The visitors went into this one on the back on an eleven-game unbeaten run and they took the lead on only 8 minutes via Coby Miles. 2 derby is always going to be a tight affair but the hosts had the better of the chances and took the lead in the 68 th minute through Callum Ibe. It proved to be the winning goal that keeps Stansted top, while Takeley remain 3 rd. Barkingside recvied a welcome Christmas present at Mile End Stadium: a 1-0 win against Sporting Bengal United. Darnell Goather-Braithwaite scored the goal; Ryan Karrer kept a clean sheet and it s Side s first league win of the season, coming only a few days after a 1-0 win over Leyton Athletic in the Errington Challenge Cup. They remain bottom but will be hoping their sudden winning habit carries over into the New Year. Walthamstow also won 1-0, with Dwade James providing the goal that edged out West Essex. Harry Girling kept West Essex out, earning him a clean sheet; Aaron Bull did the same for Hoddesdon Town who went on to beat Sawbridgeworth Town 2-0. Aiden Critchley finally opened the account in the 83 rd minute and six minutes later Hoddesdon sealed the deal with an Imani Matthews goal. One other keeper played the Christmas stooge on Saturday as Joe Phillips and his defence kept Ilford at bay. Meanwhile at the other end Clapton went on to breach Ilford s defences three times; Timi Abiola, Rueben Campbell and Ali Al-Nashi the Tons men that inflicted the damage. St Margaretsbury move up to 9 th after a 3-1 win over Woodford Town. Thomas Cowell opened the account for the hosts in the 38 th minute but two minutes later the Woods drew level via Temi Babalola. Connor Scully handed St Margaretsbury the lead once again in the 55 th minute and the posts were secured when Lennox Shaquille added a third later on. The weather wrecked some damage too as Redbridge v Enfield, Hullbridge Sports v Southend Manor and Stanway Rovers v Saffron Walden Town were postponed due to the elements making pitches unplayable. Tower Hamlets meanwhile had their Friday night engagement with Leyton Athletic called off due to Mile End Stadium staff having a Christmas party! 5 ESL Launch Hospitality Award In conjunction with Buzz Catering All it is now becoming a very serious matter with hospitality either being poor, nonexistent or no visiting committee attending games and wasted hospitality. The minimum sanction for no hospitality is 50 for the first offence, doubled for subsequent offences; therefore it is much more economic for you to be providing hospitality at all home games. To try to combat this, rather than just sanction (which we will do if necessary) we are offering you a competition to receive a 35 credit / voucher with Buzz Supplies (kindly donated by Philip Fortune, Buzz Catering) per month for one team who are deemed to be actively trying to improve their hospitality - this way you can purchase any equipment / supplies required to assist you to continue to improve your hospitality whilst saving you valuable resources. Hospitality simplified - should be before, during and post match in a boardroom or an area clearly sectioned off and identifiable as for committee use only as well as for the players of both teams for half time (juice / water) and post match refreshments. Hospitality isn't just the provision of refreshments though - it is someone to meet and greet the match officials and visiting committee. We are striving to drive up standards and this is badly letting everyone down; remember this is semi professional football and as such you must adhere to the minimum standards expected at this level of the game. The competition is now on... and the winner will be announced via Centrespot at the end of each month. CentreSpot To Be Launched As An E-Newsletter The New Year will herald in the latest improvement to CentreSpot. Launched in 1984, the newsletter was originally a four-page issue covering news, fixtures, results and tables. It was posted out every Monday. Then in more recent times the newsletter became a PDF file which was then ed every Sunday to clubs. In the New Year CentreSpot will become an E Newsletter which will have links to all the articles on the website posted over the preceding week. 6 From The Archives A Delve Into ESL History By Robert Errington BEFORE THE SECOND WORLD WAR For a change this week we go way back from the beginning of the Essex Senior League but mentioning some of our teams, their predecessors and a few clubs that, for one reason or another are just a memory and no longer exist. It is the year 1938 and in June, Gillingham had lost their place in the Football League and were elected to the Southern League (to be won by Colchester United); Chelmsford City in their first year as a professional club were also elected with Worcester City and Cardiff City A.Arsenal s third team also entered playing games at the Southbury Road ground of Enfield FC. The season kicked off on September 3 rd with the