1 CentreSpot The official news bulletin of the Essex Senior Football League Season 2018/19 Issue 5 Sunday 2 nd September Mixed FA Vase Bag for ESL Teams Takeley overcame Walthamstow in a real ding-dong battle that needed extra time before a winner could be found. Charlie Cole had fired Takeley into an 11 th minute lead and they held onto it right until the 84 th minute when James Peagram levelled. Stuart Zanone then provided Takeley with the lead in the first period of extra time with Andre Humphrys then making sure there was no way back for Walthamstow by making it 3-1 in the final minute of extra time. Clapton and Woodford Town CentreSpot Essex Senior League. Edited by Scott Lanza Page 1

2 also went all the way to extra time, but there game ended 1-1 at the end and so they have to go again in midweek. Clapton scored through Steve Sardinia, with Temi Babalola notching for Woodford Town. Stanway Rovers and White Ensign will also have to go again after their game was abandoned due to a player receiving a bad injury. Tower Hamlets found themselves two-goals down at Langford as Luke Smith and Jack Worbey put the hosts in a commanding lead. Lindisipho Mtyanda and Michael Adeste then scored for Hamlets which levelled the game, but having clawed their way back into the game, the hosts then scored again through James Todd to win the game 3-2. Leyton Athletic were brushed aside by Stotfold who won the game 4-0. Ilford also crash out, despite taking the lead against Haverhill Rovers. The Foxes had been under the cosh for most of the first half but took the lead three minutes into the second half when Yemi Adelani pounced on a defensive error. Mark Lovell then levelled for the hosts in the 54 th minute before Sam Holmes rifled home the winner in the 82 nd minute to see Haverhill Rovers through. Stansted also fell at the first hurdle as Jordan Palmer s goal was cancelled out by Sam Newson s brace, with George Clarke the other Brantham Athletic scorer in the 3-1 win. First half goals from Mohamed Kargbo and Nathan Dewberry meant Southend Manor went in at the break with one foot very much in the next round. There was to be no way back for Ipswich Wanderers with Charlie Little going on to add Manor s third goal of the afternoon five minutes from time. 3 Reporting Of Results Even though this is set out in the handbook and has been mentioned a t league meetings, some member clubs are still not reporting results correctly. Therefore it will now be listed again and as from next weekend fines will be issued for non compliance. 1) It is the duty of all home clubs to text the result and goalscorers from BOTH teams along with the attendance for Essex Senior League, Errington Challenge Cup, Gordon Brasted Memorial Trophy and Peter Butcher Memorial Trophy games. Any clean sheets will also require the goalkeeper s details being text to the Publicity Officer 2) It is the duty of all ESL clubs to text results, goalscorers from BOTH teams and attendance for outside competitions, ie FA Cup, FA Vase and County Cup games, whether the Home side or Away side 3) This information has to be text over to the Publicity Officer 30 minutes after the game has completed. The number is Hospitality It is good practice to view hospitality as a way of showcasing how friendly your club is whether this be match officials, opponents, boardroom guests, committee member and League Officials. Referees & Boardroom Guests Upon arrival offer of hot/cold beverages. At half time offer light refreshments & hot/cold beverages. At full time offer light refreshments & hot/cold beverages. Opposition At half time cold drinks in dressing room. At full time light refreshments in club house (ideally). Light Refreshments Guide The Standardised rules clearly state a minimum of tea/coffee and biscuits to be provided upon arrival and at half time within a segregated area of a clubhouse ideally in a boardroom but not CentreSpot Essex Senior League. 4 necessarily so if one is not available, with refreshment and sandwiches to be provided at full time to all those with boardroom passes. And finally, there must be provision for the sale of refreshments including hot drinks to paying spectators. There are many of us, who, over the past fifteen years have passed through Cricklefield to watch matches with Ilford and Barkingside and have met Barbara, the most effective Raffle Ticket seller in the League. It would be a useless exercise trying to bypass her and I gave up years ago. Sadly, Barbara has been hospitalised recently after a number of falls and may not be able to return so, I am sure we all send our best wishes to her. Folk like Barbara are so precious to clubs as Roger, Marion and Jimmy know all too well and we thank them all for that. 5 From The Archives A Delve Into ESL History By Robert Errington The QPR Connection In welcoming the new clubs to the Essex Senior League this season, our second story comes about by a choice example of longevity that I can recall. Peter Coath of Saffron Walden Town brought to my attention that on Saturday 18 th August in a match with Sporting Bengal United, their Manager, Stuart Wardley played his first game in the League since 1998/99, a gap of 19 years that would appear to be an all time record though, at the age of 42, has a little to go before eclipsing the individual record of Reg Curtis (aged 51) at Eton Manor FC - but is pretty good going all the same! Season 1997/98 was not a happy one for Saffron Walden Town who finished under everyone else but this brought a complete turnaround in fortune to such an extent that, in the very next season, 1998/99, they were third but more importantly it brought success in the form of the Harry Fisher Trophy and a 2-1 win over League Champions, Bowers United thanks to goals from Stuart Wardley in the 35 th minute and Marc Das 84 mins. He was also the clubs leading scorer. Season 1999/00 was even better as Saffron Walden Town won the League and League Cup but other eyes had spotted the young talent of our story, Stuart Wardley. Those eyes were of Gerry Francis, the boss of Queens Park Rangers who reputedly plucked Stuart from non league football for 15,000. Stuart was also an office removal man and soon got to grips with the Football League scoring five goals in his first 12 starts. Stuart had been playing for Bishop s Stortford in the Isthmian League when Saffron Walden s chairman, Steve Cox, persuaded him to return to his club at what was to turn out to be, a massive career change at a much lower level but where he had first started playing football. Wardley made his QPR debut in a 3-1 win over Huddersfield on August 7 TH 1999 as a defender but was the moved into midfield, netting twice against Port Vale, once in a 4-1 away win at Ipswich, hit the winner against West Bromwich Albion and on target again in a 2-0 win against Blackburn Rovers. Stuart made 72 appearances for QPR and scored 14 times before moving to Rushden & Diamonds in 2001 where he made 54 appearances with 10 goals. He also played for Torquay United, Leyton CentreSpot Essex Senior League. Edited by Scott Lanza Page 5

6 Orient and Cambridge United and, of course is now back at his hometown and, on August 18 th playing again! An interesting aside to this story is regarding another ESL player who was at QPR at the same time as Stuart and is back again with us and that is former East Ham United s Ross Weare, now at Woodford Town and who moved with Gerry Francis to Bristol Rovers in Essex Senor League Official Website CentreSpot Essex Senior League.
