Harlow Town Res. got things off on Friday evening as they entertained Sporting Bengal United. The result went the way of the Premier Division outfit as goals from Kaleem Luthra, Bobby Redwood, Jason Ngandu and a returning Steve Carvell saw Harlow Town Reserve eliminated. Tim Strike and Romain DoRogerio notched the Harlow replies. The other scheduled game on Friday evening between Aveley Res and West Essex was postponed due to the unfortunately death of a young Aveley player over the Christmas period. 2 Onto Saturday and high flying Hullbridge Sports were knocked out of the Errington Challenge Cup by a rampant Hoddesdon Town. Joss Lillis opened the Hoddesdon account in the 3 rd minute; Connor Bolton and Kane Lowe added to the tally before the hosts were able to pull one back via Nathan Scarborough in the 25 th minute. But Aiden Critchley then notched to see Hoddesdon leading 4-1 at the break and a further goal was added in the 64 th minute as Lillis closed the show on a resounding Hoddesdon victory. Meanwhile Barkingside Res. brushed Southend Manor aside in the Peter Butcher Memorial Trophy; the 5-1 win including a hat-trick from Carl Patten. Darren Seymour and Ishmael Raymond were the other Barkingside scorers, with Mark Frostick s goal against his former club proving to be a mere consolation for his new one. Tower Hamlets didn t go the same way though, they made sure they ended the challenge of the Reserve Division team they had to face and duly despatched Grays Athletic Res Yoan Edoukou, Suibo Balde, Montel Williams and Ezekiel Kamara the Tower Hamlets scorers; Manraj Phagura scored the Grays reply. Ilford last week lost 3-0 at home to Clapton in the league. The Foxes went and gained revenge on Clapton this weekend in the Peter Butcher Memorial Trophy winning the tie 2-1. Alexander Cathline handed Ilford the lead in the 17 th minute but Leon Lewis replied for the Tons just on the half hour. But the game was then won by Ilford fifteen minutes from time when Lamarr Douglas fired home from the spot. 4 ESL Launch Hospitality Award In conjunction with Buzz Catering All it is now becoming a very serious matter with hospitality either being poor, nonexistent or no visiting committee attending games and wasted hospitality. The minimum sanction for no hospitality is 50 for the first offence, doubled for subsequent offences; therefore it is much more economic for you to be providing hospitality at all home games. To try to combat this, rather than just sanction (which we will do if necessary) we are offering you a competition to receive a 35 credit / voucher with Buzz Supplies (kindly donated by Philip Fortune, Buzz Catering) per month for one team who are deemed to be actively trying to improve their hospitality - this way you can purchase any equipment / supplies required to assist you to continue to improve your hospitality whilst saving you valuable resources. Hospitality simplified - should be before, during and post match in a boardroom or an area clearly sectioned off and identifiable as for committee use only as well as for the players of both teams for half time (juice / water) and post match refreshments. Hospitality isn't just the provision of refreshments though - it is someone to meet and greet the match officials and visiting committee. We are striving to drive up standards and this is badly letting everyone down; remember this is semi professional football and as such you must adhere to the minimum standards expected at this level of the game. The competition is now on... and the winner will be announced via Centrespot at the end of each month. CentreSpot To Be Launched As An E-Newsletter The New Year will herald in the latest improvement to CentreSpot. Launched in 1984, the newsletter was originally a four-page issue covering news, fixtures, results and tables. It was posted out every Monday. Then in more recent times the newsletter became a PDF file which was then ed every Sunday to clubs. In the New Year CentreSpot will become an E Newsletter which will have links to all the articles on the website posted over the preceding week. So expect reports, tables, fixtures, results plus all the goal scoring, clean sheet and attendance statistics along with more features and articles. CentreSpot Essex Senior League. 5 From The Archives A Delve Into ESL History By Robert Errington LEYTON ORIENT - The missing link? Not for the first time we deviate from the Essex Senior League to, hopefully, correct some history in relation to Leyton Orient FC. In the Football Yearbook, under Previous names it is stated that, up to 1946, the club were called Clapton Orient. There is no dispute of that and, in fact, the Sunday Chronicle Annual makes that clear in their fixtures for 1946/47 season, but then it states that the club were called Leyton Orient until 1966 when they reverted to Orient until That is where I would like to fill in a short, missing period of the club s history and it is thanks to two very rare Match Programmes that I possess. The first is a single A5 sheet dated Saturday September 21 st 1946 with a heading ORIENT FOOTBALL CLUB (1906) LTD, Osborne Road, Leyton E10., for a match involving the Orient Reserves v Norwich City Reserves (2-2), priced at 1 Penny. Someone has written, in pen, that it is Clapton Orient Reserves. The late John Bays, Chairman of the Senior Competitions Committee of the Essex County F A was playing for Orient at Right Back. The Programme also states that the next match is v Crystal Palace on 28 TH in the old Third Division South and that is the significance of this story for we now move to a four-page A5 programme, priced two pence, for that First team game. It had the same heading but, in ink, this time, is written Leyton Orient The Club Notes for Orient v Crystal Palace read as follows:- Good afternoon friends, let it be said here and now that this afternoon will go down as an historical one in the annals of the Orient. After 40 years, the name of the club is changed to Leyton Orient FC Ltd and from now on it will be known as such. Gone is the prefix Clapton which has been associated with the club all those years and goes back to the days of Millfields Road, Homerton. The Notes continue to welcome the Mayor, FA members and many others to the game all with messages of goodwill. 6 There will be many who feel regret at the dropping of the name Clapton. To whom I would say it is a perfectly proper and natural thing for any football club to desire to identify itself with the borough or township for which the ground is situated. We look forward to a successful and prosperous Leyton Orient FC. Clapton Orient FC is dead, Long Live Leyton Orient. The club hoped to make Osborne Road their permanent home and trust that, in time, the Borough will be proud of their team. A new flag was hoisted in the club colours of blue and White with a V chevron. Such was the euphoria of the day that the club, nearly forgetting the opposition added a tiny piece at the bottom in welcoming Crystal Palace! In a 22-club table, QPR were leading then Cardiff City won the Division, Crystal Palace were 11 th and Leyton Orient were 19 th at the time ending exactly that. The Sunday Chronicle yearbook for 1948/49 then gives the ground as Brisbane Road, the change coming in until the present day. ESL Did You Know That the first indication we find of a league with the name Essex in it was the South Essex League that was formed in There were seven clubs in that first season: Custom House, Forest Swifts, Leytonstone, Manor Park, St Lukes and South West Ham. Winners were Leyton but like all familiar ESL names, we cannot guarantee that there is a connection with the present day clubs. In the second season, Brentwood, Woodford and Romford came on the scene, again, no connection to present day clubs. A very famous name formed in 1895 and joined the league, but actually withdrew, probably before the season started, as they joined the London League at their Hermit Road ground. That club was Thames Ironworks, now known as West Ham United. In the third season, 1898/99, Barking Woodville (definitely connected to Barking) and Ilford joined. There was also a second division of mainly Reserve sides but one club listed, East Ham United, were not a forerunner of the club that later played in the ESL. CentreSpot Essex Senior League.