Extra Preliminary Round of the FA Amateur Cup(won by Bishop Auckland) and Briggs Motor Bodies (became Ford United and now Redbridge) were defeated 1-0 by Barking; Tufnell Park (now Haringey Borough) were 7-0 victors over Old Lyonians. Bishop s Stortford thrashed British Legion (Watford) 9-0; Ware beat Stevenage Town 3-1. Maldon&Heybridge beat Port of London Authority 3-1; Hoddesdon Town were 3-0 victors at Saffron Walden Town; Headington United (now Oxford United) won 5-2 at Osberton Radiators and Crittall Athletic (now Braintree) beat Brantham Athletic 4-0. Plus Golders Green (now Hendon FC) beat Pinner 4-1. More of the long defunct clubs were: Northmet, Bedford Sports, Nunhead, Wandsworth United, P O Engineers, R A M C, Banstead Hospital, Leyland Motors (South), Grenville (Ramsgate), Royal Marines Deal, Lloyds Sittingbourne, London Caledonians, Pressed Steal Cowley, Morris Motors Cowley,Wood Green Town and Old Johnians In the Isthmian League Leytonstone were the eventual Champions, and they defeated Clapton with a 2-1 win. Ilford beat The Casuals 2-0. The Athenian League was won by Walthamstow Avenue but other games saw Enfield beaten 1-0 by Sutton United, Romford winning 2-1 at Redhill and Leyton beaten 4-0 at home by Wealdstone. 7 In the London League Dagenham Town were the winners; Eton Manor who went into the season as defending Champions were beaten 2-1 by Leavesdon. The Spartan League had three teams no longer in Callendar Athletic, Waterlows (Dunstable) and Lyons Club. In the same month was the Preliminary Round of the FA Cup (Portsmouth won it) and in addition to clubs already mentioned, there was U.G.B. Charlton, Brightlingsea United 4-0 winners over Leyton; Hoddesdon Town beat Berkhamsted Town 3-1; Romford beat Stork (Purfleet) 12-0! Eton Manor beat mighty Clapton 5-0. Other names that appeared include: Civil Service, Apsley, Hoxton Manor, Luton Amateurs, Darenth Park, Hoffman Athletic, Canterbury Waverley, London Paper Mills, Bostall Heath, Vernon Athletic and Corporation Tramways both of Brighton, Eastbourne Comrades, Orwell Works of Ipswich, Norwich St Barnabas, R.A. F. Martlesham and Abbey United (now Cambridge United) who beat Histon Institute (now Histon) 2-1. In the F A Cup, second qualifying round, Hoddesdon Town went out to Apsley, losing the tie 2-1. In the second qualifying round of the Amateur Cup, Brightlingsea United succumbed to a 10-0 defeat at Clacton Town. In the Surrey Senior Cup, a team called Aquarius, affiliated to the Metropolitan Water Board and folding in 1970 once played some home matches at Wembley Stadium. In the 1938/39 season they drew 2-2 with West Norwood. The Essex Senior Cup first Qualifying Round had three ties: C.W.S. Silvertown 5 Esso (Echo?) Sports 3; Woodford Town 2 Briggs Motor Bodies 5; Saffron Walden Town 12 Severalls Athletic 3, which must be one of the Bloods highest scores! The FA Cup First Round saw Ipswich Town, previous members of the Southern Amateur League and just elected to the Football League, beat Street 7-0. Southend United beat Corinthians 3-0 and Walthamstow Avenue beat Tunbridge Wells Rangers 4=1. Finally, in the Football League in November 1938, Derby County led Everton (Winners) and Charlton Athletic with Grimsby Town in 11 th, whilst at the bottom were Brentford and Manchester United! Spurs, Man City, West Ham, Southampton were all in the Second Division and New Brighton were in the Third Division North. 8 CHRISTMAS DAY FIXTURES As historians recall, a long-standing football tradition came to an end on Christmas Day 1957 with 18 league games played for the final time. But in fact the actual last league game played on Christmas Day was staged eight years later. After Blackpool beat Blackburn Rovers 4-2 at Bloomfield Road on Dec , only in Scotland did the Yuletide fixture list remain intact and that was right up to 1976 when two games were played. In Division Two Alloa v Cowdenbeath ended in a 2-2 draw; and on a hard frosty pitch at Kilbowie Park, second v top in Division One saw Clydebank draw 2-2 with Alex Ferguson s St. Mirren. World Cup Winner Played At Oakside Recently. By David Ballheimer Just a note on the Chertsey team which defeated Redbridge in the FA Vase recently. I have not seen the full line-up, but the hat-trick scorer, SilkySam07, sorry Sam Murphy, played in the World Cup for England earlier this year. Admittedly it was neither the FIFA nor CONIFA versions, but the Socca one, the six-a-side event played in Lisbon in September. I took special interest in the event as seven of the squad had Hendon links. Another member of the England Socca squad, who played in Chertsey s last CCL match was Lubo Guentchev, and his dad played in the 1994 FIFA World Cup semi-final. The Chertsey manager, Dave Anderson, star of the Non League Football Show with Caroline Barker, was the second man to take charge of AFC Wimbledon, doing so in Dave left Hendon to go from the North London Dons to the AFC Dons.
