth quarter and a key coaching decision to swap the backline for the forward line, which gave our key defender Randor Falconer to bag 3 or 4 goals. The scoreline represented our dominance all game MGS VS HY, the boys kept them goalless and dominated through the centre. Everyone did their bit and contributed, Key players- Liam Redmomd, Randor Falconer, Connor Chow, James Tully, Cooper Nolan. From Finn Armstrong 9/10C MATCH REPORT Final Scores: Haileybury V Carey The 10Cs hosted Carey Grammar at Springers and were defeated to On the huge windswept oval we dominated the first quarter with the ball spending most of the time in our front half. However, it was only Noack who was able to capitalise on the scoreboard kicking our only goal after marking strongly. It was then Carey s turn with the wind advantage and they piled on four unanswered goals. Playing more accountable football in the third term, we were able to nullify their main ball getters restricting Carey to a solitary goal in the third term. A Big thanks to the year 9s who stepped up and all played their role for the team. Lachlan Venten, Dilen Samarakoon and Ben Taverniti were among the best players.

10A MATCH REPORT Best Players: Rogerson, Palmer, Coleman, McIntyre, Stocker. Score: SKC HC The 10As had a great win over Wesley in Round 1, but taking on St Kevin s is always a tough game and this week was even tougher with 9 players out for TAC, VIC Metro/Country trials and injuries. It was a glorious day in sunny Toorak and a perfect day for Football, but the more experienced St Kevins team jumped out of the blocks and dominated the game from the start. The Bloods backline was peppered in the first half but stood up well with McIntyre and Coleman leading the way. The boys were exhausted and goaless at half time but never dropped their heads in the 3 rd quarter. The goal for the last quarter was to beat St Kevins in the last 20 minutes and the boys deserve credit for kicking 3 goals to St Kevins 2 and showing some fight to finish off the game. Rogerson was sensational all day and was awarded the OHA Best Player Award for the day followed closely by Jack Palmer who belted into packs with little regard for his own body. We look forward to taking on St Kevins again this week on the Rendall Oval with a strengthened and more experienced team. St Kevins dominated for most of the game against an undermanned 10A team last week. We play them at Home again on Saturday with all our representative footballers back, a big chance to for the team to hit back. THIRD XVIII MATCH REPORT

Final Scores: Haileybury d St. Kevin's Green Goalkickers: Hetherington 4, Bingham 3, Foyster 2, Grove 2, Pereira 2, J. Smith, J. Cunningham, Poulos, Best: Seneviratne, Hetherington, Ventouras, Pereira, Grove, Foyster After dispatching the all Year 12 St. Kevin's team last week, it was the 3rds turn to play the all Year 11 St. Kevin's team. With no 1sts game this week and some 1sts players dropping back to the 2nds, Josh Hetherington and Brenton Grove both featured as guest players for the 3rds. Both had solid games and after kicking six goals between them both made a strong case to push back up to the 2nds next week. Kicking with a strong breeze in the first quarter, Haileybury conceded the first goal to St. Kevin's. This seemed to spur our boys into action as we then slammed on eight goals to go to the first break 50 points in front. From this point we gradually built on our lead in each quarter to eventually run out 93 point winners. Ranel Seneviratne played another strong game both in the ruck and in defence and was awarded the prize of an Old Haileybury beanie for best afield. Ben Foyster and Harry Bingham were both a constant threat up forward and finished with two and three goals respectively. Mathew Pereira and Michael Poulos both used their pace to launch countless attacks from the wings. Everyone else played their part at different stages and ultimately our even contribution proved far too much for St. Kevin's. SECOND XVIII MATCH REPORT Score: Haileybury 3.7 (25) lost to St Kevin s (103) Goal Kickers: Seccull, Algeri, Kirkwood Best players: Skinner, Coinu, Pedder, Williamson, Paul, Algeri After two wins to start the season the Magoos travelled to St Kevin s full of confidence. The boys knew that this game would show them just how good they were; St Kevin s are always a formidable opponent, especially on their home deck, but the boys were looking forward to the challenge. St Kevin s won the toss and kicked with the aid of a 2-3 goal wind in the first quarter. The Bloods battled bravely and matched them in general play, but skill errors at crucial times gifted St Kevin s easy goals. However, Sharpe intercepted a clearing St Kevin s kick at half forward and found Seccull, who scored the only Bloods goal of the quarter. Skinner and Pedder battled hard in the midfield, and Paul and Hurley were getting plenty of the footy across the middle. At quarter time Haileybury found themselves two goals down. In the second quarter St Kevin s started to control the ball. They got numbers around the contest and switched the ball to space very effectively. The Bloods could not stick their tackles and were simply not working hard enough, and our skills did not improve. After conceding the first four goals of the quarter, Algeri kicked a steadying goal from outside 40 metres to give the boys some hope. At half time the deficit was 32 points.

The second half did not go as the Bloods has hoped. St Kevin s used the ball really well. Kirkwood snuck a goal through with an inside-out torpedo in the third quarter, but that was one of few highlights. St Kevin s ran out easy winners. The Magoos received quite a reality check and learned that we still have some work to do to match it with the elite APS schools. A quirk in the fixture means that we play St Kevin s again next week, this time on the Rendall. The boys resolved to put in a hard week on the training track to make sure of an improved result next Saturday. The Midfield group listen to Jake Pedder in their huddle at 1/4 time and scratch their heads as to what to do V St Kevins FIRST XVIII MATCH REPORT The First XVIII had the Bye last week. This weekend they play St Kevins who are also undefeated at home here on the Rendall starting at 1pm OLD HAILEYBURY FOOTBALL CLUB Any queries can be directed to the Under 19 team manager, Geoff Mantell on or David Lappage. For the latest edition of the Bloods Bulletin - Official OHFC Web Site - Another 3 boys played for Old Haileybury on the weekend taking the season tally so far to 10 different boys taking advantage of getting experience against older footballers.

Xavier Subotsch played in the Under 19s and contributed well to a strong win. His long kicking was a feature including a very classy goal being kicked on the run from the half forward flank in the last quarter. Connor Riley and Corey Rich both played in the Firsts where they experienced an eleven goal first quarter from the opposition as they kicked with the wind. Connor played across the half back line and delivered the ball really well down field and made good options whilst Corey was a good target all day up forward but struggled in the wind to kick accurately kicking 0.6 for the day.
