1 CentreSpot The official news bulletin of the Essex Senior Football League Season 2016/17 Issue #13 Monday 24 th October 2016 The Buildbase FA Vase took centre stage at the weekend as seven member clubs fought to progress to the 2 nd Round. To coin an overused phase, it was a bad day at the office as London Bari s record breaking run came to an end at Broadfields United (2-1), Barking suffered a rare defeat (2-0) at Gorleston, Ilford went down by the odd goal in five at St Margaretsbury, Sporting Bengal United lost (0-3) to visitors Southall and Waltham Forest were put to the sword by Rothwell Corinthians at Wadham Lodge (1-2). Wadham Lodge was a happier place on Sunday as Wadham Lodge continued their record breaking run in a feisty victory (2-1) over the Nemesis of many an Essex Senior League side in recent seasons, Hertford Town. From The FA web site : Wadham Lodge came from behind to win a fiery tie at home to Hertford Town, despite going down to nine men in the closing stages of the contest. Mark Summers put the visitors ahead after 25 minutes, racing clear and lobbing the keeper with a classy finish, but just seconds later Wadham Lodge were level. And despite putting their hosts under the cosh all the way through the remainder of the first half, hertford Town found themselves trailing when they let a high ball bounce and Alex Akanbi made them pay with a fine finish. There was late drama as both Glody Nsamu and Christopher John saw red when tempers flared late on in the game, but the hosts clung on for a memorable win. Sawbridgeworth took the lead after nine minutes, as Aaron Thomas slotted the ball home, despite Luca Collins blocking the original strike. The hosts responded to the goal, when Craig Avery struck from outside the box, which forced visiting goalkeeper Matt Bonnini into a fine save. However, the Essex visitors extended their lead, as Toby Cleaver chipped an effort over Collins on 23 minutes. The Yellows survived a scare, midway through the half, after Andi Pearce s touch met Toby Cleaver who unleashed the ball against the crossbar, which was blocked. Collins did well to catch a header from Aaron Thomas. Again, the home side responded with Joe Copping spectacular effort but it ended up wide of the goal, but it was three-nil to the Robins on forty minutes, through Matt Hayter s strike. However, a glimmer of hope sparked in the 42nd minute, as Oscar Gammon produced a well-timed finish for Sudbury. The visitors restored their three-goal advantage just moments after, when Toby Cleaver struck home at close range, on the stroke of half-time. Two quick fire efforts from the restart put Sudbury in further disappointment, as Aaron Thomas collected his second goal of the afternoon, before James Richardson sunk the Yellows further with the visitor s sixth goal of the afternoon. Kade Ivatt made a good run through midfield, and pushed forward with support from AFC, but the youngster was dispossessed by Tyler Sanga Ismael. Toby Cleaver could have had a hat-trick if it wasn t for AFC s goalkeeper Luca Collins, with the young goalkeeper doing well to stop the shot. Town goalkeeper Matt Bonnini was kept on his toes throughout the half, as he denied good chances from Callum Vincent, Milo Grimes and Joe Copping. Substitutes Tim Gore and Michael Carrigan looked to make an impact after replacing Ivatt and Prentice, although they were unlucky with their efforts. Blues, handed a bye to the first round, made the long trip to Norfolk after the Emerald Park pitch was declared playable, having been very soggy in midweek. And they travelled on the back of a 2-1 midweek win over Waltham Forest, with a seven-point lead at the top of the Essex Senior League table. The visitors had a chance to open the scoring during a fairly even opening spell, but Joe Pearman shot straight at keeper Taurean Molloy, then a cross flew over James Peagram s head. Gorleston had a great chance to get their noses in front when a deep corner was crossed back into the box and a shot was saved by Michael Green. But Peagram fired a free-kick just past the post for Barking as they began to look the stronger of the two sides and Pearman had a shot saved, after Gorleston had seen a header go wide of the target. More Blues pressure ended with Peagram having a header saved low down by Molloy, before Peagram, Pearman and Omari Delgado all went close during a goalmouth scramble. But the home side then took the lead against the run of play on the stroke of half time as a shot was spilled by Green and Joel Watts pounced on the loose ball to turn it into the net. Gorleston began the second half well, with a decent effort from just outside the box flashing just wide, while Peagram went close with a lob at the other end and Delgado saw a low shot from the edge of the box go just past the near post. John Bricknell then got in behind the home defence, but was denied by a fine save by Molloy at his near post, and Gorleston promptly went and doubled their advantage to leave Barking with a mountain to climb. The hosts went close to a third, firing over from the edge of the box, before Blues made a double change and brought on Liam Burgess and Ashley Wackers-Kyriacou for Paul Oshin and Delgado. But the visitors could not find any reply and made the long journey back to Essex with a rare taste of defeat, ahead of a return to league action at Redbridge on Tuesday.
